Devlin Situation
With Devlin transferring and Cianciolo graduating, for next year we are only going to have Clark as of now. But I realized, how would things be any different if Devlin had been named starter. Yes, we would have Devlin for another year, but Clark probably would not have bothered trying to get the extra year of eligibility and would be gone after this year anyways. So either way, we would be stuck without a backup. If anything naming Clark the starter and losing Devlin was better than starting Devlin and losing Clark, because now recruits, like Newsome, will see that they can potentially start their Sophmore year after being a backup to Clark for a year. This could be very attractive to athletic guys , like Newsome, since both of Penn State's recent athletic QB's led Penn State to BCS Bowls. Although this could hurt the WR recruiting since as of now, Penn State has no actual QB after '09. The other possible options for backups could be Drake or the walk-on on the practice squad(McGloin?). Although neither would be able to match up to Devlin right away, the current situation should be enticing for QB recruits looking for playing time.

Devlin's Decision Hurts Bad
Pat Devlin is the best AAAA Pennsylvania ever produced. I do not recall a backup of his quality at PSU since 1968, and nothing that he did at PSU leads me to believe that he is not a great prospect.
His leaving hurts PSU. Period. I can’t believe that it was in his best interest. Mike Robinson did not do badly by starting only one year. Devlin would have had significant backup time next year, with our easy schedule, and would be in a great position to take over the lead in two years.
I may be wrong, but the last guy to leave PSU was John Sacca, transferring to East Tennessee State or something like that. John did not progress to the NFL after that move.
I hope Devlin does well, but the program will have to react in a positive way in the immediate future to add the depth that we will need at this position.

Things definitely would have been different
if Devlin was named starter, I imagine Clark still would have tried to come back for his final year, but even without that, we wouldn’t have Clark in 2010, while we would have Devlin.
But it doesn’t matter. Clark won the starting QB job, and for whatever reason Devlin could only put up with that for 1 year.
Ah well, the one “plus” in this situation is that it makes it hopefully more likely to get Newsome or Boyd
Wide Out in the Open
Recruiting Newsome or Boyd is now a defining moment for this program. It is now official, Penn State is now longer a traditional drop back quarterback offense. The spread attack is here to stay. We need the right QB to make this work. We must get Newsome or Boyd
Reg4
I agree that we need a QB or two
But I would caution against any setting expectations around getting a specific player. I don’t recall anyone saying we need to get clark or mrob, and those both worked out OK.
Don’t believe the recruiting hype, just hope PSU brings in a couple tough talented guys who can assume leadership roles by their 2nd year.
