for a certain college football game this afternoon are purely coincidental.

Here's a thread to discuss the games. Enjoy.

I agree

The blonde is hot. The brunette, while having a nice bod, should consider braces, a new hair stylist and a board certified cosmetic surgeon.

It looks like those are bruises in there. Does that connote a certain amount of intensity in the horizontal mambo?

Dag, and now they air the preview to the segment about the beaver players not shaving and some dude says his girlfriend is retaliating by not shaving herself; ’she’s got armpit hair now…{giggle}’ Can’t defend those beavers now….

morning everyone

So how are we all cheering for today?

I haven’t decided if i want USC or OrSU in the rose bowl yet. I think i’m going to cheering for OrSU.

by platnumkid on Nov 29, 2008 10:50 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think it's obvious:

Oklahoma State over Oklahoma (not likely now that I saw a stat that this is the most lopsided of all the rivalry games; OU leads by like 79-16 or something ridiculous like that)
Auburn over Alabama
Florida State over Florida
Notre Dame over USC (Yeah, like that’s going to happen. Weiss is done. Guess you ain’t so hot when you ain’t got Tom Brady and you’re not taping the other teams practices and stealing plays).

I’m still holding out hope for playing January 8. I know I sound like a spoiled little child, and I definitely don’t want to go back to the dark years, but a Big Ten title doesn’t impress me as much as a national championship. I grew up rooting to be #1, not going to the Rose Bowl.

I really don’t know what to think of playing USC or Oregon State again. On the one hand, we should have an easier time with the Beavers, and to finish 12-1 and a top 5 finish would be just great. On the other hand, it would be great to play USC and hand them their asses. USC is good, but they ain’t that fucking great. Who have they beaten that’s of any consequence. Remember, the Fuckeyes were rotating QB’s and didn’t have Beanie Wells.

I agree with you

about cheering for us getting to the Nation Title. As for the Rose Bowl i’ll be cheering for OrSU. But not cuz it’ll be an easy win for us. I’ll be cheering for them cuz of how it will hopefully set up next year. With them forcing those Jerks from Columbus to play in the Cap1 bowl and bumping all the big 10 teams down a level we can score a really good bowl record and really turn the tide on this “the big 10 is down” talk.

by platnumkid on Nov 29, 2008 11:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The fact is,

an OrSU / PSU rematch is the biggest lose / lose for us since the F$U Orange Bowl. If we smoke them again, so what? If we win close, it appears we’ve taken a step back. If we get clipped, we suck, and the Big 10 blows. Those are the options, folks.

We absolutely need USC. Critically. Honestly, I don’t give a damn about any other Big Televen bowl results this year; those guys are on their own. I want us to bitch slap a national media darling full of 10-star recruits, and I want to do it in their own backyard with a national audience. I want to see them shoved around, jacked up, and run over. I want them crushed moving across the middle, growing alligator arms by the 2nd quarter, and running out of bounds to avoid yet another thunderous hit. I want utter domination. I want Tennessee redux. If we can’t win the MNC, I want to rain abject humiliation on these Golden Boy panty-girdles and their metrosexual coach.

I guess I want it all.

I like OrSU. They seem like nice folks. I want them to do well – just not at our expense. Quizz has 3 more years to go all Heisman on people in the Rose Bowl, while we’re busy playing for the MNC.

I want USC.

I'm half with you half not

First off, the Orange Bowl was a win. A big, huge-ass win. A win-win if you will. Pennsylvania descended on and overtook southern florida. We beat Bobby Bowden. We out-fanned the floridians in their own state. And we finished 12-1. A beautiful end to a beautiful season. Being there made it extra fun for me.

But I also like your take on douching the douchey trojans. If we play like we didn’t against Iowa and Indiana, the scenario you describe is viable. If we play like we did, well, it’d be a long day of national disrespect.

