Who are you guys REALLY pulling for in the Civil War?
So Oregon State-Oregon is a big game not only for the two schools involved, but also the Big 10 and the Pac 10. We know the if Oregon State wins scenario. But if Oregon State loses, it opens up another BCS spot for Ohio State. I also know that a Penn St- OrSt rematch isn't ideal for many of you fans. But I would hope that you would be pulling for Oregon State over Oregon because, well, Oregon is the Ohio State of the west- just plain, downright evil. So does this bring PSU fans to a cross roads? I'd love to hear your opinions on the matter, and please, I know there are no hard feelings between the two fans.
I personally was thrilled at the idea of tailgating with PSU fans over tOSU fans. More fun, better atmosphere. Rather then having to talk shit all day long and listen to tOSU fans tell us why they deserve to be CO-champs, we get to drink and eat together and watch what I would think to be a damn good football game. Anyways, PSU fans, what do you think about the possibility (probability) of playing us again in the Rose Bowl?

It's complicated, my man.
If we had no actual interest in the outcome, I think most PSU fans would be rooting for the Beavers. I mean, there’s no real reason to dislike your program and you haven’t been to the Rose Bowl in what, 40 years?
Still, rematches are really only fun when there’s a rivalry involved, and getting a chance to play USC doesn’t come along often for us. So I would assume that most PSU fans are hoping for that scenario, although nobody should really get too bent out of shape about either outcome. I mean, what the hell, it’s the Rose Bowl. We’re happy to be there either way.

And I should add...
…despite the allure of a PSU-USC matchup, I find the Beavers and their fans to be a rather likable bunch and will be rooting for them.

Oregon
But not because I don’t want a rematch. I want them to lose so we can get a shot at USC, the mighty USC. I want to prove to the national media that the Big 10 is not a joke and that WE ARE NOT tOSU. By beating USC it validates who we are as a team to the media. Beating Oregon State again doesn’t do anything for the national perception of the Big 10 or us.
As much as I want to watch Quizz Rodgers again, I just think playing USC, an overrated team (they get by on how many 5* they recruit the previous year) would really send the Seniors who turned the program around out on a high note.

Pulling for Oregon State - and I feel like the only one.
I seem to be the only one who wants Oregon State to win next week.
My reasons:
1) I haven’t recovered from the Penn State Dark Years enough to complain about PSU’s opposition in the Rose Bowl. Just making it is still immensely satisfying. Does anyone think the January ’95 Rose Bowl is less great because it involved the Ducks?
2) The Big Ten would destroy their opposition in the bowl games if everyone was knocked down a peg (Ohio State to the Cap One, MSU or Iowa to the Outback, etc.). The reputation of the Big Ten is so low now that I think some postseason success would be better than anything to boost Penn State up near the top of the rankings. Plus I’d be satisfied knowing “co-champion” Ohio State would whine all the way to the Capital One Bowl.
3) I have no beef with the Beavers. Oregon State fans were good people who stayed all four quarters of a blowout at University Park. Also, my dad went to Oregon State so I there’s a bit of bias.
My friends think my reasoning is insane. They are totally non-hetero about playing USC.
by Cairo on Nov 24, 2008 4:53 PM EST 0 recs
'95 rose bowl
I’ll go out on a limb and say that the 95 rose bowl was less great because it involved (an upstart) Oregon team.
A sexier win that year (say 11-1 USC) would have gone a long way to atleast a share of the national title, and while I know I claim a national championship that year, we dont have the hardware to prove it.
For that reason we gotta root for Oregon.

My thoughts
First off, I have all the respect in the world for the Beavers. I think you guys did a great job of regrouping after the horrible start and rallying to make a good season out of nothing. If Penn State and Oregon State met again today on a neutral field I think the score would be a lot closer than it was back in September.
But, (I’m sure you knew that was coming) I would rather play USC at this point. It’s nothing personal, it’s just that playing a rematch between the two teams takes a lot of luster off the Bowl Game. An 11-1 USC team is a lot more sexy than a 9-3 Beaver team. That’s just the reality of the situation. We blew out Oregon St. in the first game, so anything less than that will be perceived as underachieving in the eyes of the media. Penn State really has nothing to gain by playing that game again. But knocking off USC would be a big feather in our cap and bring back some respect for our conference is really suffering image-wise.
But I don’t think any of us will be rooting against the Beavers. You guys became our second favorite team after you knocked off USC this year. We owe Oregon State a lot of gratitude for making us look better. Whatever happens in the Civil War happens, but I won’t really be rooting for either team to win or lose. I’m just patiently waiting to see who our opponent will be.

I have a friend that got
PSU +7 in the Rose Bowl right after the Michigan State game, with no opponent being announced, which tells me two things…
The bookies think that Oregon State is going to lose, and that they think that USC will be at least a 10 point favorite over PSU.

