AP Has Penn St. at #3
Predicting Penn State's Offensive Scripts since 2005!

Coaches poll is also #3
and it is pissing me off that we are not getting the respect we deserve.
AP poll we got NO first place votes and coaches we got only three.
I heard some analysts still saying that we haven’t played any quality teams or been tested yet. Is that our fault? We have played some quality teams and done what we are supposed to do…..blow them out! Oregon state by 31, Wisconsin by 41 and Illinois and Purdue by two touchdowns each. We have averaged 45 pts per game while giving up 11 pts per game.
It’s time for the haters to get on the wagon, because I am going to push their ass off it they wait any longer!

Well...
The whole arguement was “how can you penalize bama for a bye week?” I figure the pollsters decided to jump Texas and that was it. and then leave everything steady. I am not going to go either way on it but it is what it is. Woo for #3

Too early to bitch about it...
Never seen a trophy that said ‘#1 ranked team in the middle of October’… lotsa football left to play and I won’t lose any sleep about it until the end of November.

If you think we're not getting the respect we deserve
imagine how the players feel…which is a good thing. It gives them a reason to comeout and make a statement every single game. There is plenty of season left, and being #3 at this point in the season suits me just fine. As long as we keep winning, the pieces will fall into place.

Patience
Texas can claim a victory over Oklahoma. Alabama has wins over Clemson and Georgia. Our best win is Wisconsin, who is an unranked team. The sad fact is our opponents are not looking good. Not only are we making them look silly, but Michigan loses to Toledo. Wisconsin loses to Michigan. Illinois loses to Minnesota. Ohio State barely gets by Ohio, gets embarassed at USC, and looks terrible against Purdue. At this point I’m almost hoping Michigan State beats Ohio State next week and they have a nice top ten ranking when we play them at the end of the year. They honestly may be our toughest opponent from here on out.
But sitting at #3 with five games to go is a good spot. I don’t think the Texas defense is good enough to win out in that conference. Somebody will outscore them starting with maybe Missouri next week. Alabama is really young and they will have to get by LSU, Tennessee, Auburn, and probably Florida to win out. We just need to focus on winning our games and if we’re ranked #3 after all the games are played then we can complain about not getting respect.

Good point with MSU
You are probably right about Sparty but the voters will always have more love for tOSU as far as a ‘quality win’. If we keep winning out I don’t think we will get ’94’d unless, and this is highly unlikely, that Bama and Texas run the table. If they do I will gladly have to congratulate them on getting to the NC and take a third seat in the Rose Bowl as their schedule and conf championship games will be waaaaaay too impressive for even me to argue with.

Blasphemy!!!!!!!!!
Did you actually say you would “gladly have to congratulate them on getting to the NC and take a third seat in the Rose Bowl as their schedule and conf championship games will be waaaaaay too impressive for even me to argue with.”
If we run the table and are not playing for the national championship I will NOT gladly step aside for Texas and Alabama. I was at the rose bowl in 94 and have never gotten over the shafting we got that year.

How fitting would it be
if Texas once again screwed JoePa out of a national championship? Maybe the ghost of Richard Nixon will come back from the dead to declare them National Champions.

I don't like it either but...
How could we argue with it? We can continue to lay waste to the Big 10 but the way half of our conf foes are shutting it down halfway through the season while the sec and 12 play out and have a conf championship are going to be too hard of a hill to climb with the voters IF they go undefeated. I did, indeed, say it would be highly unlikely that both run it and I stand by that. I don’t like getting shafted either and that is also why JoePa has been working for one more member to join the 10 so we can split and have a conf championship of our own like those southern folk. He knows it hurts us at the end of the year and that would go along way to silencing some of the Big 10 critics.

WHERE KOOL-AID COMES IN BLUE AND WHITE!!!!
Drink it Erik, drink it!!!!!!

I am drunk with Blue and White Kool Aid
I bleed Blue and White and could give two shakes about the NFL or anything else while we are in full swing. I guess I am just trying to keep myself grounded but I really do believe in my heart that we are going to the NC this year as there is no way those guys run the table. I am actually happier being #3 and less talked about. Sorry if I came off as too negative but I swear to you I am consuming mass amounts of the Aid and will monitor my comments from here on out!

Just messin with you Erik.....
I should probably take the I.V. kool-aid bag off for a while and not fast forward the season but enjoy the moment. One game at a time son, one game at a time.
Isn’t it great to have a season where we are actually having these discussions!!!!!

The Kool-Aid is good, but...
Can’t we have some sort of blue & white energy drink with tauring and guarana?
Kool aid is so 80’s…we need to get with the times. Maybe Blue Bull?

My take on it
This is tough.
I think I’d rather have our “quality win” be over Ohio State, since even if MSU is an equal team to them, people will perceive OSU as better. Also, if OSU wins that game, they’ll likely move into the top 10 (plus there’ll probably be some more losses to help them move up. If MSU beats OSU, though, they’d still have a lot more work to do to climb up (they still have yet to play the meat of the Big 10 schedule), and also more opportunities to lose before our matchup with them, so we might not have any top 10 teams on our schedule.
I would like OSU to be deflated before our game in Columbus, though, and if a loss to MSU (and their second loss of the year) puts them into a similar performance as Wisconsin put up against us, I will gladly welcome a 41 point win @ Columbus. It would also be nice to have a BIG matchup to end the season, nationally televised game that (if MSU wins out until that game) would effectively be the Big 10 championship game. That, added to the fact that I go to MSU for grad school, and root on the Spartans whenever they’re not playing against Penn State (unless there are other factors that would help Penn State if MSU loses)
OK, I’m going crazy now. I know that for any of that to matter, Penn State also needs to win out.
Which brings me to my next point. If Penn State wins out and gets snubbed by the BCS selection criteria (either Texas & Alabama are both undefeated, or somehow a 1 loss Big 12 or SEC team leapfrogs us) I will definitely reach out my hand and congratulate the undefeated teams, but I will be bitter and resentful if a 1 loss team leaps us. I would also hope VERY hard for the BCS system to crumble, and for JoePa to leave one more mark on the landscape of college football and set in motion the gears to create a true playoff system.
As I’ve said before: we got screwed in 94, and soon after the BCS is formed. We get screwed by officiating in 2002, and that leads directly to instant replay being used in college football. If we get screwed in 2008, then there BETTER be at LEAST a +1 format (which would lead to the snowball effect and a full blown playoff format in a few years).
Of course, as I’ve also said before, I would love for us to be #1 or #2, and then for JoePa to effectively say “screw you, BCS, we’re taking our ball and going and creating our own postseason” and invite the other top 4 teams to a mini-playoff.
