Pasadena travel / ticket plans (updated)!!!

Hey BSD nation! The boys manned up in a huge way and paved our road to Pasadena to meet :::insert Pac 10 winner here::: on January 1st! So now we have to get the ball rolling on getting as many of us out here to Cali to cheer on our beloved Nittany Lions and see JoePa and company take home our second Rose Bowl trophy.

So now, here is where we could use some inputs. StubHub is absolutely ridiculous on ticket prices so if there are any other avenues for package deals I, for one, am defi-Nittany in and I will try to help anyone out on this end as far as info from the local area and I know there are others who will be glad to do the same.

Let's keep this awesome season going and I hope to see many of you out here in January!!!

Thought I would drop a couple of things to do while in LA with my personal and parental ratings (if traveling with family... I am much closer to those lines as I have a 4yr old). These are the things I take every outside family member to see when they visit:

Hollywood Blvd / walk of fame: 4 Stars... not to be missed, a great time walking around and seeing the sights. Mann's Chinese and the Kodak theatres, wax museum, lots of bars and shopping. G-daytime / PG-evening (it gets weird down there after dark)

http://www.seeing-stars.com/Streets/HollywoodBlvd.shtml

Santa Monica Pier: 3.5 stars... a wonderful walk with some good restaurants (Bubba Gump and locals) and cool entertainment. It will be a slower time of the year but it is a boardwalk complete with gaming and rides on it (ride the ferris wheel!). I just dig hanging out and watching the performers and fishermen when it's slow. G/PG at anytime

http://www.santamonicapier.org/

Disneyland: 5 stars... need I say more? It's damned expensive but nothing else compares to it. I would go with any of you but my passes will be dark over the holidays. If you have kids coming and they have a birthday while they are here they get in free! (A longshot, I know, but just thought I would tell you about it). G all the time

http://disneyland.disney.go.com/disneyland/en_US/home/home?name=HomePage

Venice Beach: 3.5 stars... the freaks on parade. You haven't lived until you experience what VB has to offer... and after it, you may not want to (j/k). Here is what makes California what it is. Great sights, muscle beach, NBA talent with felonies playing on the public courts, nice shopping including local artists of all flavors, and acts of depravity are all on display. You never know what you get down there, so.... PG/MA depending upon who shows up

Most of these are quite a trek from Pasadena but they are some of my personal favorites and I thought I would include them for you. There are tons of comedy clubs, famous restaurants, shopping areas, Universal Studios and lots of other attractions, to be sure. If anyone has any special interests please let me know and I will give you as much info as I can and I will be sure to update this as people give me more ideas. See you soon!

the drive in from

Long Beach to the Rose Bowl isn’t too bad, I live pretty close to Long Beach and went to the Rose Bowl a couple of years ago before my Wolverines completely stunk it up. It might be worth it to save a couple of bucks and then hopefully be able to party a little more when your Lions (hopefully) win the Grandaddy of them All.

I was trying to show some of the finer things we have to offer here in SoCal and the LAPD just happens to be one of them :)

what the...??

the official Rose Bowl site link for tickets sends you to Dibz if you just want tickets, not the official package deal. Will tickets be available through PSU?

that's what I found, as well...

that Dibz thing is pretty much a scam and is no better than StubHub, from what I can gather. Please let me know if you guys see anything out there and I will be glad to jump in if you need numbers for a group ticket thing as it may just be me all by my lonesome :::sniff:::

I know, me too.

My brother just closed on a house and is not into shellin for cross-country for this (I think he might have eaten ramen noodles and sucked it up for a trip to Miami ::::sniff::::), and my wife is booked to the caribbean with her mom for NYE. So, I’ve been on my own for NYE planning. I’ve been thinking I was gonna look for a ski trip, but with PSU coming up Roses, they’ve kinda made my decision for me.

But now I’m looking for a travel buddy. Or wife-approved buddette (i.e. no strippers or ’escorts’)

hotels

What advice do you have on finding hotels in the area? My friends and I could really care less what quality the place is as long as the price isn’t outrageous.

