Players Charged in Hub Fight - UPDATE BELOW
Brilliant. Just brilliant.
Also charged in connection with the incident is Nittany Lions' linebacker Navarro Bowman, 19, of 6400 Gateway Blvd., District Heights, Md. Both he and Baker are charged with aggravated assault, a felony, simple assault, stalking and disorderly conduct, all misdemeanors, and summary harassment.
Bowman and Baker were arraigned before District Judge Jonathan Grine and released on their own recognizance.
Another football player, reserve defensive back Knowledge Timmons, is charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct and criminal trespass, and will be issued a summons by mail, authorities say. The charges against him are related to what police say is disorderly behavior and verbally combative behavior toward University police after they arrived at the scene of the fight.
I hate this team. I still love Penn State football, but I hate this group of players. They are nothing more than a bunch of street thugs. There is nothing inspiring about them on the field, and nothing to like about them off the field.
I don't ever want to see Chris Baker in Blue and White again. He's a troublemaker. We have five other defensive tackles with NFL caliber talent. We don't need him. He needs Penn State, but he can't seem to keep that in mind.
Knowledge Timmons needs to go as well. He was rumored to be a major player in the April apartment fight with Baker but he never faced charges. He wasn't so fortunate this time, and now the rumors from April carry a little more weight. Kick them both off the team. Now.
I'm disappointed with Navarro Bowman. This is his first run in with problems that I know of. So maybe he deserves a break, but as far as I'm concerned he's one skipped class away from getting the boot too.
Maybe it's true Paterno has lost control of this team. Why have these guys been playing all this time, and even starting in Baker's case, after the incident at the Hub happened several weeks ago? And why is it that the university and athletic department have no comment on this? Didn't they see it coming?
It's a shame that this group of players is helping tarnish the 50-plus year career of a fine man in his golden years. We all had such high aspirations for all of you, and you threw it away on booze and fist fights. You guys don't know how good you have it. I would let them amputate one of my fingers just to run out of that tunnel one time and play one snap wearing the Blue and White uniform you take for granted. Start acting with some class and show some respect for the uniform you wear and the fans who cheer you on. You embarass us all.
3:50 PM UPDATE: Penn Live is reporting that Bowman, Baker, and Timmons will not travel with the team to East Lansing.

It's a real shame....
....to the good guys that used to wear the Blue and White.
The only rally in this team is when they are picking fights.
Mike has it right - these guys are a bunch of street thugs.

There are so many great kids on this team
You don't hate the core of this team - you don't hate Danny "do you have Prince Albert in a can" Connor - and you don't hate Maurice Evans and his one shoe show - and even though you might get frustrated by them every now and then, you don't hate D Will and Justin King - really, you don't.
Notwithstanding, I don't understand how this can even happen (when do they find the time?) - I really don't understand how this can happen twice - to the same kids! On campus - after a football game? it just doesn't make any sense to me.

Don't you think that's a bit unfair?
You're right though, the fact that Joe let this kid start(or play at all)is puzzling. He better be booted from the team.

And when a fight breaks out five years from now
My post is probably a little harsh on the entire team. I was a bit pissed off when I wrote it. Stepping back now I just believe we have a few bad apples that need to be picked and thrown out. Trouble seems to follow Mr. Baker wherever he goes.

To address some things...
As for Knowledge Timmons, he is a young man who spouted off at the police..Read the full article I posted from the CDT. He was looking for his cell phone and refused to leave without it. I am sure if I was in his shoes I wouldn't want to lose an expensive cell phone either, he is a college kid with limited monetary funds, a $50 dollar deposit on insurance alone is costly to someone in his shoes. Now granted he was out after 12:00 am, obviously there at the HUB but really does he deserve to be booted on RUMORS, and a LOST CELL PHONE?
I know this team is disappointing many of us, but lets stick with the kids. Baker may be gone, if that is so, what a shame he had the world and lost it, but the others are first time offenders and need some leniancy.

And the phone Timmons had lost? Was an iphone, I would be looking for it as well.

We've all been to Penn State
So dumb
So unnecessary
But these fights happen every 5 minutes downtown on a Saturday.
Who has the motivation to beat someone up after beating on Iowa, didn't you have enough?
If it was a football player, I'm dissapointed
If it was anyone else and I was a witness, probably would have made my night.

Attitude
If this incident happened in October, and nothing was said or done about it until it was publicly disclosed by another source - then Paterno seems to be 'losing' his ability to deal with these incidents properly.
The concept of "innocent until proven guilty" applies only in the strictest legal sense - certainly a HS or college football coach has the responsibility to be aware of what happens and deal with it quickly - regardless of what the courts decide. If that had been done on a consistent basis earlier, follow on situations might have been avoided.

I ask you again, what else can a head football coach do?

OK, I'll add my 0.02
Finally, after much anticipation by the other players, the kid was kicked off of the team. However, somehow this situation got to the school board. The school board re-instated the kid and allowed him to play with the team! The rationale being that the kid "needed" discipline; and football was one way to instill proper behavior and values "into" this kid. The coach, in a begrudging manner, told us this during a team meeting.
Let me also say that I do not condone the behavior of the players in question. I too agree that they should be kicked off the team. At the same time, perhaps the coaching staff is taking the same type of logic as above and allowing the players to remain on the team in order to "right the wrongs" and correct the behavior. Perhaps these individuals came from backgrounds with little to no discipline and the thought is that football will help to mold the individuals into contributing, law abiding citizens (with a number of bumps and impediments along the way).
I realize the HS football is a world of difference away from collegiate athletics. Again, I too would like to see these guys kicked off the team. Nonetheless, based upon my HS experience; part of me would like to give them another chance. Perhaps these guys need that additional "kick in the behind" to straighten them out. Maybe the coaches should be allowed to apply additional disciplinary measures to regain control of these rogue individuals.
I must add though if laws were broken; these guys need to be treated like regular citizens and either pay fines, do time, etc. After that I would leave it up to the coaching staff (or even a team vote?) to determine the players future with the team.

At First.....I agree.......
My point.....I don't think Paterno has a responsibility to turn children into men....he may have a responsibility turn good kids into very good men. Cut these guys loose. There are other people out there and as Henry Ford once said.....you don't build a reputation on what you say you are going to do.....so this whole Success with Honor slogan rings a bit hollow without some serious punishment. These players need to work a few 3rd shifts making tarp straps.

good points, but
However, I do believe that a Head Coach does have to responsibility to act "in loco parentis" which means "in the place of a parent", and refers to the legal responsibility of a person or organization to take on some of the functions and responsibilities of a parent. Legal - yes, but applicable for some kids that don't have that influence at all in their lives.
So, I do think that the Head football coach at a school does have the responsibility to discipline the players, and should do it as hard and early as feasible to avoid any future actions if possible. I do not think that Joe Paterno did that in the case of Baker and others after the apartment fight - and thus allowed these players to feel that those actions were not intolerable by the Coach.

I'd give just about anything to wear that uniform, run through that tunnel, and play before 110,000 fans. And these jackasses throw it away because they feel they were "disrespected".
