I hate myself but I am already looking forward to next year!

So before I get flamed let me say I know this season is not done yet.  I am hoping that I can talk my daughter into going to the Rose Bowl with me since I need a driver. She is not a fan (I don't know how I failed in parenthood there) but here's hoping she can't resist a free trip to a warmer climate. But I just can't help not being excited about next year already.

Couple things I was thinking about

Joe is coming back.  Hell as good as medicine is becoming he may coach till he is 90 or older.  Hopefully his next innovation to the game will be to convince everyone to get a playoff started.  Maybe he and Obama can work on it together.

Sean Lee will be back.  I think his injury making him become a coach will make him just that much better.  I have always said that teaching or training someone is the best way to learn yourself.  Laurinitis will still probably have more tackles than him in college ball next year but some things are just baffling.

Maurice Evans will be back.  At the beginning of the year we probably all thought that he would be gone to the draft after this year.  What are the chances of Maybin and Evans both being on the field at the same time?

Bowman is a total BEAST!  Will be curious to see what next years LB set up is: Bowman, Lee, Hull?  Bowman, Lee, Stupar?  Personally I think that Paterno will go with Hull just because of his experience.  If Hull can get it together and play both halfs he can be good.  Stupar has definately earned some starter consideration with his outstanding special teams play.

Ogbu and Koromo will be back to make the Defensive Line great again.

Daryll Clark definately seems to be back to form and has put the concussion and any confidence problems behind him.

Evan Royster.  I can still visualize him breaking out of the middle of the pile in that one game where he was totally buried and then popped out and took off for the TD. Stephon Green can only continue to improve.  I like seeing him catch the ball and just taking off.  With wideout being weaker next year I can see Royster and Green getting the ball a lot more. Here is me cheering for Royster for Heisman already.

TE should be good no matter whether we go with Quarless or Szczerba.

Offensive Line will be a little weaker with losing so many seniors although Wisniewski will be back and a lot of the younger players got significant playing time.

The areas that scare me are CB's and Safeties.  Astorino looked good but beyond him none of the substitutes really stood out to me.  Here is hoping that the new starters will play with a lot of passion.

Wideout i'm not sure about.  Zug seems to be a nice target that Clark is comfortable going to.  Beyond him nobody seems to really stand out.  What happened to Chaz Powell?

So anyway sorry if I pissed anyone off  by jumping to next year already.  I need something to think about besides the BCS while I am waiting to see who we play in the Rose Bowl

Next year

Well if NCAA 09 for playstation is to be trusted we are going to have some struggles next year. I agree the D-line and LB’s should be awesome. So will Clark and Royster but we are going to be hurting on the O-line and at WR.

I just played next years season in the game and we went 10-3. There just wasn’t any protection from the line and no one to pass to. Just a game but still……… had me worried.

by markpsu on Nov 24, 2008 8:10 AM EST   0 recs

but did you get your backup OL and WRs playing time and experience during your 2008 campaign?

We will definitely fall off in talent at those positions, but hopefully after an even easier OOC schedule next year (and overall easier/more navigable schedule next year) the OL will have enough time to figure things out and solidify. The WRs are tough to predict. Looks like we have some guys with talent, but who knows how they’ll actually perform

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 24, 2008 8:47 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

oh and also

the video games have a hard enough time getting the CURRENT season’s players correct, and it always seems like they vastly underrate the backups.

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 24, 2008 8:48 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah...

…i don’t think ANYONE should think, not to mention worry about how a video game is programmed and equate that to predict a “human game”…lighten-up markpsu & relax…remember “any given Saturday…”

though they did have one thing right

if I recall correctly from one of the previous year’s versions. DC#17 > AM#14

Probably...

because they channeled the wisdom that is Jay Paterno.

This years game was freaky acurate

I went undefeated but only because I won with a last minute field goal at Iowa (somehow that was painful).