I am going to look for some local travel mags

here in the next day that may have some kind of coupons or specials. Hawaiipennstatefan actually lives in Pasadena so I will yield to their advice as it is their hometown. Tentatively I am booked at the Holiday Inn Express about 11 miles away and much closer to the other cali sightseeing deals like Hollywood, etc. That hotel link is as follows and it is running $150 a day but I am using rewards points:

http://www.losangeles.com/holiday-inn-express-silverlake/

The other idea some people may want to consider is renting a motorhome if you are thinking of making a mini-trip out of it. For three days a larger RV will run about $400 and sleeps 5 people. You can save some $ by not using their kitchen kit (me or someone local can help you out with cookware while you are here if you need it) and it makes for a nice tailgate station. I may do the RV thing myself and I only live 40 miles from the Rose Bowl but it would make a nice tailgate HQ.

If you are staying at a Holiday Inn Express

doesn’t that qualify you to take over the BCS and institute a playoff? Or have those commericals misled me?

Also…you are getting a hotel even though you only live 40 miles away? Though I guess with SoCal traffic that could be a 5 hour trip.

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 24, 2008 7:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I am certain I will be in no condition to drive after the game.

Also, as you have guessed, the traffic could be a monster but I also wouldn’t want my family on the road that night to come and get me.

And, yes… after staying at a HIE, I should be in charge of the BCS and would be qualified to make wide sweeping changes and have them implemented immediately :)

RV Idea

TME, I like it. Our family’s been renting one for at least one game the past four years, and it has really worked out. We usually do one Co-ed Family trip and one Lads trip, and they’ve been great. Good for designated driving: pick one person to drive til the beast gets its final park for the night, which could be in a wallmart parking lot walking distance from the pubs. Good for $, as it saves on outlandish hotel fees.

Only trick is getting comfortable enough in close quarters; dare we try to pull that off with a group of online friends?

Could be good in SoCal for a lot of reasons…..

Know what ya mean jtothep...

I was even looking at rv sites around there as we have close friends out here who have a 35 foot trailer and I was thinking about parking it if I could find a place close by. Hopefully we can all figure something out on here in the next few weeks and save us all some $ and we can have a great time…

online friends… sound hot or a bit creepy? lol

LOL

Let’s mull over the ‘hot or creepy’ question over the next few weeks, along with other possibilities considerations, and see what we come up with. I gotta start by pinnin down my days where. Wifey leaves Mon 12/29. I might still look into getting a ski in, maybe stop off in Tahoe, ski Sat- Mon or Tues, before making my way to SoCal (and piling in the party van with TME!).

Also will check with bro-in-law in Long Beach, see if he’s up going to the game, what they’re doing for NYE, and how we might travel to and fro if pursuing that route. Any guess on how much a 34mile cab ride might run? lol. Twice as much as a HIE room? I’ve also got mad Hilton points from using one of their cc’s over the past two years exclusively, so will look into that. We’ll see how it all pans out….

I was at the Rose Bowl in '94....

you definitely need to rent a car to get anywhere in that area (as some of the locals can attest). Even if there is a hotel w/in walking distance (and I can’t remember there being one), you can’t get around the SoCal w/o one. If you are going to the parade, note that it will take you a few hours to get from the parade to the stadium (despite it being like 3 miles away) b/c of the traffic. My advice? TIVO the parade and head right to the stadium for tailgating. As long as the surrounding area isn’t on fire, it’s a beautiful view from the Rose Bowl.

Have fun! I’m sad I won’t be there to cheer on the Nittany Lions live and in person.

First time bowler here...

and I see that there is a package being up together by the alumni association. Is this a very popular option or are there generally ‘better’ tours out there. Better being subjective, I’m thinking it terms of value and atmosphere of the tour. Prefferably it would not feel like a class field trip from grade school.

What are some experiances people have had with the alumni tour or any other tour.

