Michigan State Post Game Rant

Congratulations to Michigan State. You were pretty crappy today, but you weren't as crappy as us. Enjoy your Land Grant Trophy. We were getting tired of storing that piece of shit anyway. Please take care of the homeless guy living inside it. He isn't welcome in State College anymore. His name is Anthony and he likes Italian food. He can be useful if you give him small jobs here and there, but don't ask him to wash dishes as he tends to drop things when startled.

That was a fittingly crappy game by a crappy team to end a crappy season. Where should we start? How about the defense.

It's pretty evident now that the move of Tony Davis to safety was a bad one. The secondary was supposed to be a strength of this team. But there was Brian Hoyer slinging the ball around like he's Tom Brady. Yeah, we intercepted two passes. Too bad he completed 17 of his other 20 passes for 280 yards and 4 touchdowns. Here's what I said in my preview.

Devin Thomas is the guy to watch. He has 68 catches for 1087 yards and 5 TD on the year. The other threat in the passing game is TE Kellen Davis who has 24 catches for 369 yards. Shut down these two guys and we'll be doing pretty well.

Thomas had 7 catches for 139 yards and 3 TD. Davis had 4 catches for 106 yards. The next best receiver had one catch for 13 yards. All we had to do was stop these two guys. But they killed us. How can four guys not cover two guys? I don't understand it. They were continually left wide open 30 yards down field. Hoyer completed seven passes over 20 yards. How does this happen? I just don't get it.

As I write this there's a debate raging in the open thread whether the loss should get pinned on the defense or Morelli. I'll give you my take. The defense lost the game, but Morelli had a chance to win it and didn't come through. He only completed 16 of 35 passes for 188 yards. He threw behind receivers crossing the middle. He overthrew receivers down field. He didn't even see guys when they were wide open. Otis Wiley should have had a pick six after jumping on an early out pattern. But as bad as he was and as bad as the defense was, there he found himself with a chance to win the game in the fourth quarter. He easily moved them 50 yards down to the Michigan State 24 yard line.

Brent Carter came in for the injured Kinlaw and rattled off carries of 8 yards, 9 yards, and 6 yards in three of the previous four plays. They were rolling. Then Jay said, "Thanks Galen. I'll take it from here." Incomplete to Bell. Incomplete to Butler. Incomplete to Williams. Incomplete to Butler.

I could go on but I won't. I'll just say the kickoff coverage sucked ass. Special thanks to Navarro Bowman and Knowledge Timmons for not making the trip. We did do some things well. Kinlaw played his heart out. He played hurt and got 125 yards and 2 touchdowns in his last Big Ten game. The offensive line was dynamite. The front seven of the defense had a good game without Chris Baker. Imagine that, kid, Penn State football goes on without you.

PSUncle called me and we ranted about this game for half an hour over the phone. Typing this up is now the second time this evening I've relived the game. I'm sick of it. All that's left now is to find out which crappy bowl game we're going to so we can play out Morelli's last game and move on to the Clark/Devlin era. At least the basketball team looks good so far this year.

This season
Has made me not care anymore. The sad truth is that I was obsessed about Penn State football. I told my cousin that at the worst we would finish ELEVEN AND ONE! That's right! ELEVEN AND FREAKING ONE!

But this team, ugh! I don't even know what to say. I guess Mike took the words out of my mouth when he posted about the HUB fight.

I'll still go to games and I'll still be proud to be a member of this fine blog but I will no longer obsess with PSU. It's not healthy.

Oh and congrats on the hideous trophy you classless Greek oligarchs!

When Is The Last Time.......
Penn State was unranked and killed a team in the top 5 ?  Let me rephrase that......when is the last time Penn State was in the top 10 and killed a team in the top 10 ?  For Penn State fans.....winning by 10 points isn't considered a "killing" by most people living in the post Bear Bryant era of football.

Wouldn't know I love PSU would you.  I am tired.  Very very tired.

Thats Setting the Bar Rather High
I'd say that it has more to do with Michigan and Ohio St. owning us more than anything else.  There are teams that have been ranked in the top 5 and upset this season that I'm sure we could have beaten, but OSU and UM aren't them.

Besides, what other top 5 teams do we play besides OSU and UM?

Whats Most Disturbing
Is the massive cusions they gave the MSU receviers.  Watch the replays of the Thomas TD.  King picks him up after about 15 yards, then rotates him off to Scirotto, who completely blows it, because hes in the middle of the field.  Unbelieveable.  Either it was a blown coverage by Anthony or King, or Tom Bradley took stupid pills this morning.

The secondary is overrated.  They suck.

I'm done defending Morelli to, because honestly, who cares at this point?  When we beat Virginia in the Champs Sports Bowl, I;m sure none of us will be happy.

I'll continue to stick up for Joe, but the Morelli era is going to end in bad memories no matter what I say.

just let Oklahoma score a long passing touchdown. They sling the ball around so much and they're going to be 8-4 I believe if they win. I want no parts of that lol.

