Any word on Brooks ankle injury?
I don't know, Mello Yello is pretty awful. What's the worst that could happen?
by psu on Nov 23, 2008 12:34 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Prediction? PAIN.
PSU by 25. The fact that there’s no line on this game should tell you about the quality of opponent we’re facing here.
I also forgot about Brooks’ injury. I have yet to read any updates on his status so I guess we’ll find out in about 10 minutes whether he’ll be back in action.

Man, the BJC is packed...
I’m estimating about 1,000 hungover football fans in attendance.

Thank god, Cornley...
He needs to muscle his way to the basket like that more often.

Can somebody help me out...
I’m looking for a ticket to the basketball game. I’d prefer a seat on the bench if at all possible, but I am willing to settle for the scorers table.

At least we keep feeding the ball inside
That’s something I didn’t see much of in the NJIT game.
Unfortunately, the perimeter defense is looking like its old self.

10 minutes to go
And we’re already in the bonus. Cornley hits the front end of a 1-in-1 but misses the second. 17-14 UNH.

Back to the good ol' FT shooting
Looks like crap. Morrissey missing the 1-in-1?
EDIT: Nice drive to the bucket by Battle! Defecit down to 1 point.

Chris Babb is in.
Good to see him getting some meaningful PT. We’re going to need him to be a key player off the bench come Big Ten play.

Now we're starting to take control...
36-29 PSU at the half, after trailing for most of it. Good momentum boost going into the locker room. Hopefully we can pull away here in the second half.

Hahaha...
Sorry – I was up in State College with no internet connection.
And we’ll never get UNH to play at the Ice Pavillion – we’d have to go up there if we’d ever want to play them. When we get a new rink, then we might be able to work out something with them. Still might have to wait until we jump to the NCAA level.
The hardest thing is trying to get the teams to find a reason to play us when it’s not a lose-lose situation for them (they ultimately gain nothing, and it counts as a regular season game). We have had teams like Denver and Notre Dame express interest in having us go out there to visit, but they fell through due to NCAA scheduling rules.
Side note – we do head up to Salem, MA over the winter break to play against a couple of NCAA D-III teams. It’s always nice to have those sort of games on the schedule for now.

NCAA Level
What is the roadblock that has kept us from jumping to the NCAA level for hockey? Title IX?
by The Man with One Black Shoe on Nov 23, 2008 8:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
As far as I understand...
our biggest roadblocks are money and rink size. And by rink size, I mean seating capacity – the rink itself is regulation size, but we max out 1,500 including standing room. Plus, I’m not sure if the rest of the facilities are up to NCAA standards (what the NCAA would need for its officials to work properly). Around the hockey program, that has been one of the biggest projects for the past decade – finding a private donor to be willing to fork up millions towards a new rink for us.
After that, it’s a matter of getting the university to include the men’s and women’s ice hockey programs into the budget/funding. That was cut many a year ago, creating a lapse in ice hockey for decades, until the students decided to restart the team in the late 70’s. Spanier is usually good for an appearance or two each season, and he has always spoke highly of the program right now. It’s one of those things where if we can get the money for the facilities, they’ll be willing to slip us into the yearly finances.
As is, we’re pretty damn self-sufficient in terms of sponsorships, marketing, ticket sales, and booster donations.
And yes, we do have a women’s team, and they are in a sort of “growth” stage right now. They added a large number of freshmen and have a full-time coach, which is helping. (Also helpful that he was an assistant under Joe Battista for the ACHA DI Icers.) Young team, but getting better.

you, Mr IcersGuy, are the man...
thank you for keeping me informed on our hockey program. I still strut my Penn State hockey jersey around and a very few ‘in the know’ college hockey fans question its legitimacy with no D1 team but I shrug em off. We’ll cross sticks with the D1 someday thanks to guys like yourself who push the program. Thanks again, bro!!!
