Question on the Rose Bowl?
I know its hard, but we need to move past Saturday. That one hurt like Minnesota in '97 and Michigan in '05. I didn't even want to talk to anyone Saturday night (which is exactly how I probably felt after those 2 games too.)
So, say PSU wins out, and Oregon State wins out. Oregon State would win the PAC-10 with only one conference loss.
Would the Rose Bowl really want an Oregon State vs. Penn State rematch? Does the Rose have to take the Big Ten/Pac 10 champions with their pick? If that is the matchup, are the PSU fans really going to travel for a rematch of that game?
I'd prefer if they past on us, we got a Fiesta Bowl bid with Alabama or Texas as far as good game to watch or attend. Is this even possible? If not, just another reason the BCS sucks. Just look at the matchup the Orange Bowl could end up with......UNC vs. Boise State!!

There is a rule where
a bowl can pick out of order every so many years to get a better matchup type of thing. I am hoping that this doesn’t happen where we match up against Pitt……

Wow
They really protect the Rose Bowl in this thing. No wonder we will never have a playoff.

It says toward the bottom that you can move matchups around but not the Rose Bowl.

Unfortunately
If Oregon St. wins the Pac 10 and Penn State wins the Big Ten we’re going to get a rematch. The Rose Bowl is obligated to take the champs of each league, and they cherish the tradition of the annual matchup. They cherish it so much they took an overmatched Illinois team last year just to preserve the Big Ten-Pac 10 matchup.
It won’t be a sexy game, but the Rose Bowl isn’t going to jeopardize their relationship with the two leagues.

Guys, head over to Buildingthedam.com for a full report
It appears the amongst the Rose Bowl guidelines, they would not be obligated to take either Penn State or Oregon State. It appears that “if the teams have played each other the same year, they can opt for another team” which would likely be USC. HOWEVER, it also appears that the team that gets left out still gets their BCS tie-in virtue of being conference champ. Therefore, if the RB wanted a SC-PSU matchup, then Oregon State would likely move over to the Fiesta Bowl.
That being said, I don’t think that SC would prefer a Rose Bowl to the Fiesta Bowl this year. Playing a Big 10 team does nothing for USC’s respect-meter nationally. That is taking nothing away from Penn St and what they have accomplished this year. But if SC wins, then it’s just beating another Big 10 school. If they lose, then it’s because they are “weak.” It’s the same thing with you guys playing us. It’s a no-win situation for you. Again, this isn’t to insult PSU or the Big 10. You guys have the same struggles the Pac 10 does with people looking at us as inferior competition. USC beating a Big 12 school in the Fiesta Bowl would go a long way to regaining some respect for not only them but the Pac 10 as a whole. I think either way, Penn State or USC gets screwed in the end.

I thought the same thing
but it simply is not true. The Rose Bowl, by their own insistance, is stuck with the Big 10 and Pac 10 champs unless one/both of those teams plays for the MNC.
Directly from the BCS website.
The pairings may not be altered by removing the Big 10 Champion or Pac-10 champion from the Rose Bowl.

Crazy, guess we'll have to wait to see what happens
IF, and that is a huge IF, both teams win out and play for the Rose Bowl, it will be the party of the century for both schools. There is no group of fans I’d rather tailgate with than PSU fans.

while I agree that I'd rather party with the Beavers
and this isn’t to say anything about the quality of their team, but playing against them is a lose-lose for Penn State, unless we beat them by as much or more than we did last time, which is a) unlikely, and b) not something I want to see our team do to a team I’ve found myself rooting for lately

Yeah I mentioned that somewhere here
It’s a lose-lose for Penn State, just like SC playing Penn State is a lose-lose for them.

