Is Paterno Crazy ?

As you can tell from my signature, I live in Atlanta. I am originally from Erie, Pa and have been a lifelong Steelers, Pirates, Pens, and Penn State fan. I even pull for Pitt if they aren't playing PSU. I was 7 in 79 when Guman was stopped at the Goal Line and I remember wondering how a 7 year old was going to resuscitate 2 Uncles, 2 Aunts, my Dad and a Grandfather. Anyhow, I have always prided myself on "choosing" to align myself with Penn State and Joe Paterno. I am sitting here at work wearing my Joe Knows Football t-shirt in anticipation of tomorrow night. So consequently, I have a hard time laughing at jokes people make about Paterno. I also have a hard time listening to people talk about how he is senile or crazy. Down here on ESPN Radio, the local drive time guys, Buck and Kincade, tend to get on Paterno. Buck is the QB who threw the pass in 1980 to Lindsey Scott that won Georgia the National Championship. He doesn't crack on Paterno. Its Kincade. Kincade is your typical overly provincial holier than thou jack off from Philadelphia. He went to Temple. He loves to take shots at Paterno. So every week they do a segment with Jim Donnan. A couple weeks ago, after the "road rage" incident, Kincade tried to goad Donnan into commenting on Paterno. Donnan wouldn't do it. Donnan instead a few complimentary things to say about Paterno and wouldn't bite as Kincade would have liked. I thought that was interesting given the comments Paterno had for the Oklahoma program in the 70's and Donnan's affiliation with Switzer and the Sooners. I thought Donnan would jump at the chance to make a comment. He didn't. Then a couple weeks ago, I read a MB post where a guy said that his father played football for Marland back in the mid 60's. The son was attending PSU currently or recently and he and his Dad were walking around campus. They ran into Paterno and his Dad struck up a conversation with Paterno about the Maryland PSU game that the Father played in. Long story short, it was one of Paterno's first games as HC and the Father told the son that he couldn't believe the clarity with which Paterno recalled the game and the players on both sides of the ball who played. Then, yesterday, Donnan is on again with Buck and Kincade and Kincade is talking about he would never want an 81 year old CEO of his company and how Penn State fans rival Alabama fans in their arrogance of the program except that Penn State fans don't have the NC's to show for it like Bama does. So he says to Donnan........Coach....seriously.....when is Paterno going to hang it up ? If he had the record, don't you think he would have hung it up already. The tone of the question and how loud Kincade was when he was asking it completely signalled how much he disliked Penn State and Paterno and that he was trying to lead Donnan down a path. So Donnan starts laughing and says......."I don't know if Paterno cares about the record or not....... I do know this.......not many people love football more than Joe Paterno. Its what he does and its who he is. When I was on the Nike Coaches Tour with him a few years ago.......all he wanted to do was talk Football. All the other Coaches were trying to make t-times and Paterno would come up and say "Hey Coach, can we talk about what you are doing with your spread option package"." Donnan went on to say.....I love football.....but not that much. I think Paterno will be Coaching for a few more years yet. It seemed that despite Kincades desire to get somebody like Donnan to throw Paterno under the bus, Donnan wouldn't do it. So I wondered if Was that because its taboo to do so or because there is nothing Donnan could say to give Kincade what he seemed to want. An indictment of Paternos character or current state of mind. So..........the question is.......is Paterno all there ? Do any of you have any stories that would support or refute the "mental well being" of our beloved Coach Paterno ? Sidenote.......its funny........if you are 45 and run down the sideline and stuff a picture of a blown call into a referee's shirt pocket a la Bill Cowher, you are passionate.........if you run down the sideline and grab the referee by the arm and you are 79 (at the time) you have Alzheimer's.

Excellent
Excellent post.  I love it, especially the Bill Cowher reference at the end.

Paterno loves what he does and does a pretty damn good job of it.  After this season, Joe could have 30+ wins over the last 3 years.  Not many coaches outside of Southern Cal or Columbus can say that.  That is pretty good, whether you are 30, 50, 70 or 81.

I have always said, as long as Paterno is willing, he should be the coach of Penn State.  He has earned that right and I don't see the program on a decline.  yeah, it is not a superpower like the 80's and 90's, but not many programs in history can duplicate those years.

Joe Pa
When I was home on leave in late June, I made a trip to happy valley and a friend of mine introduced me to the legend himself. We ate lunch and he talked to me about the team and this season. He also talked to me about his views of the war which I will not get into on here. I was incredibly inpressed by just how sharp his mind is and his attenttion to detail of past events. He talked to me about how serving the country was a great thing to do and when I am home next to come back and say hello and let him know how the deployment went. I greatly look forward to having the chance to converse with him again. He is definitely not crazy!

Thanks
Joe's not the only one who supports you. Thanks for serving.

To answer your question...
Yes. He is a little crazy. But we still love, respect, and admire him and everything he has done for Penn State.
Get up State.

Please...
don't ruin my image of Paterno with the knowledge that he supports the war...

I respect devildogpsufan for his service to our country.. but holy crap if I find out that Paterno can't see reality for what it is and for some reason thinks that the Iraq invasion was a good thing...

Sorry, not wanting to make this a political thing but Paterno is a hero of mine and I could hardly bare it if he were that blind.  He's supposed to be wise, and knowledgable of the classics.. lord knows he should be able to figure his way through this catastrophe.

