Paterno's "contract"
Is it just me, or does anybody else take the whole 'may be lengthened or shortened by either party' thing as negating the intent of a contract? It's like they're basically saying 'he's year-to-year with no personal guarantees (the rest of the staff notwithstanding), but at least it's in writing now!'. I don't really have a beef either way- but it just strikes me as odd that the braying morons reporters are placated by the existence of a 'contract' even though it appears to be completely meaningless.

you know
i thought about that statement myself. isn’t that what already happens in the sports world? to me a contract in the sports realm is performance based: you do good, they keep you; you do shitty you get canned. I don’t know if I’ve been reading it wrong, but I really don’t see anything thats different from any other sports contract, except that it was “put in writing” for Joe, or someone decided they wanted to put it in writing for a story

Small Difference
The fact its put in writing does lead to a difference. Normally coaching contracts are always honored in college football, if the coach is fired he is paid the rest of his salary the contract promised him, if he leaves for another job he has to pay for a buyout. Due to that clause in Paterno’s contract, a buyout or severance package wouldn’t be needed. Obviously those wouldn’t be needed if the clause wasn’t there, since Paterno is a long way away from being fired and I don’t honestly thing he will leave PSU for another coaching gig.

Public relations
It lets the world know that he’s going to be back. And by “the world”, I mean recruits.

I wonder
Every contract these days has some huge buyout clause. It’s said Charlie Weis’ buyout is close to $20 million. I wonder what Joe’s buyout is. Probably a new Buick or something.

Joe's buyout clause
— a straight up wrestling match with between the President and the "ol boy himself. 3 rounds of throwdown.
I’d put my money on Joe every time.