Thanks

Onward to the Rose Bowl!!!!!

by bconway6 on Nov 24, 2008 7:43 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The alumni tours is twice as expensive as it needs to be.

But you won’t be able to get tickets at face value from the Nittany Lion Club unless you have some serious points. Also, the tours and the teams book all the good hotels.

Also, the Rose Bowl is unquestionably the most expensive bowl in terms of tickets, travel, accomidations, etc.

If you have $7,000 no questions asked, take the alumni tour and forget about it. If not, it’s going to be a pain in the ass, especially because LA (unlike San Antonio last year) is not a very walkable city.

That is why I only go to shitty bowls.

My cousin lives in Pasadena

and I’m planning on crashing at her place. I still need to arrange travel ($550+/person it is looking like), and actually getting the tickets. The tickets are probably my biggest concern, but I heard Pasadena residents have a chance at getting them (I think they wait in line for a chance at a wristband, or something like that) so I may beg my cousin to do that for me.

Otherwise what are my options? I don’t have major points in the NLC (~20) so I don’t think I’d get face value through them then?

According to what the Alumni Association sent me, the cheapest package (gameday only) is still $434, and although I’m not unwilling to pay that if that’s the cheapest I’ll get, I’d like to go into as little debt as possible for this trip :-P

Less money also means better chance the gf won’t be as pissed at me for “wasting” my money on a “stupid” football game.

As soon as we get an idea on where to hit up the tickets

make sure to count me in! I will probably only need a single as the gals could care less and will be more interested in catching the parade as they will be decorating some of the floats. Every year the Kiwanis club that my wife is the president of helps decorate the floats and provides food and drinks to the other volunteer orgs and it all helps raise money for underpriveleged and needy children… and no, I am not as needy a child as some of you may like to think. :P

What do you know about the bus/metro system in LA? I was looking at it today and it looks pretty extensive. Is it reliable? and will it take you just about anywhere you need to go?

The metro rail

is actually really good and is one of the better kept secrets in LA. My cousin rides it between downtown LA and Hollywood and other locales all the time and she swears by it.

I, on the other hand, continue to destroy the O-zone layer/earth with my carbon footprint and drive almost everywhere I go and pay astronomical parking fees because if it. This is mostly due to the fact that the metro does not have a station close to where I live or I would definitely give it a run.

Moorpark...

Or as we called it back in the day, M.I.T. (Moorpark in Town), is a decent haul out of the LA area and the Metro does not go all the way out there, as of now. You can go to

www.metro.net

and that will show you all of the rail and bus maps. You are probably 20-30 minutes (15 miles) in light traffic from the Rose Bowl by car. You should definitely rent a car if you are going out Moorpark way as that is a decent journey from downtown LA but it is a pretty one once you clear the valley. Let me know what else you may need and I will try to help out!

Sign brings back memories!

Did my internship for Penn State in Palm Springs, and before ending the summer I scaled the barb wire fence (still have a scar on my hand), climbed the mountain and sat on the first “O” of the Hollywood sign, just to say I did it!

When you get up close to it you see that it is really covered in graffiti!

Wish I could make the trip as I went to the game in Pasadena against Oregon, but the budget won’t allow this year. Represent us well friends!

Penn State Bars

When Penn State played in the Orange Bowl, it was obvious where to stay… Miami Beach. The place was filled with Penn State fans. Many of the bar really catered to the Penn State crowd. Since LA is so spread out I am curious if there are going to be any bars that cater to us again. If someone knows where these hotspots will be, let me know.

Tailgating... Tickets I've seen so far...

Is it just me or all all the damn seats seem to be in the endzone when you go to ebay or whatever other site? Hopefully then ones close to the 50 (or at aleast out of the endzone) will open up next week when ticketmaster opens up with em.

FYI, we are on the higher numbered section (14-23) when picking the side. Rockin has suggested that we get a tailgate together and I am all for it once we get a bit closer to it me or someone else will start up a ‘roster’ thread and I’ll try and get more familiar with the Rose Bowl parkinf lot and surrounding area so we can get somehting set up.