Pete, are you in the market for traveling to the Rose Bowl?

by jtothep on Nov 29, 2008 1:06 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Don't get wrong

The Orange Bowl was a nice win, especially as it came at Bowden’s expense. But coaching matchup aside, who among us was thrilled when F$U sorta backed into the ACC title and became our opponent? As they were ranked in the low 20’s, there was no way to impress anyone with less than a 50 point blowout, let alone a 3 OT squeaker. It wasn’t even a rematch with a team we already throttled. Yes, it was exciting to watch (mostly for PSU / F$U), but I don’t remember anyone feeling really good about it beforehand, except for the beating Bobby angle. While we did get a win, we didn’t get the respect we would have from beating another Top 5 team.

Another unbeaten season snatched away on a last second play sucks. This time I want the opportunity to play a statement game, which the Orange Bowl was not. I’d like nothing better than to be a 10 point dog, and win by 28. THAT is making a statement. Especially against the SoCal Condoms.

I want shock and awe. OrSU can’t provide that opportunity.

Good morning BSDers

I’ve been reading RUTS and BSD for the past couple years but haven’t commented. I wanted my first post though to say thank you to all of you guys who work so hard on this site. I’m not sure how else I would piss away my lunch breaks at work. Its a great site with great content.

Now to the OrSU v. Oregon – I know we all met some really cool OrSU fans when they came to happy valley and I think that’s cool. But in all honesty they are in the Pac-10 and I could care less about them this year or for years in the future. I’m sure there are nice people that root for Arizona too and I care equally less about them. I don’t understand how any Penn Stater isn’t rooting their butt off for Oregon tonight. USC would be the biggest test this PSU team could possibly face outside of maybe Florida. The fact that they don’t want to play us makes me want them even more. Maybe I’m crazy, but a new years day bowl against media darling USC just seems a lot more fun.

by NittanyAlum02 on Nov 29, 2008 11:07 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

You make a good point

Welcome to commentingLand. Best case I’ve heard yet for wanting to play USC: ‘biggest test’ we could possibly face. I like that perspective, vs, the national respect card. We’ve got a good team, had a good season, finished very strong, and we should want an opportunity to face the best test we can.

I buy that argument.

Also – if PSU lays wood to USC I can give the finger to every OSU fan I know that keeps congratulating me on our “share” of the Big Ten Title (not that I don’t already give these clowns the finger but it will just have more meaning).

I get a kick out of this

You’ve got to laugh at a straightfaced Lee Corso deadpanning “Closer than the experts think!” when he’s predicting games. He is the expert! Clown or no, the guy clearly gets the absurdity in college football and the fact that he eggs it on is awesome.

by gumbercules on Nov 29, 2008 12:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Gameday continues to be possibly the best pregame show for any sport. Corso plays his role (intentionally or not) perfectly, Herbstreit is a great football mind (how many insane upsets has he picked this year?) and Fowler leads the parade quite well. That show makes me happy to be a college football fan.

John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

Agreed

Desmond Howard leaves a little bit to be desired (tangent: it is hilarious that an Ohio State grad thoroughly out-analyzes a Michigan grad on a weekly basis on national television) but it is solid. Honestly, when they had Lebron James guest star, he was smart and hilarious and my opinion of the guy skyrocketed. I’d make him a regular contributor.

Mostly confirms my opinion

I can see an overstatement of the funny opinion — he was definitely more to the point. Fuzzy memories that I’m going to blame on alcohol. Solid analysis of a variety of games though. Also, we get a bonus “Closer than the experts think!” around 6:15 in the video!

by gumbercules on Nov 29, 2008 1:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

LOL!

