I disagree

that beating LSU on the road in overtime is more impressive than beating Oklahoma State at home by a million points. The computers, who don’t even consider the respective margins of victory of those games, agree, as they moved Texas Tech ahead of Alabama.

The human voters, I imagine, kept Alabama on top for the irrational reason that Alabama was above Tech last week. Since your last poll had Tech above Alabama, my question is what happened this week to convince you that Tech was worse than Alabama? Because if we were better a couple days ago, we’re certainly better after what we — Texas Tech — just did to Oklahoma State (who you still have a high opinion of, I’d add).

Go register. Or else.

Florida is a Fraud

I feel they should be at the end of the line for 1 loss teams.

Penn State-Lost AT Iowa
Texas-Lost AT Tech
Oklahoma-lost to Texas
USC-lost AT Oregon State

Florida?-Lost AT HOME to Ole Miss. Sorry. I don’t see a win on that schedule that impresses me. I’m rooting for Alabama in the worst way #1 for my own sanity, knowing we wouldn’t have made the National Championship anyway, and #2 because Florida is a fraud.

Now, an interesting question. Say Florida beats Bama in the SEC title, and Texas and TTU run the table. What happens? Texas’s loss will be to #1 Texas Tech. Florida’s will be to Ole Miss at home. Both will have victories over former #1s in their pocket.

There should be a rematch.

Tech at the top

Texas Tech has two wins that are more impressive than Alabama’s best victory. Tech is the flavor of the week for a second week in a row, which should propel them to #1.

by gcdyersb on Nov 9, 2008 10:23 PM EST reply actions

I disagree almost completely with the top end (which is the only part I feel even remotely confident about).

1) Texas Tech’s second-best win is about even with Alabama’s best (maybe better, since Georgia came back and made things interesting in the second half, while OkSt just got run over). On top of that, I don’t see anything that could have convinced you to move Alabama in front when you already had Tech at the top before this week.
2) Texas should be #3. I’m not sure this is even close. They’ve beaten three teams in your top 15 … and did it in consecutive weeks. Florida has beaten one (and I’m starting to think Georgia is overrated, seeing as how they got destroyed by Florida and had to make a huge comeback just to make things look respectable against Alabama). USC has beaten one. Texas’s loss is to your #2 on the final play. USC lost to a team that is barely in the top 25. Florida lost to a team that’s not even close to being ranked (and did it at home). Yes, Florida and USC have been impressive in beating the snot out of their conference’s bottom-feeders; Texas has beaten up on top teams in the meantime, and they clearly deserve to be ranked ahead of both.

Again

A late loss is much worse than an early loss. Our loss to Iowa is just as bad as Florida’s loss to Ole Miss, the only difference is that game happened much earlier in the season. It does not matter that we lost on the road, and they lost at home. We we supposed to trample Iowa and didnt. I agree with these standings. Florida is a very good football team and like the chances of seeing them play Texas Tech for the NC. But first, the Texas Tech vs Oklahoma game will be comparable to the Michigan Ohio State game of a few years back.

Bottom line, we did not take care of business and should not be whining about where our one loss stands compared to other one loss teams, or else you begin to create a new problem to the bcs or potential future playoff………..“well my one loss team should be the 8th playoff team, not theirs” It never ends.

What about Utah? I like the idea of unbeatens being 1, 2 and 3. I’d like to see Utah attempt to pull and Boise State over Oklahoma ish type of game. Just because strength of schedules might be different, doesn’t mean you can count other unbeaten teams out of the picture.

by MrBrianPSU on Nov 10, 2008 12:13 AM EST reply actions

Timing of the loss shouldn't matter (much)

I fail to see any logic in this widely-held assumption that losing late should hurt you more than losing early. You can argue that it’s because the team has come together and improved during the season, but there are two problems with that:

1) Sometimes it’s a by-product of schedule rather than actual improvement. Why should you be penalized more because the scheduling gods gave you Ohio State (hypothetically) in November instead of late September?
2) It undermines the whole “season is a playoff” argument for the BCS: if every week is supposed to matter, then every week has to count the same. (Mind you, I’m all in favor of undermining the BCS. But as long as we have it, we’d better do something that makes sense with it.)

by SpartanDan on Nov 10, 2008 1:44 AM EST up reply actions

I agree

I totally agree that it shouldnt matter, but it does. Thus explaining why teams like Florida, have been able to move up the rankings. PSU will probably move into the top 5 once the season comes to an end, assuming a wide range of factors will occur.

by MrBrianPSU on Nov 10, 2008 5:04 AM EST up reply actions

Okie State should be above Penn State.

