Alamo Bowl Open Thread

Penn State 8-4 Texas A&M 7-5

My internet connection is coming and going so I'm going to post the open thread now. As far as I know the game is on ESPN at 8 PM unless the NFL decides to broadcast the Patriots-Giants game on there too. This will probably be the lowest rated Penn State bowl game ever. It will be interesting to see if it hurts us in future bowl selections. Hopefully not.

I don't think
that the bowl selection people will look at the ratings in a vacuum. Pray that we will run the table and make it a moot point.
JoePa is my hero.

1995 Rose Bowl
Watching this game on Big 10 Network.  That Penn State team was HUGE.  Milne, Jurevicius, Collins, Brady.

By the way....Oregon couldn't run on that Defense, but they threw for almost 300 yards in the first half.

I'm fairly optimistic
about this game, Lions should be able to do business on the 106th-rated aTm pass defense.  I'm looking for something like a 34-17 win.

As for ratings, don't bowls also consider how well the fan base travels?  If so that's a huge plus for Penn St.

hey
hope y'all had a Merry Christmas. Hate to do this to you guys, but I'm going to be rooting for Texas A&M this evening.

Not that I have anything against you, nor do I hate Joepa, but the Aggies are in the Big 12 and I have a nephew there (although he's no longer a cadet).

Should be interesting... Texas A&M is so sporadic, you don't know whether you're in for an ass-kicking, or a team that won't even bother to show up. Maybe you'll get both, the Aggies will show up for the second and fourth quarters or maybe for 10 minutes of the whole game.

If their running game gets going - if McGhee (qb) can run his offense, the Aggies will score some points.

Wow--

I haven't checked in since the last game.  Where to begin?  I'll keep it short.

Morelli--graduate already.  Missed receivers, tunnel vision ignoring wide-open receivers, etc.  How many times have I yelled at the field or television over the last two seasons?

PSU in general--shake off the cobwebs and play tough.  A&M has everything to play for--a new coach, a new beginning, etc. next season.  PSU has a bit less to play for, unless Joe/the powers that be play Clark and/or Devlin a bit more.  Sure, next season looks bright--but so did this season.  I'll believe it when they've won 'em all.

And--a Cornhusker poster here?  I thought we chased you folks away in 2002.  ;-)

One other thing:

Hall/Paterno/powers that be--when something works, use it.  Don't have Kinlaw run down A&M's throats for a 2nd and short, then go to two short passes for the 1st down.  Penn State football is smashmouth football.  Jam it down their throats.

Eh
I don't know why they'd ever assign Flutie and James to the booth for this game, though.  James's PSU comment history is less than stellar, and over time I feel as though Flutie is joining in.  Did you notice how Flutie seemed sure that the incomplete pass at the 5 with 40-some seconds left was indeed an incomplete?  To me, the ball didn't look like it came out until after one foot in, one foot out, and a hand pushing the ball to the ground.

Whatever though.  I want to see PSU win this, but I also would not be hurt if they lose.  This year's team is not "lovable," and at times was not tolerable.  I'm ready for Morelli to shift from QB to "legacy."  And by legacy, I mean simply we speak of him in the past tense.

Pryor
Speaking of Pryor, if Penn State has ANY hope of landing him (which right now is somewhere between no chance and about 25% I'd bet), they NEED to play Clark.  Show some commitment to an option-running, dynamic QB.

I know I've said it before, but how I miss Michael Robinson.  Sure, some his throws were Morelli-esque, but he had the legs and leadership that Morelli simply does not.  Defenses salivate for Morelli.  Defenses lost sleep because of Robinson.

Pats take the Lead
Sure, it has nothing to do with Penn State, but since Gumble and Collinsworth are spewing over Brady and Moss like high school girls over the high school quarterback (I wonder if Morelli was a ladies man?), I may as well as note it here.

I can't stand the aura currently emanating from New England, what with the Sox, Patriots and possibly the Celtics this year.  Add the fact that Brady is a Wolverine, and I don't know if I'd shed a tear if a glacier slid down from Canada and covered that portion of the country.  :)

Clark QB, Morelli WR
Most apt note of the announcers tonight.  Placing Morelli at WR is a useless move, unless PSU intends to allow Clark one shot at throwing at some point in this game.

by RoaringSprings on Dec 29, 2007 10:54 PM EST reply actions

This isn't true
no point in having #14 in there.  if you have Clark throw it's better to have him throw to an actual WR.

#14 useful if you lateral to him then he throws, but who would that fool?  NO ONE, get that idiot out of the game.

