You Could Be Mine: Kevin Newsome
[UPDATE: Newsome picks Penn State. Under section 4.29 of the BSD Administrative Code, I am obligat...
WOOOOOOO GIMME A FOUR STAR QUARTERBACK AND EXCITEMENT IN 2010!
Also, a local news video report from Virginia, helpfully flagged by BSD reader "psu". You'll love the Overdramatic Sportscaster Voice, too.]
The highly praised, Virginia quarterback recruit makes his selection this afternoon.
There pretty much are no other recruiting options available at this late date if Newsome decides to go elsewhere. The Lions suddenly became shorthanded at the position when talented sophomore Pat Devlin decided to transfer last week.
"It's huge," Bob Lichtenfels of Scout.com, a national recruiting service, said of the decision. "He's a dual threat guy with a strong arm. He's not (Ohio State's) Terrelle Pryor with the ball in his hands, but he's in between Clark and Pryor. He's faster and more athletic than Clark ..."
Penn State's offensive "system fits his skill set, and they need him," Lichtenfels said. "He can step in and learn from Darryl that first year and really learn the offense and, by year number two, probably be your starting quarterback."
Newsome's college transition will be aided by his early graduation from high school and enrolling at the school of his choice next month. He will be able to participate in an entire spring workout session.
Penn State is considered by most experts to be the leader for Newsome's services, especially in light of the Pat Devlin transfer. As with all other aspects of the dirty business known as college recruiting, there are no certainties. You hear that? None, nada.
A dazzling array of highlights, while we wait:

Talking to the Techies
Everyone down here seems to think he’s going to PSU after being so sure last week that he was going to Tech. They site the sudden opening in playing time with Devlin’s departure and the fact that Tech’s offense has consistently finished 90-110th in the nation ever since the Vick era. Their offensive coordinator makes JayPa look like Bill Walsh and with Tech getting an Orange Bowl bid, the guy doesn’t seem to be leaving anytime soon. On the flipside, whenever we have a mobile QB of his kind, our offense goes from flatline to national contender.
That said, I’m not holding my breath on the decision of an 18 year old high schooler. There is no telling where he could end up.

True
Paul Jones is still a junior this year so when Clark graduates he’ll be an incoming freshman, so I think we would have to get a QB in this class. What’s up with Myles Gibbon, is he completely off the board?

after that mess, and the Shaw mess, I’ve learned to keep pretty reserved about this recruiting thing until signing day. E ven if he does verbal, it is pretty meaningless until he’s signed the LOI.
Either way, the recruiting process is still extremely entertaining to keep track of — it’s part of why I love NCAAF, nothing is static, everything changes…

I think Newsome is as close to a lock as you can get for an 18 year old.
Devlin’s transfer, as I’ve said before, might be the best thing for us. Granted Clark is blessed with good health and no injuries, this sets us up nicely to have a 3 year starter starting in 2010. I can see it now:
Newsome rolls to his right
Fakes the pitch to Royster

I don’t think it is the best thing for Devlin to leave because instead of a Redshirt-Senior QB against Alabama we now have a Redshirt Walk-on Soph and a True Freshman/Soph…not exactly a lot of experience.

What I think they mean by 'best thing' is that we probably would not have had a real shot
at Newsome had PD not left. Newsome went from being on the fence with us, VT, tOSU, and BC (not really, IMHO) to cancelling a visit to tOSU and scheduling this presser today. Kinda looked to me like Pat leaving gave the kid thoughts of walking into a starting role in his Soph year.
Now why we haven’t landed more WR’s in this class (all with the outside shot of merely being on the field with the Zug, mind you) is kinda beyond me when you look at the same lack of depth at WR. I thought we would have heard more out of McNeal, Brown, etc but they may just be waiting to sign with a lot of exposure and all that jazz

UM can't say shiite
Shaw’s signing day crap is a totally different animal when compared to kids who decommit on their own months before the signing day. At least they have the chance to fill those schollies and re-target some kids as opposed to ‘what the hell just happened? uhh… thanks a lot’ garbage we got outta Shaw.

Less hypocritical than stupid, IMO.
It’s just two totally different situations. They told Newsome he was their QB, then went out and recruited Forcier. That’s fine when it comes to WR’s and RB’s, but QB recruiting is a different animal.
Still, my attitude on the subject is “all’s fair in recruiting until Signing Day”. Playing the game any other way is just stupid and suicidal.
by Run Up The Score on Dec 16, 2008 3:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
That's true... very true
We were targeting both kids and I guess Meatchicken thought they could double up by taking two good QB’s and limiting our top targets in the process. As much as I thought Forcier was the kid we wanted at the start of the year I think Newsome would work out better with what we are trying to go with as far as the Spread HD.

