The Heisman Trophy
"The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award (often known simply as the Heisman Trophy or The Heisman), named after the former college football coach John Heisman, is awarded annually by the Downtown Athletic Club of New York City to the most outstanding player in collegiate football."
Well that explains why Colt Brennan won it last year, I mean the guy set records. Oh, he didn't win? Huh.
Well at least it explains why Graham Harrell is being considered this year. 41 TD's and 72% completion, seems pretty "outstanding" to me. Oh wait. He'll be watching from home.
AT LEAST the voters will be able to choose from a diverse group of candidates. Shonn Greene, best RB in the country, 100+ yards in every game. He should have a good shot. Jeremy Maclin had 95 catches, another 250 yards rushing, AND played a key role in the return game. I'm sure his prospects of winning are pretty legit, right? How about Andre Smith, arguably the best OT in the country?
And surely the defensive players will get their due, right? Aaron Maybin, Brian Arakpo, Terrence Cody, Malcolm Jenkins, Rey Maualuga...all great players who could be declared "most outstanding" in the country. And "most outstanding" is what is being rewarded, correct?
Oh wait. No. That's not it at all. Because none of these players satisfy both the two most important qualification to win the Heisman Trophy:
1) Are you a quarterback?
2) Is your team in the Top 3?
Because you see then, and only then, can you be considered "truly outstanding." It's just how the system works.
Satire aside, the Heisman Trophy is as mythical as an undisputed National Championship these days. It's a complete bastardization of what it used to be. I'm half convinced that the only reason this award exists anymore is so that Jason White and Eric Crouch can meet up and discuss the merits of "paper versus plastic" for bagging groceries.
I will not be tuning in to watch the Heisman Award ceremony, and I encourage others to do the same. I offer my congratulations to whoever wins it, with the lone caveat being that, lamentably, it was never a fair competition to begin with. So congrats and enjoy the bronze statue. Just know that it's worth nothing more than what the pawn shop is willing to pay ya for it.

Right on
I also hate what this award has become recently. It’s like if you leave anything up to the sportswriters they will groupthink their way to some dumb conclusion before the season. And I don’t even mind 2 of the 3 candidates, I think Tebow and McCoy are legit and indeed “outstanding.” I just think that if you put Graham Harrell on Oklahoma’s roster, and Sam Bradford on TTU’s, that Harrell would have had the thing wrapped up a month ago. And what about Crabtree?? He is as talented a receiver as we’ve seen in college football, and his numbers reflect that, but no shot at the award. I think they should do away with the Heisman as they vote on it now, and just hand out awards by position.
POLITICS
That’s all it is. College Football has become worse than our Government. I’m becoming jaded and would be 100% if it were not for ZUG.