I'm torn in a bunch of directions
First off let me say that whatever happens, I’m still content with just being in the Rose Bowl, which is more than any of us expected to start the year.
Now for my ideal situation: The improbably sequence of events unfolds that puts Penn State in the National Championship game, and the Beavers in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State (who I could see getting an at large bid if we do go to the title game…but maybe not).
But out of the likely scenarios, the one I want most is for us to play against USC. People have stated how beating them will do a lot for our program’s image, and the image of the Big 10 overall. Since for that to happen, Oregon State must lose, then I will be hoping for a Ducks win (but definitely not rooting for them, or against you guys).
I’m also torn on what bowls I want the Big 10 to go to. Obviously it looks better if our conference can send 2 teams to the BCS and WIN those games, but I don’t know if anyone trusts Ohio State to actually win. They’d probably get matched up against Utah anyway and wind up losing to them, further humiliating themselves (but if PSU can win big over USC then that won’t matter quite so much to us :-D ). I think, again more likely, that if all the Big 10 teams go down a peg, they stand a better chance of winning, and making the conference look better.
Of course, I am at MSU now, and have a lot of Sparty friends, and would like to see them do as well as possible.
So yeah, torn on all angles, but I think the edge unfortunately goes towards OrSt losing.

In a Perfect World
In a perfect NCAAF world, the following would occur:
1. NC game: Florida Texas (would be a great matchup)
2. Fiesta: Oklahoma Utah (let Oklahoma prove they can beat a non-BCS team in a BCS bowl)
3. Sugar: PSU USC
4. Orange: Texas Tech Alabama (2nd best from the two best conferences)
5. Rose: Oregon St. Ohio St.
No one will convince me the Big East or ACC deserves a BCS bid this season. Also, there is no reason the top 8 teams shouldn’t all get BCS bids to play each other, instead of whoring out bids to conference champs.

I'd rather not rematch
I’m not worried about being embarrassed by OSU, and I don’t think PSU would win in a blow-out again. It’d be a pretty good game in all likelihood. But PSU has nothing to gain in a rematch against a team it beat by a large margin earlier this season.
So, I’ll be happy if Oregon wins next week.
But the flip side has some positives as well. Ohio State will drop from the BCS, putting the Big 10 in more favorable bowl match-ups. Two BCS qualifiers from a conference that has little quality beyond Iowa and (maybe) Michigan State would be placing the also-rans against tougher opponents.
So, an OSU win has a domino effect that will likely lead to the Big Ten winning at least 4 of its bowl games. This is not so bad.
PSU comes first, though, and the result I want is one that gives USC a home game against PSU on New Year’s Day. It sucks that it won’t be a neutral field, but that’s life.

About what I figured
And we know it’s not personal. Hell, if we had just done our jobs and beaten Stanford and Utah, then an 11-1 (and most definitely top 10) Oregon State does look a lot sexier. But this is about what I assumed from PSU fans.

The loss to Utah was worse
OrSU totally blew that game. That game actually reminded me of the OrSu Arizona game this weekend. Both games were lost by coaches not players. I have all the respect for OrSU, but they didn’t win that game this Saturday, Zona lost it. Zona played ball control with a 1-point lead. It came to passing on 3rd down (which if failed would give the Beaves 2min) or run, which they did in a horrible fasion. So the Beaves had 1.5min instaed of 2. And then Zona does the opposite of the bend but don’t suck defense (how the hell Zona could let Straughter get separation over the top is beyond me). The OrSU kicker had just missed an extra point, all they had to do was keep every play infront of them and the worst that would have happened would have been a moderately long field goal.

but i’ll be rooting for the Ducks. If not for our choke against Iowa I would be rooting for you though. I want USC. I think a close loss to USC would gain us more national respect than a blow-out win over OrSU, even if it wouldn’t be reflected in the poles.

Just some food for thought.....
Just to add another perpective to this conversation, as a USC fan, I myself, (and most of the fans I know) are going to be rooting like hell for Oregon state this weekend. May seem a little strange considering that an Oregon state loss would give SC another Pac Ten crown but ultimately we fans want a good bowl game and more importantly, we want, (just like your fans do) a bowl match up whereupon a victory garners plenty of national respect. Not meant as a slight to the Nittany Lions, because indeed I think you guys have a great team this year, but SC has nothing to gain by going to another Rose Bowl and playing the Big Ten yet again. It’s a lose/lose for us. Win, and SC does nothing more than do what all the pundits will expect. Lose, and it’s a terrible end to another season of stratospheric expectations that ultimately fell short. Can’t blame SC fans for feeling this way really. In the past six years in BCS games and regular season match ups, SC has hammered Michigan twice in the Rose bowl, creamed Illinois in another, schlacked Iowa in the Orange Bowl, and most recently, slaughtered Ohio State during the regular season. SC has absolutely nothing to gain in the national media by beating the Big Ten. Been there done that as they say. It’s too bad really, because it would probably be a great game. However as a fan, I’m rooting to for SC to play in the Fiesta Bowl against a top Big 12 or SEC team. Anyway, just my 2 cents. Take it easy.

