DON'T ACT LIKE FOOLS ON SATURDAY
We need to get back to the days when opposing fans were treated like guests in Happy Valley -- I'm sick of reading how abusive and out-of-control our fans are -- especially the students.
At the last Michigan game, I saw a Michigan father and his 4 year old son being harassed, boo'ed, and chants of "ASS-HOLE" as he walked up to the stadium. Seriously, a 4 year old, getting called an asshole, by a thousand drunken idiots. That is over the line.
We all need to reject the mob metality when some UM fans are getting beer thrown at them, harassed, etc. Don't be part of the problem and do something to stick up for these people.
Thanks for the fanpost! Please do not post any content from a premium site that requires a subscription. Also, if you just want to share a link, quote, or video, please consider using fanshots instead. Thanks.

And I second it
Lots of UM folks at our motel this weekend, and I’ve spent some time with different groups of them. All very nice. Pointed out on their maps where everything is, best way to get there, and places to avoid (south side of stadium, natch).
I’ve told them to please disregard any drunken d-bags, as we’re happy to have them here. They all knew what I meant.
Interestingly (but off topic), none I’ve spoken to are very pleased with Rich Rod, and it’s not anything related to the on-field performance. Apparently, he refuses to regularly attend the Monday M-Club meetings as his predecessors have done, and seems to be channeling Saban (“I don’t have time for this sh*t”). Traditions are ignored, and they feel he’s more interested in stamping his own signature on every aspect of the program, instead of embracing them and concentrating on team performance. I’m senseing what we all thought would be coming: buyer’s remorse. What a shocker, eh? They’re also all expecting to get thrashed today.
Anyway – these people love their team enough to travel here, so show them the respect they deserve.
Thanks for the reminder, Millz.

I'm sick of that crap too
I’ve been ready to step in moreso this year as well but to be honest, I haven’t seen a single event where our fans acted like jerks. I’ve seen this kind of behavior in previous seasons but not this year.
I agree 100%
The recent trends during big games has been disturbing…Grow up and represent the school well!

A little less booze would help
Too many drunken students and young adults spouting out ignorant things from the pie hole while they hide in the large group.
It is time to act like winners, not whiners, not inebriated jerks.
I haven’t, fortunately, observed behavior like this personally and hope I don’t. I have seen OSU and UM fans just begging to have it thrown in their faces. Poor winners and quiet losers. When you stomp through a tailgate, six times, you are trying to make a point and the point is to egg the home town fans into a confrontation. Ignorance, thy name is buckeye.

Act like winners, not weiners
It’s real simple: treat visitors to Happy Valley the way you would like to be treated at their place.
Viva la Golden Rule!!
couldn't agree more
i went there last year, and was for the most part treated very well.

Agreed
and if anyone sees it and doesn’t say tell the people to stop, they are just as bad as the people doing it.
Even when the opposing team's fans...
instigate a confrontation, the home team’s fans are made to look like the bad guys. The best thing you can do for your school is to be cordial and friendly to the other team’s fans in the parking lot and around town… and then cheer as hard as you can inside the stadium as your team kicks their team’s ass up and down the field.
I would and will never....
yell at a young kid, old man/woman or a REAL adult.
BUT….if a 20something Michigan fan, who jumped on their bandwagon in 1997, says something to me I WILL give him a dose.
by Stately NOVA Lion on Oct 16, 2008 12:43 PM EDT reply actions
And that will prove what?
All it will prove is that you can be as big a jerk as you think he is. Who wins? You certainly don’t win because you just acted like a jerk the same as him. You certainly won’t be defending PSU because you’ll be making the rest of us look bad because you “gave him a dose.”
Please just learn to ignore ignorance instead of returning it with more!
"An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind" -Gandhi
Please don’t stoop to their level…be classy and enjoy a PSU win against a long time nemisis…don’t sour a PSU win with reports of roaming mobs, and out of controll fans…PSU has had enough problems with their national image as of late…lets not add to it…
Some of the same folks who have condemed our players for being involved in “stupid” and “mindless” schenanigans need to realize abusing other teams fans is about the same thing.

wow
talk about a generalization. I’m from Philly and I would never give PSU a bad name. That is like saying everyone from Pittsburgh is stuck in the 70’s…Philly fans always get a bad rap…if you watched video of Dodger fans, they were way worse than Philly fans. But i guess because they didn’t boo Santa 30 years ago or throw batteries, it is okay.