Nope...
Anderson's not retired, though he probably should have about 10 years ago.

Was sitting in end zone seats behind the Blue Band, all the way in the back row of the first level.  The A&M crowd was large but not really as vocal as the PSU crowd.  Maybe it's just my impression from where I was sitting, but the A&M crowd didn't seem all that loud.

The Evan Royster TD looked like it was in slow motion... looking forward to three more years of him.  Also looking forward to a couple years of Darryl Clark at QB.  Would have been nice to see him throw it around.  It's a good thing A&M couldn't really stop Clark when Morelli lined up at WR... it's really amazing when an opponent doesn't see that coming.

Boone wasn't roughed on either kick, he did a nice job of flopping.  He wasn't even touched on the first one.

Why do you roll your eyes?
Was Tony Hunt not good enough for the two years before Kinlaw?  Are you suggesting that its the coaches faults that he wasnt in there before this year?

If you are, then your just looking for things to rip Joe on.  I'm sorry, as far as backs go, Joe has been very good in choosing his guy the last few years.  He gave Scott his chance and he blew it (and the Michigan game) but to his credit, when he saw Scott was sucking, he immediately started splitting time, and eventually wound up off the team.

But to the oringinal question, yes, I think he should be drafted, perhaps by a certain Pennsylvania team that lacks real running back depth when their M.O. is "smashmouth football".  Come to think of it, ol' 26 would look pretty good about now...

by Adam Bittner on Dec 30, 2007 6:46 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously.........
I don't know if you are Paterno's long lost 3rd cousin or something, but your sensitiviy to any insinuation that Paterno isn't infalible really detracts from a lot of the good points you make.

Larry Johnson just suddenly comes out of nowhere and runs for 2000 yards and into Heisman contention.  Same for Robinson.  I played football in high school for a guy like Paterno in that he would ALWAYS give the Sr. the nod.  Even over the really promising underclassman.  And we were worse because of it.

You can't talk about how importannt loyalty is to Paterno out one side of your mouth and then act like that same "quality" couldn't possibly be why certain people are sitting the bench when they shouldn't.  Guys his age value things tha a lot of people half his age do not.  There is a reason why we have the saying "Loyal to a fault.".  I'll gurantee you this....with literally no game experience, Clark will come out next year and make people wonder what the f++k Paterno and the staff were thinking this year by playing Morelli.

Eric Watters Atlanta, Ga.

by ech2os on Dec 31, 2007 10:04 AM EST up reply actions

Weeellll,
I was kind of talking about running backs but, ok, if you want to talk about QBs, lets.

#1 I have a lot of problems with the concept of getting the underclassmen in there just to build for next season.  Whatever you think of Morelli, he paid his dues, and I feel he was the best quarterback on the team this year.  He deserved to play his Senior year.  You don't bench a captain just because you aren't going to a BCS Bowl game.  Thats not loyalty to a fault, that just not being a total sellout.  Those 6 weeks of additional practice for the bowl game did much more for the development of Clark and Devlin than some snaps against MSU and Temple could have done.

The people here calling for Clark are the same ones that called for Morelli over Robinson, Robinson over Mills, etc.  Its a never ending cycle that seems satisfied only by throwing a true freshman in at QB.  Ask Pitt and Notre Dame how that works.

I'm sorry if i prefer 9-4 to 7-6.  Maybe that makes me a bad PSU fan, but I'd rather have Clark and Devlin endure the growing pains in practice against on of the best defensive units in the country, rather than on the field against MSU.

God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...

by Adam Bittner on Dec 31, 2007 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

I'm Curious.......
why do you presume that we would have been 7-6 without Morelli ?  I am not sure which games you think he won for Penn State this year.  In fact, he couldn't even run out the clock in the Bowl Game that almost went to overtime.  I didn't see him win anything.  Consequently, I think his track record indicates he held us back from winning more games.

All I saw in that bowl game was Clark come in and bail out Morelli and then get promptly shown the sideline.  Thats real loyalty.

Eric Watters Atlanta, Ga.

by ech2os on Dec 31, 2007 1:10 PM EST up reply actions

I Can't
Pick out a specific game for you that Clark for sure would have lost had he been in there.  However, considering the fact that he is completely unproven as a passer, what makes you think that he wouldnt have made some big mistakes in some of the wins this year?

Could he have led the team down the field for the winning score at Indiana?

Could he have held on for the win against Purdue?

Could he have made that throw to Butler in the Alamo Bowl to grab the momentum?

