QB for next season
Does everyone think Clark is automatically the starter next season, or do they have another competition before the season? I think even if the coaches have already decided he will be they should have a competition anyway, just to keep them sharp.
I would like to see Devlin get a series in an actual meaningful game where he is allowed to throw the ball. I am not saying I prefer Devlin over Clark though, I just want to see what the kid can do. I'm sure we'll see him some this week, but it would be really intersesting to see him against MSU.

it would've been nice....
to see him in a series or two against Iowa.

I agree. Clark was clearly struggling and putting in Devlin may have spiced things up.

He is automatically the starter for next season
I can see no reason why or how it could go any other way. Let’s not forget that our expectations going into the season were “please be better that AM”, Clark has led this team way past any of those thoughts to being disappointed that we aren’t going to be playing for the MNC. He is the leader that we have been missing since Robinson left.

Definitely.
Also, Morelli started for two entire years so there’s no doubt in my mind that Clark will do the same…our backup could be Peyton Manning and I doubt it would matter.

i hope there is a competition
While Clark has the leadership qualities, I think it is obvious that Devlin has better passing skills. Also, going into the season, the other tangible ability that Clark had that Devlin did not was his running ability. However we really have not utilized this to our advantage. If we arn’t going to run our qb (except for 1 yard dives which anyone could do) and just use the qb to pass, we might as well put in the player with better passing skills.
I love that Clark has leadership, but I still think that a player has to have skill first, then he can develop leadership. Devlin has the skill (at least I think so), but hasn’t had to opportunity to really lead so far. Why not give him a shot?

Something to consider
We may have a new coach next year, and if that person comes from outside the program you can bet that he will have no loyalty to anyone. I expect every position, including the quarterback, will be up for grabs.

new coach
I think this is the second comment in two days that I’ve seen that you’ve mentioned a new coach. Do you really think that the chances joe pa comes back is low?

Just speculation
I mean, the guy is 82 years old. He’s at the point in his life where he probably doesn’t buy green bananas anymore. He has no contract after this season. He can barely walk right now. I think there is a good possibility he won’t be back. But I don’t have any inside information.

Aside from his walking, even when sitting and giving interviews he does not look well
And at 82 you don’t just bounce back from any sort of setback.

word on his hip
is that it’s bone on bone. That would be very painful to walk, which is probably why he looks like he’s in so much pain.

But You Can Recover. . .
And Joe will. We even heard Joe say last week that its “fixable.” I think that baring any setbacks, his current hip injury will not be the sole reason he steps away. That leaves it up to will-to-win and desire to succeed. And if you doubt that at 82, then you’ve doubted it since 60.
Not saying it’s in the bank that he’ll be back, just saying that you need to show me more than a sore hip to convince me that MSU is his last home game ever.

will-to-win, desire to succeed
desire to mentor and teach, and turn boys into men. If those are the only criteria, JoePa will coach from beyond the grave.

If a new coach comes in, he would probably want to go w/ the QB who will be around for an extra year.
Clark is either great or very bad.

Clark
is the starter unless JoePa leaves, at which point, it is an open race. Clark has been fine all year, you can’t let a couple of shaky starters sway that decision. If that is how we ran things, QB #14 wouldn’t have had a job his Senior season.

The JayPa curse is in full swing!
I’m afraid Clark is getting worse, not better, as the season progresses. This has been a trademark of Jay’s pupils, they start off very promising, and it’s all down hill from there.
Mills you can blame on injury, Morelli you can blame on his feeble brain, Robinson only had one year, and now Clark you can blame on the fact that he’s faced the two best defenses we’ve seen all season. But facts and rationality have nothing to do with curses.
What I’m trying to get at, is that despite Clarks amazing start of his first year, history is not kind to returning starters at that position. They tend to play tighter, not looser; they tend to lose whatever spark of greatness they originally had; and they never get pulled during a meaningful game when it really matters.
The biggest problem is the last one.

Clark as the starter
I think what DClark has done in terms of leadership this season has been great. He obviously has some intangibles that are contributing to the teams success. What I haven’t seen, though, is any sort of strong passing ability. Granted, I have not gone back through and rewatched each game, so I am sure there are some throws in there that have been super.
I would like to see a QB competition again next year. It will only strengthen both of them. I don’t want to throw DClark under the bus or anything. My instinct just tells me that I am not comfortable when I see DClark drop back to pass and maybe another round of competition would improve his passing skills.

Too Soon
Let’s worry about this in pre-season next year.
If Clark torches the next two opponents, no one will even be asking this question.

'torches'?
Is he capable of torching?
I’d like to see him start with addressing the single most important aspect of quarterback play: Composure.

