Nitt Picks Is All Business

Do you mind if we dance with your dates? ESPN is apparently trying to steal one of FOX's premiere sports tickets: the BCS bowl game broadcasts.

The BCS is considering a proposal from ESPN that would see all BCS bowl games, including the championship game, wind up on ESPN, sources familiar with the negotiations are saying.

[...]

If ABC/ESPN ultimately wins the bid and moves even one BCS game to ESPN, it would trigger a clause in its Rose Bowl contract that would allow it to immediately take the annual game in Pasadena from its home of 21 years on ABC to the cable channel.

Moving the game from ABC to ESPN wouldn't actually change anything, as Happy Hour Valley points out, because just about all of the TV watching households in this country already get the cable channel.  This is the direction things are moving anyway...gone are the days where a program not on a bunny-ears channel doesn't get watched.  This also represents a huge deal for the BCS, they are looking at increasing their revenue by 50% from TV contracts alone.  The BCS knows not of this recession you talk about.

While I agree with just about everyone, that FOX has a long way to go in their college football coverage, I'm concerned about one player holding all of the cards.  ESPN already is by far the biggest college football platform. Writers and coaches, who make up two thirds of the BCS, rarely get to pay attention to more than one or two games on Saturday.  Where do you think they catch up on the ones they missed?

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but I don't think it's unimaginable for the ESPN bosses, who have a direct interest in BCS ratings to the tune of millions of dollars, to feel a little pressure to make the big market teams look better in their "news" coverage.

Hindsight is 20/20 (and what is with the Wildcat?). Jeff McLane pulled some quotes together about the Penn State game prep for Iowa, and the direction the coaches decided to move in after it became clear that Clark was no where near 100%.

He said [Clark] sitting out the Iowa game never was discussed. Still, the coaches added a "Wildcat" formation - wide receiver Derrick Williams took a direct snap as Clark split wide - so Clark avoided unnecessary hits. The Wildcat also was in the game plan in case Devlin, who isn't as mobile, had to replace Clark.

I thought the plays to Williams were both interesting and effective, but I didn't catch on to the fact that they were an attempt at protecting Clark.  If he wasn't physically ready enough to take a couple of hits, I have to wonder if playing him wasn't a mistake.  I also think that Devlin is relatively mobile; what you lose is the physical, aggressive running style. However, if Clark isn't available for that type of play, and he is still feeling the effects of a concussion that forced him to sit out a lot of practice, why not play the OSU tested Devlin?  I don't even really want an answer, I'm moving on, but being too hesitant to make necessary changes seems to be a common theme with this coaching staff.

Also, more signs that Paterno is starting to feel the strain of the season.

"Saturday night was a tough night for me," said coach Joe Paterno, who has been hobbled by a leg injury. "There's no sense in kidding you about that. Football games are tough these days on me. And then you get home and you play the game 10 times in your head. That's tough. You don't get any sleep Saturday nights."

To be fair, though, there are probably a lot of coaches in their 30's that would lose sleep after suffering a loss like this one.

Big Ten speed. The conference soccer tournament starts this week, finally putting an end to all of these Big Ten teams beating up on each other.

This year’s bracket looks to be very competitive as it is loaded with talent.  Four Big Ten student-athletes have earned National Player of the Week honors this season, tied for most out of all conferences.  Also, four Big Ten squads rank in the RPI’s top-15, most among all conferences.

Seriously, though: I'm tired of these other schools getting a free pass into the national tournament by beating up on cupcakes and then breezing through their terrible conferences.

As we mentioned last week, Penn State, with very strong play from Warren Gross, might be peaking at the right time.  Penn State starts tournament play tomorrow at 10:30am against Northwestern.

They're out for your blood. The Challenge is on:

The 15th annual Penn State and Michigan State Blood Donor Challenge begins Nov. 3, and Penn State will try to hold on to its two-year winning streak against Michigan State.

[...]

If Penn State wins this year it will be its 10th victory in the 15 years the two schools have been competing.

