Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Newsome: Good! Rest of Class: ???

It's great that we got Kevin Newsome, but if one looks on Rivals.com, the rest of the class seems lacking?  We've got half as many 4-star players as Ohio State and USC do, and have less than even Michigan State and Michigan.

I know that these rankings can be bogus and can't always predict future success...but given a choice I'd rather be up there with the big boys, wouldn't you?

Who Cares

If this class rounds out with at least Brown and Exum, we will have addressed most of our needs going forward. Adding Jenkins would be gravy and would put us in the stratosphere. If you look on Scout we have the 10th rated class right now. It’s all subjective. Rivals is pretty down on Mark Arcidiacono and The Drake, both which are believed to be pretty damn good players by most of PSU. Arc had a bunch of good offers I don’t know why he’s so low, but I digress.

It doesn’t really matter. We have a great class coming in that has filled most of our needs. Let’s hope the coaches coach them up and let’s win a few consecutive Big Ten titles.

You have to be careful looking in absolutes like that. Rankings can sometimes offer guidance but filling holes with players who fit into your program cannot be measured with star rankings. On top of that, offensive linemen and kickers are strong in this class but those guys are never going to be more than three stars simply b/c of their position.

USC has made a habit of picking up a lot of skill players, but when they have three five star running back in one class? Is that better than three four star guys at four different positions?

Everything needs to be put in context.

by KevinHD on Dec 17, 2008 2:25 PM EST reply actions

well

if you can get 3 guys to play 4 different positions that is one hell of a recruiting class

by Lion Alum on Dec 17, 2008 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly who cares?

Star rankings mean almost nothing. The landscape is littered with five star recruits that busted and two star recruits that went on to become All American first round draft picks. Charlie Weis brought in a top five class a few years ago loaded with five star kids. Half of them have either left the program or have yet to see the field.

Recruiting is a big part of the game, but so is developing that talent. Some guys are great recruiters but they can’t do anything with that talent. Think Weis and Ron Zook. Other guys excel at finding unrecognized talent and developing it into the kind of player he needs. I would put Joe Paterno up against anyone in the latter category.

The key thing is we’re recruiting kids at positions of need. That’s way better than taking a walk on kid and throwing him on the field. The coaches see these kids play in person. They watch hours and hours of film on them. They invite them up to camps to work them out in person. They sit down and have dinner with their families. If at the end of the day Joe Paterno thinks he’s good enough to play for Penn State, why should we question that just because some guy on the internet only gave him three stars?

by BSD on Dec 17, 2008 2:35 PM EST reply actions

I value Joe’s (and the staff’s) opinion of a player much more than some internet guy.
I think Penn State has a decent enough track record with “lower rated” players to prove that.

by NJ lion on Dec 17, 2008 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

I know I have mentioned this before...

but whenever a kid gets looks from ND or USC or schools like that they tend to get a recruiting ‘boost’ similar to Duke Basketball Recruit Syndrome. People in those markets buy those recruiting service premiums up and they love to read about how awesome their kids are.

If you're worried about what you see on Rivals....

then take a look at Scout. It’s much rosier. Here’s some highlights:

1. 10th ranking overall
2. tied for 4th overall with 4 Top 100 recruits
3. 3.27 avg stars

Oh yeah....

We have 10 kids who run the forty in 4.55 or faster. We’re doing fine and the last few commits will be very strong IMO.

man that is sloww

they have kids that run the forty in 0.0 …… seriously your sitting in the stands watching the game before the ball is snapped the WR is in the endzone with a TD….it’s a whole new kind of football…it’s revolutionary….totally negates the need for any kind of Defense

Jenkins

what is our realistic chance of landing Jenkins? Even though we’re loaded at LB, that guy is too good to pass up. Any chances on Stokes, or did that pass weeks ago?

by WPIALkid22 on Dec 17, 2008 3:18 PM EST reply actions

FLA v. PSU

Jenkins is FLA v. PSU. We presumably have the last visit. PSU passed on Stokes awhile ago.

by psuphiman80 on Dec 17, 2008 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

We have 3-4 more we're looking to sign yet...