Mostly refutes your opinion, in my opinion.
- went with no notes, and sounded like it
- picked Michigan over MSU, with no supportive reasoning (‘yeah, I know, but I’ma take Michigan, I’ma take Michigan’) {MSU 35-21}
- picked Ga Tech over UVA, citing Tech’s great receivers, which Herbie quickly scoffed at {UVA 24-17; Tech 100 yds passing}
- picked Fla State over VaTech (I’ma take florida state, I like they defense; they young, they active, I’ma take florida state) {FSU 30-20)
- picked Arizona over USC (‘well, I’ma go with the fortteyyfforty 41% amurrica’s givin; I’ma go with Arizona) {USC 17-10}
- picked LSU over UGA (‘man, I’ma go wif LSU, umm…that, I think that defensive line is, is unbelievable..but they’re very quick; I think Knowshon Moreno’s gonna get, he’s gonna get a lot of yards, but I think that defense is too quick, too fast) {UGA 52-38}

ok, I’m getting tired….anyway, you get the gist. I definitely take exception with both ‘smart’ and ‘solid analysis of a variety of games’ and didn’t think he was particularly funny either. Gumbercules, on the other hand—now he’s funny!

Hey, everybody gets an opinion

To be fair, nobody expected the USC game to even be close so it was a ballsy pick, and I think secretly that every Ohio State fan is rooting for Michigan just so the nation pays attention to their rivalry game. And no notes? That’s impressive that he didn’t just freeze out there if it’s true. Anyway, I’m just a little tired of shots of Desmond Howard chatting on his computer and grinning and saying inane things to me.

Can someone help me out?

Trying to figure out which of the 4 games on right now is going to be the “least” boring. I mean, I know USC-Clemson is usually good for one fight, but they usually wait until the end of the game for that one.

Other than that, we’re looking at UVA-VTech, Cincy-‘Cuse, and UGA-GTech. I’ll probably stick mostly to the UGA-GTech game in the hopes that an ACC team can blow yet another hole in an omg essss eeeee seeee team. (Thankfully, LSU has already been eaten by it’s own conference.)

Do these announcers (or the UGA fans) understand how intentional grounding works? Stafford wasn’t out of the pocket; Nesbitt was. My other issue with Stafford’s throw is that he never looked back towards the receiver – just chucked it out of bounds blindly (with a receiver close to the area).

haha, of course I'm still rooting for that

but it still doesn’t mean I feel dirty currently rooting for them. Of course I also fully expect those investigations, sanctions, and forfeits after the season is over and the National Championship game has been played.

Interesting question, though: what would they do if FSU wins this, Florida beats Alabama, and then FSU has to FF the game before the MNC game. How do they rectify that in the BCS formula?

Time for some good games

The big 10 loses out on weekends like this, it would be exciting if we could have a championship game (not necessarily good, just exciting). We could add Pitt or ND and break into 2 divisions with Michigan/ND in one and OSU/PSU in another. It would bring us respect, if we were going into a championship game this weekend it could potentially have pushed us towards the top 2 if we win. Just an interesting thought.

We just needed a couple players, a couple people to buy in to the fact and we were able to do it. --A.Q. Shipley

Assuming everything else was actually going to happen

They’d put PSU/ND and OSU/Michigan in the divisions, I would imagine

But if ND joined anything, it’d probably be the Big East- that’s what they are in other sports, and they could probably win the thing every year, even when they’re this bad.

They would never put OSU and Michigan in the same division

That would prohibit them from playing each other in the championship game and we all know (whether we admit it or not) that they are still the darlings of the big ten. I don’t know who’s shadow PSU would get stuck in. Also that is a pipe dream, ND will never join a conference as long as the tv contracts keep coming.

We are not normal. We are legends.

I've long felt

that is one of the things that would keep the Big 10 from scheduling a championship game, even if we do qualify.

Though I guess they could be in different divisions, but still be guaranteed to play each other every year as a rivalry game.

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 29, 2008 4:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The other day

I was listening to Rivals Radio on the way to work and they were debating if the Big Ten should play a championship game. Some moron actually said we shouldn’t because it’s not fair to make OSU and Michigan play their traditional rivalry game at the end of the year and then make them have to play again the following week. As if they are the only two teams that would ever qualify for the championship game. Unreal.

Isn't It Just Wrong...

That there’s no PSU game and we have to resort to the trash that is on Tv now?? Just kidding…I’m just sad there’s no PSU game this week and I’m jonesing for a real good game this Thanksgiving break..I miss the good ole days when Penn State-Pitt ruled the airwaves!!