I did notice that next years schedule is even weaker then this years. The year after that will be fun….. AT Alabama!

Hinges on three things

1) The OL: Cannot understate what having a cohesive senior unit has meant. We’ve gotten PT for some other guys this year, but there’s no understating what losing 60% of our OL will mean. The good news is that given our recruiting lately, this next year will be the one aberration for a long time.
2) The WR’s: Put me in the camp that is concerned, but not THAT concerned. Remember, we went 11-1 in ‘05 when the triplets were all freshmen, AND we’ve gotten some other guys (Zug, Brackett) quality experience this year. We’re still in the running for two stud recruits (Brown/McNeal), so they could see PT right away.
3) The secondary: Area of least concern for me right now. Astorino will not miss a beat, and Wallace has ample experience. Rubin improved during the course of the year, but let’s face facts…he was a glorified “4th LB” most of the time, and struggled against the pass. It’d be nice to see if Sukay ever gets healthy. As for the opposing CB position? That’s more concerning. Timmons has the speed, but if he was that good then wouldn’t he be playing already? Lynn has the star ranking, but hasn’t done anything yet.

Long story short, our defense will keep us in most the games, and we will definitely have the talent to compete. That said, I can see a slight dropoff from this year.

WRs

I think you and I are the only people not worried about the WRs next year. 05 we had Williams, who was a freshman and didn’t play receiver in HS, Butler a redshirt FR who played DB the year before, Norwood a redshirt FR, and Golden, a soph. And we also had Robinson throwing to them, which really was his first year as a QB.
Next year we have Brackett and Zug. Each of those guys already get considerable playing time. Also throw in Chaz Powell and we got a good trio right there. I’m also expecting some of our younger guys to step up, especially Moye

by WPIALkid22 on Nov 24, 2008 5:50 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Be worried

Butler, Norwood and Williams have their limitations, but they will be missed. Brackett could be the new Jurevicious. Zug looks good, but he’s usually the 3rd or 4th option. At the very least there will be a drop off in precise route running and downfield blocking.

Diamonds in the rough and a blue-chip freshman coming together in 2005 is probably not something we’ll see for quite some time.

by gcdyersb on Nov 24, 2008 6:13 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I think a dropoff has to be expected

The defense should be fine. The front seven will be nasty. We return Astorino and Wallace in the secondary. The other two guys, whoever they are, will play themselves into shape by the time the conference schedule starts.

Derrick Williams is going to be a huge loss. He’s the one guy we have that keeps defensive coordinators guessing because he can do so much. I’m hoping they can shape a guy like Chaz Powell or Devon Smith into a similar type player.

As great as our wide receivers are, they did have limitations. They weren’t big guys that could outmuscle people for the ball. They had to rely on their speed to get open. Guys like Graham Zug and Brett Brackett have looked good in the limited opportunities they have seen. They run precise routes and have good hands though they may be lacking the top end speed the senior trio have. But I think we’ll be ok there. We also have Derek Moye and a few good freshmen coming in like A.J. Price, Derrick Thomas, and Brandon Felder. And we’re still in the mix for Justin Brown and Bryce McNeal.

The offensive line has me bothered. Wiz will probably move to center. Landolt is solid at right tackle. Deon’tae Pannell is already second string at left tackle so he looks like a three year starter in the making. We’ll need guys like Stankiewitch, J.B. Walton, Lou Elaides, Quinn Barham, Jonnie Troutman, and Mike Farrell to step up. My money is on Elaides and Walton to start.

by BSD on Nov 24, 2008 10:31 AM EST   0 recs

some dropoff expected

let’s see, in 2005 we were undefeated, save for a score with -1 second on the clock at Michigan.
2008 we were undefeated, save for a score with +1 second on the clock at Iowa
2009 we go undefeated, except for a score with +3 seconds on the clock at…Northwestern? Illinois? Either of the Michigan schools (I hope not)

Ah, F’ it. Let’s just go undefeated!