Yeah........
Everybody has their own ideas about war, abortion, racism, religion, etc etc.  Noone is a idelogical clone of anyone else.  So.......having said that.......with the post I was hoping to a) say some things I wanted to get off my chest and b)  hopefully open up some dialogue about Paterno and hear of your stories that might give some real world insight into the virtues and flaws of the Living Legend himself.

Just
trying to keep this place clear of politics.. probably had the reverse effect.. sorry.

I'll just add that one image of Paterno that has really stood out to me is after the Adam Taliaferro incident.. Lynn Swann interviewed him a week or two after it happened on the field during one of the games and Joe broke down and could barely speak of the kid.

It was one of the most vivid displays of caring and humanity coming from the old coach.. I choked up too.

I Forgot About This........
I don't know if this is typical or not, but I played against Brian Milne in High School.  Brian played Fullback and I believed threw discus put for Penn State.  Brian rushed for 2000+ yards maybe more in high school his Sr. season and threw the discus a country mile.  Much like Greg Oden, Brian looked like he was 34 years old his Sr. in High School.  Anyways, he developed Hodgkins Disease at some point and was supposedly reassured at every step of the way that he had a scholarship waiting for him at PSU no matter what.  That was back in the early 90s before the Internet became a bit of a "Good Samaritan" policy enforcer, so I don't know what would have happened to people in similar situations back then.  I would like to think anyone would honor the scholly, but I would also like to think maybe Joe is just a bit more thoughtful and caring than the average Coach.

Crazy?
"Tito Puente is going to be dead, and you'll be saying, I've been listening to him for years, and I think he's a genius"

                        John Winger - in "Stripes"

Someday Joe Paterno is going to retire, or pass on, and I guarantee you that everybody in the world will have been his biggest fan for the last forty years.

Everybody who hates Joe Paterno is either ignorant, has an ax to grind or is just flat out jealous.  People who make senile jokes about Coach Paterno either fall into one of the above three categories, or they are just looking for a cheap laugh to fill time on their worthless television program.  Coach Paterno is one of the most respect coaches in the history of football (I left out "college" intentionally), regardless of how many people try to cut him down for the sake or ratings or a laugh.

The truth of the matter is that Joe Paterno is one of the last remaining coaches that are not beholden to national or regional media outlets.  If he doesn't like the question, he doesn't answer it.  If he thinks it's a stupid question, he says so.  If he doesn't want you to talk to Anthony Morelli this week, well, you don't get to talk to Anthony Morelli this week.

Does that make reporters' jobs more difficult?  Yes.

Does he care? No.

Why?  Because he does not work for the media, his job is to coach football.

Listen to Nittany Lion hotline on Tuesdays.  He answers questions for fans, giving them thoughtful, honest answers.  Two weeks ago I listened to Coach Paterno explain to a fan why the punt coverage has been bad, I listened and learned something.  Ten minutes later a guy called from Philadelphia and Coach Paterno told a funny story about a Temple game form the early 70's, his recollection about the game was a clear as mine as to what I had for lunch today.  The only questions he got at the weekly press conference were about Austin Scott, after he very clearly said he was not going to answer any questions about him.

So some idiot reporter asks a question that he has already been told won't be answered, and Joe Paterno is crazy?  That's asinine.

Reporters today feel it is their right to know what is happening about the Austin Scott case or that it is some sort of Watergate conspiracy when Morelli is not available for questions after the Michigan game.  It's not.  If their journalistic integrity is such that they won't talk with them after wins and the players are available, then so be it, but it isn't.

Joe Paterno's obligation is to Penn State University, its football team, and to a much lesser extent its fans.  His single minded commitment to this over the past fifty years may be crazy, but he certainly is not.

Depends who defines crazy
There are a lot of people in this day and age that think Joe is crazy

He makes his players do well academically.

He feels his players should be responsible for each other.

He makes his players atone for mis-steps by cleaning the student section.

He gives tons of his money away to a school library.

He has never violated NCAA rules.

Maybe the country needs more "crazies."

Of course not.
No one has done more for amateur athletics than Joe Paterno.  No one.  Without him, there is no PSU in the Big Ten, no Bryce Jordan Center, and no 110,000 in Beaver Stadium.  Crazy?  Please.

My Bad........
Maybe you are just responding to the overall question and not to me personally.  I have no reason to think he is losing it.  Wondered if anyone had any stories to share pro or con to given the debate about his frame of mind and level of competency from some people both in and out of the fanbase.

Sharp as a tack
I was one of the students who camped out in Paternoville since Monday at 8pm and got a chance to meet the god that is Joe Paterno.  When i was in the military one of my jobs was to guard dignitaries and movie stars. Never have i been so nervous and shaking as i was when i got a chance to meet the legend that is Joe Paterno. From the time him and Sue got out of their cars till the time he left i gained a new respect for this man.  He was awesome. Everyone wants to know how sharp Joepa is?  meet him sometime, he's very sharp...  Watch his press conferences sometime and analyze how he plays the media and then step back and think of some other people are his age and what their doing.  This man is a hero, a legend, and is Penn State football.  Without him there would be no Penn State, It would still be a small agricultural school and without him there would be no Penn State football and you doubters wouldn't have a reason to post stupid stuff about him here online.  If you hate Joepa that much, go root for Steve Spurrier or some other coach who couldn't lead his way out of a paper bag....