I suppose we'll never know, but I, for one, am glad we won't.  Morelli may have lost us a couple games this year (Ill. and Mich.), but unless your one of the greats, you're going to have bad days.  He had them.  Hes not a great QB, but I feel he was our best quarterback this season.

God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...

by Adam Bittner on Dec 31, 2007 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

One More Thing........
explain to me why putting time in alone should gurantee somebody playing time ?  That makes no sense.  Paterno has an obligation to more people than Morelli.

Why do you think teams like Florida and OSU and Texas and USC are constanly in the running ?  One has to do with talent for sure, but they play youth early and often.  Even in practice, I don't think Clark or Devlin are getting the looks they need to come out and play.

Eric Watters Atlanta, Ga.

by ech2os on Dec 31, 2007 1:14 PM EST up reply actions

I tend to agree here.
Today's "winning" programs play the best athletes.  [No need to discuss "clean" versus "winning"--I firmly believe you can keep it clean while playing the best athletes.]  Now, if Morelli is as good as the PSU QB situation gets, that's fine--and yet frightening at the same time.

If, on the other hand, Morelli's position is simply due to "putting time in," then, again, this is frightening (though not at all a surprise as this has been Joe's modus operandi for a long time).

"Putting time in" is fine for middle school athletics.  It's unacceptable for college athletics.  Shoot--in most high schools, if you are not the best, your butt gets intimate with the pine.

God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...

by Adam Bittner on Dec 31, 2007 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

My Point...
Was not that Morelli should be given the job because he was a Sr., but that it shouldn't be taken away from him just to build for next year.  You don't do that.  If Clark was actually the better quarterback, then he should be the starter, but I'm not convinced, and clearly neither were the coaches, that Clark was capable of leading the Morelli offense as well as Morelli himself.  Therefore, he sat in the bowl game.  I have no problem with that.

Believe it or not, winning the bowl game is important.  That might be a mind blowing concept to some of you, I know, but its true.

Whats more upsetting is that Clark WAS given a lot of playing time in key situations, and people still aren't satisfied.

To say Clark and Devlin aren't getting the looks they need from the coaches is preposterous.  Do you really think they, the future of the program, stand off to the side during practice and toss balls to eachother while no one is looking?  No way.  read some of what Joe says about them.  He knows what he has.

God Created the World Out Of Nothing, Paterno Built A National Superpower On Cow Fields...

by Adam Bittner on Dec 31, 2007 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

I Am Not Here.........
to argue with you, but you go on believing what you are saying.  I don't buy it.  I'll be here next year to eat crow if Clark doesn't light it up....but even if he does light it up I am sure you will think that is because of the Joe Paterno Genius rather that PSU basically running the same ole shitty plays with different players to get different results.

Did you notice in the game the other night that when Texas A&M opened it up they got people open and when we tried something non-traditional it either blew up or went nowhere ?

You HAVE to let your best athletes learn in real time.  You can't let them practice.  If you think Clark and Devlin are getting better practicing a few days a week you have never played football.

Urban Meyer has already said that Cam Newton is going to get a lot of playing time next year and he has a Heisman Trophy Winner returning for cryin' out loud.  What exactly did we gain by not seeing Clark in the half assed games we blew people out in this year ?  Its not like Morelli didn't deserve to get benched at points this season.

And yes.....I believe Clark would have more than made up for some mistakes with his legs.  He was so clearly more athletic than a lot of the people in that game the other night it almost nauseated me to watch him bail Morelli out every time.

How about this........I'll meet you halfway....I could talk about this all night, but what is your answer to this.........do you think it took some offensive genius to line Clark up in the gun and have him run the ball with Morelli split out left ?  The answer to that would be no.  So how do you explain that not being there all year ?  It doesn't matter if the other team knows its coming if you have the athlete to execute it......see Tim Tebow last year at UF for proof.

Eric Watters Atlanta, Ga.

by ech2os on Dec 31, 2007 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

Hey
I never said I'm not confident in Clark for next season.  I thought it would be fun to watch him before he put on a show in the bowl, and now I'm even more excited for next season.

That said, I still feel our best option this season was Morelli.  Hes been throwing lasers all year, and yes, I realize sometimes to the other team, but for the most part, hes been good at getting the ball to the receivers.  The statistics prove it.  As I said before, hes a good college QB, but not a great one.  I;m not sure Clark is a great one yet.

