You see a lot more diversity on the media team since beat writers tend to push their own guys sometimes. But still Penn State managed to get seven players on the first team and another six guys on the second team.

In addition, a few players took home some individual awards. A.Q. Shipley was named Offensive Lineman of the Year and Gerald Cadogen was awarded a Sportsmanship Award. In addition, Joe Paterno was voted Big Ten Coach of the Year by the media for the third time in his career.

Not bad for a team nobody picked to finish in the top three in the beginning of the season.

120 clams

Very nice. Good thing you didn’t take that NC bet. I remember reading a Big10 magazine that had us at 8th or something like that in the Big10 (Michigan was in the top four to show you how stupid the writer actually was). Glad we showed them!!

Great Investment

Nice decision, your return outperformed the S&P by over 533%.

Sweet.

I congratulated you then and will do so again now. I love the self-cite, too! Nice work.

There should be a 'studliest dude on the field when allowed to play' position

and Zug should have it. This list, as far as I am concerned, is incomplete and is therefore a farce

I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member

Congrats to the whole team

Its great to see so much recognition of the tremendous talent we had on the team this year. It was really a team effort though, without the teamwork, dedication and leadership this team showed, I shudder to think what this year would have been like.

Point I would like to make...

I think it is interesting to note that (going by the coaches poll) 6 of our 10 1st team players are seniors, so congratulations to the seniors for they’re hard work individually as well as collectively. Now that seems like a head shot for us in 2009, but the other 4 1st team players that aren’t seniors are absolute studs:

1. QB Daryll Clark – is there a position more important than QB? At Penn State? We are so damn lucky to have Daryll back for another year, something we didn’t have the experience of with MROB. Playing lights out.
2. DE Aaron Maybin – freakish ATH.
3. DT Jared Odrick – superior ATH playing DT at 6’5 305-315-ish…playing lights out.
4. LB Navarro Bowman – freakish ATH.

I would say a second year QB that completed 60 % of his passes and totaled more than 2,500 yards and 26 total TDs in his first season under center, as well as a flashy DE, stud DT & stud LB isn’t a bad foursome to regroup behind in ’09.

Throw in guys like Brett Brackett and Graham Zug at WR, Stephfon Green and Evan Royster at RB, Stefen Wisniewski and Dennis Landolt on the OL, ridiculous amount of players on the DL, and AJ Wallace/Drew Astorino in the secondary FOR ‘09…quite frankly, I’m feeling pretty good about next year.

Let us also not forget LB Sean Lee, he would have undoubtedly been 1st team in the coaches poll as well, and he would have been the 7th senior but now we get him as a tandem with Bowman. For those who don’t have faith because of a lack of speed at WR or the losses on the OL, all I will say is that WR is a fairly easy position to make some contributions.

OL….we’re not going to replace Shipley, this is a given. If the staff deems it necessary to move Wisniewski to C we will be very solid at the position and would most certainly be able to field two capable OGs. Landolt is at either LT or RT, Eliades and Pannell are at either LT or RT as is Nerraw McCormick. We probably need one of those 3 to fill whichever OT position Landolt doesn’t play, and it seems reasonable. We’re not going to be as proficient, but we have many interior options whether Wiz stays at OG or moves to C, we just need an OT to step up so we don’t get Clark or Royster killed.

First things first though, let’s finish this season right! I’m pumped :)

by RBGmug on Nov 25, 2008 3:56 AM EST   0 recs

I was going to make the same point

Of all the players recognized above, six of them return next year. (Clark, Royster, Wiz, Maybin, Odrick, and Bowman) And four of those guys still have two years of eligibility left. So we should have a nice nucleus to rebuild around next year.

by BSD on Nov 25, 2008 7:38 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Not to be a buzzkill, but...

Are we sure that Maybin will be back? He is eligible for the draft and I’ve heard that there is interest in him. Has anyone else heard anything on this?

by lmrlion on Nov 25, 2008 8:37 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

I think he will be back.

Could be wrong, of course. Check out the comments here.

Space Emperor

Zoltan is the first team punter? How many lousy punts did he have during the PSU-UM game? 2 or 3?

I guess he gets the spot just on volume of work alone.

Luring recruits with my new "Posting HD" scheme since '08.

by 06Lion on Nov 25, 2008 7:15 AM EST   0 recs

that, and being Michigan's MVP

also, do you really want to mess with a Space Emperor? He’d probably destroy the planet if he didn’t get the vote.

2009

Michigan is going to dominate in ’09. 100% of our 1st team all Big Ten players are returning.

shit

He’s right.

Also

Royster had roughly HALF the carries of Ringer, with only about 300 fewer yards. I shudder to think of what would’ve happened if we let him play past halftime in a lot of those early game, or if our offense wasn’t completely one-dimensional.

Can’t disagree with Greene though, came outta nowhere to be the best RB in the country. Yes OSU fans, better than Beanie.

Right.

The only benefit of running Royster at the Ringer level would be to pad stats, it wouldn’t have made our offense any more effective. Besides, I doubt Royster would trade places with any back in the Big Ten right now; he gets room and has a QB who forces the defense to play him honest.