Not Quite
UM was recruiting Forcier long before Newsome committed. They also had another top QB sign (Beaver). Newsome opened things back up before Forcier committed.
All that said, as a UM fan, I don’t care if Newsome goes to another Big Ten school after having committed to UM. 18 year old kids can change their mind.
Also, and not saying Newsome is this way b/c I truly have no idea, but any QB who is concerned with competition is not someone I want on my team.
by Wlvrn99 on Dec 16, 2008 4:56 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I see your point,
but why would a kid go somewhere along with two other 4 or 5 star guys, when he could be the man (on paper, at least) at a place like PSU? Add in the fact that Dick Rod hasn’t shown much in his first year, and I can see kids looking elsewhere.
Every kid wants to PLAY. Hell, USC folk complain how hard it is for Carroll to coach all those 5 star kids, ‘cause each thinks he deserves more time. We had the same thing here with Devlin. Kids want to be on the field. Why shouldn’t they be looking after their own interests?
'People are about as happy as they decide they want to be'
by Pete the Streak on Dec 16, 2008 5:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't disagree
that a lot of kids would think that way – “I don’t want to go there b/c it will be tougher to break into the lineup.” What I’m saying is I don’t want that type of player on my team, esp. at the QB position. If you don’t think you can beat out 2 other guys, regardless of how many stars the recruiting services gave them, you don’t have the confidence required to play QB at a school like UM or PSU.
by Wlvrn99 on Dec 17, 2008 8:54 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Is it a fact
that he decommitted because of the other guys? Or did he see something at PSU he just loved, or something in Dick Rod that he didn’t like?
I don’t blame schools for over-recruiting at positions, but the coach has to know he’s going to be wasting two or more of these guys. What USC does to RB’s is a shame – bringing in 4 or 5 each year, and 3 go to seed. Yes, every team needs some backup, but 5 of them, and all 5 star guys? Seems a waste.
Kevin saw a school that set up perfectly for him, and took it. If you have other info that shows he was concerned about competition, I’d be happy to see it.
'People are about as happy as they decide they want to be'
by Pete the Streak on Dec 17, 2008 10:08 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't
Like I said, I don’t know what his situation was – speculation above was that he became concerned when UM didn’t stop recruiting Forcier. I don’t blame him for making the decision he did, he has to do what is best for him, and the path to a starting job is easier at PSU. No different than Devlin deciding the path to the NFL is easier away from PSU/JayPA.
My point was simply that a QB at this level needs to KNOW that he can beat out 5 star competition, and I would be concerned if they lacked that confidence.
by Wlvrn99 on Dec 17, 2008 10:25 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
But
If you have the option of going to a school where you are virtually guaranteed a starting job your true sophomore year why wouldn’t you choose that over a school where you are going to have to compete against two other really good players? Does it mean he’s afraid of competition? Not necessarily. It just means he’s weighing his options and selecting the school that gives him the best opportunity to play early and win.
If he really wanted a challenge he could have gone to play for Northwestern, Baylor or Vanderbilt. But most high end players don’t go to those schools because it’s too hard to win there. Does that mean they are afraid of competition?

Not sure
I’m not sure it was about shying away from competition. I think he wanted assurance from RR that he was going to be the cornerstone upon which he builds his offense. He was probably expecting RR to back off of other targets once he committed. When RR kept recruiting Forcier it made Newsome question RR’s confidence in him. He probably perceived he was walking onto the Michigan campus already in a hole and that’s not what RR had promised him.
I don’t know what was said between RR and Newsome, but there were grumblings about Newsome’s displeasure with RR’s recruiting tactics. While Penn State basically put all of their effort into Newsome after Forcier committed to Michigan. Who wouldn’t feel better about going to a school that really wants to build around you rather than treat you like a role player?

Unfortunately
I think the days where you bring in two or three top guys and let them compete are dying off. Look at Mallet and Devlin, those kids both transfered because they did not get what they felt they were entitled to based on the recruiting process.
Newsome wants to play, he wants to start, and he wants to do it as soon as possible. So once it looked like that wasn’t a lock a Michigan he opened up his recruiting. Once it became clear that we run an offense that he can thrive in, he became a Penn Stater. I don’t see it as anything more than a business decision with the kid.
Good to have him, we certainly need him, but it seems to me, that just like Devlin, he’ll be gone the second he doesn’t get exactly what he wants.

Smarter than you know, Jesse.
“Look at Mallet and Devlin, those kids both transfered because they did not get what they felt they were entitled to based on the recruiting process.”
I think “based on the recruiting process” is the key line there. Ten years ago, a team could bring in two or three highly rated guys and let them fight it out. Now, part of the recruiting process is a bunch of self-appointed experts (yes, I’m generalizing) telling these players how unbelievable they are, how they’ll lead their eventual school to a national championship, etc., and their expectations are so high when they arrive on campus that they start freaking out when it doesn’t work out exactly as planned.
Newsome was in a tough situation with respect to Michigan. He was supposed to be The Guy, but RichRod kept adding more QB’s to the class. Understandable, given the QB situation in Ann Arbor, but I can see how a kid could feel squeezed. It’s much easier to jump ship now than two years into your college career.

