Did JoePa screw up?

More from CNNSI.com's Stewart Mandel

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/stewart_mandel/09/30/cfb.mailbag/2.html

Star-divide

Bear in my mind that I am a Penn State fan. How could Daryll Clark not have started until this year? Is it me or is he a thousand times better than "The QB Who Shall Not Be Named"? With all the comparisons to the 2005 team, it got me to thinking: Michael Robinson also sat behind a pedestrian QB named Zach Mills. Did JoePa completely screw up the '03, '04 and '07 seasons?
-- Alex A., West Caldwell, N.J.

I couldn't agree more. It's no secret JoePa has often been loyal to a fault, and there are countless other, similar examples I could bring up. For instance, how is that Austin Scott -- who was never all that impressive after his freshman year -- remained Penn State's starting tailback last year until the day he was dismissed, while Rodney Kinlaw and Evan Royster were sitting behind him? Have you watched Royster this season? He's the most explosive Nittany Lions runner this decade. (Larry Johnson and Tony Hunt were great backs, but not nearly as fast.)

It may be that "The QB Who Shall Not Be Named" as a junior and senior was a better quarterback than Clark as a redshirt freshman and sophomore, but it seems to me Penn State wasted a whole lot of other offensive talent the past two years by not switching to the "Spread HD" sooner. The traditional drop-back offense tailored to "The QB Who Shall Not Be Named" did little to exploit the athleticism and versatility of guys like Royster, Derrick Williams and Deon Butler. I know it's early, but from what I've seen of it so far, not only is this Penn State offense far more potent than the '05 unit (Clark is a stronger passer than Robinson, and the offensive line and skill players are more experienced), it features more versatility than any spread offense I've seen since the 2004 Utah team.

Note: I did make a slight edit to the Q&A for the purposes of preserving my sanity.

That does spell it out pretty frankly, and I'm impressed Mandel thinks so highly of Royster and the offense.  I tend to agree, but I will add a few devils-advocate counter-comments to flavor the post:

1) Mills was effective enough in 2002 to be a Davey O'Brien watchlist QB in 2003.  You have to believe there was some talent there.

2) Austin Scott had Devlin-like numbers in high school which couldn't be ignored.  Even so, the coaching staff gave up on him early in the 2007 season.

3) If you say that Paterno is unwilling to start underclassmen over seniors, then why did he start such a young WR corps in 2006?  If it's just QB's, then why did Mills get the starting job way back in 2001?

Holy crap

Is it just me or is it WAY too early to suggest that Royster is more explosive than a guy who ran for 2000 yards in one season and almost 300 yards in a single half?

It is...

…but to be honost with you, ANY sports reporter that is speaking(writing) POSITIVELY about PSU/players…I’ll take that any day! I know, I know, they need to fill “x-amount” of lines each day & this team demonstrating BIG #‘s and “0” losses is a story…but LOVE is LOVE; again, I’ll take it beacuse it is constructive!

He' off in his ananlysis though.

In 2003 and 2004 Mills and Robinson were our best players, frankly, our only players. They both had to be on the field, and Mills could not play any other position besides quarterback. We were stuck, because we sucked.

Tony Hunt beat out Austin Scott pretty early on in his carrer, and Austin was always in the dog house.

Before last season Austin took one for the team, sat out a redshirt year and was performing was in the process of getting beat out by Kinlaw when he got in trouble. But he deserved a chance to be the starter at the begining of the season.

I’ll believe Royster is more explosive than LJ when I see it.

I'm piling on your argument

Mandel is trying to be fair but I think his memory is a little hazy.

-MRob played quite a bit of QB during the Mills era. He was rotated in and even was used as the primary QB for part of the Iowa game and the Ohio State game in 2004. The problem was that he wasn’t very good at the time. Maybe it was the team around him, but he didn’t look anything like the 2005 version we all remember him by in 2004.

-And jesse is right, we were so weak at skill positions we almost needed to play them both. Keep in mind MRob is being used as a power back in the NFL, so he wasn’t exactly hurting the team when playing other positions.