Their 2 losses are better than PSU’s one loss to IOWA, and their Win is better than PSU’s best as well.

I think we will give them a run.

The profile on UF’s last defeats w/ a healthy Tebow:

Hold the ball for at least 32 minutes. (FSU is averaging over 33 minutes I believe)

Do not allow UF more than 11 possessions. (Again, hold the ball)

Play excellent special teams (we have front runner for Groza; Graham Gano 17 for last 17 since injury, 6 of 50+, and #1 kick returner in nation in Olympian Michael Ray Garvin.)

Have a special edge rusher (Everette Brown 3 sacks in each of last 3 games, NFL top 15 lock as a jr, 6’4 260).

Essentially, make UF hit low % high yield passes by denying the run, and give them limited possessions. Don’t allow them to grind out the variance.

Pray.

Missouri > Ohio State?

I don’t think so. The losses are to better teams, but the win is equal at best and they have more losses.

Don't agree with that

Maybe their two losses are more forgiveable than Penn State’s one loss, but the Cowboys don’t have a quality win on their schedule. Penn State has at least two.

by BSD on Nov 10, 2008 8:43 AM EST up reply actions

Stand corrected

They have the Missouri win, but that’s it. I don’t think that is as impressive as Penn State’s win over Ohio State.

#7 USC: 17 #21 Cal: 3

Not that it matters anymore, but here’s the AP’s first line of the article:

LOS ANGELES (AP) -No. 7 Southern California put on another dominant display of bone-jarring defense.

Sounds sexy, doesn’t it?

Another article, this time from Rivals:

In that four-game run, high-powered Arizona scored just 10 points—and that TD allowed came on a 15-yard drive following a lost fumble.

The Wildcats are high powered. Great for USC!

by Mr. Rosewater on Nov 10, 2008 2:15 AM EST reply actions

So what I'm hearing is

The top five should look like this

1. Texas Tech
2. Alabama
3. Texas
4. USC
5. Florida

Is this the general consensus?

by BSD on Nov 10, 2008 8:47 AM EST reply actions

I'd drop USC

If, for nothing else, the fact that they aren’t even a lock to win their own conference, unless I’m confused. I’d put Oklahoma (better to lose to TX than OrSt), and possibly Florida ahead of them. And I hate that that would put three BigXII teams in the top five. Ugh.

Try again

So the top seven should be

1. Tech
2. Alabama
3. Texas
4. Florida
5. Oklahoma
6. USC
7. PSU

Look about right?

based on transitive property as well as winning games more impressively.

You know, the Big 10

gets hammered for Ohio State’s performances, why doesn’t the Big 12 get hammered for Oklahoma’s craptastic 48-28 loss to WVU last year? And to Boise St. the year before that? Penn St. shouldn’t be any lower than 5, and Florida belongs at the back of the line of the one-loss teams, their one loss is worse than anyone else’s one loss.

by Joe 96alum on Nov 10, 2008 12:36 PM EST reply actions

Err, this is a Big Ten blog, right?

So why is Georgia, a team that has allowed 38 or more points four times in the SEC, not the Big 12 south, ahead of Ohio State? Heck, why are they in the top 15?

by drothgery on Nov 10, 2008 1:38 PM EST reply actions

USC Perception

So let me get this straight? USC wins a low-scoring game against a barely-ranked Cal team, AT HOME, and the media reaction is this:

LOS ANGELES (AP) -No. 7 Southern California put on another dominant display of bone-jarring defense.

Penn State wins a low-scoring game against a top-10 Ohio St. team, ON THE ROAD, and the media impression after the game is that we are actually a worse team than previously thought because the game was not a shootout.

If the media only likes offense, as shown by the love affair for the Big 12, why isn’t USC held to the same standard? They should have dropped 3-4 spots in the polls from this Cal game, by the experts standards.

Defense Only Counts

When you’re a national power in the recruiting rankings or in the SEC. Otherwise you’re just playing weak offenses.

Additionally, offense only counts when you’re in the Big 12 or SEC. Otherwise you’re just playing bad defenses.