Oh God
I know, I really don't want to have to play them. With our soft zone and the way they sling the ball around. It's like a kid in a free candy store. They'd probably score 8TD's and 700 total yards, with 650 in the air.

Could anything be less inspiring than a win over TTU?  I mean really, even their parents don't care about them.  Virginia too.  I'd hate that matchup.  The only possible team that would give me satisfaction if we beat them would be Texas.

And don't look now, but Florida St. is 7-4 and making a charge in the ACC.  God help us if we have the geezer bowl take two...

I don't mean to drink the cool-aid to early, but the way Steve Jones was talking last night, we've got a different swagger to us this year with Battle at the point.  This kid could be special.  If we get out of the Old Spice Classic 2-1 I'll be extremely pleased.

I Watched
North Carolina-Davidson the other night since UNC is my adopted team.  I decided awhile ago that PSU is always number one, but as long as we suck, I might as well get behind a good team as well.

It was a heck of a game.  That, coupled with the Blue-White game OSU weekend got my basketball juices flowing early this year.

Davidson is slept on just because thier a mid-major team. My bball team has always been Duke, even though we get bounced in the tourney early every year lol. I must say the team with Jay Williams and co. I thought we could've made a better run.

What if
Oklahoma is still playing in the Big 12 title game even after they lose to Texas Tech, suppose they win it (imagine Oklahoma beating Kansas or Missouri)...

then West Virginia loses to either Pitt or UConn, not too farfetched.

Who plays for the National Championship against LSU?

Ohio State.

hmm
that'd be intriguing. I wonder how they would approach LSU, they'd probably try to run it after seeing their results last year playing an SEC team. LSU defense gets really nasty though, but they have given up some points this year. Today was the first day I ever cheered for SCUM, because I wanted Overrated State out of the NC picture.

Worse Yet
Imagine an LSU loss.  That equals total chaos.  Could USC creep back in there?  Would Georgia play?

Say what you want about the BCS, only taking 2 teams makes season like this pure drama.  No one will have a legit beef for not getting in this season.  If you'd taken care of business on the field, you'd be in the Big Easy.

Maybe these heartless punks would play better on Saturday if they saved all their aggression for the field instead of beating up their fellow students!!!!  They have physical talent, but no heart, guts, soul, dedication, or common sense.  Should we have beaten Miami in the Fiesta Bowl?  Based on talent, hell no!!  That team was the cosummate team they played with poise and a brilliant mix of intensity and intelligence.  These clowns have it all physically and nothing upstairs (with the exceptions of Connor, Lee, Evans, and Boone).  All of them had better do some serious soul searching about how good they want to be for next year, and that also includes the coaches.

Isn't that the story of the season?
I think all season, we've been beaten in the desire catagory.  I havn't seen that fire, focus, or drive to win this season that I saw in 2005 or even last year.

We've been talking about leadership and youth all year, and clearly, with the fights and on field lapses, maybe we should have heeded JoePas warnings before hyping the hell out of this team.

More than anything, this season is on the kids.  They just didn't have it together.  They remind me of the Steelers last year.  As much as we tried to ignore the off field stuff, you can't seperate on field problems from off field problems.

The good news for us is, the Steelers got it together, and they may be the 2nd best team in the NFL right now.  Hopefully, someone steps up in that locker rooms over the winter and changes the mindset of this team.

#14's fault
Firstly i dont see how he's earn his name back from most of you.

the abc commentators for that game were retards, they kept praising #14 for throwing off his back foot and stupid stuff like that.

The D gave up alot yards and there were open receivers all game long, but #14 couldn't get anything done.  How many times did he miss a receiver that could have been a TD, and the reads he made in the 4th quarter were classic 14.  The last play of the game sums it all up; time running out what do you do?  Dump it off to the middle of the field short of the first down, and the clock runs down.  No crazy bomb down the field, no attempt Div3 15 lateral play, cuz they didn't get a chance, the set up play that was supposed to make it a 40 or 50 yard hail mary ran out the clock.

I Guess..........
if you score 31, even if you could have scored 50 if you had a real QB, you don't blame the QB, you blame the defense.  Even though both defenses held the opponent to their season average in points scored.

Fugi......have you learned nothing from this season ?  Like Penn State going into the Ohio State game, the Steelers haven't beaten anyone and have lost to Arizona and Denver.  I am a huge Steelers fan, but I just don't want you to be too disappointed when the get cremated by New England.

Penn State and Steelers Football plays like a broken record.

Hold the Phone
I've been the biggest Steeler non-believer this season up until the last two weeks.  The win over Baltimore showed the domination I've been looking for, and the win over Cleveland showed the resiliance of a champion.  I don't think the Steelers have a shot against the Pats, but I do think they have a better chance than anyone else.  Whether or not they win the title is irrelevent to me.  Last year, with all the off field crap swirling, the lost to teams they should have beaten.  This year, they're right in the thick of things because they're focused and ready.

I hope the same is true of PSU next year.  If we had beaten the teams we were supposed to beat, we'd be 11-1 right now.  Instead, our lack of focus, determination, and will has us at 8-4.  If someone in that locker rooms steps up in the next 9 months and gets this team together, next year could still be a fun season.