I'm consistently blown away at how successful this thing has become.  And it continues to gain in productivity: last year was the first time a school broke the 2,000-unit barrier (Penn State, of course, 2,170).

Wildcat Formation

That was my guess to its use. You have a QB that can run, so why not use him…unless you want to get DWill some touches (part of the reason), keep defense guessing (small part), or keep your QB from getting hit (main reason).

Directly after that game I was frustrated with the coaches…you knew he wasn’t 100% (as dictated by the gameplanning of the Wildcat), so why not use Devlin at some point?

one point on these "interesting" plays

They never seem to mix them up. Remember the Oregon v Michigan game? Where they ran the statue and then faked the statue? Whenever we use these different formations, it’s always the exact same option that gets used.

DWill did throw the ball once....

but yes, you’re right….it was like we ran that play one too many times without Dwill handing it off or throwing it.

how many times did the actually stop it?

this isn’t an exact count, but none that I recall.

Why mess with success (which leads me to the whole “where did the HD offense go?” I haven’t analyzed the games play by play, but has anyone figured out if the last 2 games the opposing defenses have just been good at shutting it down, or have we not actually been trying the same playcalling? If we changed our playcalling style significantly, why? Yes we were going against tougher defenses, but why mess with success?

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 12, 2008 12:28 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I think they stopped it twice

both for losses on our last possession right after we got the ball back on the roughing the kicker call.

I have thought about the “make them stop it” mindset as well and I think you’re right, but I also think effective playcalling also requires throwing a few more wrinkles in every now and again. Yes, DWill did throw it once. But that was “A” (as in singular) wrinkle.

When DWill is lined up in the backfield or taking the snap “he’s going to run it” has to be the thing that they’re keying on every time. I’ve said before in other posts, that making him a decoy every now and again would probably be just as effective. Why not use that formation with him taking the snap and having a run/toss option with Royster? Lord knows enough teams have burned us with QB’s running those options.

Yep, I agree

Once the coaches run a “gimmick” play, they don’t seem to “set up” future alterations on that play (i.e. your Oregon example).

The more I think about it

The Spread HD was just a bunch of new formations. It took teams by surprise early in the season, but now they have film on us and can see that we only run two or three plays out of these formations. The defenses have caught up, and our coaches don’t seem to be able to do anything about it.

Every week I see our struggles being explained away by the coaches and players as “Well, they threw some things at us we didn’t see on film.” How come I never see our opponents saying this? Nobody comes away from playing Penn State saying, “Wow, we weren’t expecting them to do that.”

by BSD on Nov 12, 2008 12:02 PM EST   1 recs

Hell, I remember when Iowa was calling our plays out before the snap.

That was a few years ago. At least we’ve progressed a little since then.

by Run Up The Score on Nov 12, 2008 12:07 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I have noticed this trend a bit

And can’t fully explain it. The thing that looked great at the beginning of the year was the possible options on some of the different formations, but we haven’t really seemed to exploit those options (or even use them in some games to give the other coaches something to plan against). There was that one formation that I think Kevn disected, and showed all the possible plays to come out of it, yet we still just seem to do only 2 or 3 plays out of it ever.

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 12, 2008 12:31 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Damnit Mike

cut Jay some slack…his PS2 memory card is already full and he has no room to develop new plays.

You’re right though, the only play that looked different was the Wildcat, and we did that only out of necessity to get some QB runs in there (not to mention we beat it to death, although with some success).

by Screen Name 20 on Nov 12, 2008 12:45 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Yes we telegraphed both the plays we ran in years past.

I detest the fact that Toledo linebackers were shouting the exact spot the ball would be run by our offense in the 2000 game. We weren’t predictable, we were offensively retarded. I wonder how much is defenses now reading the SHD offense for what it is and how much is Joe cutting the SHD out of the offense in critical games He has a history of that and it looks very familiar to see our goal line offense of earlier this decade, or any decade since the 70’s being run time after time after time.