Seems to be WR, Justin Brown of DE, ATH/QB Antoine Exum (4.4 – 40 yd), and Jenkins. From what I hear Jenkins is pretty high on FL right now. Lets hope that it changes. There is a remote chance he might stay at home and go to UMD too.

by deihlba on Dec 17, 2008 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

Jenkins high on Florida

He just took a visit there. It was his first official visit anywhere. The Florida Scout guy interviews him. He says he had a good time and suddenly the Florida people are convinced he’s a lock to their school.

LJSR has been recruiting this kid for years. He has a bond with him Urban Meyer doesn’t. Jenkins will be visiting PSU in a few weeks. I bet a few of his Maryland buddies that have already committed to Penn State will be up for a visit too. I’m confident LJSR will seal the deal on this kid. LJSR rarely lets Maryland talent get away.

by BSD on Dec 17, 2008 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

Damn you

Just like the post-Thanksgiving dinner nap on the couch I was just starting to settle into complacency with this class, satisfied and full. And you had to go and pull the pumpkin pie out of the foil.

Now my hopes are up. Bowman and Jenkins on the same field would be nasty.

Luring recruits with my new "Posting HD" scheme since '08.

by 06Lion on Dec 17, 2008 6:24 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

LJSR recruits the way you’re supposed to: find talent on your own, and then pursue that talent for years regardless of hype. He is our best recruiter for a reason.

Meyer just cherry picks other people’s recruits and because they’re successful it works. But a kid like Jenkins should see through that — he’s just a number and a ****** rating — not a person to Meyer.

Plus you cannot live down how well we’ve done with LB’s in the draft.

Mike,

Whats your take on Exum and Brown at the moment?

by deihlba on Dec 17, 2008 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

Looking good

I think it’s just a matter of time for Brown. I hear nothing but positives from him. He’s pretty much a lock.

I think we have a good chance with Exum too. Especially since he and Newsome supposedly really hit it off on their last visit to PSU. I would put Exum at 75% solid.

by BSD on Dec 18, 2008 7:29 AM EST up reply actions

DMV's finest

We need LaVar to add Jenkins to his DMV’s finest shirt and maybe that’ll lock him up. Mike, since your the expert (this still might be a little close to call), but do you think we’ll be seeing Jenkins in the blue and white?

by WPIALkid22 on Dec 18, 2008 1:29 AM EST up reply actions

That I don't know

Jenkins is tough to read. He doesn’t talk to the media much leaving that to his dad. He’s only taken one visit (Florida) and claims he wants to take four more. When asked he says his list is narrowed down to 14 teams. So he’s still up in the air.

But I like PSU’s chances. LJSR is on him and he has talked highly of Penn State since the beginning. I would bet we’re in his top two or three. If not for our overloaded depth chart it would probably be a slam dunk for us.

by BSD on Dec 18, 2008 7:31 AM EST up reply actions

Is it a huge loss if we don't get him?

I know he’s supposed to be a real good one, but we do have the 3 Mike LBs from last year, so I don’t see LB as a real pressing need right now (not like QB was).

by NJ lion on Dec 18, 2008 8:39 AM EST up reply actions

It stands the chance of moving this class from good to great.

by deihlba on Dec 18, 2008 9:27 AM EST up reply actions

Not really

But I would rather get him than see him go to Michigan or Florida.

by BSD on Dec 18, 2008 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Jenkins

He probably wants to follow in the footsteps of that Heisman winning LB at Florida, Tim Tebow.

(for those that don’t know, Meyer claimed Tebow was going to be a LB at FL while recruiting another top QB, Jevan Snead. Snead of course later transferred from TX when he couldn’t beat out McCoy.)

It's not the stars you should focus on

How many overlooked kids has PSU turned into superstars? The stars mean jack-shit. Yeah they might indicate initial talent and overall starting quality, but it’s what the school makes of them that’s the real test of what they’ll do for us. And I put full trust in our coaching staff to be able to spot talent when they see it, even if it needs to be developed a bit, and then turn the kids into players.

Look at Norwood and Austin Scott…who had the better career?

by SweepTheLeg on Dec 17, 2008 4:19 PM EST up reply actions

Eh...

Stars mean something. I think it was Sunday Morning Quarterback that did a breakdown of this. Generally, you want to be getting the higher ranked kids.

by speedomike on Dec 17, 2008 7:16 PM EST up reply actions

Stars are correlated with success

Yeah, they do mean something. I read the same analysis you did and something like half of 5* guys pan out really well. So yeah, you want the 5* athletes because that’s what they are, big time athletes with crazy good measurable stats.