-Scott and Royster, if I remember right, were splitting carries from the start. Other than some fumbles I don’t remember AS being that bad, although I do think Royster ended up being much better.

-As far as the Morelli/Royster thing, we’ve beat that to death here.

Morelli/Royster thing?

Forgive me, but what is that about? Did they have issues laying with each other or something? My pea-brain forgets big things like this.

Error: Royster=Kinlaw above

I have no idea why Royster wasn’t playing early on.

by Kevin HD on Oct 1, 2008 4:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Royster was third string at the start of last season

Scott started out #1, but was being beat out by Kinlaw (Buffalo/Michigan).

After Scott was dismissed, Kinlaw was the starter and was being beat out by Royster (Iowa/Wisconsin/Purdue) than Royster got hurt, and that ended that, until the bowl game.

We’ve beaten everything with respect to the career of Anthony Morelli to death.

Why did Mills get the starting job way back in 2001

Two words: Matt Senneca

Morelli Over DC Last Year. . .

I don’t mean to fault DC, who’s quickly turning into a “grand experiment” success, but it’s no secret that he had a hard time making grades out of high school. Could it be that he needed last year to learn the system, and that he just flat out wasn’t ready to step in regardless of Morelli’s faults?

by The IC Lion on Oct 1, 2008 3:49 PM EDT   0 recs

Keep in mind...

our receivers those years couldn’t catch a cold. I couldn’t begin to count the number of dropped passes we had back then, Tony’s hands did not equate to Larry’s feet – though he did improve his last year. Mills or Robinson would have made no matter if no one could catch and a mobile QB is pointless with no passing game to help open lanes and keep Defenses honest. And lets not forget Mills coming back on OSU when Senneca STUNK – in my opinion that gave him a year to start no matter what and have the chance to turn us around – Mills was a pretty good QB as well, I still think Jay hurt his mechanics though. If Clark can beat Michigan this year, I’ll give him the keys to my castle for as long as he wants.

Also...

One, if not our best, receiver in 2004 was Mark Rubin. Yes, that Rubin, the one playing free safety this year.

by SHKNBKE60 on Oct 1, 2008 4:30 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Rubin

He’s a Quintessential Penn Stater. He had great hands, ran precise routes, and made big grabs in 04. Then in comes Williams & King, and on walk Butler & Norwood, and dude has to move to D. And what’s he doing these days? Bringin the motherphuqing wood on opponents. I love it when Joe gets to talkin about players like him:

Q: How far has Mark Rubin come from last year?
JoePa: Oh, I think he’s doing really well. I thought that was probably as good of a football game as he’s played so far on Saturday. Mark, he’s gotten a lot more physically aggressive. He made some plays Saturday that were really aggressive football plays, which he might not have made a couple of years ago because – going back to the question about the couple of linebackers that are ahead of a couple others – well, it’s tough to be aggressive if you’re not really sure of yourself. You go but, should I go? shouldn’t I go? should I go all out? what can this guy do to me? You don’t have the kind of confidence that you need in order to let it all hang out. Rubin is at that stage. And, those other kids will get at that stage one of these days but he’s playing very, very well.

Oh, and of dudes like Graham Zug:
Q: What has Graham Zug done to earn all of the playing time he’s gotten recently?
JoePa: Graham Zug’s a good player. He’s earned it just the way he’s practiced and the way he’s played. He catches the ball well. He’s a good wideout. He may not have quite the speed of the kids he’s played behind but he goes in there and he’s very effective. He’s earned the right to play.
Q:Going back to Graham Zug for a minute… (Is he related to you or what?) He comes from a Penn State family, he’s been coming to these games all his life. How cool and how surreal do you think it is for him to be playing where he had always hoped to play?
JoePa: Some of those questions you’ve gotta ask the kids. They’re all different. How they react to different things… I wish I could say, I know this kid that well, this is the way he’s reacting or this kid is reacting this way or that. I think you’ve gotta talk to the kids about that. Zug, I know his Penn State family and his Dad… and he didn’t have a scholarship. He came here as a walk-on. I just gave him a scholarship this past preseason because he’s worked so hard and he’s doing well. He deserves it. And I think anytime anybody does something where there are doubters that don’t think he can do it and ‘What are you going out there for? You could have gone to a couple of smaller schools and played,’ and all that kind of stuff. And he shows people that, Hey, I’m better than you thought I was. I think there’s gotta be some satisfaction. Now, that would be me. I would be walking around with a sign – ‘See, I showed you.’ – But, that doesn’t mean that’s Zug. He’s gotta be himself. But, everything he’s gotten, he’s deserved. Nobody gave him anything easy. Nobody, even when he came here, thought that he was going to be the football player that he’s become and that’s hard work. He’s worked hard and he’s a great student. He’s a heckuva kid.