Finally, lets stop comparing ourselves to Florida, USC, and Texas.  We aren't.  We Are Penn State.  We've had success doing it JoePa's way.  3 years ago, we went into the season with an option quarterback with little experience following an underacheiving starter the year before.  We went 11-1.  Now, we've got a battle hardened receiving core, a stout offensive line, and a defense with a lot of promise.  I'm hopeful, and I'm not going to dwell on the snaps Clark didn't get this season.  I'm pumped for Coastal Carolina, and you should be too.

Clark played in the Bowl game, and did really well, so I don't even know why we're having this arguement.  Joe put him in there for a lot of key plays, and he made them.  How can that not make you feel confident?

One more thing.  This years offense was built around Anthony Morelli.  I'm pretty sure there will be a lot of changes to the entire offense that will be implemented for Clark, providing he passes his classes and wins the starting job, but I don't know how much Clark could have learned by jumping in and running the dumbed down Morelli offense in the middle of the season just for the hell of it.

Few thoughts from the Alamo Bowl....
My wife and I were in San Antonio for the game.  Here are some random thoughts.....
1.    San Antonio is a great town.  The Alamo and the Riverwalk are must sees.
2.    The AlamoDome is not impressive.  It was a pain to get over there and then to get out of the garage downtown.  It just isn't right watching football indoors.  At least they served beer.
3.    The A&M Band was awesome.  The drills that they pulled off were beyond belief.  I saw a youtube post of the band, but the quality sucked.
4.    PSU fans, outnumbered by about 10-1 were loud and supportive.  I had tickets on the 45, PSU sideline, and you could tell that PSU was there.  My seats were around some older PSU alums and I was asked to sit down a few times, but we still had a good time.
5.    A&M Fans were fun and loyal to that program almost to a fault.  They understand that they will not win the Big 12 or a NC, so going to this level bowl is a reward.  Its funny, almost every A&M fan asked what "Nittany" was, and most of them were hoping for a close game.
6.    The first time Clark was in at QB, AM was on the bench, A&M was able to put an extra LB in the game to stop the run (out of the first time-out).  Leaving AM on the field kept the D honest opened up the middle.  I was hoping to see a throw downfield at some point to really open things up for him.
7.    Tom Bradley looked VERY uncomfortable pacing the sidelines after the 4th qtr punt.  I can't figure out what was bugging him, even if we punted, the D would only have to stop a Hail Mary....It was like something else was wrong.  Left me with a bad feeling.....
8.    Sean Lee is a stud.  He is every bit the LB that Conner is.  They look like twins reacting to the ball on play-fakes and draws....
9.    How did A&M not give the ball to #11 on the 4th and 1 play?  No doubt he would have scored....in fact I don't think he was even in the game....

Florida State-Kentucky
Anyone watching this?

Anyone see Bowden complain about the penalty on his guy for flipping into the endzone?  And his claim that no one gets penalized for it except for his guy?  And I thought Joe was disconnected with reality.

And Florida State still has a team of thugs.  When I was at the Orange Bowl, I couldn't get over what jerks they were.  Against Kentucky, they're as bad.  Bowden may have the wins, but his team is no more classy than the University of Miami.

Yeah, that's the difference between Bowden and Joepa.  Bowden complains that it shouldn't have been a penalty (yeah right), and Joepa sits the player for the rest of the game.  Gee where are 36 of our teamates?

Indiana - Okla. State
Maybe it will take them a half to calm down like Colorado did last night against Bama......but the Hoosiers look flat footed so far against OSU.

Trust Me......
you don't want to see this fiasco.  Indiana isn't doing anything to dispell the lack of speed perception issue the Big 10 suffers from.  IU looks like they are chasing constantly and the only thing determining when OSU scores is field position.

Indiana.........
is going to wonder what happened when they wake up tomorrow.  The quickness of the OSU skill players is causing missed tackles IU isn't going to believe on film.

Hmmm.....
Looks like the Good old Big East isn't exactly putting on a clinic are they?  USF got totally smoked today, and UCONN lost to Wake, hardly a perenial power.  They'll probably win Rutgers' meaningless game, but WVU is for a wake up call.  Lets just hope the Big 10 comes out of tomorrow with a shred of dignity, and we can declare victory.

1:25 left in Florida State-Kentucky -- Injury
Seeing this, I am more convinced that Bowden has guys fake injuries.  Does anyone remember the 2005 Orange Bowl?  Bowden's guys went down with more cramps than PSU's players (did PSU have any?), yet they practice and play in the heat.  Here, again, Florida State has 3 timeouts left, trying to stop Kentucky's drive, and again, a FSU injury.