Devlin did think Clark was a threat to him being a three year starter when he picked Penn State. He was wrong. He got beat out, and he transfered.

The advent of recruiting services
The internet has really changed recruiting. Kids can look up depth charts and research their competition unlike before. They can quickly find out how many four star quarterbacks a school has recruited the last two years. Before the star systems and online services they had no idea what they would be up against when they stepped on campus. Now they can read interviews from other recruits to get a feel for what they are being told by the same guys recruiting them.

Team
Programs like PSU and UM don’t “build around” a player. They build players. The attitude needs to be, If you have talent and are willing to learn/compete, come to this school and you’ll have every opportunity to succeed at the highest level of this sport. Recruiting is always going to involve a certain amount of ego-stroking since you are trying to get 18 yo stars’ attention, but the minute you elevate one guy above your program, it is a quick ride downhill.
UM did this to an extent with Drew Henson 10 years ago. Star QB, “we’ll build around you,” no redshirt, didn’t recruit a QB for 2 years, etc. Then he decided to play baseball and we had to start a redshirt FR who played DE in high school.
A great man once said, “The Team, The Team, The Team.”

10 years ago every recruit was high school kid picking a college. Now, and forever I fear, the most highly regarded recruits are much more like free agents trying to make the best deal.
I think that the trend toward disgruntled 5 star recruits transfering is going to get much worse before it gets better.

But 3 QBs in one class?
You definitely don’t want a guy who is scared to compete. But it’s not smart to go into a situation where there are two other guys from the same year with similar pedigrees and skill sets. Especially if a coach tells you that you are our guy at the same time he’s signing two other guys for the same position.
Now, if he shows up expecting to have the job in 2010, that’s a different story. Because McGloin will probably provide some decent competition.

Wonder if JoePa's (at the moment supposed) contract extension means in light of all this
JoePa sticking around to have another core of great players, or the program and Joe showing their commitment and that there won’t be any big changes in order to lure in a QB…

Plus, every team needs at least one good Canadian…for foreign relations

unfortunately, Canada also gave Phillies a 3 run HR by Joe Carter off of Mitch Williams in Game 6 of the 1993 World Series
Not that it bothered me so much, since I’m a Yankee fan, but I had just moved to the Philly area that year, and had quite a bunch of disappointed friends.

Sky is NOT falling
Am I the only one that feels this way? Getting Newsome will be HUGE but, if we don’t I won’t feel so terrible about the program. We will continue to survive. We don’t know what this McGloin has, but Joe speaks highly of him, and no one wanted Butler or Norwood, 2 of our best receivers ever. Once again we will prevail with or without Newsome, or Boyd or anyone else.

Roland is correct
Who really wanted M-Rob? Or Clark? The really big names we’ve had lately (Morelli, Devlin) didn’t get it done. Devlin MIGHT have, but Clark has been great.
Newsome would be great, but I’m not going to put the Suicide Hotline on speed-dial if he goes elsewhere.

by pennst92 on Dec 16, 2008 5:56 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Sweet...
That means Newsome will finally blossom in his senior season.
So, 2010 and 2011 will royally suck…but in 2012 we can split the Big Ten title with Ohio State after beating them but suffering a crushing road loss to some other conference foe.
by NittanyBadger on Dec 16, 2008 6:01 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Nah...
This team is going to be very good next year…and it lines up in terms of eligibility for Newsome that he’ll have 3 years (potentially) as the starter…I don’t think you’ll see the indecision w/ him that you saw w/ MRob during the Mills years…
just my 2 cents…

Who would have guessed?
Devlin did have something to do with it:
“What helped with Penn State a lot was I would get a little more playing time a little bit earlier,” Newsome said. “Every quarterback wants to come in and be able to challenge someone for the spot, so I want to learn from Daryll Clark for a year, and by the time I’m a sophomore be ready to take control of the Penn State offense.”

There’s way too much ceremony surrounding these kids who won’t even usually be seeing playing time for another 2-3 years MINIMIM (one year until the season starts, and usually a redshirt year plus usually another year or so of backup duty)

I think it's okay.
I don’t have any problem with it. Stuff like this is a legitimate news story in a local market (I mean, I don’t think WAVY is any sort of sophisticated, high budget news org.). Newsome wasn’t up there acting like a fool.
The problems arise when kids start going through the “which hat will I choose?” routine, or pull some sort of costume change. That shit is just silly.
