It's all my fault
Mea Culpa
All year I had been true to all of my superstitions... every blasted one of them. Only blue for home games (white out exception of course), only white for away games. Lucky football present and never hitting the ground during the game.
But yesterday it all went a little wrong. I was out of town for work and I ended up wearing my BLUE 1986 championship shirt - what hubris - until I could get home right before the game. Then, in a move I will regret forever, I let my wife talk me into wearing an LSU shirt under my white 21 jersey. I went with it since they were playing Alabama and I figured it would be just like cheering for Penn State in another different kind of way. But the plain truth is that I overlooked Iowa. Just like in 1999 when I bought tickets in the Minnesota section for THAT GAME.
Let my guard down... pure and simple.
I'm sitting here over 12 hours later still feeling a little dead inside.
Someone please tell me its not my fault. Tell me the football gods didn't decide to visit my house and inspect my superstition levy. Tell me it was strange playcalling in bad weather. Tell me it was uncharacteristics drops on the few catchable balls. Tell me it was a doppleganger defense that for 3 drives made a craptastic loser into everybody's all american.
Just please... somebody tell me it wasn't my fault.

It wasn't your fault
It was strange playcalling, uncharacteristic drops, and bad defense.
Feel better?

It wasn't your fault
There’s no such thing as a “jinx”…just like there’s not such thing as magic, santa claus, or a college football playoff.
I feel horrible as well, but to blame it on yourself isn’t fair. DC played his worst game of the year and settling for 3 field goals proved to be the difference in the game.

If it was anyone's fault
It’s Barry friggin Switzer.
2 weeks ago he says: “Texas is going undefeated, and going to the national championship”
Next week Texas loses. The next day Barry says “Penn State is going undefeated”.
As soon as he said that I thought he jinxed us — Barry Switzer is obviously some kind of witch. Whoever he says is going undefeated this week is doomed.

That would rely on the false assumption
that Switzer has testicles. She in fact does not.

You can also blame
Herbstreit and a guy at the Daily Collegian who wrote that the game was most certainly not a trap game.
Oh, and Mark May. Just because.

I used to be very superstitious about Penn State
I tried to get away from that this year. I used to wear the same color s on gameday, same shirt, hat. I shaved before every game no matter what. I had to listen to the Alama Mater and Fight Song before every game. I used to really get carried away. I went one year eating ham and swiss on rye before home games and 2 hotdogs with mustard for away games. ( Joepa’s ritual) I am in my seat before the blue band comes out at home games. I never leave home to watch Penn State when they are on the road. I was in Florida for Michigan 05. ( shame on me). I have turned to having faith. I still have faith 9-1 is a great year. What is meant to be will happen. 11-1 will happen. A season to remember. Count on it. (This blog is helping me deal with this) Thanks Mike

Good post, bro
I know how you guys feel. Yesterday was the first day I broke out my new Royster/JCap jersey and in the 4th I ran back to the room and slammed my old #12 back on thinking that the jersey could be the problem. What an idiot, huh? Funny how sports make you do these dumbass things but in the end I just chalked it up to a poor showing and will move on. And, to echo your comment, all of you guys and gals here at BSD do wonders for me, too. Thank you ALL!

I feel your pain...
I had on my PSU Golf shirt that seemed to be working all year… I was sort of distracted from my normal seat on the couch due to some family being in town. During Iowa’s last drive I went back to old faithful. My Penn State Football Year 2000 (which worked great in ’05) and my number 32 Ki-Jana Carter jersey… I have a couple of other shirts which I was sure would help and I held them just in case. All for nothing….
Oh, I also hung a new PSU flag in my garage and bought tickets for the MNC game this past week….
After writing this I know I have a problem but it is good to know that there others who have the same. Oh well… now to sell 2 tickets :)

I know it felt therapeutic
To throw my Caps shirt on over my 2005 Big Ten Championship shirt and go have dinner in the Phone Booth’s Acela club and watch the Caps put the beat on the Rangers sat night. And yeah….I did get to wondering when the last time I had that big ten shirt on was….

NO, It was MY fault....
A buddy of mine from PSU came into NYC on Saturday and wanted to get together for the game. So the place that seemed the most convenient to where he was, was the big PSU Bar in NYC, Tonic East.
So I met him there, and as soon as I stepped in the door I got a weird feeling and he had already bought us a round of beers, and then I realized I’ve been to that bar twice to watch games, and both times we lost. (Notre Dame ’06, Michigan ’07)
I told him as soon as he handed me the beer, and he asked what we should do, and I said well we should at least finish this round before we go. So we drank our beers and left and went to the bar directly next to it, which was much less crowded and had the sound on. But it was too late, the damage was done and we didn’t move far enough away.
I will never set foot in that Bar again, or be anywhere within a 20 block radius on game day.

Thanks Guys
I’m glad that I’m not the only one who puts undue pressure on himself. This little post has been kind of like therapy for me and I feel much better.

Glad there were others
I thought it was my fault. Every other superstition was taken care of, except I miscalculated the bus times getting to my friends house where I would watch the game. Missed the first 1:24 of the game, and the rest is history. The first and only minute of the season I didn’t watch, and this happens. Hopefully there are nice bars in Pasadena for New Years celebrations…

Me Too
My friend finally got that Florida Residents only face value deal for MNC tickets last week on Thursday morning…
I was so excited to be playing again this weekend after 2 weeks off. For almost 8 years I regretted not knowing all the words to the Hail to the Lion or our Fight Song. On Friday night I sat down by myself and spent a couple of hours learning the words, as well as learning to play the melodies on the piano and memorizing the notes.
On Saturday I brought my pom pom from one of the games to my parents house and had a little sing along.
I’m so sorry for the program, the players, JoePa, and all of us believers. But I would very, very much hope and look forward to going to a Rose Bowl.