Maybe not
All I’m saying is fans are fickle. I’m not predicting what he’ll do. A month ago people were complaining about Clark being left out of the Heisman race. Now people want him benched.
A month from now, what will the consensus be?
by gcdyersb on Nov 13, 2008 5:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Fickle fans
Gotcha. Sort of. I’ll never presume to address consensus.
But the fickle bit rubs a bit. I’m scared to death of sounding (to myself, irrespective of posting in here) like the …I don’t know, traditional grumpy old central pennsylvania ‘fan’ who bitches no matter what, and always calls for the backup qb. So I haven’t bashed him. He’s a good kid and the others seem to respect him.
Instead, I’ll ride it out, suppress my sadness at Devlin’s missed opportunities (from day one this year), and just quibble semantics if I feel Clark’s getting unfairly praised. Also a rather embarrassing approach, but that’s where I’ve found myself after these last two games…

Did anyone else hear
the announcers say Clark has small hands for a QB after he fumbled on the 3rd play? Not only does this increase the chance of fumbling, but would also lead to crappy passes when you can’t feel your hands when its freezing cold.
by whiteoutonly on Nov 13, 2008 12:04 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
so THAT's what they say about people with small hands
I’ve always wondered.
by The JuggerNitt on Nov 13, 2008 12:49 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Small hands
He does have small hands. In the article in the ESPN Magazine (from the point of view of the football) they talk about how Clark likes to use the smaller version of the 2 balls allowed in NCAA Football and also likes to use balls that are not fresh out of the box. he needs them scuffed because he does not have large enough hands to “spin it” when it is slippery out of the box. This would cause some fumbles…
All this talk about the ball reminds me of Tony Sacca and the Phoneix Cardinals when he questioned the size of the ball they used in Arizona.

Its Clark either way...
Let’s not go into panic mode over DC’s performance the last two games.
The defenses are getting tougher, the HD isn’t the big unknown it once was, and the weather was a factor. Not to mention Ohio State and Iowa are two of the better defenses in the league, maybe the best.
The man had a concussion two weeks ago, and showed signs of hesitation on Saturday.
Its going to be Clark in 2009, new coach or not. The last thing a new coach at Penn State is going to do is anything controversial or crazy. We’re not talking about any Rich Rodriquez’s here. If Paterno does leave, the next guy is going to be super conservative making any chances.
Devlin over Clark would be a risk to that man (or woman if we decide to hire the first ever D-1 female head coach) that simply isn’t worth taking.

Thank you
“Let’s not go into panic mode over DC’s performance the last two games.” Seriously, the guy had a rough couple of games. The second of which was a game where he was coming off a concussion, it was balls-ass freezing, and the wind was whipping around. Let’s see what happens the last two games and the bowl game.

Im with Millzners
We havent had one consistantly “GOOD” QB in back to back years since Kerry Collins. Zack Mills was close, but really after 2002 he kinda crapped the bed? Not sure whether this is because our QB coach has never taken a meaningful snap, or maybe we have average QB’s that just “overacheive” for the better part of one season? Clark has completely exceded my expectations for this year, but he’s looked a little flat the last 2.5 games? I dont know that he should have been pulled in the Iowa game, but I see nothing wrong with a little competition in the Spring?

I look at this way we were not spose to win
Coming into the season who here really thought we would have 1 lose and it would have been to iowa. I am very happy from what I have seen in Clark. I would like to see Devlin get some more reps but I think it is Clarks team to lose. We will be able to tell more in the next 2 games and the bowl game. If we start to see more and more of Devlin then it might be up for grabs next year but if we don’t then it will be Clarks team. I think it will help the team also knowing who the QB is next year for the spring workouts.

I don't know about y'all
but I’m just excited that we have depth at QB. I think that up until this point, Clark has earned his starting position, but they should still compete next year. If Clark is the QB, as I would expect, I would hope that Devlin would get more snaps in 2009 to prepare him for 2010 (and opening up a can of whoop ass all over Alabama). We’re set until then, barring injuries, so we need to focus on recruiting the 2011 QB.

clark will be the stater just because of his moblity, devlin is a reincarnation of anthony morelli

yup
this is a big stereotypical reaction people have been having to our QBs this year.
“oh, they have a black guy and a white guy…the black guy must be a scramber”
If you’ve been paying attention, Clark hasn’t been running any more than say Zach Mills did (and actually probably much less).
Also, according to all preseason reports, Devlin, while not quite as good of a runner, is nearly as fast, and would probably be more than capable doing the running plays. (see: Tim Tebow)

We still have no idea
as Devlin hasn’t gotten on the field much at all. I just keep hoping to seed him come in earlier and I think they had every opportunity to do so against IU and didn’t. To say Devlin is AM ver 2.0 may be one of the worst things I think you could say about that poor kid.

At the beginning of this season
Joe said he made a mistake by not listening to Jay to play Clark more last year. Based on that comment, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Clark as the starter, but Devlin seeing more quality playing time next year than this. I was a 2 QB advocate at the beginning of this season and, even with as well as Clark has played, I would be next year as well. I think we say how far that idea floated this season, but I sill would not be surprised to see Devlin used much more frequently next year.

I can't help but wonder
If Devlin and Clark will end up being the centerpiece of something crazy in the bowl game, whatever it is. Remember the role Clark played last year…Maybe a Wildcat formation with those two and D-Will?