But recruiting for need by far trumps signing just athletes. F$U has been mediocre recently because they’ve signed a ton of great athletes, yet have left glaring needs unfulfilled, like their O-line. Some teams like USC can get both needs and stars. PSU can’t win every 5* guy, so they’re well served to recruit by need as much as by raw talent.

by gcdyersb on Dec 17, 2008 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

Agree

I was just about to say that I really really like this class. Close with Brown, Exum, and Jenkins and you can’t ask for anything more.

by speedomike on Dec 17, 2008 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

Star system

I heard PSU tried using a ZUG rating system to evaluate a kid’s skill. Unfortunately, nobody rated higher than .05 ZUGS, so they scrapped it.

by Screen Name 20 on Dec 18, 2008 9:18 AM EST up reply actions

There is a reason for stars

There is a reason why they are given stars; it’s because they display a good amount of talent. But I take those as rough estimates. I mean obviously a 5 star kid displays his skill better than a 1 star, but you shouldn’t read into it deeper than that. Sometimes kids are rated low or not rated because of where they live (great example in Myles Gibbon, who lives in Canada) or because they didn’t go to any camps.
The way I judge a recruit on how good he is is by seeing what other schools are recruiting him. If schools like USC, Texas, Florida, etc., who have coaches that their only job is to bring good kids in, are recruiting a kid from Maine, he’s pretty damn good

by WPIALkid22 on Dec 18, 2008 1:35 AM EST up reply actions

Shallow Analysis

Like looking at a girls and thinking she’d be a good girlfriend solely because she has big boobs. Sure, they’re nice and all, but she might just be horrible to actually spend time with.

I agree, PSU players have less stars. PSU doesn’t have as many uber-athletes in its class at skill positions as the glamor programs. But the game is still won in the trenches as it always has been. The key here is signing depth of quality prospects at OL and DL because there will be attrition. Two above average line prospects are far more valuable than one superstar. And PSU is hitting depth and talent on the OL with this class. You’ll see the benefits in 2011 and 2012 just as you’re seeing just how awesomely deep and talented the 2006 DL recruits are right now despite half those guys leaving the program. Defensive backfield is another area that is a definite need that is well covered with talent and depth.

The only areas for improvement right now are at WR and DL, with WR a more urgent need. But realistically, if there aren’t a couple good WRs on this team now, that unit will struggle a bit regardless of this year’s recruits. DL you can always use more guys.

There are many factors that feed into the ratings, really...
  1. Will her frame support more weight or has she reached peak development?
  2. Can she shed a lead blocker and gobble up the ball carrier in the backfield?
  3. Can she go deep in a pressure situation?
  4. Does she over-commit and take herself out of the play?
  5. Does she run hard, but can be brought down fairly easily or tends to leave her feet too often to avoid tacklers?
  6. Does she get good hand placement and can be tough to beat when she locks on?
  7. Does she have soft hands but still shows hesitation when going over the middle?

Before all of the ladies in BSD tear me apart I would like to let you know that not only are these common recruiting statements but that I actually cut and pasted many of these right out of some ESPN recruit evaluations!

That would be the way to go, to be sure.

You would not believe how hard I was laughing when I was reading some of those evaluations. Here’s a couple right out of Newsome and Jenkins evals for example:

  1. Shows solid quickness getting to her throwing point and has a very good feel for front and backside pressure
  2. Can be right on the money or spray the ball everywhere
  3. She’s a very strong tackler who wraps up low and drives through with great power from her hips and lower body
  4. Also excels when pursuing laterally and sifting through the wash (laundry? lol)

Dude… the list could go on and on… :)

All but 3 of USCs players are from California

I know thats a good football state but all those 5 star and 4 star players from the same state? I think the rating system varies a lot from region to region depending on who is doing the star gazing.

Keep it in perspective

Do you have any idea how many high schools are in the LA area alone?

Former HC Barry Switzer (OU) once said of Terry Donahue (UCLA) that Terry “passed more blue chip recruits on the 101 freeway on his way to work than I have in my entire state.” That’s not all that far fetched when you consider the greater LA area has somewhere around 12 million or more in just that 150 mile radius. There are a ton of athletes out here and more than a few football factories private schools who can plug some of the uber rich talent kids like Montana’s boy (who will compete against Gretzky’s kid who will throw to Will Smith’s kid).