well, USC playing Penn State isn't so much a lose-lose
it is USC playing the Big 10 is a lose-lose for them, but unless you guys (Oregon State) can win out, then that’s exactly who they’ll be playing. If it isn’t us, then it will be Ohio State (unless they lose to Illinois and/or Michigan…which probably won’t happen).
USC’s (and MSU’s…sorta) best case scenario would have been for Penn State to win out, but lose to MSU, who would then have gone to the Rose Bowl. USC would have probably made short work of them (hence why it might not of actually been that great of a thing for MSU).
I’ve actually been a bit amused at the MSU people here (where I go to grad school). A bunch of them apparently weren’t actually aware of the situation, and were rooting against Penn State in the Iowa game. I just laughed at them and said, “yup, and with Penn State’s loss, you guys now have pretty much no chance of going to the Rose Bowl, even if you do beat us, since before you had the 3-way tie breaker, but now you’ll lose the 2-way head to head tie breaker with OSU”. That pretty much shuts them up and their huge grins turn into a confused look and a bit of an “oh man, that sucks” expression.

Go Beavers I guess?
I don’t know who I’d rather play, USC or Oregon St.
Beating USC in the rose bowl would be pretty satisfying.
I'm hoping for USC
I would ordinarily want an underdog like OSU to win the Pac 10, but a rematch in a bowl vs. a team we already beat would be terrible for PSU.
PSU/USC sounds good. It would be a true test for both teams.

Like Joe Paterno always says, if you can’t get up for the big games, you probably shouldn’t go to Penn State. We shouldn’t fear playing anyone. I would rather lose to USC by one point than beat Oregon State by 30.

I don't understand all this Rose Bowl talk
Has the team received its official Rose Bowl invite yet? I didn’t think so.
Here’s an idea, let’s worry about Indiana and MSU first, and the bowl BS later. Seems like dejavu…only this time with the Rose Bowl. If we can’t beat MSU, then we can forget about the Rose Bowl, USC / OrSt, all that. We could very well end up in the Capital One or even Outback bowl.
Let’s worry about the task at hand, which for now is Indiana. Talking about the Rose Bowl after a loss to a mediocre team just seems foolish to me.
I bleed Blue and White.
We're fans...
As its been stated before, we’re allowed to get ahead of ourselves. Sure, it only leads for more let down, but thats our own problem.
We aren’t the team or coaching staff, so why focus on Indiana?
You really want to break down the Indiana defense that just gave up 55 points to Wisconsin on Saturday?
Maybe dissect that potent Indiana passing attack? Give some key points to what the Hoosiers will need to do to escape Happy Valley with a win?
Blah. Rose Bowl talk is wayyyyy more fun.
Plus Sparty sucks. If we can’t beat Michigan State at home, then who even wants to talk about the Capital One or Outback Bowl?
Penn State losses on the road to teams it shouldn’t all the time. Penn State never losses at home to teams it should beat.
This team is right where reasonable minds could have expected it to be. Lets talk Rose Bowl!!
Oregon State needs to loose. The Big 10/Pac 10 champs are playing each other, there is no way around it, and right now, Oregon State is in the driver’s seat. And thats not good for anyone…except for them because they get a chance to ‘totally redeem themselves’! (think Dumb and Dumber moped)

I'm with you Buggy
Let’s talk Indiana. And mean it.
Joe talked Iowa. The players talked Iowa. But were the coaches or the players actually prepared against Iowa? Were they prepared enough to discard the building pressure and singularly focus on executing against Iowa?
pax et amor
Here's the biggest question
The seniors on this team (D Will, etc.) have been crushed by this loss — they have almost nothing left to play for. The NC was their goal, and in 4 years we came tantalizingly close twice, but never quite pulled it together.
This Sat. game against Indiana we are going to come out looking our worst all season — I guarantee you Clark will play his worst half of football in the first half. A noon game after a crushing loss is the recipe for underachieving.
Will we see Devlin? Will Clark pull it together in the second half?
I don’t think Indiana can beat our 2nd string, but let’s be honest here — this loss crushed the spirit of this team. I wonder if we can pick ourselves up off the floor and salvage this season.
dude...
remember how we responded to the michigan loss in ’05? Mrob sunk like 28 points on Illinois in the first quarter. Dont be too cynical just yet
You find out life's this game of inches. And so is football.

