1994 CO-National Champions
I came across this article a while ago and I meant to post this. The link is:
http://cfn.scout.com/2/793526.html
Pete Fiutak was "analyzing" what would happen if the almighty SEC champion would have played for the MNC despite its record. All was well and good until I read this.
1994 – Nebraska over Miami, and Penn State over Oregon
SEC Champion: Florida … No vs. Nebraska or Penn State, who were named co-national champions
If my memory serves, we were not awarded the share of the prize, were we? Even if we weren't I wanted everyone on here to e-mail him about his mistake and let him have it, or not, either way....

I don't think I'll email him
I kinda like Fiutak. And he seems more aggressive than me, so there’s a fair chance I could get my ass kicked.

1994 New York Times Computer Poll Champions!
I remember when that gem was plastered on the side of the stadium.

Clearly, the NYT computer was right, though.
I’ll take it.

When I go to the grave
My tombstone will read “Penn State: 1994 National Champions”. Damn you midwestern voters! Damn you!

I think you put the quote marks in the wrong spot
It should be:

As far as I am concerned
I like the cut of his jib. The more we start seeing “Penn State was co-national champion in 1994” the more people will believe it happened…and now that it is 14 years after the fact, that’s all we need. I believe we were named co-MNC

Lets
Never mention ‘94 again, that is until we go undefeated this year and a 1 loss SEC team plays a Pac 10 team for the MNC. Just kidding, I know, I know, don’t get ahead of ourselves.

In the state of Pennsylvania...
…PSU is the official NCAA 1-A champion in 1994. The state legislation passed a bill at the time that said such.

As far as I'm concerned
Everyone recognizes that Penn State was the best team in the country that year. You still hear reporters talking about how great that team was. But you never hear anyone talk about the great Nebraska team of 1994. And whenever they mention “Nebraska 1994 National Champions” they always follow it up by mentioning many people felt we deserved it more. As far as I’m concerned, Nebraska’s championship has a major asterisk.

Even the Nebraska fans know its bullshit
I’ve never met one who wouldn’t admit that the title should have been split.
As good as Nebraska was during that period of time, they did not need the pity that gave that title to them. They are smart enough to know that pity for Tom Osborne (and a bit of jealousy amongst our Big Ten brethren) is the only reason they won the vote.

exactly....
the asterix stands for : award for career achievement in the conference formerly known as the Big 8. recipient : Tom Osborne. Damn him and Rashaan Salaam. The new Big 12 stole all our thunder that year. But as Nietzche and Conan are want to say : “that which does not kill us, makes us stronger”.

1997
We didn’t get a share in 94, and they got a share that they didn’t deserve in 97 with Michigan. That is the year they won that game against Mizzou when the receiver kicked it to another receiver for a game-winning TD at the end of regulation. What a joke. Osborne must have been paying the other coaches off or something like that. In 94, though, Miami should have beat Nebraska. If it wasn’t for their receivers coming up with the dropsies on 3rd down and Sapp dancing too much and wearing himself out, we would have had #3 that we deserved.

1994
We WERE named the NY Times National Champion via their computer rankings at the time. The signage they used to have hanging outside the south end zone used to trumpet this fact.
The thing that cost us, I still believe, was the 65 yard TD pass Kordell threw to beat Michigan. This meant we went to Ann Arbor and beat a one-loss Michigan team which was less impressive than beating an undefeated UM. The IU margin didn’t help either…
My favorite moment from that year was in the 4thQ against MichSt. We were already up huge and KJ Carter re-entered the game and scored on a 50+ yd run. Found out later that Gantner let KJC pick any play to run. He chose wisely.
That offense was second to none. They recently showed the 1994 Illinois game on the BTN. That drive still generates arousal…