I can see that point and would love
to see USC take apart one of these other ‘untouchable’ teams as far as our matchups would go because there is no way we get a piece of an OMG ESS EEE SEE team and USC would probably do some real damage against one of them and quiet some people down for all of us.
I would love to see the Beavers down in the Rose Bowl (watch it, people…) as I have nothing but respect for their fanbase and all of the support they have given us all year long. The rematch thing means absolutely nothing to me as our game will have no real implications on final rankings so I would like to see us hang with some classy fans and watch a good game in the Rose Bowl without the atypical USC bandwagon douchebags that come out of the woodwork and screw it up for the good Trojan fans (there are more of the former out here than you can imagine).
Keep it rolling, Beavs! I know there were a few of us on Building the Dam this last weekend and I enjoy hanging there and having fun with s good bunch of people. I kinda have to disagree...
People out here are incredibly passionate about the Lakers and have been very loyal to them (not that they have had a real bad stretch lately). I wouldn’t say they are as bandwagon as the above mentioned teams as they really are pretty much all we have because as hard as I try, hockey still isn’t catching on big out here. The problem with them is the Staples Center is so unbelievably overpriced no one outside of the uber rich can get a decent ticket there so most of us are forced to catch em on KCAL and FSN which also elimintaes the danger of being stabbed in the parking lot so that is a win for me :)

Not that anyone wants a rematch but,
This is more than Penn State vs Oregon State again. The Oregon State fans were great up at Happy Valley and I would like to tailgate and have fun again. BUT, I really would like to see Penn State play someone ranked higher (even if that team does not deserve their ranking) to show how Penn State can play with the “big boys”.
All that being said, I am however rooting for Oregon State to win, because of the “CRYING” Pete Carroll has done about not understanding the BCS!!!. He seemed to understand it all to well a few years back when other deserving teams were getting screwed, he said “We are going to play because it is what we have been told we deserve.” or something very close to that. Now all of a sudden he does not understand how it works and goes to the media to complain/cry about not getting his chance to play in the championship game. [AND GET THIS] He is not even in control of his destiny to win his own conference to get an automatic bid into any BCS game let alone the CHAMPIONSHIP….
Pete learn to take care of your own business first, then if warrented complain later.
Here is to the Penn State – OSU match up… Go Lions beat an OSU for the third time this season!!!

Glad you're rooting for us, but...
If you wanted to get back at Pete Carroll, rooting for us isn’t the way. USC doesn’t want the Rose Bowl. They know they are getting to a BCS bowl no matter what happens in Corvallis on Saturday. They would prefer to play in the Sugar or Fiesta (most likely) against and SEC or Big 12 team to try and put those matters to bed. Not saying PSU isn’t a worthy opponent, but you know how the conference bashing goes: them beating you means they just beat “another Big 10 team”; it’s a lose-lose. Much like it’s a lose-lose for you guys to play us.

I don't think Pete Carroll would look at PSU as a weak Big 10 team
And the Rose Bowl isn’t just another game. While it’s not the ideal game, he knows the importance. You’ve seen how many “big games” USC has lost since Pete took over. I can only think of 1: Texas in 2005. And it took the amazing Vince Young to do it. I would expect Petey C to have his team fired up. What a great match up it would be.
So you guys have been here before, and I know a lot of OSU students are unclear on how to get tickets, so what’s the policy, how do we get tickets, etc? I know a lot of students are ready to buy up and set plans in motion to spend New Years with the PSU faithful around 8 PM on Saturday :-D

right about the "sticking it to USC"
USC will get a bowl game either way. The best way for us to “stick it to him” would be to have another team from the “weak Big 10” come and lay the smack down on him. Unfortunately that would mean you guys won’t be joining us.

Depends if I pick with my heart or with my head
I have always followed Oregon State. I like seeing that they have had a good season. I like to see teams do well that haven’t done well for awhile. I would be very happy to see Oregon State play in the Rose Bowl. I had alot of fun tailgating with Beaver fans. They were excited about coming to Penn State for a game. Unfortunatley we already played them and beat them. It would be a damned if you win damned if you lose game for Penn State. We would not gain anything from that game. All teams play to gain something in the end. It just isn’t wise for us to want to play a team we already beat. Hopefully something happens where Penn State plays in the NC and Oregon State still plays in the Rose bowl and USC loses to ND or UCLA or both.