I'm not going to get into a feces throwing contest...BUT
the worst sports experiences of my life were in Philly…I have been all over the east coast and midwest and Canada to sporting events…Flyers and Eagles fans are the most disrespectful fans I have encountered….
At the same time there are people I know who root for these teams who are perfectly GREAT fans and human beings…the problem isn’t 90% of Philly fans…it is the 10% who go over the line and throw beer and food all over visiting fans who are enjoying their game quietly…

Exactly
I watched that series and thought to myself…..exactly why do they get a pass and Philly fans don’t?
The whole Victorino thing really bothered me. Their guy throws at Victorino’s head and he is the bad guy because he pointed out the fact that you don’t throw at anyone’s head. Then lastnight when he got night on the throw from Martin the Dodger fans started clapping. Yep, they’re class and Philly fans are trash. Bull crap!
That along with the fact that Dodger fans were late arriving and quick to leave when their team was in the middle of game 5 of the NLCS. What a joke!

I don't have to admit
People in Philly cheer like no other fans in the country. Philly fans work hard all week and give their best effort and they expect the same from their teams. Nothing more, nothing less!

which is why the Philly mentality has rubbed off on me and i am sooooo fired up for this game. i am going to try to be on my best behavior, but it’s tough when you’ve been getting your ass kicked by the same team for a decade and having to hear about it EVERY year.

Never before...
have I seen or heard of Philadelphia fans sticking up for themselves against accusations of negativity. Most Philly fans that I know are proud of their negativity. They booed Santa Claus, Michael Robinson and everyone in between. In my admittedly limited experience with Philadelphia sports fans, they have been much more negative toward Penn Staters than any other group. Not saying that “every problem at State College” is because of Philly sports fans, but at least admit you are a chronically negative bunch.
Like I said before...
I have been all over watching games and I am generally a respectful visiting fan, I wear my jersey and cheer, but nothing disrespectful and I always try to befriend the fans around me. But on all 6 of my trips to Flyers games, and 4 Eagles games I was treated extremely poorly by the fans. I even went to the game in a Pens tshirt one time and simply sat and watched the game with the notion that I would not cheer at all simply watch, and I got beer and hot dogs dumped on me. I have sat in the cheap seats and in the expensive ones, and the same problems. I have finnally said I won’t go back. Now does that mean the only bad fans in America are in Philly? Heck no, but from my personal experiences they are among the worst fans in terms of hospitality and maturity towards visiting fans. And this is coming from a rather large sampling of other cities, Cleveland, Baltimore, Atlanta, Tampa Bay, Boston, New York, Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo, St. Louis, Cinncinatti, not to mention more SEC schools than I care to admit. Hell Eagles fans were worse than the LSU fans.

are we negative? yeah, i guess so. 25 years and counting….that said, we are getting better-just look at the reports coming out of LA this past week. there were by far more reports of LA fans misbehaving then philly fans.

I was at the Irvin game
The booing was because;
1 It did not look like a serious hit that was Vet Stadium injury all the way. When I saw the injury on the replay I though he was just being a nancy. Michael Irvin was kind of a nancy.
2 And only people who were there know this, but about 75 yards away from the injury Deion Sanders was dancing around like an absolute asshole. Literally like a drunken mongoloid. The vast majority of the booing was directed at Deion, albeit of the "you’re next" variety.
Not Philly’s finest hour, but it was not as bad as the legend makes it out to be.

…and why not take it a step further? Each of us has the potential to be an ambassador for the team, school & state.
If i’m walking toward the stadium and I see an opposing fan I’ll just say, “good luck today.” This is always met with a thanks and if they want to chat I ask them how their visit has been so far. It’s so easy to do and will make their visit a little nicer no matter what else happens.

