Yet another moron sportswriter
Some idiot out of Detroit is once again making an idiot of himself by flinging the "Penn State's schedule sucks!" thing around. He's even making things worse for himself by beating the "Coastal Carolina" drum again.
Listen, Bob. Did you even bother to check Penn State's out of conference schedule? I doubt it, considering you only listed Temple and Coastal Carolina. Temple's kindof interesting, of course. Because Temple happens to probably be just about as good as Alabama's best out of conference win, Clemson.
Of course, you didn't bother to list Oregon State. No one ever does anymore, even though Oregon State is a far better team than any of the teams on Alabama's schedule, and certainly mind-blowingly better than every out-of-conference team on Texas Tech's schedule.
And then, of course, he absolutely didn't bother to check the schedule strength on any of the statistical rankings, where he would've found that Penn State's schedule compares pretty favorably to Alabama's, and depending on how the rest of the year goes, could end up being better.
Nah. Every year there has to be some patsy trying to go undefeated due to "weak scheduling," even though we didn't schedule weak, and no one's even talking about the teams who are the paper tigers: Ball State, Utah, and Boise State.
Aren't you glad these guys don't actually contribute to the national championship anymore? Good riddance, AP poll.
Edit: And here's another crazy thought, this time embedded in an otherwise-sane article. The article's talking about the Georgia/Florida game, and noting what their resume will be if they run the table: "Beat a possibly undefeated and likely still wobbly Alabama team for the SEC title and the winner will have two wins over teams like to finish the season in the top-10."
You know what else Georgia and Florida will have? A loss. Florida's will be a loss to Ole Miss, which I cannot, for the life of me, understand how people could excuse. Georgia would at least have some semblance of an argument, but an earlier loss to Alabama should pretty much cancel out a victory over Alabama, leaving them with a resume that'll likely be slightly weaker than Penn State's.
Florida just still makes me go "wha?" When someone says "well, they will have beaten two Top 10 teams!" and then forgets that they weren't able to beat all of the cupcakes on their schedule, that's just... insane. If a victory over a good team is more important than a victory over a bad team, a loss to a bad team has to be more important than a loss to a good team.

Talk about Black Friday
Today’s “PSU is Overrated” articles are flat out nasty. Here’s another:
http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/27466334/
Fuel for Penn State’s fire. I love it. All of it.
That MSNBC guy...you know that guy too?
He actually managed to list OK state (lost last week to Texas), Texas Tech (will probably lose this week to Texas), and even Missouri (lost BIG to Texas) as teams that are more deserving of the national championship game. It seems not just going undefeated, but losing to a team that goes undefeated is good enough for this dude.
I'm too country for Terrelle Pryor.
A bit of the mob mentality...
It’s halloween.. and that’s enough excuse to take the occasion to once again bring up conferences and superiority. Without taking facts into account, fromt he safety of his keyboard typing away. He deserves to be harassed by creepy halloween clowns. You know, the kind with pointy teeth.

Sarcasm
Any one else think that the guy from Detroit was being tongue-in-cheek?
Kindof, but that doesn't make him not a moron
Stupid sarcasm, especially when he could’ve used decent sarcasm, makes you still a moron.
Instead of the “As long as no one checks Penn State’s schedule” crack, a much better one would’ve been something like.
“Thankfully for Penn State, the Big Ten tabled the decision to exile Michigan and replace them with a stronger opponent, such as, oh, anyone from the MAC, and so the Nittany Lions…” etc.
Attacking our non-conference schedule, which is probably the strongest of all of the undefeateds, is just stupid. If he had attacked our conference schedule, I would’ve been like “jeez, don’t exaggerate” but he wouldn’t’ve looked like an idiot.

Wow
I won’t let myself get too upset about this one, because this guy is even less credible than the last.
As long as no one checks Penn State’s schedule — Coastal Carolina, Temple, Bi-Coastal Carolina, Michigan, Southcentral Coastal Carolina — the Nittany Lions have a shot at sending Joe Paterno out the right way.
Huh? At least use the ridiculous stats the other haters are using instead of laughable sarcasm.
Ohio State lost the past two by a combined score of 174-6. I’m just saying, if you’re choosing between a 9-4 Texas and a 12-0 Penn State, that’s a toughie.
If this doesn’t scream “douche”, I don’t know what does. Better yet, he’s a Sparty backer. FAIL.
I am standing on firm ground
Not sure about other Eriks out there…

I'm fighting the urge to email him
I know however that it would only make him feel relevant so I won’t. I bet this piece was his crowning achievement.
Utah's win over Oregon State
Puts a bit of a snag in the paper tiger argument.
Also, you forgot Tulsa.
A win over Oregon State doesn’t make Utah not a paper tiger. Oregon State’s their best victory. Ours is Ohio State. While Oregon State’s a decent team, they’re not Ohio State.