I'm gonna give an A.Q Shipley Answer
I mulled this a bit the past few days. But when I read this quote from Shipley, it all cleared up and I knew how to think about it right.:
"No matter how much is at stake, it’s a game and the reason I play this game is not to get uptight," Shipley said Wednesday morning. "The reason I play it is to be smiling, to just have as much fun as I can have on Saturdays.
He helped me remember one of my favorite things I love college football: regional fandom. As jacked up as a league with 120 teams and limited ‘major league connectivity’ (thx bb&w!) is, there’s a very cool result in that we have these pockets of fans in different regions around the country. We know from being PSU fans that we have a massive and passionate fan base that travels well and generally exhibits class (and hopefully other fans around the country know that too). In the few years since I’ve been not broke, I’ve gotten a whole lot out of visits to Miami, Nebraska and um, ahem, even Syracuse.
That quote also helped me remember how little interest I have in the concept of ‘national respect.’ I was 8 years old watching the 79 Sugar Bowl when my mom told me about Nixon trumpeting Texas in 69, and it’s been that way ever since. So it’s not a battle I’m interested in. Like Shipley, no matter how much is at stake, the reason I watch is to be smiling, to just have as much fun as I can have on Saturdays.
And you know what? USC fans don’t sound like much fun for me on Jan 1. They’re unlike me in that they’re still so very interested in ‘national respect.’ And I even read above how they’re hoping to not win the Pac 10, so they can get the kind of marquee matchup that they believe Penn State would not provide. Plus, I can’t blame them for wanting a trip to New Orleans when they live and breathe Pasadena all the time. So, I say, go on then!
And after that I thought about Oregon. They’re pretty easy to hate, really. Start with Phil Knight, which flows quickly to the hideous unis (many of them player designed!) and a whole university being corporate sponsored. I didn’t even really like Steve Prefontaine; he seemed like kind of a dick. I remember reading an awesome SI article (back when they wrote the most awesome sports articles) about 5-10 years ago about the Civil War (maybe Elihu can pull some archiving skillz again). It just sounds freakin awesome. Something about grandmothers spitting on players coming through the tunnel and families taking a ‘break’ from each other if members went to different schools. And the fact that Corvallis and Eugene are only 40 miles from each other. I guarantee I’ma get to one of those games before my time on this earth is done!
I also thought about how much fun the Beaver fans are, how much fun I had over at the Dam Sat night, how cool they sounded in our open thread here, when I was on vacation in Burgundy and missing meeting them in person. I thought about them not having been to the Rose Bowl in 40 years and I thought about their respectable coach and their mad talented skill players like Stroughter and Quizz (bad news he won’t be available sat) and Quizz’s brother (c’mon, his name ain’t half as cool as Jacquizz!) and even that backup lefty qb that looked so poised last Sat night.
So, yeah, given I don’t give a shit about ‘national respect’ (whatever that is) and given that one of my favorite parts of being a college football fan is the damn fans themselves, I say bring on the Beavers. Beat the hell outta them doucheyducks and bring your bad selves down to Pasadena to party and hang with us Lions again. And since this got ridiculously long anyways, I’ll leave yas with an Ice-T verse all this ranting reminded me of:
But don’t get me wrong, most fellas do rock
They put their hands in the air, they take the show to the top
They start rockin’ with the ladies once the show begins
They don’t stand lookin’ stupid like some mannequins
They don’t lean against the wall like they’re in some trance
They did not come with no intention to party or dance
You know what? you dead beats should just stay at home
Leave me, my homeboys, and the beavers alone

My sentiments EXACTLY. I will see you on Building the Dam on Saturday and I hope to see you and VD (not that kind) at a tailgate at the Rose Bowl and we are all getting drunk together. Well done, good sir. Well done.

You folks may be the only ones on BtD Saturday, maybe try getting an open thread over here?
I’m just saying, home games for us usually don’t amount to many Oregon Staters being on the open thread. And every single person in the state of Oregon will be tuned in for this year’s Civil War. Even people that know nothing about football have been talking about the game. It is, arguably, the 2nd biggest Civil War EVER (the first being the 2000 Civil War, featuring #3 Oregon vs #6 Oregon State)

Boy, jtothep, nothing like putting a bunch of pressure on me...
to find some obscure article based on your partial recollection of what you think you remember and when.

It’s about the Civil War. It’s from 11/2000, which is 5-10 years ago. It mentions spitting.

There are a couple of reasons for my skillz.
1. I’ve been using the internet since before some of you were born. (When I went to PS in the early 80’s, we called it ARPANet instead of the internet.)
2. My sister works for Time-Life & I feel obligated to find the SI references for people. If you look at the ALUM Stumper on page 63 of the Nov/ Dec ‘08 Penn Stater magazine, she’s the answer. It’s the issue with the Sean Lee interview on page 26.
