Bye Week Open Thread

Even though Penn State is off today I thought you all might appreciate a thread to discuss the games. Here are some national games of interest.
Arkansas State @ No 2. Alabama - 3:00 PM on ESPN 360 and ESPN Gameplan
No. 8 Florida @ No. 6 Georgia - 3:30 PM on CBS
No. 1 Texas @ No. 7 Texas Tech - 8:00 PM on ABC
I don't think I have to explain the implications of these games to you guys. Enjoy a stress free day of just watching football.

Best Gameday Sign so far?
Haven’t seen many that good, but “Is this the line for Jonas Brothers tickets?” made me laugh.
John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

I’m glad Herby called him out for not mentioning Oregon State when talking about our OOC schedule.

Did you know?
Did you know that the Oregon St. team that PSU played and the Oregon St. team that USC played are not the same team?
There’s actually two Oregon State teams — the terrible aweful shameful highschool team PSU played and the respectable up-and-coming program USC played.
I for one, was surprised to learn this, but I assure you the pundits and analysts have set us straight.
Also, for the record playing Ohio St. at home is a gutsy, tough win. Playing Ohio State on the road in Columbus is a cake-walk and not really a big deal if you win.

Indiana........
we are goign to hang 60 on this defense. They are horrible. But remember…….Florida beating Kentucky 63 – 5 will be more impressive because Kentucky had two years where they had a good QB so they will be looked at differently even though they are almost if not just as bad as Indiana.

Lots of teams beat #1 teams. There have been a handful of #1's so far this year.
While Texas is good and I’ll admit it just as much as anyone else is, Texas Tech is not a #1 caliber team. They win by simply slinging the ball and hoping they have more points than the other team when there are zeros on the clock. Thats not a #1 team.

I’m not really worried about Texas Tech. I don’t think they can run that schedule undefeated. Actually, I think their dream season ends tonight. But I hope I’m wrong.

Bielema
Talk about a falling star! The past two years I had been so impressed with their program, the successful transition plan. The young, aggressive coach of the future. Now here we are in year three, mostly his players (more fat, white, unathletic cheeseheads on the oline trench, no quarterback to speak of), and he’s shown his charisma (pitino-esque, no hesitation to throw a player under the bus) and who would want to play for him? And top it off with a heavily penalized squad with a heavy dose of lack of discipline.
Wow, never thought I’d be so glad to have our offensive coaching staff than theirs. What a freakin tool.
pax et amor
by jtothep on Nov 1, 2008 3:51 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Don't forget
He and his coaching staff got a 20 yard penalty for sideline infraction which resulting in them freaking out and getting a 15 yard unsportsman like. The drive resulted in a TD for MSU — huge huge turn of events.
I can’t wait to see the press-conference transcript to see how he pins that on someone other than himself.
Bielema is a classless douche bag who deserves to lose his job this season. I will never forget him cheating and taking advantage of that loophole in the rules years ago.

Wow
I hadn’t caught that; thanks for the notes.
I’ll never forget that loophole exploitation either. But I didn’t consider that cheating, millzners. It was that kinda shit that had me thinking he was a savvy coach worthy of appreciation and respect. This year’s turn of events show otherwise.

The SEC hype never ceases to mystify. I have absolutely no idea how a two-loss team like LSU is ranked at all, considering that they’ve given up 50+ in two straight games and there signature win is against Auburn.
Honestly, the only thing more boring than this game is Pitt-ND. Didn’t RUTGERS put up 54 on Pitt last week? Talk about stone-age offense right there.

I'm very encouraged by the Ark St/Bama first half
Not that I think there’s more than 1% chance of an upset, but its only 14-0 at halftime, and Bama has been an atrocious 2nd half team this year. One of the tds was a pick 6. The Alabama Crimson Tide Suck.

That could
perhaps help us close the gap in the BCS / human polls. With LSU and Auburn struggling, their SOS doesnt look great anymore (Aside from SEC championship).
by psdeuce on Nov 1, 2008 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Definitely
Their SOS is getting abused, will go down today win or lose, and for the 4th time this year they look like crap.
Tulane, W 20-6, ZERO offensive touchdowns, 172 yds of offense
Kentucky W 17-14, ONE offensive touchdown, JP Wilson 7-17, 106, 1 int
Mississippi, W 24-20, lost the 2nd half 17-0
The first half against Georgia was the perfect storm of everything going right for Bama and everything going wrong for Georgia. Not to discredit that, as it was impressive. But that was an anamoly, the real Bama is an above average at best SEC team with a shaky offense and tons of weaknesses.

