At this point, I should apologize to those e-mailers from Penn State, who were outraged when I included the Nittany Lions in a list of slow teams from the Midwest.
I was wrong. They're not really from the Midwest.
Oh snap, Plaschke!
This is shaping up to be the best on-paper matchup other than the yet to be determined MNC game. Two teams that play great defense and score points. A coach in the middle of one of the best runs ever and a coach at the end of the best career ever. You would think that, instead of writing stories that sound just like the thousands that have been written since the now two year old OSU-Florida game, journalists would jump at the chance to put out new material. But keep blaming the death of newspapers on the internet.

um
They could be the best team in the country, yet for a third consecutive January, they won’t even be allowed to leave town to prove it.
If I’m not mistaken, for a third consecutive year they did leave town and proved where they belonged.
2006 @ OrSt – L – 33-31
2007 @ Oregon – L – 24-17 (and let’s not forget, Stanford @ home – L – 24-23)
2008 @ OrSt – L – 27 – 21
But obviously they should have won those games (let’s not point out that Penn State should have won @ Iowa) and all of a sudden USC is too good to play against PSU.

Fire Joe Morgan:
Reading a Plaschke column is like being in one of those cartoons where a dog watches a tennis match and its head bobs back and forth as the ball caroms left and right. It’s exactly like that, except you get a lot more misinformation.
I will not click on the link.

Ah screw him
Any loudmouth douchenozzle that appears on Around the Horn, where you need to scream to be heard over the other douchenozzles, doesn’t deserve an angry email from me. I could pick that column apart but it really isn’t worth the effort.
As a guy I know once said, “I don’t need to tell that guy he’s a jagoff. He knows he’s a jagoff”.

Plaschke
And anybody who has ever seen a couple episodes of AtH knows he’s the dumbest guy on there, even worse than Woody. Personally, if Plaschke says we’re going to lose, I’m thinking PSU is going to win, BIG

Typical
This is why I hate USC. Their network of bandwagoneers could care less about results on the field. Leinert proclaimed USC the better team immediately AFTER losing to Texas. Carroll cried over the BCS AFTER losing to Oregon State.
What made USC great at the beginning of its run was the hunger of the players and coaches. Palmer, Bush, White, they all played to prove they deserved respect. Each successive iteration of players has felt increasingly entitled the the mantle of greatest college football team ever of the season.
There is no question that USC has more talent. The question is whether they are motivated enough. The downfall of all of these dynastic teams is that recruits show up for glory and an NFL paycheck. It happened with F$U and Miami. It’s only a question of when it happens to USC. If Carroll and his players don’t get their heads on right, less talented players like Shipley and Norwood who are playing for pride and just a shot at making an NFL roster will beat them.

Shipley?
Less talented? He’ll be an NFL center for 10 years.
Just sayin’.
by The Mess on Dec 1, 2008 7:22 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't doubt that
But I have a feeling Shipley won’t grade out as first day draft pick at the combines. Scout.com basically doesn’t rate him. NFL Draft Scout puts him as a 7th round pick. He’s athletic, but not a freakish talent like the NFL drools over.
Shipley is the kind of lineman who will be drafted late, then earn himself a starting position. But he’s not one of those golden 5* guys that USC stockpiles and ends up being drafted on the first day despite underachieving.

wow... sucks for AQ
I really thought he would be at least a round 2-3 guy… That’s disappointing to see they don’t give him more credit

USC
the University of Spoiled Children in a city already full of them. It will be difficult for Pete to motivate his team after the man-children listen to a month of Plaschke-esque bleating.

Defensive Prognostication?
I read the article and on the second page one of the USC linebackers said that they knew ahead of time everything that ND wasgoing to throw at them offensively. They said the same thing after the tOSU blowout.
I hope and pray that we unleash the full completment of the Spread HD on these guys. I think they’re defense is good, but I don’t think they’ve been challenged.

I think that guy is full of shit also
Count me among the group that doesn’t believe in the whole “we knew what was coming” stuff. I understand some offenses are more complex than others, so to some degree this has merit, but I just don’t believe a defense can know what’s coming at them before the snap. What could they have to go on? The formation? Some other, more subtle tell? I just think USC’s defense was way too fast and way too physical for Notre Dame, who despite the pre-game scuffle, didn’t really want to be there….

How could you know
everything ND was going to throw at you? Fat Charlie is an offensive genius… just ask him!

I totally forgot that we’d have Bill Plaschke to bat around like a bearded Massengill piƱata for the next few weeks.
This makes life worth living.

I am so happy we have the new media.
The old media really sucked and I’m glad it’s dying. With the internet the average person can be heard. I can imagine how much that must piss off the propaganda machine, makes me feel all warm inside.
This blog is a great example of how much better off we are with the new media vs. the old.

Possibly the most arrogant move in the history of college football...
This is impossibly stupid and arrogant:

People are overplaying this
Nuehisel and Carroll discussed this on the Dave Dameshek show on ESPN radio in LA ealier this season. Dameshek really wanted it and they both didn’t have any problems. Rick will probably call a timout at the begining of each half to even it out.
by whiteoutonly on Dec 2, 2008 3:38 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Could UCLA decline the penalty?
If so, problem solved.
by Cairo on Dec 2, 2008 3:54 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought it was the utmost in arrogance
until I heard that UCLA plans to call a timeout at the start of each half. I mean, it pretty much IS a homegame for USC…
BTW, it’s bad enough that the rose bowl is 15 miles away from LA coliseum. BUT, the trojans actually play in the rose bowl this week! I cannot believe it. They have every advantage, they don’t want to play us, they think we’re below them. How does PSU wind up in these situations? It’s just so funny how you are what you are. WE ARE… downtrodden and disrespected. I love it.
