Rose Bowl travel / tickets / tailgate plans (re-linked)!!!
Hey BSD nation! We are heading to Pasadena to meet USC (not the one in South Carolina) in the Rose Bowl on January 1st!
Some of us have already purchased tickets and this would be a good spot to throw some ideas around for those who still need them or to get some good ideas for the BSD nation tailgate, t-shirts, and / or travel.
For a view of the field from the different Rose Bowl sections see this site http://www.tickets.ucla.edu/map/rosebowl.html . Our sideline will be the 13-24 section, or the bottom sections on that map.

FYI...
I am working on some pricing with my local t-shirt guy but have no slogan ideas of my own (see http://www.blackshoediaries.com/2008/12/11/690130/we-need-a-t-shirt-design) .
As my ticket, I braced myself and ate up a $300 tic from StubHub and will be in section 21L row 35.

Should I go?
So I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that I wouldn’t be going to the Rose Bowl. My wife (she’s hot) and I are going to Europe next summer and really need to save the money, especially since I’ve been in grad school the last two years. For us to go was just getting to be too much.
But then yesterday my wife told me I should just go. I have friends with a hotel room that I wouldn’t have to pay for, and I’ll find out Monday if I can get a ticket for $157. If not, Stub Hub has singles for about $200-220.
Negatives:
A. It’s a lot of freaking travel for basically two days (I’d probably go from the 31st to the 2nd). I’d have to drive to DC/Philly/Bmore from State College to fly. The cheapest I’ve seen is out of Dulles. I wouldn’t mind this too much but last weekend I made that drive and it took 8 hours to get back to SC b/c the roads were so icy. Then throw in the flight to Cali and back.
B. Money. So the tickets are from $157 to $220, a flight will be about $500. Throw in parking at Dulles, the gas to get from SC to DC and back, going out on New Year’s, cab rides to and from the LA airport, money for food and drinks and it gets a little ridiculous for a day and a half in LA.
C. I might have to sit by myself at the game. I could handle that if I was in the PSU section, but if I’m surrounded by USC fans I’m going to be miserable if we lose, and won’t have as much fun if we win.
Positives:
A. It’s the mutha fucking Rose Bowl. Against USC.
So, I don’t know. Thoughts BSD nation?

I'm in the same boat...
It’s not the game ticket or the hotel price that I hate…it’s the damn $550 for airfare. I don’t mind spending $200 to sit in the stadium for 3 hours. I get to watch PSU football, eat hot dogs, be drunk, and have a good time.
Now spending $550 to sit on a flying gasoline-bomb deathtrap with no PSU football and no hot dogs – not my idea of a good time. I was considering driving from NJ to Cali, but it would just be too much.
So instead, I will sit at home with my case of Yuengling and watch the Nits from my couch….sniffle sniffle.

Meant a longer post
got a freakin work call…anyway, here’s my case…
Experiences & memories should be the choice in tough budget decisions every time it’s remotely doable. Materials & possessions is a different story. But your A. list positive trumps all your A-C negatives, and here’s why:
A. Travel length: this can be sucked up. As much as it sometimes feels like ’it’s a small world after all,’ the earth is huge compared to our size, and given the speed/logistics of the mediocre design of our travel mechanisms in this Age, it takes a while and feels like a hassle to get places (compared to blogistan). But the catch is: there’s so many great places on this planet, so many great things to do. Hoof it to Australia some time on the 14-20 hr flight and check the hassle vs. reward quotient.
B. Money: this is simple. Have you got it now or can you get it soon? Keep your definition of Responsible veerrrry loose. Money comes and goes. Your memories, depending on how much of a boozer you are, last a lifetime.
C. Day-of Experience: heaps of us are going and know only a very few Real People. Many of us know a bunch of us Online People Who May Become Real. I myself am committed to organizing/participating in a decent size gathering. Besides, PSU Fans in extensia are Family. Pregame will be great. Losing sucks, we know, and it’s very possible that we could. Ingame and Postgame can vary wildly. We can decide during Pregame how to prepare for Postgame.
Oh, and back to your Positive A, the real reason why you’re coming:
It’s the mutha fucking Rose Bowl. Against USC.