Pardon my french, but fuck all of these assclowns. They write this drivel to prove how “edgy” and “smart” they are. Things like logic & fact get in the way of sensationalism, so they choose not to use these in their articles.
Here’s an article for you:
Want to play for the national championship? Don’t lose. I will repeat this more slowly. Do…Not… LOSE. Don’t lose to shitty SEC teams like Ole Miss AT HOME. Don’t lose to Oregon State, anywhere. Don’t get behind Alabama by 31 points AT HOME. Don’t do any of these things, and congrats – you earned the right to play for the title.
Here’s another one: Don’t crown the fucking national champ with 6 weeks left in the season. Stop worrying about meaningless games played in the past. I mean, we beat Georgia in ’82, so why should the SEC get another shot at the title? Stop jockeying for your home team, piling on a conference rival, or try to further your agenda by trying to “decide” this nonsense now.

Well Stated!
How many articles are out there like this one…yeah, many. IF we make it (win out) + go to the title game AND win; I want to put together a collection of these types of articles WITH THE WRITERS PICTURE RIGHT @ THE TOP OF THE ARTICLE and SEND a collection of the fine BSD’s retorts below them all and LET THEM EAT THEIR WORDS (looking @ the picture of themselves) and WE, the PROUD PSU FAN can sit back and say…“how ’bout a rebuttal…”
I’m all “Silky Johnson” on this type of crap!

Wow
that was a breath of fresh air. There is no sense getting worked up over all of this with a month left in the season. There will be PLENTY of time to argue conference supremacy and everything else once the regular season is over with and the month, month and 1/2 wait for the BCS bowls starts. Until then let us just sit back and enjoy the ride and let the mud be slung around amongst the writers.
The thing is
our schedule simply isn’t as tough as the SEC or Big 12 teams. Therefore, we are definitely gonna get a lot of crap for it. If Texas and Bama both go undefeated & win their conference title games, then they deserve it. There is just no logic that can put us ahead of either one to go to Miami.
As for all the writers saying this or that 1 loss team is better than PSU, well the only thing we can do is win our last 3, hope for a loss from Texas or Bama, and prove them all wrong in the National Championship game.
From now until Jan 8th, there will be those that say we don’t belong. Yes, Ohio State is to thank for most of it. But when have you ever known Penn State to be given their due by the national media? We need some luck, but then we have to take care of business.
Read the second In Defense of Statistics
There is just no logic that can put us ahead of either one to go to Miami.
No. The SEC does not have this fantastic out-of-conference schedule with all sorts of victories over other conferences or anything. Why does everyone keep thinking that victories over teams like LSU, Auburn, etc. are impressive?
Suppose Florida beats Georgia, Georgia Tech beats Georgia, and Florida State beats Florida. Now consider-
Georgia: Georgia will have three losses, and their best win will be over who? Central Michigan? Purdue beat Central Michigan. LSU? LSU barely beat Auburn! Georgia’s resume will be about as good as Michigan State’s, and certainly worse than Ohio State’s. You’d rank them somewhere between 15-20 if you were fair.
Florida: Florida will also have three losses, one of them to Ole Miss. Their best victory will be over Georgia, which will be a mid-Top 25 team. It’s unlikely that any of their other victories will end up being over a Top 25 team, with the possible exception of LSU. Still, Ohio State will have a victory over Minnesota (who will probably finish in the Top 25), and a victory over Michigan State (ditto), which probably means that Florida would be ranked best somewhere around 8-10 or so.
Now please, please explain how Penn State’s schedule, which could easily end up with us having games against three teams in the top 25 if Oregon State continues to do well, is so much weaker than Alabama’s, who would then finish with two victories over teams in the Top 25?
Part of the insanity right now with regards to Penn State is the fact that sportswriters want to crown the SEC as the best conference again, and they’re not. LSU is the biggest example of the SEC bias: LSU has a 7-point victory over one team with a winning record, and all the others are against teams that are 4-4 or worse, including two 0-8 teams, plus two multi-touchdown losses. And yet they’re in the middle of the Top 25! Are you kidding me? Michigan State has a waaay better resume (and they’ve only got one multi-touchdown loss) and they’re below them.
Alabama’s entire schedule strength rests on the idea that Georgia, Florida, and LSU are good. LSU absolutely does not deserve to be at #15, and Georgia and Florida haven’t proven themselves at all yet.

