Around SBN: Identifying The 19th-Best Team In Baseball

Devlin

Rumors have been flying around that Pat Devlin feels unhappy and may transfer.  Does anyone know anything more about this?  I dont have a problem with Daryl Clark, but neither of them have played.  Who knows?Any news bout Justin King leving for the NFL?  He would be much better off to get healhy and play the way we know  he can next year.  How about that B-Ball team.  How did this happen?  Lets hope they can keep it up. Good job fellas.

Devlin
He went from being an All American in high school to not seeing a meaningful snap in two years of college. I would be a little upset too. But I think he'll be ok. He'll get a chance to compete for the job this spring.

Well...
...the redshirted him and he sat behind a Senior starting his second season. Seems about status quo - what else would he be looking for in a transfer and he'd lose a year of eligibility...

Devlin
Maybe he feels like he isn't going to have a chance at the starting job.

If he comes out of the spring and isn't named the starter or promised significant playing time I would look for him to transfer.

Devlin
Put it this way, if Pat can't beat out Clark, then we don't want Devlin as a QB.  Clark did nothing to impress me this year and dont say he ran the ball.  If that is the case, just snap it to Royster or D-will and give him those carries.

Devlin will play
Paterno will do the same thing he did with Blackledge.  He will get plenty of playing time and by the end of the year he might even be starting.  He will want Clark to play because he can run.  If Devlin has any running game at all it will over for Clark period.

Devlin
is more mobile than Clark.  Just because Devlin is white, doesn't mean he is not mobile.

Yes, he is a pocket passer, but he has great mobility.

I also heard that his 40 time is faster than Clarks.

Whatever
As long as he doesn't just stand there like Morelli.

Or spin around in a circle and take a 12 yard sack and fumble.

Or....
throw the coaches under the bus even though you had 8 turnovers. YES 8 TURNOVERS in or near the red zone in back to back games that we LOST!

My brother seriously considered purchasing a Morrelli jersey for me for christmas but decieded a joke wasn't worth ruining christmas.

No more Morelli
Is worth at least +2 in wins next year.

Is Morelli the most disappointing player ever at PSU?  I vote yes.

Scott
I think I would say Austin Scott has to be the most disappointing player. In a way we had doubts in Morelli when we signed him. There were questions about the offense he ran in high school and his ability to run an offense. He never put up gawdy numbers on the field like Scott did. We expected Scott to win the Heisman.

yeah
I was a toss up between Scott and Morelli.  Scott had a great game (i mean run) against FSU in the Orange Bowl.

Morelli just never had a great game or play in his two years.

Name one positive play that you will remember Morelli for?

Morelli hi-lites
First play against Akron

Fourth and Three TD pass, and Third and 20 conversion against A&M.

I seem to remember him playing pretty damn well against Tennessee in the Outback Bowl.

Against Tennessee
If pretty damn well is defined as

14-25, 197 yards, 1 TD...OK?!?!?!?!

That is a 56% completion percentage and less than 200 yards.  That is not very good.

Morelli never threw for more than 300 yards in a game.

Morelli won 18 games as a starter and not one of those games was because of him.  He lost 8 games and nearly everyone (except MSU in 2007) was because of him.

lies damn lies and statistics
I'll give you $100 for every completion over ten that John Shaffer threw in the Fiesta Bowl.  Hell if he more than 10 completions in a game more than five times in two years I would be really surprised.  But I wouldn't say he never had a good game.

14-25 for 197 yards and a TD is pretty good when it comes with no interceptions in a win against a tough SEC opponent.  Don't forget Tony Hunt had a pretty nice day running the ball too.  Anthony played well against Purdue this year too, which nobody gives him any credit for either.

No 300 yard passing games has to be considered in the light that Penn State is still basically a run first, pass second, defensive oriented team.  Penn State has been a decent running team for the past two years, but they get into trouble when they don't run the ball well.  How is that any different from every Penn State team you have ever watched in your lifetime?

I get the disappointment in Morelli.  He came in highly regarded and did not live up to expectations, but some of those expectations were pretty far out of step with reality.   But when people talk about him around here it is usually in the same tone as they would talk about the guy that raped their sister.  I don't get that.

Seriously, every loss in the last two years save one is Anthony Morelli's fault?  That's crazy talk.  You really think PSU goes to the BCS this year with Devlin or Clark at quarterback?  Or last year?  No offense, but that is a really simple explanation to a problem that is probably quite a bit more complicated.

Incidently, Shaffer was 5 for 16 for 53 yards and 1 interception in the Fiesta Bowl

No 300 yard passing games
Morelli set single season records in each of the past 2 years in pass ATTEMPTS.  Therefore, if he was any good, he would have had 300 yards passing at least once in his career.

The problem with Morelli is that he rarely hit guys in stride that allowed our speedy WR's to run after the catch.

If Morelli went 4-7 passing on a drive that was considered GOOD.  In the long run, it was his inconsistency that was so frustrating.

He would make some beautiful throws (i.e. Chris Bell against ND) and you would get your hopes up until he would hit Malcolm Jenkins in stride for a TD.

Trust me, I wanted Morelli to succeed as much as the next guy and had so much hope after the Outback performance.  However, in hindsight, the "breakout performance" in the Outback Bowl was just a mediocre QB that didn't make a mistake that game.  We relied on our defense and Hunt to win the game.

scott
I was not that impressed with his FSU game, the holes he was running through were huge and his running style did not look that impressive even though his stats were good.

I just think of Zack Mills his redshirt freshman year.  he was awesome.  but after that he stunk.  threw his arm out i guess, but i thought he was gonna be the next joe montana

Are exactly why I said in another post not to worry so much about not getting Pryor.  Past performance is not always indicative of the future.  If we had a QB coach that could develop a player maybe everyone wouldn't worry so much. Look at Poz - wasn't he only a 3 star recruit?  You wouldn't guess it watching him on the field. Maybe if JayPa would unplug the video games....