Laura

Frankly, I think the All-Big Ten team is beneath him and his abilities. He should probably just decline his award and create his own. We can call it the All-Bosworth squad.

by The Mess on Nov 25, 2008 8:44 AM EST   1 recs

I am dissapointed, he is not a game changer like some other B10 D players

After watching alot of football this fall I would give the defensive award to Mitch King. He is a game changing beast, and not just against us. No other D player that I saw had the impact he did, Laura is on par with some of the other good LB’s in the league but that is it. I would pick Jenkins as a better D player on tOSU.

We just needed a couple players, a couple people to buy in to the fact and we were able to do it. --A.Q. Shipley

by psu on Nov 25, 2008 9:20 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

I am so tired of this guy...

I saw a lot of the OSU-UM game and the dude was never anywhere near the play. So happy to see him go.

by PSU Jen on Nov 25, 2008 9:27 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

not according to the commentators

in fact I was in the Centre County Welcome Center (or whatever it is called) watching the final minute or so of that game and the commentators were circle jerking themselves about him saying about how even if he doesn’t make the tackle, he’s always near the play. I was like, that must be announcer-speak for “likes to jump on piles”

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 25, 2008 9:34 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

On the awards show when they showed his "highlights" for being D POY ...

every time he was shown in the backfield, it was hitting the qb after the ball was already gone.

Ringer

Ringer over Royster and Wells is a crime.

by Wlvrn99 on Nov 25, 2008 8:47 AM EST   0 recs

Ringer

MSU is going to be so screwed without him next year. And they also lose Hoyer. Good luck with that, Dantonio.

by BSD on Nov 25, 2008 9:14 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Sounds like a recipe for another beatdown.

I hope JoePa & Co. have no mercy on Dantonio next year and the year after….because he made me be cold the other night for 10 additional minutes.

by jimbo2psu on Nov 25, 2008 9:25 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Sparty -- IT'S SO ON!

I want (metaphorical) blood next year! There was no real rivalry, but you got one now Dantonio!

Typically a team would be looking to payback teams that beat them the previous year. This will be the first time I’ll be rooting for us to pummel someone we destroyed.

That was a damn cold time for me and the 5 year old, although the victory celebration was even sweeter. Too bad more fans didn’t stay.

by PSU Mudder on Nov 25, 2008 9:33 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Dantonio

His biggest problem, aside from being an insecure tool, is one of expectations. This year was set up as well as it could possibly be for him. Big Ten way down, UM in particular having it’s worst year in history, seniors at key positions, ND down, etc. And he still had a mediocre year, getting destroyed by the two good Big Ten teams they played. Realistically, the table will never be set as well for him as it was this year, but fans will still expect a continued up-trend.

When things break this well for you at a place like MSU, you need to win big and store up some fan goodwill. As it is, i give him 3 more years. Maybe I should start a countdown clock.

by Wlvrn99 on Nov 25, 2008 9:31 AM EST to parent up   1 recs

Holy crap

On our offensive line, from the coaches’ voting:

The offensive lineman of the year (Shipley)
3 first-teamers (Shipley, Ohrnberger, Cadogen)
1 second-teamer (Wisniewski)
1 honorable mention (the only guy left, Landolt)

It’s no wonder we ran over, around and through nearly every defense we came up against this year. When you can pass the ball and run the ball, consistently, as well as Penn State has this year it probably says more about your line’s dominance than any particular skill position player (although it helps that those guys are mostly awesome, too)…and this voting is clear evidence of that.

by jimbo2psu on Nov 25, 2008 9:41 AM EST   0 recs

but as some ESPN analysts had said

Penn State had only an average O-line

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 25, 2008 10:18 AM EST to parent up   0 recs

Yeah

and “way overrated”. Big ups to Herbie once again for setting the record straight there. He laughed at whoever said that on College Gameday.

Tyrell Sales

Looking through the Honorable Mention list, I have a few questions. But the biggest question of all is this: Tyrell Sales at honorable mention for linebacker? He must be much better than I thought, because I didn’t think he stood out this season.

Next season barring anything unforeseen, we’ll have a returning 1st-teamer (Bowman…shield the women and kids), a returning honorable mention, and that Sean Lee guy all at LB. Remember the infamous 6-4 game of a few years back? Maybe we could win a game 8-6 next year if we had to, on 4 safeties???

by jimbo2psu on Nov 25, 2008 9:46 AM EST   0 recs

Sales

Sales is graduating, we won’t have a returning honorable mention linebacker.

sales

for this play alone sales gets an honorable mention

More Ty Sales

Yeah, I gotta believe this is quite an achievement by Ty, to get recognized like this by Big Ten coaches. Maybe even an overachievement given his talent level. In any case, he’s a vintage Penn Stater: bought into and believed in the program, worked hard, kept his mouth shut, saw the field a bunch in his late years and relished the ‘privilege’ of playing in front of 110,000. Big ups to Ty and best of luck in the future!

Tyrell Sales stats through 12 games

I’ll get this out of the way first, he isn’t even on the field all the time and he has 5 or 6 less solo tackles than tOSU’s JL. I’m not a huge fan of Tyrell at OLB, I thought he would have been better in the middle, and he did see time in the middle early in his career. He is our 3rd leading tackler as well, FWIW:

64 tackles (39 solo-25 assisted). 2.5 TFL, 1 PBU, 1 INT, 1 FF.

Please not again...

Why would you even wish that upon your fellow PSU fans jimbo? That game was Homecoming my Sr year and has left emotional damage. I hope to never see a game like that again.