Ok
But what if Georgia runs the table to the SEC title game, and Florida winds up with 2 losses after they beat FSU, who would also only have 2 losses? Then if Alabama beat Georgia in the SEC title game, it would look impressive.
I’m not sold on either Texas Tech or Okla St being ranked as high as they have been. Oklahoma is obviously good but Stoops seems to have a problem coaching in big games. That said, those three teams can probably be put ahead of Ohio State and Michigan State. Sparty’s best win? At home vs the Irish or at Northwestern. The Buckeye’s? Definitely the thrashing of MSU, with their 3 point win at a floundering Wisc being 2nd best. So you see, our opponents’ wins and so forth just aren’t that impressive. Of course, non of this is to say that I don’t believe in Ohio State of MSU. I think they are both very good top 15 teams, its just that their resume doesn’t show
I’m not trying to be a Debbie Downer, just trying to put things in perspective realistically. Hell, I’ve already started planning a trip to Florida in January. But the simple fact is that we’ve got some work left to do and we need a little help. I do think we are capable of beating anyone in the country.
Those stories
rile me up like nothing else…but then i read this story and it made me feel better. for every naysayer, there’s one that believes in our beloved lions. people do realize that the big12 has no defense (which should make everyone question the validity of their offense). and i think, i’m about to put this quote where i can see it every day…
On the other hand, underestimate the Nittany Lions at your own peril. Four times in his career Paterno has led his team to an undefeated season and been denied the national title. A fifth time, in 1986, Penn State was allowed, grudgingly, to face Miami in what everyone involved was sure would be a gruesome mismatch. Then a 20-year-old fan of the game, I was lucky enough to be in the stands for the 1987 Fiesta Bowl. And I watched as the Nittany Lions forced the Hurricanes and their Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Vinny Testaverde, out of the highly caffeinated game that they’d hoped to play. Penn State won the national championship with a 14-10 victory.
If that score does not scare Big 12 offensive coordinators, it should. And by the way, this Nittany Lion offense is far superior to that one.
i really think all the coaches should save all of these stories written by these morons and save them. save them for we hopefully make it to the MNC. then the coaches can use it has fuel…
as deon butler would say…
“We are not normal…We are legends…We are PENN STATE!”
Off the subject a little
But anyone else notice the referee pointing the wrong way in reference to Sargeants int in the NBC story? Now thats a call to have legitimate gripe about.
I emailed Brian Burwell..
Subject: Congratulations
Mr. Burwell,
I have to say I’m impressed. For someone with your clear lack of intelligence and creativity to have made as far as you have in the sportswriting business is truly admirable. Case in point, your latest piece on Penn State.
For starters, you are about the 10th writer I’ve seen write this exact same article this week. So, well done on having zero creativity. You used the same tired arguments that Penn State doesn’t deserve to be in the title game because Ohio State got embarassed the last two years. Great logic buddy! Pssst….Penn State is not Ohio State. Then you go on about the Penn State-Ohio State game being so boring and hard to watch. Maybe you were a fan of the 17-10 offensive masterpiece that was the USC-Arizona game? Or maybe the 14-7 Georgia-South Carolina game? No, you’re right-it’s only the Big Ten that’s involved in games like that. No need to notice that both teams played tremendous defense that night either.
Another strong point of yours-USC crushed Ohio State and Penn State played them close. So USC must be better than Penn State, right? Nevermind the fact that Penn State crushed Oregon State, who beat USC. Nah, no need to mention that.
One thing I’d really like to know is why you Big 10 haters fail to mention the choke jobs by Oklahoma in its last two BCS games. Why does the same reasoning that you apply to Ohio State not fit for the Big 12?
And guess what? Penn State would be 12-0, not 11-0.
So let’s recap all you’ve accomplished with you piece on Penn State:
-you failed to display any creativity both in the subject of your piece as well as the arguments to support your cause
-you conveniently left out important pieces of information so that your argument could appear sound
-you got your facts wrong
So, congratulations Mr. Burwell. I don’t know how you did it, but you were able to write at a third grade level and get your work put on nbc.com.
Oklahoma
is my favorite rebuttal argument. They have lost 4 straight BCS bowls, including back-to-back national championship games, and to Boise St and West Virginia. Yet, lots of love. What a double-standard.
Yep, 4 in a row
Their last BCS win was the nat’l title in 2000. 0-4 since then. More so, Ohio State has won a national title (2002) and won a Fiesta Bowl. The majority of the media cannot be taken seriously.
I Doubt He'll Respond
I don’t see how he can read that e-mail, if he even reads his e-mail at all, and not feel embarrassed. I’ve wondered myself how the hell some of these people get the sports journalism jobs they do, and I’m starting to think they write crazy stuff on purpose just to get a lot of hits/linkbacks and comments.
I’m a Michigan fan, but I just wrote something on PSU getting screwed in the BCS polls that should be published in the morning (Nov. 3) on several sites including the site I wrote it for, www.ingamenow.com. If you go to the blog and click on NCAAFB, it ought to be there. I think that e-mail to Burwell was better, though. That’s really good stuff about Oklahoma.
