as a head coach, naming an “in waiting” seems like a terrible idea to me. Unless you issue a specific number of years until the handoff, it can only have a negative effect on your eventual ending. Fans know they have stability and will probably shout a lot louder when they thing it’s time to “mix it up”. From the very next day after you name the successor it already looks like you are “holding on too long”.