Anyone remember?

The schools voted sometime this year to extend the Big Ten season by a week, with only Michigan and Ohio State voting against it for obvious reasons. When does that go into effect?

They ain’t that tough, but they are a CBS media darling. I guess CBS has the same strategy that Karl Rove had with Dumya: If you tell the same lie over and over again, eventually people will believe it’s true.

All things considered

This first round of games hasn’t been completely horrible. The two games remaining have turned into some seriously good football battles. UGA-GTech has been extremely fun to watch in the second half. And this KU-Mizzou battle gets better and better every possession. (Mostly thanks due to the fact that both teams plays defense as well as any other Big 12 team…)

by IcersGuy on Nov 29, 2008 3:41 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Fun? Maybe

I feel like I’m watching a playstation game in this GA-GT game. Neither one of these defenses can stop anything. It kind of takes something away for me.

by BSD on Nov 29, 2008 3:46 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That might be the better word...

Not necessarily the best all-around performances (apparently defense is more overrated around the nation than we realize), but they’ve been fun to watch where every possession has some significance.

Oh, and i’ll take any game where the SEC is unceremoniously returned to reality.

I'm in Michigan

I was debating just staying back in PA after the MSU game, but didn’t really want to take the time away from lab and the girl and the dog. Went with the girl to her grandparent’s cabin they have up around Cadillac, Michigan. This is an old-school log cabin with no running water, wood stoves and fireplaces for heat, but they do at least have electricity for lights & TV (only to watch Thanksgiving football, of course, especially since it is the only day of the year Lions fans can get excited about football). This year was much better than last year, when at night I was bundled in all my winter clothes, plus a sleeping bag, plus a few comforters, but unfortunately couldn’t cover my face (I like to breathe) and damn that was cold.

There are like 20 people that go there (well actually her parent’s cousins are there the previous night, and then her family is there for Thanksgiving night.) Mid-day on Thanksgiving Day they have a family vs family football game, which was pretty fun (I threw our team’s only TD, but also slipped in the snow on defense to give them their only TD. I also threw a beatiful pass that would have scored a TD and won the game on the last play of the game, but it got batted down…by a teenaged girl :-P )

I think this is my first live gameday thread I’ve been able to participate in all year! though I am sad there’s no PSU football game for me to go to :’(

how was warm SoCal for the holiday?

by TheMightyErik on Nov 29, 2008 4:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

well the game didn't feature a lot of rushing

which was kinda frustrating on one drive where we got to the “1 yard line” on our first play (each “drive” is just a set of 4 downs). I would have just run it in, but it is 2-hand touch (there are a bunch of little kids that play too), so that makes it a bit tougher. The other thing that made rushing tough for us (the other team actually did it a couple times) was that the teams were something like 15 people on their side to 7 on ours, so we only really ever had 2 people blocking their D-line that usually had about 7-10 people stacked in it.

Of course it wasn’t quite as uneven as it sounds, since there were about the same number of “adults” on both sides.

First Crabtree and now Harvin – going down with ankle issues. Limiting either can have a significant effect on these games.

Blah...

Florida is the most boring top 5 team to watch, for that reason. I think Penn State has as much team speed as they do and do more with it. Seems like everything is going to be either a Tebow Smash, something with Harvin or hitting their tight end.

I seriously think PSU’s D matches up well with them. And I think that Bama can limit them to 13 points.

Anyway, the Big Ten Network was showing its “best games of all time” and the game on now is a 1974 game between Ohio State and Michigan. I know..gag me! I am sick to my fucking stomach.

I was holding out hope that we could get to Miami, but with no upsets of any consequence today, the dream is over. I’m sorry, but the Rose Bowl is just another bowl. I guess if I sit back and think about the Lions not playing on New Year’s Day that that might snap me out of it. But damn, I like seeing a #1 in front of Penn State.

Now I’m pissed. At first I was ambivalent, but now I want Oregon State to lose. I want to play USC and jack them the fuck up all over the place. On their field.