I’m having a hard time convincing people to go. One guy is insisting that he has to report back to the Army on the 2nd (psh, like Iraq is that much more fun than the Rose Bowl) and another friend doesn’t want to go if he doesn’t go (psh again)

Tickets / seat location

TME, what up!

I’ve put in for two Nittany Lion Club tix on two different family accts (one with 278 lifetime pts and one with 51). I find out next week (12/11?) whether they were ‘accepted.’ But, anyway, one of them says in the hold I’ve got (pending acceptance) Section GA, [S] 1, which is the same indication on the parking confirm, so pretty much meaningless until acceptance time.

Anyway, I’ll keep you posted. My bro-in-law is in, so if the NLC 278 is good, he & I will take those. If the NLC 51 is good, I’ll gladly sell them to bsd’ers at face/builtin fees. I’ll chime in next week on that when I hear.

Also, since bro-in-law in the LBC is in, I’ve got my crash spot and driver, and will start preppin on tailgating day-of plans. Holla soon! —jp

His dad did graduate from Penn State

and we are known for agriculture and engineering…. (Maybe he’s a walking plant creation by one of Penn State’s brilliant minds…)

What did your dad major in while he was at State? ;)

Sick of wearing glasses? MURDER your eyeballs
Don’t like being fuzzy? Forget laser hair removal…MURDER your body hair!
Tired of sharing your Big Ten titles? MURDER tO$U

Oh, this list could go on and on

Hawaii

That is awesome you are finally going to a game….We so much need to have a tailgate. I will throw in some cash if someone can throw one.

So much local tailgate planning. I'm jealous.

If PSU ever makes it to the Big XII Championship game, I’m your man in Kansas City.

Ohhhh… Penn Stater’s tailgating at Arrowhead Stadium – that would be like two tailgating heavens colliding. I’m going to invent Burnt End Pierogies.

and yes,

I know I’m being ridiculous.

by Cairo on Dec 4, 2008 10:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

there's no such thing

as “ridiculous” when it comes to tailgating

by The JuggerNitt on Dec 5, 2008 8:42 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

How can we make this happen?

I totally want to tailgate at Arrowhead! Can we dress our drunken Lion up like a Tiger, hijack the Mizzou team bus, and sneak in as the Big 12 North Champion?

But then again, what would a victory over Oklahoma even mean if we end up losing to USC, and PSU & OU are being considered for the same blog poll spot?

Ooo - lookie!

The thread got bumped to the top again!

I’m still, sadly, not going to make it. Year end is brutal, and then there’s the two trips early in the year I’m already looking at. (February trip is for business, but it’s a week long trip and it’s in Vegas; the other is personal vaca to Milwaukee as part of my “Explore somplace not along the eastern seabord” series, and hoping/praying a chance to visit a grad school.)

So I’ll be holding down the fort here, ensuring that the gameday thread is chock-full of asinine remarks!

by IcersGuy on Dec 11, 2008 3:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

um....you know that Pasadena isn't on the eastern seabord, right?

just checkin…plus the weather is nicer than in Milwaukee

Iphone for the win

I will be able to make asinine remarks from the game. We still need to figure out how to set up some sort of tailgate at the game. I got tickets for the alumni tailgate but I’m figuring that perhaps might not be as fun as tailgating with a bunch of BSD’ers.

by Rockin on Dec 11, 2008 4:28 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Alumni tailgate...

doesn’t sound nearly as hot as a BSD tailgate

Yeah

I can’t figure out how to get this into the feature section again. So here is my suggestion:

Start a new thread. Include a link to this thread in the body of the fanpost. Then we’ll recommend that one into the feature section.

I created a new fanpost for it...

here:
http://www.blackshoediaries.com/2008/12/12/690377/rose-bowl-travel-tickets-t

I am sure we will break all of those issues down in the coming weeks but this way maybe we can get some immediate feedback on there for now
