I was just listening to Beano Cook on his weekly ESPN Podcast with Ivan Maisel.  Maisel asked him Beano what he thought of PSU and what does the OSU loss mean........Beano said, I have no idea what it means.  He then went on to say:

If you would have told me in 1993 that by 2007 Penn State wouldn't have won the Big 10 4 or 5 times, I would have told you you are crazy.

So as Mike's WebPage Headline implies, a season or seasons of mediocrity can be explained away, as many of us have, but when you look at being in the Big 10 for 15 years or whatever it has been and you only have 2 Conference Titles to show for it......how do you explain that and what does it say, if anything, about the program.

I really look at it
in terms of pre-Jay and post-Jay.  As in JayPa.  We were where we should have been in the 90's.. competing year in and year out.. successful against all the programs.. then 2000 hit, as well as JayPa.. and we lost our way:

1993 10-2-0 6-2-0 3rd W Citrus 7 8
1994 12-0-0 8-0-0 1st W Rose 2 2
1995 9-3-0 5-3-0 T-3rd W Outback 12 13
1996 11-2 6-2 T-3rd W Fiesta 7 7
1997 9-3 6-2 T-2nd L Citrus 17 16
1998 9-3 5-3 5th W Outback 15 17
1999 10-3 5-3 T-4th W Alamo 11 11

2000 5-7 4-4 T-6th
2001 5-6 4-4 T-4th
2002 9-4 5-3 4th L Capital One 15 16
2003 3-9 1-7 T-9th
2004 4-7 2-6 9th
2005 11-1 7-1 T-1st W Orange † 3 3
2006 9-4 5-3 T-4th W Outback 25 24

Wow...........If Those Numbers Are Accurate......
Penn State lost as many Big 10 games, 15, in the first 7 years in the league as they did in the first 3.5 years under Jay Pa.  Then, in that same timespan lost more games overall, 17, in the first 3 years under Jay Pa than in the 7 seasons before he took over 16.

Also.......the only two good years between 2000 and 2005 (6 seasons) featured undeniable talents in Larry Johnson and Michael Robinson.  Otherwise, meh.  Wow.

Damn JayPa
He frustrates me as much as the Bucco management...

I'm hoping 2008 is the final year of this coaching staff.  Keep Bradley, Johnson, McQuery around and dump everyone else.

Coaches
Can we keep Ron Vanderlinden and Brian Norwood? They're kind of good.

Hmm
Yea I guess, Vanderlinden stunk at Maryland, but maybe he can bring in some recruits down there.  I love Jordon Norwood so Brian can stay too.

Maryland
LJ owns Maryland. But you can't deny the job Vanderlinden has done in developing Poz, Connor, and Lee and recruiting Colasanti, Stuper, and Yancich. He has to be the best linebacker coach in America right now.

Recruits
Mike,
I know you're working on your next recruiting post, but I gots a question for ya...

Is there a coach or recruiter that concentrates on Eastern PA / New Jersey.  I think we need to do better out that way.  I know Bradley focuses on Western PA.  Plus who gets all the South Carolina folks such as Courtney Brown, Rodney Kinlaw come to mind.

Recruiting
I believe Dick Anderson is responsible for Eastern PA and New Jersey. I agree we don't dominate there like we used to.

Larry Johnson has Virginia and Maryland. I'm not sure if he does the Carolinas too or if that falls on someone else.

Jay gets Ohio and Michigan. Norwood takes Texas and the south west and I think CA. Bradley gets western PA and NY I believe.

South and West
Thanks.
I didn't even think we recruited the South and West.  Poor Norwood.  I can't think of any recruits from those parts.  Lydell Sargent doesn't count since he's from PA.

Norwood
He has a lot of contacts in the south and West. I think he grew up in California and went to school in Hawaii. Then I think he coached at Texas Tech. So he has a lot of contacts with high school coaches in those areas. They have just started recruiting on those areas in recent years. Mike Mauti is from Lousiana and was recruited by Norwood. We may get a few more kids from Texas before this class is done. He's doing a good job considering how difficult it is to recruit in the south when you have compete against Texas and LSU and the rest of the SEC.

Wow um no
No no no no no.

No.

Just no.

Let's just forget the fact that the 2000 team had one of the worst defenses statistically of all PSU teams, or that 1999 was Jerry Sandusky's last year...

We still had a very talented Rashard Casey at the helm in 2000. Zack Mills took over for the forever jaded Matt Senneca in 2001 and had a decent 2002 before being injured and losing any sort of talent at wide receiver in 2003. Yes, it was Jay Pa's fault that Mills would hit Tony Johnson between both 1s on his jersey and Johnson would drop the ball...

Sandusky had more to do with the downfall in 2000 than Jay Pa.

It's a secret
Very few people know that Jerry Sandusky actually retired from coaching football on the evening of January 2, 1987.  He remained on the sidlines for several years after, but never coached again.

Apparently...
...as per in game accounts, he retired right before the last defensive play of that night when he couldn't even send in the play he was so nervous.

They show
a stat the other day during the iowa-northwestern game. Who has the most wins within the big ten the last 10 yrs and they showed the top 4 and PSU wasn't on there...
