I Hate The Media & Home-cooking
Ok I'm out of my mind estatic for this PSU team for the big W last night. I noticed some things last night that really bothered me though...
1. Did anyone notice some blown calls last night? How about the roughing the kicker no call? Boone got tackled to the ground and there was no call! Also what about the no holding calls? I swear I saw at least two plays where Maybin and team were totally held and there was no call. WTF. At least this team rose above the home-cooking that was blatant last night.
2. The media. I'm sure everyone could go on and on about this but come on. The one thing that really bothered me last night was the interview of Pat Devlin at the end of the game. Did anyone see this? The reporter instead of congratulating Pat Devlin for carrying the Lions to victory and the game winning drive(s), asked how Darryl Clark is doing. I'm just glad he had a fantastic response and gave it right back to her and was completely humble and modest. And what about Kirk calling the game?! I love Herbstreit and I think he is one of the best but come on, they need to get someone else out there for the game. When the guy comes out with his kids all dressed in Buckeye gear during College Gameday, there is going to be obvious bias.
I sound like sour grapes right now, but I just had to get these things off my chest. Congrats PSU!!!!!!

yes
you are sour grapes. Kirk did an awesome job calling the game with no bias and it wan’t roughing the kicker because Boone ran into him with his follow through. The holding there was some, but that is just Big Ten football and it has to do with if you are engaged before they guy gets past you. Otherwise, if a guy did a spin move, you wouldn’t be able to touch him except when he was facing you. A great example of what I am talking about is the Doug Flutie hail mary play where Miami fans for years have been screaming for holding/block in back on BC’s lineman on the guy who almost got Flutie but it wasn’t a penalty because he was engaged in the front first.

Actually follow through or not it is roughing the kicker...
you cannot make contact with the kicker unless you make contact with the ball, or he has procedded to replace his kicking foot on the ground. If he is in the prone position, which means kicking leg in the air and gets contacted it is either running into the kicker, or roughing…

Also
The refs made every right call on reviews and on the inbound/out of bounds clock running stuff all night. They also nailed the Robiskie catch without the need of replay. I thought it was actually a really well referred game.

It was a surprisingly well done game, really
I mean, if you want bad officiating, look at the touchdown UM got against MSU thanks to a pylon.
John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

that game
had the absolute worst call I’ve seen this year — maybe ever.
the receiver goes up for the catch, comes down with the ball, and the ball literally falls out of his hands and clearly lands on the ground where he quickly scoops it up.
they reviewed it and it was confirmed as a catch. that was absolutely unbelievable.

Officiating
I was at the game, so couldn’t see it on TV. I know I have your sympathy.
That being said, from an eyewitness observer’s standpoint, the game was very well called. I like that both teams were allowed to actually play the game. Sitting with a group of OSU fans, there was very little grumbling about a poorly called game from their side as well. Unless a blatant offense happened, the refs let the players play the game. I think that regardless of the win, people watching this game will agree it was one of the best pure football games in a long time. And, as quick as most people are to jump on the refs (myself included), they called a pretty damn good game.

same here
I was at the game, and did enjoy that they let them play, unless it was something blatant. I do feel they missed a few blatant calls (on both sides, so at least it evened out), but I might not have had the best view from up in 6C ;-)

seats.
I was stuck in “D” deck. Apparently a lot of the Ohio State fans didn’t even know there was a “D” deck. It was the very top row of the entire stadium.
So, my vantage point wasn’t excellent either. For example, I yelled at one point “Nice catch, D-will,” only to be informed that Butler, not Williams, made the catch.

did anyone see (or participate in)
the S-zone that was brought into the ‘Shoe? I didn’t notice it until after the game, but a few rows behind me there were a bunch of people in blue or white t-shirts with “S-zone in the shoe” shirts on, and I can only assume they were actually seated in an S.
Was this visible at all to anyone?

From our seats across the field, there was a group of people seated in an S. It didn’t look too bad.

ya, I posted a link of it in the "fanshots" section
it looks pretty crisp in the picture, too. Nice job by whoever organized it!

It Was Fine
Lisa Salters is the woman who interviewed Devlin. She is a PSU grad. As far as asking about Clark, its her job. Shes not there to pat (no pun intended) Devlin on the back, shes there to find the answer to the question we all wanted answered.
Herby was great as well last night. Its important to keep in mind that it is not his job to be objective. Hes the color commentator. Hes the newspaper equivalent of a columnist. The person whose opinion you don’t want is Musberger who just talks waaay to much.

Herbstreit always shows PSU respect
which is more than you can say for many of the jokers they put out there.
He’s one of my favorites actually.

Refs
We had 1 penalty called against us all night (which was declined). Doesn’t seem like home cooking to me. I agree there seemed to be a lot of holding, but I’m guessing we probably did our fair share too.
Just enjoy it for what it was.

Holding
I recall a run by Royster where there was clear (to me) holding on the play as well, so yeah, we might have dodged some calls as well. It was well refereed though.