The 'Good Luck'
Me too. It’s sooo freakin easy. And truthfully can be as much fun as The Taunt.
Our seats all the years growing up have been in WJ, so ever since we were tiny tots, the climb to our seats never began til we watched the visiting team come out the tunnel onto the field. {in old man voice}… I’ve seen some great players come through there, classy and not—both kinds. I remember being in awe as a ten year old at how big Bill Fralic was, which during those years is mostly just about all I did—stand there in awe looking up at those giants. But I remember the other PSU fans always clapping for them, whichever team was visiting, and cheering them on—wishing them good luck and ‘have a nice game.’
So even when I was college-age and the hated (and generally classless) Hurricanes came to town, I cheered the same way. You all might remember that game, ‘92 or so. They somehow managed to get Public Enemy playing through our sound system during their warmups, and Shut Em Down was blaring on our walk to the stadium. And they had three of the baddest ass linebackers ever to play together on the same team: Jesse Armstead, Darrin Smith & Michael freakin Barrow. I’ve never seen anybody before or since come out the tunnel like those dudes did: half the team went out, then a ten yard space, then the three LBs, then ten more yards before the rest of the team and coaches filed out, all in a sloooow and confident walk. My gawd, if ever any visiting players deserved our vitriol, these cats did.
But I kept it classy. And poured my heart and passion into yelling it. ‘GOOD LUCK BOYS’ ‘GOT YOURSELF A TOUGH ONE OUT THERE TODAY.’ Screamed my freakin face off and clapped my hands to soreness. And you know what?
It felt just as good as cursing.

As someone who will be in attendence and wearing UM apparel, I expect a certain amount of “attention.” As long as it is good-natured and non-physical, I can’t complain.
I was at HV for the 2006 game, and that was a little dicey – I’d give it a 3.6 on the Columbus scale. Hopefully a few less hours to lube up will tone it down, but then there is the 9 in a row thing…
Incase anyone is wondering

There have been nothing but good things said from Oregon Staters who made the trip out to Happy Valley. Now, as easy as it is to stay quiet and be friendly when you whip someone’s ass, it’s just as easy to rub it in the face. Didn’t hear any of that from the Penn State fans, expect from drunk college kids (which I think, as bad as it may be, is to be expected)

Student fans vs. Alumni fans
I’ve been to the Shoe and the Big House and I’ve realized one thing and its true at PSU as well is that if the fans are students they will cuss scream and sling as much verbal abuse as they can. But the alumni and traveling fans are some of the best. They will rib you, but treat you with respect and for me saved my life….
Case in point: in 2006 I was at the shoe for Gameday and got split off in a group of OSU fans with my 3 friends. They were screaming, trying to rip our jerseys and hats off. They broke a flagpole behind the Gameday crew and tried to stab us with the pole. They choked the kid with the penn state flag with his own flag and the State Troopers came out and broke it up and threatened to arrest us as visiting fans inciting trouble. Once they left the OSU students tried to start again. But a group of older OSU alumni a Father and his 3 sons (all big set dudes) stepped in a pulled us out of the crowd and protected us from the mob, fed us, drank with us, and apologized for the students. It probably saved our lives. So when I am up there this weekend I am going to be like those alumni that stepped in for me if some PSU students decide to do what those OSU kids tried to do to us. Its hard to believe but it really happened.
I hope some PSU students read this because you’ll never know when its you in that crowd scared for your life because students of that school took it too far…
Predicting Penn State's Offensive Scripts since 2005!
Strange...
From the stuff posted in the papers and such, you would think we were the only fans that did this. I think it was the Illinois game where there was a Collegian article where they talked about “fearing for their lives” while being in the student section. We should never try to be like OSU and Mich., but this is proof that it does happen at a lot of big time programs.
We should be setting the example on how to treat opposing fans, I do believe in that.
I was out in the trenches, which enables me to paint such a powerful picture, like Apocalypse Now.-Cormega
I would fear for my life in the student section
and I’m a Penn State fan.
We’ve been down this road before, but visiting fans sitting in the student section is just asking for trouble. The visiting fans should know better, and the university shouldn’t allow it.
The problem is because there are no assigned seats you can by a few and sit together, so they are the easiest and cheapest tickets to get.
I will never understand why people don’t understand that student section means student section.