didn't Joe admit he was wrong?

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Joe admit that he should have put Clark in last year, at the suggestion of Jay (of all people, though I could understand why you’d disagree)? Morelli had “confidence issues” if I remember Joe’s quote right (which should have unvoluntarily caused everyone to let out an audible "DUUUHHH"). But to agree with Jesse above, I think our opinions of Morelli couldn’t get any lower at this point. Joe made a mistake, but let’s not forget it’s the same man who let MRob play, even when he was getting booed, and look how that turned out. It’s also the same man coaching this current team, which unless I’m mistaken, looks very good.

by dawsonPSU10 on Oct 1, 2008 4:46 PM EDT   0 recs

I seem to remember that, too.

I think Joe’s mistakes that Morelli seems like he should be able to do so much better. We all know now that he never will, but when you look at his ability, you would have that with the right situation, he could really bloom. As the Cardinals have probably learned, that isn’t the case. I think that if you compare what Morelli’s potential seemed to be & Clark’s, you would pick Morelli, too. Joe felt that if he pulled Morelli, then Morelli would never “recover”. Looking back, we now know that Morelli shouldn’t have been in there, but at the time Joe hoped that Morelli would achieve.
Another comment about Joe’s comments about Zug. Do you think Bobby Bowden is still involved in his team enough to say something like that about a partcular walk-on being given a scholarship? Anyone that think Joe does still runs things should see Joe’s comments above.

Is it me

or is Zach Mills always unfairly picked on by Penn State people? If LJ would have been the consistent back in ‘01 the would have been 8-3, and if he had a wide-out who didn’t drop every pass he threw in ‘03 and ’04 they wouldn’t have been any where as bad as they were. Jay Paterno screwed him up, and Penn State people pile on. Mills gave a lot to the program and was a great leader, I think people unfairly put the 3 losing seasons on him.

P.S. a lot of people wanted Mike Robinson to play tailback and start Morelli in ’05, I love M.Rob, but anyone who says they wanted him to play the whole time is just lying.

by PSU4ever31 on Oct 1, 2008 7:44 PM EDT   0 recs

not completely

I don’t blame Mills much at all. I did note his trend to get worse every year, but I chalked that up to Jay Paterno screwing him up, and the lack of supporting cast.

I do agree that I was giving up on MRob pretty fast in the 2005 season. I think it was his 3 or so turnovers in the first half of the Northwestern game. But man, that second half was good, and the final drive was great. I never said another bad thing about him after that drive.

Mills did some good things

but its his fault for getting fat

by blogue20 on Oct 2, 2008 8:43 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Mills got killed

He wasn’t a big guy, and we had him running the option with no offensive line, and for three out of four years, without a tailback.

Once his shoulder got hurt, he didn’t have the arm strength to throw a lot the routes that were the “bread & butter” of the offense at the time i.e. 2 yard out patterns thrown 40 yards across the field.

Mills got destroyed week after week, then consistently got booed. I’ve never actually felt bad for any player, before or since. Usually, I’m a cold heartless bastard who could care less. But Zack was asked to singlehandedly turn crap into a masterpiece with no receivers, no line, and no tailback for most of his career. He even took his beatings at the press conferences pretty well.

by shadowfax on Oct 2, 2008 9:29 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed

Substitute 90% of the current Division 1 quarterbacks in for Mills and they would have faired equally poorly. The guy had nothing to work with… and arguably the worst receivers we’ve EVER had at Penn State. So, you can’t fairly blame him for the majority of losses we suffered during his tenure.