Nice Going........
Steelers.....another fine performance on the road against a supposedly inferior opponenent.

The Steelers will disappoint just like PSU did.  I have seen it a million times.  Don't need a discertation from the stat geeks.  You aren't a good team when you lost to teams you are suppoed to beat.

Then You Are A Much.......
bigger man than I was at your age.

I am not an overly pesimistic person by nature.  But I have seen the same scenarios play out over and over with PSU and the Steelers for most of the last 20 years.  At some point, you have to say...how many excuses can I make up for each of them.  Don't get me wrong, I love em both and I root for them both and for the most part I am proud to root for them both....however, they both have been just a bit short for too long for me to not be pesimistic about them.

What happened?
I turned the tv off as soon as that Jets guy took the ball to the 26. Awful.

To clarify
I know the final score. Just aggravated that played like such crap.

Man
I hope the Steelers beat those cheaters. Just so that shameless homer Bill Simmons wil shut up. "Oh the rest of the NFL scorned them so they can do whatever they want to." I get the impression that if New England wins the super bowl ESPN will create a new documentary.

Coaches Fault
I blame the coaches and the defense more than #14 for the loss.  #14 didn't turn the ball over.  The coaches still haven't fixed the special teams, as shown by the kickoff return over the 50 for MSU TD #4, and then the inability to tackle the runner on the fake punt (he WAS bottled up).  Then the play calling on the last drive.  Great running by the THIRD string RB, then why pass 4 straight times with 2 minutes left with 2 timeouts.  JoePa wanted to make Morelli a hero at the expense of the team.  Joe is hesitant to criticize Morelli why, because Jay Paterno is Morelli's position coach.  And by criticizing Morelli, it would be an indictment of Jay's coaching, and what father would do that.  I've about had it.  I blame all four losses on coaching this year.  Changing the game plan against Michigan minutes before kickoff; the Illinois loss was a hangover from UM, not going for it on fourth and 2 against OSU, and the above mentioned play calling on the last red zone drive against MSU.  I'm not throwing in the towel yet, but it's getting hard to think of anteing up the extra money for the Nittany Lion Club next year (and you know ticket prices will also be raised by $2/per, like they are every year!!).  I have just about had it with a proud program losing to inferior competition due to stupidity.  We are getting old and stale.

New Poll..
Hey Mike, how about a new poll for the blog, "Which loss was the worst of the season?" scUM, tOSU, Illinois, MSU.  Each one hurts in its own way.

I could make an argument that each game is the worst of the season, so I am interested to see what the rest of the bloggers think.  This could also be a good Blue-White Roundtable question.

MSU
We found a way to lose to a team that always finds a way to lose.  MSU blows.  The other losses were to actual good teams.

Michigan is not good
We're not very good either but we should not have lost to them. The same for Illinois and MSU.

So Basically the entire Big 10 sucks?
I don't buy that.  I think Ill. and Michigan are good teams.

Illinois
isn't half bad but Michigan stinks. And no the Big 10 doesn't suck. Yesterday the only team that didn't have a shot at a bowl game was Minnesota. That is a competitive conference.

Michigan on the other hand is not that good a team. I've watched enough of their games to see that there is no way we should have lost to them. You take away Morelli's fumble in the 1st quarter and we win 9-7.

As for Illinois, Morelli cost us that one plain and simple. The defense controlled the 2nd half and the offense didn't take advantage when in position to score. His three interceptions were terrible. Two of them were bad decisions and the other he threw off his back foot.

Now I'm not blaming Morrelli for everything. The coaching played a part too. But we should have been either 11-1 or 12-0 right now with the talent we have. This season is one of the most unfulfilled seasons I can remember. When you look at all the ability this team had and then look at the final result... Simply unfulfilling.

Maybe the Lions just aren't that good.
Only once in the past decade has Penn State finished higher than fourth in the Big Ten standings, and that was in 2005, when it was 7-1 and earned a share of the championship.
Since the 2000 season, the Lions are just 32-32 in conference play. That includes a 5-16 record against Big Ten heavyweights Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin, and a 27-16 mark against the conference's seven other teams.

Let's face it - maybe Penn State and Michigan State are closer competitors.  Not sure that we can honestly say we compare anymore with tOSU or Michigan or Wisconsin.  Cripes, or even Illinois.

I have been saying this...........
all year.  At some point in time you have to put the week to week "if we would have done this" and "if we would have done that" conversations to the side and just realize we aren't that good.  Throw out the cupcakes and we aren't winning many football games.

tells me that we compare quite well to Wisconsin.

CO-CHAMPIONS
Why do people, even our own Penn State fans, refer to 2005 as a co-championship?!?  We played them head-to-head and won.  Therefore, we were THE 2005 Big Ten Champions.  Period.

Because D-Bag......
Delaney or however you spell his name won't go with a conference title game.

Funny how so many Big 10 fans want a National Playoff, but you don't hear too much about a playoff for the title in our own conference.  Hmm.
