PSU v USC: Mindset of the PSU Fan
I know that Mike will probably do a "mindset of Penn State players" before the game, but I wonder what the typical mentality of the Nittany Lion fan is for this game. Is it a "win or bust" idealism? If Penn State keeps it close and loses a heartbreaker, will many people consider that a moral victory? If its a USC blowout win ala OSU in September, will there be weeping and gnashing of teeth or will the disappointment be muted by the quality of this seasons results?

You forgot to put a PSU win into your poll.

Obviously if we won, that would be huge.
He’s saying how would we percieve a close or blowout loss.
Personally, preseason rankings had us at mid-pack, so it’s HUGE for us to get to the Rose Bowl and to have beaten the people we did, how we did. Some players have really stepped up their game and it’s been a LOT of fun watching that.
However, I am hungry for more, and I’m sure many agree. A loss in any fashion would be an immediate dissapointment.
In the long run, though, a blowout loss in the biggest bowl game for the Big10 this year would hurt us and the Big10. We’d be stepping into OSU’s shoes and the media would eat it all up. Personally, any moral victory would be out the window by then.

win or bust idealism? moral victory?
nothing short of beating USC will be acceptable. I don’t care if it’s a triple overtime slugfest.
we are penn state, we don’t know the meaning of “moral victory” — this is an elite program headed by one of the greatest coaches of all time at the helm of one if his best teams ever. The media’s been in the habit of treating PSU like we’re some 2nd tier program, like we should just be happy to have made it to the Rose Bowl, as if we’re not used to success.
sorry if this comes off as defensive, but that’s the truth for me

100% agreement...
….we must win this game! This game is huge and can set us up for the next 3-5 years.
WE ARE.......PENN STATE!

I appreciate the input
I am just trying to construct a Penn State 10 mentality because the Big 10 conference has come under intense media negativity, not to mention a weird idea that the Pac 10 and Big East are still better conferences, no matter what matchups or records say.
by grahamfiller10 on Dec 22, 2008 2:52 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I don't think anyone thinks the Pac10 or Big East are better
I think that the media puts the BCS conferences into 3 tiers
Tier 1: Big 12, SEC
Tier 2: Pac10, Big10
Tier 3: Big East, ACC
I do think however that the media perceives the gap between Tier 1 and Tier 2 to be much greater then the gap between Tier 2 and Tier 3
I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

I will say win or bust at this point.
I am ok with the idea that we aren’t going to the MNC, but I really want to see this excellent team perform against USC and come out with a win. Anything else will be dissapointing.
We just needed a couple players, a couple people to buy in to the fact and we were able to do it. --A.Q. Shipley

No pressure from me
I can’t call this a win or bust game for myself. Nobody expected us to get this far. We weren’t even picked to finishi in the top three of the Big Ten this year. To go from 8-4 the past two years to 11-1, playing in the Rose Bowl and only being one late drive in Iowa away from playing for the National Championship is a good season. Losing the Rose Bowl won’t take any of that away.
Winning the game will be a nice cap to the season, but when it’s over it will have no effect on 2009. I’m excited for this team. We’re recruiting extremely well and they seem to have found their identity on offense. This team is a 180 degree opposite from the Penn State teams we saw the earlier part of this decade. I wish Joe Paterno had another ten years left in him because I really feel like Penn State is on the cusp of creating a ten year dynasty like Ohio State. It’s an exciting time to be a Penn State fan.

I agree except the part about
saying “nobody expected us to get this far” — I feel that is defeatist. what the talking heads say shouldn’t really temper our expectations as fans who actually pay attention… I don’t know much about football, but really anybody could have looked at who we were returning on offense and defense and knew we’d be pretty good; certainly better than Illinois and Wisconsin.
Now the talking heads say that we don’t even belong on the same field as USC. So should our expectations be low, despite having comparable stats, record, and talent? Should we believe that just losing by less than 14 is some sort of moral victory to hang our hats on? I think we should expect more from Penn State, even if the media doesn’t.

“but really anybody could have looked at who we were returning on offense and defense and knew we’d be pretty good”
Really, anyone who looked at the returning offensive line should’ve said “hey, these guys will be pretty good on offense.” You can easily say that you didn’t expect Clark to be this good, but having a ton of time to throw and a running back who picks up 7 yards a clip certainly helps anyone.

Managing Expectations
What is this talk about being a “defeatist”? What does that mean? I accept defeat? As if we have some kind of control over it as fans? What am I going to do about it other than gripe and bitch on this blog? And what will that accomplish exactly?
I don’t think it’s fair to the coaches and kids to say we should expect a win every time. That’s just not realistic. The only thing I expect is to be competitive. If they give their best game and come up just short I can accept that. There is no shame in that. If they go out and give their best game and lose by 30 points I think there is a problem.
I don’t get hung up and labelling what’s “acceptable” and “unacceptable”. Save that garbage for the message boards. When the team looks like they have given up and the coaches don’t care we can talk about what’s “unacceptable”. But just the mere fact they lose to USC is not cause for discrediting everything they have accomplished this year. After three full seasons of blogging about this team (and two full basketball seasons) I’ve learned that you enjoy it a hell of a lot better when you stop getting mad at the television and just hope for the best rather than expect it. If anyone wants to call me defeatist or say I’m not a true fan then go ahead. Whatever.

