Offensive Coordinator

Today Norm Chow got fired as the offensive coordinator from the Tennessee Titans.  Remember Chow was the coordinator for USC and he helped develop a lot of NFL talent there.  I haven't heard a single thing and I don't have any inside sources, so don't get your hopes up, but with the possibility of Galan Hall retiring, I think this guy would be a great addition to our coaching staff.  We need someone that will take the offense to the next level, and although he faltered in the NFL I think he could definitely help out Penn State's offense.

You're probabaly right
But we must stay ever vigilant. As the Marines say "Complacency Kills". And yes, I am insanely paranoid.

One a similar note:
I am not so blind/naive to realize that he will most likely still be involved in the coaching system.

I do hope he improves...sooner than later!

Chow
I wonder what the deal is with Chow. I get the sense he's a saban-like personality that rubs colleagues the wrong way. He's a good coach, tho, and has developed a ridiculous #of Qbs (not including Vince Young the past two years, which hasn't worked)

It sounds like he's headed to oppose Carroll at UCLA: http://www.latimes.com/sports/college/ucla/la-sp-chow16jan16,1,5804183.story?coll=la-headlines-sport s-coll-ucla

Spread HD
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/football/ncaa/01/17/pennstatespread.ap/index.html

I think this answers the question of who the new, or should I say, only offensive coordinator will be next year.

I love it.  This is honestly the first time I can agree with JayPa.

spread offense
It is great to see this article, the spread should really make next year fun to watch and hopefully push our offense to the next level.

Don't tell people
That JayPa will be the next OC.  They gave me to me above for that same theory.

If you think about it
Penn State has been running a clunky version of the spread since about 2001, with the exception being the two years with Morelli, and games where Larry Johnson ran for over 200 yards in 2002. The Seneca/Mills team in 2001 started using spread principals against Northwestern to break out of a 0-4 start and almost get to a bowl game.

A second, moderately related point, I don't think that Northwestern gets nearly the credit they deserve in being one of the forerunners of the spread offense.  It was Northwestern's offense that PSU "borrowed" heavily from in 2001 to get off the carpet.  Although the widely reported trip to Texas before the 2005 season gets much of the credit for the Michael Robinson season.

Northwestern
That's why I get a kick out of reading articles and Michigan blogs about Rich Rodriguez "bringing the spread offense to the Big Ten." Northwestern has been running the spread for over a decade. Indiana and Illinois run it. Michigan State ran it under Smith. Purdue has been running a different version of it ever since Joe Tiller came along. It's not like the Big Ten hasn't seen it before.

Wait
There are other teams in the Big Ten other than OSU and Michigan? Blasphemy!

Obviously..........
its a different story when the team running the offense is "out-athleted" and only using it to basically overcome those deficiencies.

As everybody has heard before........SEC Fan was talking about how that "gimmick" wouldn't work in the SEC and obviously with UF scoring 43 points a game this year it has.

What I like about it, and I don't profess to know all the flavors or even the ins and outs of it, is it gives you so many options on 3rd down.  When its 3rd and 6 you don't have to hope you hit an out to Williams :)  Clark or Devlin can read and go from there.

Versatility
I agree 100%.  The spread removes predictability from an offense.  Something that plagued our offense under #14.

The gimmick worked for Florida because they have SEC speed! haha.

You know
Norm didn't falter in the NFL, he just had an overrated QB named Vince Young. The media loves him and he's as bad as Alex Smith, you could flip a coin for whose worse on what day, but they both are something to laugh at. I can't fault Norm for having to deal with a oversized rb playing qb, throwing  a measley 9 tds and 17 ints.... I came to the conclusion the media hypes him, becuase he beat the team(USC) that yr, that they hyped like none other.

Speaking of #14, he hurt his stock(slightly more) at east-west week practice it sounded like. I was doing some reading on draftscout and it said at practice, he shown flashes that when he zipped passes but he could never hit any receivers in the numbers. It went on to say, he held the ball to long as if he was afraid to make a mistake.....

WE ARE, PENN STATE!

hey
I'm a titans fan and anyone who watched those games would tell you that Chow's playcalling was horrendous. Throwing on 3rd and 4 when your running back is on fire is dumb. (sound familiar?) VY was also hampered by a terrible receiving corps. I can't find the stats on drops but there were some great passes just dropped by TEs and WRs. A nagging hamstring injury didn't help his running confidence either.

The new guy they have coming in helped to make Steve McNair a pretty good quarterback for awhile. Norm wasn't used to having talent that wasn't beyond every other team he played all year. The Titans are going for something familiar and proven to develop Vince Young.

JoePa is my hero.

Because he was a Nittany Lion, I want him to do well...but last night did not help.

I hope the combines help...

Chow
Norm is the one who made the Titans draft VY over Leinhart so it is his own darn fault he got stuck with him.
