Penn State's 2009 Opener? Akron.
The Altoona Mirror is reporting that Penn State has filled the 12th an final spot in the 2009 schedule. This means the out of conference schedule will consist of Akron, Syracuse, Temple, and Eastern Illinois; all of these games are at home.
Yeah, I'm a little disappointing too. (H/T: NittanyWhiteOut)

maybe one of them will embarrass USC again next year

Between the horrible schedules and the mismanagement of the basketball program I wouldn’t be bummed about that.

one more year...
until we get to play Alabama…
I don’t want to kill our season early (gulp, Notre Dame a few seasons ago), but it would be nice to see at least 1 quality OOC game early in the year to boost our strength of schedule, and to increase entertainment value for us fans. We have a 2 game series with Alabama coming up in ’10 and ’11 i believe, and that is a good start. I would like to see at least one game like that per season.
Also… bring back the Pitt Rivalry!!!

What we need to do is schedule teams that seem like good teams but are actually easy wins.
Don’t understand what I mean?
UCLA
Boston College
Hawai’i
Mississippi State
Teams that look decent on a resume but are really pretty given wins

BC...
hmm, we tried that and I think we brought down THEIR SOS. I guess the only caveat is don’t do it during the Dark Period.

Yeah
but if you go over there, you get a 13th game. This could help both Paterno for overall wins and we could get 8 home games for Curley’s pockets.

I don't see Paterno
wanting to fly out to Hawaii. That’s a really long flight.

The Akron thing was the rumor going around last week in SC as well.

Next year's schedule
will reflect even worse on the program IF PSU gets shut out of a MNC game because of this season’s schedule. Cart before horse, sure, but it could happen.
Friggin Zips. Maybe Cuse will be much improved next year. And maybe I’ll make millions off of real estate in the next 12 months.

I thought we had Eastern Motors on there somewhere as a home game?
They might put up a better fight than Eastern Illinois.

That could not be more horribly pathetic
Penn State fans should be embarrased about that schedule.
However, with the expected losses of players for next year I can understand such an easy schedule. 3 o-linemen, 3 WRs, Gaines, Sales and the entire secondary will graduate. There is an outside possibility of Maybin going pro (10% or so so far).
The team will need that easy non-conference schedule to develop.

Maybin?
Not unless he adds 30-40 pounds of muscle between now and next month, and does it without losing a step.

He's only a sophmore
We’ll have him next year. Besides I think he wants some hardware to boost his draft profile

But
He’s a third-year sophomore, thus draft eligible. Of course, it would be ridiculous if he came out, I agree.

No way Maybin goes pro
He’s got a great outside pass rush, but right now that’s it. He needs to put on weight and become a run stuffer. And he’s got to develop an inside move and a bull rush if he wants to go high in the draft.

Were gonna need the W's next year folks.
They are going to be at a premium in the big ten.

Don't count us out already
We’re not going to see that bad a dropoff next year. The defense should be good with Astorino and Wallace coming into their own this year. The defensive line will be stacked and our great young linebackers like Colasanti and Stupar should start coming into their own. On offense we’ll have to replace the WR trio, but we have some talent coming in there and we’ll still have Royster, Green and Clark. We’ll miss Shipley, Rich O, and Cadogen but we keep Wiz and Landolt and Pannell has looked really good and already claimed the #2 LT spot as a true freshman.
I’m not saying we’ll go to a BCS bowl or win the Big Ten, but this team should win eight or nine games next year. A total collapse like Michigan or Notre Dame should be out of the question.

I don't disagree
But it’s not a good year to go get another Oregon State type of game. Even if it’s the difference between 9 wins and 8 wins, I think you have to err toward getting the W’s especially early.

Not worth it IMO
If you can’t beat a Oregon State in week three then doing “The Northwestern” doesn’t really seem worth the effort. I hate sitting though boring games and if you aren’t going to beat Ohio State, Wiscy and whoever the flavor of the week is (Ill, MSU, ect) then what’s the point of that extra win? I’m not sure the rest of the Big Ten is really going to be that strong anyway, a lot of teams are going to be dealing with losses similar to PSU.
Don’t forget Lee is back next year, also.

And also
the number of OOC wins hardly matters unless you are going to be part of the NC talk. Otherwise the bowl tie-ins go by conference rank.

Bowl tie ins
Actually, the bowls have some capability to choose teams outside of their conference records and overall record (in addition to factors like TV and attendance draw) have a singificant part of that. When it comes to getting into the BCS championship, the quality of the opponent matters, beyond that the key thing with OOC games is to win them — it matters for rankigns, for TV appearances, for bowl berths and for a general worth of a program.
Now, I think we should have a second BCS team on there to compliment a pretty bad Syracuse team. There’s nothing wrong or scary about having one potentially challenging game along with 3 gimmees. That said, given the open was week #1, I can understand why they’d shy from a real game on that date. The ideal spot for a second BCS team would be instead of Temple in week #3.

Bowl tie ins go to who the bowls want.
But trust me, San Antonio is a better trip than Detroit by a long shot.

Ugh. Was a 1-AA not available?
Am I really going to have to sit through 4 games of this tripe next year? Regardless of whether or not we “need” some weak games next year, the athletic department should do their best to get at least one game against a respectable (ranked) out of conference opponent. Someone brought it up above, but what happens if our weak schedule this year comes back to haunt us? I would like to be able to have Penn State play a good team (on the road would be even better) before Big Ten season begins.

This kinda blows.
On the one hand, we DO need the W’s.
On the other – between the 2 hotel rooms, 4 season tix, parking and ‘donation’, we spend $1000 per home game.
Hopefully there will be a womens V-Ball tourney or something that weekend to make it more worthwhile.
Gack.

Maybin won't go pro this year but...
I don’t think he needs to bulk up. He’s already in the perfect mold of OLB Speed Rusher. I’m a Pats fan, so my ‘ala’ is ala Rosy Colvin & Mike Vrabel. Neither is useful vs. the run, but they were/are brought up to the line of scrimmage to blitz regularly.
Maybin is going to star on Sundays…just not next year.

I hate to say this, but...
I don’t think our SOS will have much impact this year. Unless we have beaten a Top 5 team, we won’t pass either Texas or Alabama if both are unbeaten. If we win the rest of our games and either of them lose, we will be in the NC game.
I don’t agree with this in that I’d rather have us play better teams, but we filled our stadium every game & we have as good a shot as anyone of playing for the national title. Why should they change anything for next year?
by Elihu on Oct 14, 2008 10:56 AM EDT 0 recs
Texas nor Alabama
are going undefeated. Not happening. Assuming we manage to go 12-0 we will only be joined by the likes of a Tulsa/Boise St/BYU or Utah, if any at all.

Agreed.
Also…much like I called USC ending the season with 1 or 2 losses, Alabama will also end up with 1 or 2 losses.

I'd rather play Akron
than another I-AA team or have one less home game.
it is not an ideal situation that fell into our laps (Oregon State)
that isn’t going to happen every year, and we aren’t going to botch scheduling a team like syracuse to our rotating home and home series hopefully anytime soon
it is what it is, good for the students that now get to go to 8 home games. bottom line is at this point in this season i’m not going to let next years SOS bring me down
