We're All Hokies Today

This is just shocking news. A gunman has killed 29 people on the campus of Virginia Tech today. More people are in the hospital and the death toll is expected to rise.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. This is just so senseless I don't even know what to say.

UPDATE: I see a lot of people hitting this post by googling "We are all Hokies". Before you go, please make sure you read my follow up post. May God bless you all.

Shame on ESPN Radio
When I turned on ESPN Radio after school today, they only had a small thing about how Coach Beemer and the other VT coaches joined together to remorse, pray, or something about the shooting at their school. There was no indication of 30 dead, no indication whatsoever that it was severe. Instead they returned to the Dan Patrick show, and Dan proceeded to not talk about the VT shooting at all. When I got home and checked on line and found the severity of the shootings I wondered why ESPN Radio decided to not dedicate any of its airtime to the tragedy that had happened at VT.

I will definitely say a prayer for all those affected by the shootings and hope that we find a way to limit and perhaps end these shootings somehow.

Times like this...
...make us realize how trivial sports really are.  Nothing that would happen in a football or basketball game between PSU and Virginia Tech could make me any less sympathetic to the student body and families of the victims at Virginia Tech.

On the other hand, this is why we have sports. Real life is often tough and too often senseless. From time to time, it's nice to lose oneself in a game, in scouting reports about a game, or a fruitless debate with Pitt fans.

Now, however, is not in between those times.  Now is a time to be thankful for what we have, and say a prayer for those who have less as a result of the tragedy in Blacksburg.

No shame on ESPN
Hasuprotoss, I have to disagree with you on ESPN's coverage. I believe that Dan Patrick and his producers did exactly what they were supposed to do as a Sports Program. They made mention of it - as far as it involved the VT Tech sport figures, and let it go.  ESPN is not an all-news station, it's sports programming, and the tragic shootings at VT Tech were not a sports related story.  All Patrick would have been doing is speculating, outside of his area of expertise, on third and fourth hand information.

Too often we have people in the media commenting on things they are not qualified to, or chartered to, comment on.  ESPN avoided that yesterday, and in doing so left the actual coverage of the situation to other news programming (of which it's parent company has plenty).

In regards to Patrick covering Don Imus' insults to the Rutgers Women BB team last week - that had a definite sports angle, and therefore was appropiate to discuss on his show.

Understood
Yeah, I rushed to make an ill-advised comment. I see clearly what you mean.