And no, I haven’t been drinking all day. But I’m getting ready to start.

Rose Bowl.......

Is slowly becoming not just another bowl. I know you probably know this already, but the rest of the country is slowly becoming convinced that the Rose Bowl is a major player in there not being a playoff. Consquently, a lot of people could care less what happens in it.

I would love to see us play USC.

by ech2os on Nov 29, 2008 7:29 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you are absolutely correct

That’s why the biggest threat a playoff system could come with is to leave out the Rose Bowl and the teams in it. That would force the Pac and Big 10 to get on the Rose Bowl to make a playoff a reality

by TheMightyErik on Nov 29, 2008 7:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

heh, wouldn't that be great

the all the conferences (even non-BCS conferences) all agree to a new playoff format, and agree to allow the Big 10 and Pac 10 to keep their precious “granddaddy” bowl. See which game gets more viewers then. Heck, I’d be impressed if the Rose Bowl would even beat the semi-finals after a few years.

Wooo! Women's Volleyball!

Penn State girls swept Michigan tonight to finish the season undefeated, 32-0 (20-0). I also believe this is the first time that a team has not dropped a single set for the entire regular season. That is damn impressive!

I'm confused..

what would we gain in beating OrSU again. To me it seems like a no win situation. if we win no one will care cus we already killed them once. If we lose everyone will say that we werent as good as people thought. A shot at USC would be a true marquee game and give us a chance to really prove ourselves to all the haters. Am i missing something here?

by MeetMeAtTheCorner on Nov 29, 2008 7:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

nope, you summed it up pretty well

Only thing we like OrSt for is that their fans seem like a decent bunch, and it is nice seeing a non-perreninal power make it to these games every now and then…we just wish it wasn’t against us.

Too bad we can’t “give up” our Big-10 championship tiebreaker so that we could then take an at-large and face USC if it comes down to that.

by The JuggerNitt on Nov 29, 2008 7:34 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Depends on how the media wants to run with it

I think it’s been well documented that this Beaver team is playing much better than week 2. There’s also some stats out there how, in recent bowl game history, a rematch has been won more by the regular season loser. At least I think that’s what the stat was…

Also, there seems to be a lot of rumblings out of USC that a Rose Bowl appearance is a lose-lose for them. Which, even if we beat them, people can pull the “Well, USC just didn’t care so it wasn’t the real USC” card. Sure, we can tout a win over a top program, but will the media really decide to see it the same way? Just some food for thought…

by IcersGuy on Nov 29, 2008 7:40 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Doesn't really matter

Thanks to F$U and Auburn rolling over today the OMG ESS EEE CEE has a clear path to the title game against a Big 12 team and no one will give two shits about us beating USC as they have gotten zero run this year, like us. Who will really remember us beating a USC team? Or what if we go and lose or , even worse, we get hammered. You think we get no respect now? It’s a lose lose situation this year. Screw USC. I want an SEC or Big 12 team.

Even a close loss to USC would seem to hold more weight than another victory over Oregon State. At least we would be able to say we match up well with a good team. But of course in reality we will beat USC like they stole a fresh batch of cookies made by Sue Pa.

I didn’t get to see any of the games in Philly. But from what I’ve read and seen Talor Battle is sensational. The kid is a star plain and simple. Stanley Pringle has really heated up too, and when those two guys are on we can play with anyone. Those two guys are so good at pushing the tempo. They can slash to the hoop and create so much off of it. They are both good at finishing the drive, or they pop a short range jumper. They can dish off to a teammate. And they are both deadly from the arc. They create so many problems for other teams and they give us a ton of flexibility to work with.

What bothers me is our depth. We are basically playing with six or seven guys every night. As a result, Battle is playing a ton of minutes. We can’t be strong late in the season if he’s having to log 40 minutes every night. The rest of the offense needs a guy the can depend on to carry them when Battle is on the bench. Right now they look totally lost when he’s not out there. We desperately need Jeff Brooks, Cammeron Woodyard, or Chris Babb to start contributing heavily.
