Kevin Newsome, Moonwalking Piano Man
So, yeah, did anything happen yesterday? We'll continue digging into the new Joe Paterno contract, and what it means for the program, recruiting, the current assistant coaches, and those who may have been eyeing up the potential job opening from afar. This video is too good to postpone, however.
From PrepTicket.com, a truly great profile of Kevin Newsome and his family. He plays the piano. He moonwalks. He has a brother named Keevon. He likes to get A's and watch his Mom smile. Yes, it looks like we got a solid citizen from a great family. A solid citizen who can throw a football 70 yards in a pinch.

Wow, he seems like a pretty solid, well rounded kid
I was a bit worried about the decommitting from Michigan, and hopefully it wasn’t shying away from competition, or weak mental fortitude or anything like that. Maybe he just honestly assessed his situation and where his best chance to succeed was (a system that basically has no real other options ;-p )

I don't think
anyone transfers to a military academy because they’re afraid of competition ; those places are all ABOUT competition.
It seems he seriously evaluated every aspect of his future, and decided Joe was right: “Come to Penn STATE!”.
Welcome, Kevin.

I like the cut of his gib
Even without the Star Rating, this is the kind of kid you want representing PSU

OMG, so much material
Some quick thoughts:
- What’s the percentage increase in tail selection 17yo dudes like this get with this kind of pub and change of location?
- Moonwalk was tight, and fast. Most ppl fail on the proper pace of a good moonwalk.
- Piano: yeah, but how big are his hands?
- His mom named him Kevin & his brother Keevon? Very Freakonomicsesque; is it akin to naming your boys Winner and Loser?
- Gawd, how much discipline do these kids have these days to abandon the ‘be a kid’ lifestyle of public school and transfer to a freakin military academy to better to take advantage of opportunities? Did I never develop this b/c I have no talent? (don’t answer that)
- He looks like Reggie Bush, but less pretty boyish.
- Hargrave really played Navy’s JV team?
- Navy really has a JV team?
- ‘Knowledge is Power’; love it. Very KRS One of him. Or, Kool Moe Dee. Or, Ice-T. Hell, very 80s hip hop of him.
- What is the cut of a gib?

I wouldn't want a QB
that can’t moonwalk. That should be a requirement for all future PSU QBs. Man, I bet Zug is one helluva Moonwalker.

Zug does not walk
He merely lifts his foot and the Earth rotates to accommodate him.
Actually on-topic, this kid looks solid and seems to have a good head on his shoulders…sounds like a PSU guy to me.

On-Topic: I can’t wait to see how good Kevin Newsome is with a decent offensive line.

MOONWALKIN BEEAAATCCHES
I say we lower our academic/criminal standards to get more moonwalkers, it is just that sweet. And maybe we could get a kicker who does the dolphin or robot.
We just needed a couple players, a couple people to buy in to the fact and we were able to do it. --A.Q. Shipley

Piano
That line about playing the Piano giving you a better grip is 100% true. I played Piano for 16 years
during my school days an it made me a better reciever because it requires so much strength in the
fingers and hands to play and it helps you grip the ball.

He's going to have a fun four years.
Hopefully, it’s the “don’t punch anybody or get caught passed out drunk on a bench” kind of fun. The kid has the world at his fingertips, starting today.
Given his parents’ demeanor, I like his chances for success.

I remember seeing Bob Saget sing a really dirty song
to the tune of Backstreet Boys (or maybe it is N’Sync) song “I want it that way”. I just remember one of his lines was “Kimmy Gibbler wanted it that way”.
He was also on an Entourage episode smoking a bong and hanging out with hookers.
I wonder what his Full House fans think of all that :-p

Newsome Quotes
Here’s some good quotes from Newsome in the Altoona Mirror. Link below:
“Virginia Tech is a great school, and I love them and appreciate them,”
he said. “What helped a lot with Penn State was that I would get a
little more playing time a little bit earlier. Every quarterback wants
to come in and be able to challenge for the spot. I want to be able to
learn from Daryll Clark, and by the time I’m a sophomore be ready to
take control of the Penn State offense.”
“It was a very difficult decision, but Penn State came out on top,”
said Newsome, who is one of the nation’s top dual-threat quarterbacks.
What also helped was the relationship he built with Clark over the weekend while visiting Penn State .
“Clark is a great guy,” Newsome said. “He’s a very smart quarterback and an
African-American quarterback, so we have things in common. He told me a
lot about the game, about Penn State and everything I needed to know
because he was in the same situation when he came to visit and Mike
Robinson was there. I really enjoyed him.”
“I told Frank Beamer that I was going to be a Nittany Lion,” Newsome
said. “He sounded disappointed, but at the same time he said, ‘You know
what Kevin, you’re a good guy and I wish you luck and success wherever
you go.’ I really appreciated that, not just as a coach but as a man.”

Clark
Clark I believe may have been key in recruiting Newsome — he’s an extremely bright and talented guy, and just like MRob he has a magnetic personality.

Clark
I just forwarded the Altoona story to a Tech coworker and bolded the statements about Clark. I think that had a huge impact, and I like how Clark is continuing this recent tradition of mentoring the incoming prospects like Robinson did. Hopefully Newsome will do the same in the future.
Somehow I just can’t see Tech’s QB Tyrod Taylor taking Newsome aside and intelligently walking him through college life and the quarterback position. And I think it made a big difference in landing him.

Mike can we come up with a sweet nickname for him? With the possibility of Project Mayhem leaving for the NFL, we need another sweet nickname.
p.s. I can wait to see this guy throw 65 yard td bombs down the field at beaver stadium!! Welcome to PSU Newsome!!!!!!!

YOU SAID IT
Believe me, I was one of those “we need Pryor!!!!” types; but that was BEFORE I ever got to seem him speak and explain himself.
Pryor is inarticulate, over-confident, and a prima donna. Pryor is all the things Penn State isn’t. Newsome on the other hand is a PERFECT fit from what I’ve seen.
Furthermore, I am also of the opinion that given the way Devlin handled this whole situation, we are also better off without him as well.

Newsome
I would think Joe Pa’s reaction to that clip would be something like:
-Heckuva kid.
-Good kid, good family, thewholebit.
Seriously, he seems like a solid mature kid. The moonwalking was a nice touch, as was the crisp french-cuffed shirt he was wearing during the interview.
Let’s hope he absorbs that playbook starting in January and is ready to go in 2010.

Michigan Helmet
Around the 4:46 mark, I think I spotted a Michigan helmet in the background. I don’t know if he got that when he originally committed there or what. But I guess it doesn’t matter anymore. Also, it appears that education is pretty important and his family seems well to do, so I don’t think we have to worry about him leaving early to go pro. I’m hoping that we can pick up Jenkins as well because I have a couple of friends that go to school with him that say he’s pretty nice and is a good student. It would be neat to have those two setting an example for everyone else and continuing JoePa’s Grand Experiment.
by Grapenapalm on Dec 17, 2008 5:21 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
He won't go pro early... unless he graduates early.
He enrolling in January, and will probably be taking a decent amount of courses during the summer. If he’s as good a student as his HS grades indicate, he’ll probably have his diploma before the start of his senior year. No one could blame a kid for going pro after 3 years when he has tons of talent AND a degree.
All your base are belong to JoePa.