As a fan on a message board I’m not attempting to promote some ideal for this team to live up to, I’m reacting to the media’s expectations of the team. If someone asks me, ‘will you be happy with a close loss?’, well what’s really important is why the question is being asked. I think it’s because no one from ESPN or SI is giving us a chance in this game. I doubt this type of question is being posed to USC fans, because they’re supposed to win by a large margin.
The media’s coverage of Penn State has been negative all season, and that’s continued with the Rose Bowl coverage. So while we are exceeding expectations, we are doing so because the major sports analysts think we suck.
I wasn’t trying to question anyone’s fanhood or be confrontational, I’m just trying to challenge the paradigm from which these types of questions stem.

I also agree with Mike here
the Rose Bowl is only a must-win if you’re one of those annoying “12-1 sucks let’s fire the coach!” people, in my opinion. Every game is huge, sure, but in all reality this year will go in the overachieve column regardless of this game.

Not exactly win or bust
If we play our best and lose, I can’t possibly be mad, but I honestly think this team has the talent to beat SC and, if a few chips fall our way, convincingly.
I agree with Mike- the last few years seem to have set us up for what looks like years of, at worst, competitiveness or, at best, dominance. I do think that a win in the Rose Bowl helps that process though, at least in how the media looks at us.
John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

I don't think it's win or bust for Penn State....
but it could be win or bust for the BIG TEN… a loss here would only add additional fuel to the already blazing fire… I think the Big Ten Conference needs PSU to more then Penn State program…

The Rose Bowl is the first game of the 2009 season for us
If we win the Rose Bowl, that will put us in the top 5 or top 10 at the beginning if next season.
If we win the Rose Bowl, people may look past our ridiculously weak schedule next year and give us some credit for beating USC at the end on the 2008 season.
But regardless…win or lose, there WILL be booze!

I agree with most here so far
Obviously I like to get the W’s, but I’m never disappointed in a loss if it is a hard fought game between two evenly matched teams. One team has to win those games, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they were better (or that the losing team was worse).
With that said, I’d be highly disappointed in a blowout loss, and those feelings will probably be magnified by the stage the game is being played on (which itself is magnified over a normal game). I think the Big 10 needs a Penn State win, though, and since Penn State’s ranking is effectively pinned on the public perception of the Big 10, then we therefore also “need” this win.
As far as pre-season expectations, I completely disagreed with what the media was saying. I’m not going to say I’m a great football analyst, but I typically have a good feel for how the program will do in any given season, based on looking at the returning players, and the players that will be stepping up and filling in for graduating players, and then comparing our team to that of our opponents.
In 2002 (which came, logically, after the 2000 and 2001 seasons) I had friends who laughed at me for predicting that Penn State would move up into the Top 10 at least some point during the season, and in the final regular season AP poll we reached #10 (and if not for 2 bullshit calls in the Iowa and Michigan games we would have been even higher, with an 11-1 record).
2003-4 were much worse than I was expecting, but I was still only expecting a mediocre 7-5 type season.
2005 I wasn’t excpecting to be as good as it was until the end of the Northwestern game (and then the Ohio State game that followed).
2006 & 2007 I felt I had realistic expectations that varied based on how M*r*ll* turned out. In 2006 he was an unknown. In 2007 I was hoping for improvement. Both years I estimated ~9-3 both years, with a shot at a NC run in 2007 if he lived up to his potential. Unfortunately we all know how that turned out.
Before this season I was thinking we’d have 1-2 losses. I, like most people, thought we’d lose to tO$U and/or Wisconsin (boy was I off on that second one), but I thought we’d win the rest of our games.
So to sum up my ramblings, I think our team is very good this year, and should match up well against ANYONE they faced. The only 2 (or 3) teams I think that would have an advantage over PSU would be Florida, USC, and maybe Texas, but I don’t think any of them are significanly better than PSU. Since we’re basically going to USC’s home, I’d put the odds in their favor and say they’d probably win 60% of the time (which converts to about a 3.5 point spread). I still wouldn’t be too disappointed in a bigger loss, as long as it was a close, hard fought game.
But with all that said, I am still confident PSU can pull out a win here, and even a convincing win, and am hoping to be feeling quite happy when the clock ticks -0:02 (wait, Lloyd Carr isn’t involved in this game at all, right? ok, then when the clock ticks 0:00)

Not a moral victory, but
A close loss wouldn’t be a moral victory. In fact, it would be pretty painful. But in a realistic picture, a close loss is a typical result in a match-up between two evenly matched teams playing up to their ability. A close loss would not be an apocalypse. But it wouldn’t prove anything either. PSU has shown it’s a serious, balanced team this year and it’ll take a win on the road to prove it. A tight loss would not spoil the season, though it would confirm outside preconceptions of PSU.
Now, a blowout loss would be an apocalyptic result because it would demonstrate that the team is not up to its toughest test. That would really leave a bad taste in the offseason.
Any kind of win would be a nice cap on the season. A blowout would be rationalized by the media as USC being lazy, so a win is a win regardless of the differential.

I wont be happy unless we win...
Gotta send Derrick Williams and the rest of the seniors out on top, a group that turned around a program wont be happy with a moral victory and neither should we

I expected
no more than 2 losses at the beginning of the season. This team can and should perform well in this game. A loss of any kind will bring the haters out of the woodwork. There’s no kind of moral victory that can be had here, we either win and (hopefully) shut everyone up or lose and go back to being ranked #22 to start next season.

About the 3rd game of the season
I posted that I would be disappointed in anything less than a regular season undefeated team. Am I disappointed…probably a lot less than the players who lost one they shouldn’t have. Am I proud of the team? Damn right! They came back from their loss instead of losing heart and got to the Rose Bowl. I personally think this team can play with any team in the country and I bet if Mike did one of his graphs like he just did for the Rose Bowl, that it would show that. Fear the graph.