Funny story
The last time we beat Michigan in Beaver Stadium was the 1995 Snow Bowl. I was standing in the student section next to this 6’4" guy all decked out in Michigan gear. When Michigan came out of the tunnel they did their thing where they all run to midfield and start jumping up and down. This guy turns around to the people sitting behind us and starts yelling “That’s intimidation right there! That’s intimidation!”
Well, snowballs came flying in from every direction. I just tucked my head between my knees and covered. We were getting pelted relentlessly until this guy’s girlfriend took her third iceball to the head and they left after the first quarter.

I was at that game in the East seats
There was a guy in a Biakabutuka (I think I might have actually spelled that correctly) on an end of an aisle in the student section. Needless to say, he got pelted with snowballs every time he celebrated.

Drunkenness and Class
Are not mutually exclusive. Any sophisticated and kind alcoholic can attest to this. Although I’ll grant that the ability to do both more easily comes with age, and that 18-24yo kids struggle more with the concept and the practice.
There is a little bit of behavior that this post (or this forum in general) can effectively change. Drinking is not one of them. See: Prohibition. But noting that starts down another path of discussion—regulation, how much Big Brother do we really want—and I’m not tryin to go there.

Report from the game
I didn’t witness any bad behavior. I saw a couple of drunks yell at four kids with Michigan jerseys on something like, “Michigan, you stink….you lost.”
Overall I thought that it was a really relaxed atmosphere. There was a kid behind me with a Maize sweatshirt on at halftime who was purposely talking out loud on his cell phone about how PSU fans gave him a hard time earlier in the day but they’re not saying much now. I turned around and told him that he should watch how cocky he gets because Michigan wasn’t going to score another point the rest of the game. He said “we’ll see.” I guess we did because they stayed at 17 the rest of the way. He didn’t say a word in the 2nd half and neither did I. Our defense did the talking for me.
heh
I had a similar guy sitting right in front of me. At halftime he called some friend and was like, “listen to how quiet the stadium is” (which is stupid, first off, since it is halftime, and no one is “cheering” and drowning out the blue band), but I made a point to get as close to his mouthpiece as possible and yell as loud as I could…nobody insults the BIGGER house!
The guy also was making some smarmy comment about continuing the streak. I said that they’d be lucky to get another FG on us. Well you guys know the rest.
In all honesty the guy was a pretty nice guy, and he and I chatted and joked about a lot of things. He left around the end of the 3rd quarter and shook my hand goodbye.

ESPN College Gameday in Happy Valley for Michigan State
The week 13 schedule doesn’t have many great matchups, save for Michigan State at Penn State. My bet’s that Gameday will be paying a visit for Joepa’s possible last game regardless of whether we are still in the MNC running or not at that time. So, let’s practice good sportsmanship now so we have it down pat when it comes time to be showcased for the entire country.
I heard Gameday is going to Ohio State this weekend
to watch the de facto Big Ten championship game. I wish Michigan State would have kept on winning to make Gameday come see us play MSU but at this point it just might not be that big of a game. I’m not sure if Gameday tries to avoid seeing the same team twice in that short of a time (although they did just follow Texas for their last two slugfests).
It usually seems
that they try to not see the same team twice too close together (and try not to go to the same stadium twice like that), but I think their bigger factor is going to the best/biggest (or most compelling) matchup of the weekend, which is usually any matchup of top-5 or top-10 teams. I have a hard time believing that they woulnd’t come to Happy Valley ONCE during a National Championship run, and by the time that game is played, if we’re still undefeated, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them there (also considering that as of right now the only other “good” matchup of that weekend is Texas Tech @ Oklahoma).
by The JuggerNitt on Oct 20, 2008 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions
It's all about compelling matchups and storylines
They’ve already seen Bama twice, Auburn twice, Texas twice, and now (yes, they’ll be in Columbus this weekend) Ohio State twice, so to say they dont see the same team twice or twice in a short time frame is wrong. They won’t have too much of a “JoePa in his last game” storyline in the final week because Joe will refuse to talk about it or hint towards a decision, but if Penn State is still undefeated and MSU doesn’t implode into nothingness in the next couple of weeks then you bet your ass they’ll be in Happy Valley for that game. It’ll be the last time PSU plays and there’ll be two more weeks to visit other schools still in the BCS scene.