Georgia = FAILURE
Well, at least that’s one team that won’t need to be in the discussion for the BCS title.
Unfortunately, because Georgia is allegedly OMG SO FREAKING GOOD we should soon see another round of 1-loss UF team belongs in the title game because OMG THE SEC IS SO AMAZINGLY AMAZING!
by Tailgate Shogun on Nov 1, 2008 5:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
On another board
I read a poster listing his reasoning for how Georgia would get back into the NC game.
The cornerstone of his reasoning was that preseason polls are ‘the most accurate because they are a pure judge of talent and don’t rely on statistics or games’.
Georgia fans, like most SEC fans, have a really loose grasp on reality…

if tech wins who’s you #1,2,3?
by hawaiipennstatefan on Nov 1, 2008 10:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Here is my thinking
PSU #1
Alabama #2 – The Georgia win is looking less impressive after today. They have struggled against some lousy teams.
Tech #3 – If they keep winning I may have to move them up.

I don’t agree with going for two there. There is still a whole quarter of football to go. Get the one point. Then a TD and FG gives you the lead. Now you need a TD and FG just to tie. Don’t agree with going for two there.

Here is the conundrum
Nobody is going to want to drop Oklahoma after they destroyed Nebraska tonight. So they have to at least stay at #4. But you can’t drop Texas below them b/c Texas beat Oklahoma. So Texas can’t drop below #3. But you now have to put Tech in the top two, but Alabama and PSU are already there.
My guess is Tech will jump to #3, Oklahoma will stay at #4, and Texas will come in at #5. But realistically Oklahoma should drop along with Texas after tonight.

Sweet Defense
Is it just me or should the number 1 ranked team not be giving up all these yards? There is always someone wide open on every play. The Big 12 just doesn’t have any sort of defense that could stop a championship-caliber team. If we get jumped by TTU there are major issues in this sport.
by TheGunslinger on Nov 1, 2008 11:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
you don't seem to understand
If you are from the Big 12 you can be #1 without having a defense. In The SEC you can be #1 without having an offense. In the Big 10, you can have both, but you are then overrated, and from an inferior conference

and the other was the Texas Oklahoma game. Are all the games/defenses this bad? I mean with Penn State’s defense on the field I feel confident that we won’t get blown up, and that we can do something good. With these 2 defenses on the field I just wonder which player is gonna get burned for the big play.

Mark May and Lou Holtz "debating" if tech should jump to #1/2
Mark May is a douche. First off, using the precident of Texas jumping to #1 after beating Oklahoma as a reason for Texas Tech to jump up.
Um…how’d that work out for everybody? If Texas really deserved that jump, then perhaps we should just keep them #1 after this loss. One of the biggest problems with these polls is that we base all the rankings on whether they beat teams that were ranked in previous rankings…but if we are changing those rankings with updated information, then they obviously were incorrect, error filled rankings, and shouldn’t be used in the new evaluation. Crystal Ball. . .
. . .because we do this on bye weeks:
Tomorrow’s BCS Rankings: 1Bama, 2Tech, 3PSU
All 3 take care of business next two weekends, then. . .
Nov. 22. Gameday in Happy Valley to see PSU over MSU. Near the end of the game, they announce the TTU vs. OU score. OU wins, let the mayhem begin.
How do you like that end to the regular season?
That being said, all eyes on Iowa City.

wow
that scenario makes me want to make a road trip to HV for MSU. What I night that would be if that’s how it went down.

Remember all those 'PSU Doesn't Deserve" Articles this week?
Sucks that all those writers have to republish this week and put the word “Tech” in their articles. Keep it coming.

Yeah
I am actually cheering for bama to win out and Tech to lose to OK State but beat OU

Defense..........
doesn’t excite the masses therefore, it doesn’t matter as much as putting up 50 points every week. If we get jumped this week, its because we only put 13 on OSU. Had we put 24 on them, I don’t think we get jumped. But, we’ll see. Paterno has been a proponent of a playoff system. Unfortunately, it would be yet another piece of his legacy if his final team went 12-0, he misses out on a chance for a National Title for the 5th time when undefeated, and that ends up being the reason that the powers that be really begin the talks in earnest about a playoff that eventually is adopted.

The thing that fucking infuriates me is how did Tech
get wedged in between us and Bama??!? While I don’t agree with it, if Tech would have shot to the top, there at least would have been a precedent (Texas jumping to # 1 after beating the Gooners, I mean Sooners). But how do they wedge them in? Bias, because of the Fuckeyes getting blown out the last two games.

Don't worry........
TT is not going to win out and Bama is going to get completely exposed in the SEC Champ. game.
Florida will beat bama by 4 Touchdowns and then we can all sit back and ask the asshole media who was more over-rated this year – Bama, UGA, LSU, or Auburn.

I Feel Sorry.......
For Iowa, Indiana, and MSU……..we were going to pulverize them to begin with…….but if getting snubbed like this in the polls doesn’t completely focus this club to win each of their last 3 games by at least 5 TDs I don’t know what would.
Coaching staff………..the country thinks the Big 10 is a complete blow job………you must destroy the remaining opponents otherwise you will be watching somebody else hoisting the crystal.