USC
We want USC. We don’t want Oregon State. We want to prove to the talking heads that we belong. Beating USC will put a larger feather in our hat, help with recruiting, and show that we can beat a “better” team.
Our Seniors have something to play for…its called pride. DWill wants to leave this place better then he found it and i really think he has. A lot has happened in the past 4 seasons. We have come a long way from the down times during the early 2000’s.
Let’s take care of Indiana and Michigan State….then let’s talk Rose Bowl….I don’t want to end up in the Alamo Bowl or the Capital One Bowl….
PSU Softball
All due respect to Oregon State fans
Who have been nothing but gracious and supportive since we played them in September, we wish the best for you, and would ordinarily want you to win the Pac 10, but a rematch just wouldnt be as sexy as a date with USC
Agreed
We understand nobody wants a PSU-Oregon State rematch, just like nobody wants a USC-Ohio State rematch
We know where we are as a program. WE ARE (not) Penn State, or USC, and we understand what sexy is. Alabama-PSU is a lot sexier than Alabama-Texas Tech, but it is what it is I guess.

I hate myself for going down this road...
And it’s not likely but, say Penn State wins out, and somehow USC loses a game and Missouri wins the Big 12 championship game. That puts the SEC champ at #1 in the BCS. Who would land at #2? The choices are 1-loss Big Ten champ PSU, a 2-loss champ from every other BCS conference, a 1-loss Big 12 South team that didn’t win it’s division, or maybe an undefeated champ from a non-BCS conference. Since the tweak of the BCS rules putting 2/3 of the power in the hands of voters, they have made it clear that they feel a team that doesn’t win its conference doesn’t deserve to play for the NC. And as much as the country doesn’t want to see a Big Ten team play an SEC team in the NC, they would want a “BCS-buster” even less. We can thank Georgia whooping Hawaii last year for that.
Don’t misunderstand me, at this point, we need to focus on the tasks at hand, and the Rose Bowl is always a worthwile destination. If we get to play in it, and beat a worthy opponent (and that means USC), the season is a success. My point is a shot at the NC is only as far-fetched as a USC loss and a Missouri win.
Don't hate yourself
Everyone is a little down right now, but once (if?) we get over this loss, I’m sure most of us will probably be looking into the possibilities of our MNC chances. College football is a crazy game and any team can beat any other team on any given Saturday. Just ask Michigan. I think our NC chances are pretty slim at this point, but it is fun to see what needs to happen for us to get there. Plus it gives you someone to root for/against these last few weeks.
Just don't forget
That tOSU thought they were done after losing game #10 to Illinois last year….and they ended up being the first team in and waiting to see who they were going to play.
That being said, yes, this year is much different with more solid teams up front. But its not as far fetched as people might think, and the standard that was set by the voters being unwilling to put a team in the title game that didn’t win their conference, much less their conference division, only stands to help us. By that thinking:
Florida loses to South Carolina or @ FSU and knocks themselves out, but beats Alabama in the OMG ESS-EEE-CEE!!! title game. If they can lose to Ole Miss, they can lose to the ol’ ball coach or Bobby.
Oklahoma beats Texas Tech, but then loses to Oklahoma State on the road (very possible)
Texas won’t likely slip up in the regular season, but head-scratcher upsets happen in Big XII title games. (see: Kansas State on both sides of the coin, Texas, Oklahoma, the list goes on)
USC either A) doesn’t win the Pac-10 B) somehow gets beat by Stanford/holier than thou/UCLA. Not very likely, but crazier things have happened, and if USC’s defense has one bad day (Oregon St pushed them around at will), their offense hasn’t shown much of a capability to cover their asses. USC would be 6-3 right now if the defense was even “very good.” Just keep that in mind.
We could be left with Penn State-Big Ten Champs, Oregon St-Pac 10 champs, Missouri-Big XII champs, and a 2-loss Florida as SEC champs. Either Oklahoma/Texas isn’t even going to win its division of the Big XII, Texas Tech won’t play in the Big XII title game if they lose to Oklahoma. Sound as impossible for PSU yet? Not so much with that scenario. I’m not saying its going to happen, but it was impossible West Virginia was going to lose to Pitt last year.
lol