agree completely
people think I’m nuts for spending all this time and money going to all the PSU games I went to this year, and for going to the Rose Bowl.
I, on the other hand, still regret not going to the OSU game in 2005, and would spend some good $$$ to have been there.
by The JuggerNitt on Dec 12, 2008 11:50 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Good points
A. I don’t really mind the travel. I’ve been flying cross country multiple times a year for like 12 years now, so it’s no big deal. Plus I have an exam I’m taking in early January that I could study for on the plane. Honestly the one thing that I’m most reluctant about is the driving from DC to State College and back b/c that went so terribly the last time.
B. Yeah, agree. Technically I can afford it. Plus my wife is cool with it.
C. Agree with all except for if I’m sitting alone among USC fans. I’m hoping my friend will come through with 2 tickets and I can sit with someone I know, or at least the one ticket will be in a PSU section.
So I’m heavily leaning towards yes. I’m going to wait until Monday to find out about the tickets, then I’ll look at airfare again. Hopefully prices won’t have gone up too much.

Woohoo, I got tickets!
The father of my friend who couldn’t go wound up getting tickets, and is gonna sell them to me for face, woohoo!!
My parents are letting me use their frequent flyer miles to fly me and the gf out to LA (I just have to find out how to appease the boss, since I’m gonna have to take an extra 2 days off, and fly back on the following Tuesday).
My cousin lives in Pasadena and offered to let me and the girl stay at her place, and use her car to get around!
Drinks etc out there are gonna be ridiculously expensive though, and considering I don’t have enough $$ right now to pay rent + electricity + heat (and not even mentioning the credit card) I’m gonna be squirming a bit. Oh well, ROSE BOWL BABY!!!!!

Your sacrifices on the altar of Penn State football are appreciated!
Like many of us out here I really don’t have the $ to go but right now but my family hit me with the jtothep and JNitt reasoning of ‘how many times in your life will you get a chance to do this?’ reasoning and I broke down and said the hell with it. I will be looking forward to meeting many of you out here!
Now all we gotta do is figure out the tailgate situation thing. Hopefully someone in Pasadena (lookin’ your way HawaiiPennState! ) may be able to get some kind of insight as to how the lots may work as I have NO clue.
That should be hilarious, btw… a buncha BSD’ers watching SoCal and PSU people walk by and then typing muttering ’that chick/dude/person/etc. sounds looks hot"

Here’s my schedule
-31st: drive from state college to DC. Fly outta DC at like 5Pm. Get into LA around 930 PM (assuming no delays). Then take whatever transportation I can figure out to Santa Monica. Drop off stuff at hotel, then party for New Years.
-1st: Get up at the ass crack. Sleep optional. Tailgate, game, then whatever after the game,
-2nd: Leave LA at 9:30 AM. Get back to DC around 8pm. Drive up to State College. Die.

That soon to be legend of PSU’s ‘09 RB is what you tell your grandkids about just before they commit to JoePa and enroll in that spring many years from now. Your journey shall be immortalized on BSD (and probably some objectionable websites) for years to come. Can’t wait to see our photo albums after this one.
PS- Santa Monica is only about 20 minutes (on a normal day) from LAX but it will be New Year’s so that may be a bullshit statement.

How should I get there?
Should I just take a cab? I was looking at some other things and found some kind of shuttle/bus that is part of the LA Metro system. It’d be much cheaper than a cab.
by speedomike on Dec 12, 2008 5:51 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Take Metro
From Santa Monica you will need to take a bus to get to the Metro Rail System. Than you can take Metro Rail Red Line to Pasadena via the Gold Line, and they have special service to the Rose Bowl. From LAX you can take a shuttle to the Metro Green Line and connect via the Blue, Red and Gold line.
The easiest thing to do is call 1-800-commute from LA and they will give you info on connections.
The game should be great. This will be the best defense you’ve seen this year, Malaluga is OUTRAGIOUS.
Good Luck.

No
Bounced around between a few friendly groups, directionally I believe we were on the south side of the stadium. I believe a lot of the travel packages have their own “exclusive” tailgate areas, which at this point probably take up a lot of the prime real estate.

Alumni Bowl Trip Seating
Anyone know what type of seats I will get since I ordered mine through the alumni bowl trip?

