Coastal Carolina = No Rose Bowl?
A friend has brought this up. What happens if:
Michigan State beats Ohio State
Ohio State beats Penn State
Penn State beats Michigan State
and we end up with a three-way tie for the Big Ten championship?
Well, you might think that PSU's one loss to OSU's and MSU's two losses would put us in the Rose Bowl. But, that's the Big Ten conference's fourth tiebreaker. Check out the third tiebreaker.
Effective for bowl games following the 2006-09 regular football seasons, the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) will consist of five (5) bowl games: BCS National Championship Game, Rose Bowl, Fiesta Bowl, Orange Bowl, and Sugar Bowl. Participation by a Big Ten Conference member institution will be determined as follows:
a. BCS National Championship Game. In the event the conference has one or two football teams ranked No. 1 and/or No. 2 in the final BCS poll, these conference team(s) shall participate in the BCS National Championship Game.
b. Rose Bowl. Unless ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS poll, the conference champion shall participate in the Rose Bowl. The championship shall be determined on the percentage basis of conference games (tie games counts ½ win and ½ loss). If there is a tie for the championship, the Rose Bowl representative will be determined as follows:
1. An ineligible team shall not be considered in the standings for determination of the conference representative.
2. If there is a tie for the championship, the winner of the game between these two teams shall represent the conference.
3. If there is still a tie for the championship, or if the tied teams did not play each other, the team that played more games against Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams shall be eliminated.
4. If there is still a tie, or if the tied teams did not play each other, or if both teams played the same number of games against an FCS team(s), the representative shall be determined on the percentage basis of all games played.
Ohio State played Youngstown State, Penn State played Coastal Carolina, and Michigan State played 4 FBS schools. Michigan State would go to the Rose Bowl. Craft your letters to Tim Curley now just in case.

Interesting, but unimportant.
If we go 11-1, we’ll be in a BCS game, so who cares if it is as the official Big Ten rep or as an at large. Rose versus Sugar or Organe or Fiesta? What does it matter?
(Yes, a 11-1 PSU would go over an 10-2 tOSU)

Just win all the games and don't worry.

Call me traditional..
…but it kills me that:
1) Penn State hasn’t been to a Rose Bowl in 14 years
2) We schedule cupcakes
3) The Big Ten’s representative to the Rose Bowl would probably be outclassed by USC again

"We schedule cupcakes"
Semi-true. Yes we schedule cupcakes, but so does virtually every other “top tier” football program. If you recall that espn article, we were actually one of the better programs about scheduling “cupcakes” (I think tied for 5th best).
Of course I didn’t completely agree with the way espn handled the analysis, since they just looked at percentage of OOC games against non-BCS conferences, and not necessarily how good that school is (i.e. scheduling Boise State would be considered a “cupcake” by that metric, while scheduling Syracuse woudn’t)

and when I say "better" and "best"
I meant least likely to schedule a cupcake vs a BCS team.

1) Penn State hasn’t been to a Rose Bowl in 14 years
2005 was a scheduling fluke
2) We schedule cupcakes
We’ve always scheduled cupcakes.
3) The Big Ten’s representative to the Rose Bowl would probably be outclassed by USC again
Not if it’s Penn State.

Yes and No
If MSU beat OSU, OSU beats PSU and PSU beats MSU then MSU would be the B10 representative in the BCS.
Its rule b.6.c. which would eliminate PSU and OSU.
b.6.c. If three teams are still tied, and there is a tie game between two of the three teams, or if two or all three of the teams did not play each other, the representative shall be determined on a percentage basis of all games played except, if one or two of the tied teams played more games against an FCS opponent than the other tied teams, then said team or teams shall be eliminated, and the remaining two teams, if applicable, shall revert to the two-team tie procedure.

Michigan State not choke?
hahahahahaha
That’s the funniest assumption I’ve seen all day.
I’d bet Kellen Winslow’s left testicle that Michigan State finishes 6-6 before they finish 10-2.
Michigan State will fail to finish down the stretch….AGAIN!!
This team is a Kirk Ferentz boneheaded call away from having lost to Iowa at home. Give it time people.
All that said, they’ll beat Ohio State this weekend. (Or atleast beat Vegas at +3.5)

Maybe a different MSU...
than you remember. The John L. Smith MSU teams pretty much perfected the late-season choke job, but I like what they’ve been doing since then. They’ve been a defensive football team for the most part, and last year it was us that choked against them. Might not be a walk-over to end the regular season.

I dunno dude
MSU looks legit. This isn’t a John L. Smith/Jeff Smoker team. Dantonio has them playing good defense and Javon Ringer is a one man offense. They rarely do stuff that make you say “WTF?” like JLS did.

Michigan State is Legit
MSU is legit. The key to the team was always Brian Hoyer and the WRs. It appears that they are finally providing enough fire works to free up Ringer. MSU can now make teams pay for stacking the box to stop the run.
Dantonio has built MSU into a solid team. And if his recruiting class holds together, he’ll be building them into B10 contenders in another year or two.