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 24, 2008 12:03 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Good Thoughts...

To add, but might be a stretch, Eric Shrive has the size and talent. He could get in there like Wiz did & possibly to begin the season as a starter. I think the re-shuffle will be Shrive/Elaides/Stankiewitch.

I view the WR’s differently. I’m on the Zug Bus; Brackett & Moye not far behind at all. A great spring for them with more reps/time familiarity with Clark & Devlin is key. They are bigger targets and this is a big change from our graduating trio…meaning a different threat…post patterns + over the middle.

Chaz Powell can be used like DWheels…he has great big play potential to catch and run.

Clark / Devlin / Royster / Green… what a backfield for ’09! Mix in Beachum/Powell & a healthy Carter…me likey!

by BlueWhiteLife on Nov 24, 2008 12:13 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

it is settled

We’ll line up all 4 in the backfield (plus occasionally Royster and/or Green can be lined up outside with Zug and Brackett)

I wonder how something like that would actually pan out. And I don’t mean like hte crap they did with Mills/Robinson in the dark years, where one of them was a useless decoy on the field. I mean maximizing the usage of all 4 guys on the field. I suppose it would be too risky/injury prone, especially for the QB that doesn’t just drop back, but could be interesting.

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 24, 2008 12:18 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Still a Spread HD scheme...

most of the should be starters will have the practice and game experience under their belts.
Though there will be more game films for other teams to pull/learn from next year, if we EXECUTE and keep the turn-over margin low…other teams will have to try to defend against it.

I know the coaching staff is not much for “trickeration,” but man, it seems we have the speed and talent for some of this gadgetry to get worked-in (like the play ‘Ole Miss used this past weekend vs LSU and I saw another highlight from a game with the “hook & ladder.” If we have true “ball handlers” I’d hate to not employ the skills & talent they have been blessed with!

S Green

Green is, in my opinion, already on par with what Williams was doing at this point in his career in terms of athleticism. I’m pretty sure, from where I was sitting, that Green got a chance to return a kickoff during the MSU game. This is, in my opinion, a precursor to what I hope to be D Will’s skill-position replacement.

Green isn’t a receiver, but he’s got as much speed as Williams and should be even better in yards after contact (his balance is excellent). I expect very big things from him in terms of lining up in the slot, returning kickoffs and punts, as well as providing that speed on the edges.

I know we haven’t seen him do much, b/c the coaching staff is “toughing him up” by forcing him to run between the tackles. This is part of his development, and completely necessary. He’ll become a more complete back by forcing him to run up the middle, because once he gets the skills to find a hole in the line he’s going to make LB’s and Safeties look stupid trying to catch him.

by millzners on Nov 24, 2008 12:19 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

I didn't think about that...

perception of the coaches “schooling/toughening” him up…if so…I hope that pays the dividens! Sounds smart too; kinda a Mr. Meyhaugi/Danielson approach…LOL!

Green

I was gonna mention him as a D-Will replacement, but I think it’d probably look a little different. I definitely don’t think they’ll line him up at QB. I think that’s the case for the whole offense. The talent/speed/skill will be there, it’s just a different type than this year.

by speedomike on Nov 24, 2008 1:09 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Not to take away from D-Will

but you really want a more compact build like Green’s to return kicks anyway — I’ve seen Green get knocked around pretty good and stay on his feet and keep his momentum. D Will’s build made him easier to bring down with an arm tackle.

Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, but I really think Green could do for us what Bush did for USC. Time will tell.

It's natural

To think about next year right now. We have over a month the the bowl game, and only other teams to watch. I acknowledge there are some significant losses, but next year’s schedule is ridiculously easy. The O-Line and Secondary are my biggest concerns. The weakness in the secondary should be overcome somewhat by the nastiest front 7 like, ever. There is some talent in waiting on the O-line, but it’s going to take some time to gel. Having an experienced (and really good) QB/RB should help some with that, but yeah that is definitely a concern. As far as the WRs, I guess I’m hoping we can pull a 2005 and get some instant impact guys in. It was good that Zug and Brackett got some significant experience this year. I’m wondering where Moye and AJ Price will fit in.