Here's a "wildcat" question

We ran this play in the “dark days” with MRob and Zack Mills and I think we even pulled it out a couple of times with Morelli.

When we do this, I don’t think anyone ever thought we were going to pass to Mills, Morelli or (now) Clark. So what purpose does lining them up at a receiver spot serve? If you’re going to have DWill take a direct snap, why not really make them think about it and sit Clark out for a down, have Williams, Royster and Green out there at the same time and have Royster line up as a receiver. At least you might put something in their head that they have someone lining up out there that they should at least make an effort to cover honestly. Lining up the QB just gives them an extra defender because he’s unlikely someone that you have to worry about covering too closely.

by nitwit86 on Nov 12, 2008 12:56 PM EST   0 recs

the only thing I think they gain with keeping Clark in

is that when we’re in the huddle they won’t automatically know that Williams will be in the backfield, so they won’t necessarily have the defensive substitutions in that they might want. not sure if the benefit gained there is worth playing 10 on 11, though.

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 12, 2008 1:02 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

it is odd to put the QB in at receiver

Put an offensive tackle out at receiver or in the backfield, that would really get the defense worked up. If a tackle lined up at wide receiver you know the entire defense would be watching him, run the other direction. This may be ridiculous but as you said no one respects the QB as receiver.

I don't know, Mello Yello is pretty awful. What's the worst that could happen?

by psu on Nov 12, 2008 1:04 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

FWiW

Mills could actually catch (touchdown!) and block – so his lining up (at least in his early years) wasn’t so transparent.

The “theory” behind the QB being on the field is to: call the play (he’s the one with the wristband); be on the field in case the play goes south making it necessary to change/react; and, basically, as stated above, to lessen the reaction time of the D.

however, it’s the type of play that you run once a year – not every game – and not every drive -

And PSU never executes a play like this quickly or in a clandestine manner – but DW was doing a fairly good job of it – he is, after all, a quarterback at heart.

Hey. Let's not forget about Penn State Men's Basketball!

PSU men’s basketball. We’re so good we’ll face William.

No, no, no… we’re soooo good we’ll face William AND Mary. Together! Beat that, Dookies!

ESPN

Isn’t part of the hangup regarding the BCS keeping its current format the fact that they have to wait until the contract with FOX is up to make any changes? Would ESPN taking over the TV rights make any headway towards a +1 system?

by speedomike on Nov 12, 2008 7:35 PM EST   0 recs

I wouldn't hold my breath

John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

Me neither

ESPN gets bigger ratings when all their talking heads (and all the loyal fanbases) are arguing over who should be ranked 1-2 in the BCS. The more controversy they can gin up, the more $$$ ESPN makes. Which, if they get the contract for the BCS games, is yet one more reason why you can kiss the dream of a playoff goodbye for several more years at least, because they won’t want to lose that controversy or hyped-up drama.

500 million reasons against a playoff

Fox got the current contract because ABC thought the 5 bowl/more access for non-BCS teams format would not be as attractive to fans. The fact that ESPN is willing to pay this much for 4 years of the current system reinforces that the product is worth paying for.

by pjk on Nov 13, 2008 3:26 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

yes they're one happy family but

they are not 1 entity. ABC used to have the BCS bowls, and still has the Rose Bowl. No BCS bowl has ever been on ESPN.

by pjk on Nov 13, 2008 4:06 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

but from a financial standpoint

if the bowl isn’t worth it in the eyes of one, wouldn’t Disney not see it as worth it in the eyes of the other? (obviously I’m not an economics/management/business type of guy)

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 14, 2008 11:42 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

There is no longer an "ABC Sports" independent of ESPN

General details here are accurate

This is ESPN admitting that they were wrong about the value of the current contract. Likely, you’ll see at least the least popular BCS bowl moving to cable. (Wake Forest-Utah will draw a good number for cable, less so for ABC.) I imagine the BCS Champ game will stay on ABC.