Disorganized is an Understatement
I’ve been a student at UPark since Fall 04 and I’m graduating in a week. Every time I’ve ever tried to buy student tickets for some away event, I’m amazed at what a crappy job the athletic ticket office does in organizing the sale and think it couldn’t get any worse. The Rose Bowl student ticket sale was easily the most unprofessional, disorganized ticket distribution I have ever seen in my life.
The setup was brilliant – prevent everyone from camping out by not releasing the location of the sale until 1.5 hours before the sale. And once the location was released, yeah it was kinda chaotic getting to the BJC, but everyone lined up outside the ticket booth in an orderly fashion and everything was good to go. Then some genius had the idea to move the line inside.
Within about 3 seconds, the line turned into a mob/riot. All 1000+ people that were lined up were trying to squeeze through 2 doors to get into the BJC. I tripped over some kid’s bike, and for about 10 seconds, visions of the Nassau County Walmart on Black Friday were going through my head. Finally my friend cleared enough room for me to stand up, and after pushing and shoving for close to a minute we got inside, but we had gone from the first 300 in line to the last 300. One of our friends was farther up in line, who we-rejoined, but we were still at least 300 people farther back than we were in the original line.
We thought the worst was over, but the “line” inside progressively turned more and more into a shoving/pushing mass of people over the next hour. The police were pissed off that the athletic ticket office hadn’t followed their advice about how to run the ticket distribution, and so out of protest, did nothing to try to control the crowd. There were no stantions in place. Nothing to organize or control the line. Only police who passively watched and BJC employees with an average age of 65 that were completely ineffective at controlling anything. I finally did get tickets, but I guarantee you that there were people around me in the initial line that did not.
I am amazed and disgusted that the planning for that could have been so poor. If you were able to get tickets another way, be glad you did.
by PSUMark2008 on Dec 13, 2008 10:58 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I agree 100% with what you said...
What a mess. I was also one of the first 300 in line and ended up being one of the last getting my ticket. The University is extremely lucky that nobody was seriously hurt in that mob. Could you imagine the positive press we would’ve received from ESPN? I can’t believe there was no organization of any kind.

suggstions for making money
you’ll likely be passing through states such as Ohio, Indiana, and maybe even Illinois and Iowa (really depends on the route you take). I’d advise for $$ to turn some tricks at the truck stops. Sure, you sell out your dignity, but hey, you get to the Rose Bowl with some cash to spare (of course assuming you don’t get murdered, but that’s not that likely)

1 PRIMETIME Ticket Available
If anyone is interested, I have a primetime (1) ticket available for the Grandaddy of them all. I don’t have the exact seat number or section, but it’s right next to the parents / coaches of PSU players section. That section is typically the first 10 rows of the stadium in a primetime spot.
If anyone is interested, please let me know. I am not trying to make any money on this, only to get back what I paid for this ticket, as I am now unable to go to the Rose Bowl. I will get the exact seat number and section as soon as I have it, but I guarantee you will not be disappointed. I got tickets from the same source for the Wisconsin game and was in the 5th row, right next to the band in the end zone where Dwill returned a punt for a TD. It was amazing, and I can only imagine how much better the Rose Bowl will be than a romp at Wisky.
The price is more than reasonable for what you’re getting, and is WAY cheaper than whats on stubhub or ebay right now.

Accordint to the pamphlet form the NCL, Parking is on an adjacent golf course. The pamplet described stack parking 5 rows deep, but I have a bud in LA who went to a few UCLA games and said parking was like normal in rows of two. So, take this for what it’s worth. Anyone in Orange County wanna roll with me?
I picked up a pair of tickets thinking my boys from back east would be coming out for a week long, beer soaked new year, obviously culminating with a proud victory in The Grandaddy. Well, one of them ended up with an $800 fine to pay, so they all decided that they won’t be making the trek. Shitty is right. Now here I sit with 2 tickets (something about Tunnel 13, Row 42…don’t have them in my hands yet) and no one to ride shotgun.
Obviously, I can’t NOT go. It’s a short drive and I’ve been a PSU fan since I could breathe. I’m still trying to hunt down some people who might be interested in going, but I’m slowly scraping the bottom of the barrel. The wife offered to tag along, but I’m really not in the position to be dropping over $300 on tickets.
So…if you’re down here and need a single ticket for face ($165) and want to roll to the game with me, let me know. I plan on leaving as early as possible on 1/1 and tailgating my ass off, fwiw.