I just think we’ll be as good or better than pretty much every team on the schedule except for Ohio State (who we get at home later in the year and likely will lose Beanie). Iowa could be tough but we get them at home too. Illinois came back to reality this year and I wonder if Benn will go pro. Michigan is always tough in Ann Arbor, but I have a hard time believing they’re going to improve much next year. Plus we’ve exorcised that demon. Michigan State is recruiting well but loses Ringer and Hoyer so they’ll probably be a year away. So, while the team won’t be as good as this year, it’s possible they could come close to winning as many games.

by speedomike on Nov 24, 2008 10:35 AM EST   0 recs

Another thing...

Fair or not, we’ll probably start off ranked pretty high next year. I think a lot of pollsters will see some of the big names we return in key spots (QB, RB, Maybin, Bowman, Lee) and won’t look as closely at some of the guys we have leaving. I think top 10 is possible, depending on what happens in the bowl game. Definitely if we beat USC.

by speedomike on Nov 24, 2008 11:17 AM EST   0 recs

Stankiewitch

Would love to see him be able to take on the role at C. Then we could leave Wiz at G. Filling the other spots with Landolt, Wiz, Pannell, and one of the guys Mike mentioned (or Shrive) should like a decent line.

It may be tough to take on the center position with no experience though, especially filling A.Q.’s shoes.

Secondary recruits

Our ‘09 class is stocked with defensive backs, including two 4 star recruits (Givens, Thomas). I doubt Paterno would give them a chance to get real playing time next season, but it sounds like we’ll have some depth in the secondary. Let’s hope these guys are the real deal and can contribute early.

by psuquinn on Nov 24, 2008 2:15 PM EST   0 recs

I kinda doubt it

Seems like it’s very rare for corners to get playing time early. It’s such a technical position that needs to be learned over a period of time to be productive at this level compared to high school. Having the footwork and hips to play the ball often takes a lot of time. But I’m with you, if they can contribute early, look out.

by jimbo2psu on Nov 24, 2008 3:02 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

And this is why they don't have an elite defense

Realistically, it’d be tough for any team in the Big 12 to have a top 20 defense because nearly every team plays to maximize the number of possessions in a game, leading to more yardage and points. But the better defenses in the league, like Texas and Oklahoma, still have some weaknesses.

Starting freshmen in the secondary may not be disastrous, but the defense won’t be dominant.

by gcdyersb on Nov 24, 2008 6:08 PM EST to parent up   0 recs

Senor Rockin...

First of all, your daughter… sounds hot (sorry had to be done)

Second: Yes, the defense looks like we will be verrrrry scary in the front 7 or 8 and I cannot wait to see Lee take all of that invaluable coaching experience with him onto the field… that will only make him that much better

Third: Our recruits not only look very promising, but most will be enrolling in the spring as is the new custom with these high powered recruits so I think we may get some nice surprises out of them

Fourth: Our schedule eats it. We should be able to really put a nice team together and have them mesh nicely as we play what I consider scrimmages in the first few weeks.

I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member

Next Year

I am excited about next year. I am a little disappointed, still, about the Iowa garbage, but, this report makes me realize that we can have a great 2-year run. Maybe this year will be our 81 to next year’s 82 or something like that. This could be one of the greatest 2-year runs in PSU history, ranking up there with 77-78 and 85-86.

by PABroncofan on Nov 25, 2008 1:25 AM EST   0 recs

We have enough talent coming back next year on both sides

There are key players that will be missed but there’s enough talent returning on both sides to be good. Our schedule is also more favorable than this year’s because we don’t have to go to Madison, Iowa, or Columbus. I think we’ll hit double digit wins again next year.
