Huge game for Ed DeChellis and Penn State tonight. A win over an ACC team would raise some eyebrows when the selection committee sits down at the end of the season. If we lose this game we'll head back to the Jordan Center disappointed with a 2-2 road trip. You can watch the game at 7:30 on ESPN2. Team stats after the jump.

Well, let's all be honest here.
It is kind of a joke. Not only have we never won it, but they aren’t even making it fair anymore. The ACC has six home games out of 11, then to add to the b/s, Michigan State’s “home” game is being played in Detroit, not on campus…so only four of the 11 games are on Big Ten campuses.

Am I a bad person?
The game is free for me (since I’m a Tech student) and it’s literally a ten minute walk from me, and I’m not going to the game.
I will be watching it on the television though.
This week is pretty big
Winning this game and Temple on Saturday would go a long way in bringing credibility to the hoops program. I realize neither GTech nor Temple are what they’ve been in the past, but there is still something to be said for beating teams like this. Plus, there aren’t really any other opportunities to have a good win after this until the Big Ten schedule starts.
Hammer, meet nail.
We actually hurt our NCAA tourney hopes by losing to URI, not because URI is a bad team but because we didn’t get a crack at Villanova. A win tonight though would be a good first step towards padding our tourney resume.

haha
This does look familiar. We can blame Mike for trying to pull me into a second demension.
Let's Go State
We look quite in-sync tonight, so far.
11-4, PSU on a 9-0 run. Yellow Jackets call timeout.

Only complaint so far...
Talor needs to calm down with the “in-your-face” 3 point attempts. We definitely could’ve worked for a better shot on his last brick.

Commenting during a b-ball game isn't nearly as easy as it is for football
there’s no time between plays

True dat.
Unless a spectacular play happens, you usually want to wait it out for several possessions before commenting. Otherwise, you’ll go insane trying to think of something to write.

ok so i admit...
i havent been following the team very closely this season so far… just checkin on scores mostly, this is my first time watching a game this season… is it me or do we look very undersized inside?? is that a knock on us? we seem to be getting hustle rebounds though…
Zac @ http://erieisforlovers.wordpress.com
Your eyes are not deceiving you
We are undersized in the frontcourt. It will be a lingering problem in Big Ten play unless AJ III and Brooks begin to step up in a big way.

Holy crap, we hit a free throw!

How many layups has Tech missed already?
That had to have been at least brick #5 from point-blank range.

there could be more… they look sloppy…

ugh...
i am about to mute this game… the student section ‘moaning’ is really load and annoying on tv…
Zac @ http://erieisforlovers.wordpress.com
They're attacking us inside relentlessly
And it’s paying off…What was once a 10 point lead is now down to 4.

Thank goodness, DJ.
Picking up a desperation air ball from Morrissey and laying it in. Unfortunately, we have no answer whatsoever for Aminu and Tech’s forwards.
Happy Hour Valley - Where the beer flows like wine
http://happyhourvalley.wordpress.com/
our offense
looks bad. Tech is playing really good defense, or we just can’t attack the hoop or handle the ball.
Let's Go State
they looked great early...
now they have tapered off and do not look sharp at all…

Everything turned to crap...
…when Danny came in.

28-27 GT after yet another three-pointer. Morrissey answers right back, 30-28 PSU.

Another point-blank layup/dunk missed
Thank god, Tech’s flubbed up their share of ‘freebies’ down low. They should be up by about 6-7 points right now.

Well good job, Michigan
wrong end of a 3-12 second half start…I don’t know why I even pay attention to this stupid challenge.
I guess I just wanted it to come down to Northwestern.

There's still plenty of time there
For Mich to come back.

No inside defense, on either side.
Also, and maybe this was covered before I got here…but is that logo really necessary?

Not too surprising
This is what happens when you play only a 7-man rotation. Woodyard and Babb should see a little PT

Commentators need to call a foul?
I’m sorry, but if the refs can’t figure out which player made a foul… doesn’t that mean there wasn’t a foul? Terrible.

Is the Big Ten Network spoiling me?
Are these guys partial to GT and the ACC or is it just a bad perception that I have from watching the Big Ten Network?
well, safe to say saunders and valvano know zip about B10 and PSU
hoopraker: the rakes offer some takes on big ten basketball
man
battle is also full-go towards the basketball. I think sometimes he takes off before Penn State even has the ball.
Danny Morrissey, dare I say...

no dount. slowing the ball down in transition would be nice
need a defensive stop

this is the point in the game...
where we could really use a better presence inside… pound the ball inside and get easy 2s or draw fouls… hopefully someone will step up

Another nice set play
Everyone gets the hell out of the way and lets Pringle take it to the bucket all by himself.

Free throws
Please don’t lose this game because of poor free throw shooting
I think you gotta take those points
the way we keep missing the front end.
Kevin @ Black Shoe Diaries
Goddamnit
DJ should’ve tried for the lay-up instead of bringin the ball out. Now we gotta shoot FT’s again
Happy Hour Valley - Where the beer flows like wine
http://happyhourvalley.wordpress.com/
he should have layed that in for an easy two...
the way we have been shooting ft’s, take the easy 2

Unless we start making FT’s…But I’m not holding my breath.

Ha
The announcers. “They can’t get to the finish line fast enough”
Ouch, bad shot by G Tech to end it
He had two more steps at least. Good thing he rushed it.
WE OWN
The Big Ten / ACC Challenge!
Hahaha. Are we, like, the only Big Ten to win?
Nevermind.
5-4. ESPN2 just answered my question.
Well
Michigan lost, which means this “challenge” is pretty much over. MSU and Northwestern are not the two teams you want in control of the last leg.
Kevin @ Black Shoe Diaries
I doubt MSU can beat NC
but this is the closest it’s been ever I think, especially if Northwestern can knock off FSU
Yeeesh
Too close for comfort, but I’ll gladly take it. If we can beat Temple this Saturday, and don’t pull a Stony Brook over our remaining OOC slate, we’ll be 12-1 going into the Big Ten schedule.

The team isn't anything to write home about but...
a win is a win. Nice job guys, even though you did almost blow it.
"For every moment of triumph, for every instance of beauty, many souls must be trampled"- Hunter S. Thompson
Good one
Every team has those days, and we finally got a win. You guys gotta have more faith in our squad, they’ll get it together.
I was out in the trenches, which enables me to paint such a powerful picture, like Apocalypse Now.-Cormega
It's an improvement...
in the past few years, we wouldn’t have even still been in that game. To think we can play 39 minutes of good ball and still win? I’ll easily take it. Promising sign for what may come.
Bottom Line: ACC Road Win! Whew...I'll take it
This team “could” be tourney bound…if it all breaks right. Hope is fun.
good win, those free throws misses made my eyes bleed.
I am watching the other 2 games, MSU does not have a chance. Northwestern looks like my 35+ basketball league, not pretty. At least we held up our end of the bargain(2 years in a row).
We just needed a couple players, a couple people to buy in to the fact and we were able to do it. --A.Q. Shipley

Not that I am surprised, but the highlights were all GT making shots, Cornley missing the last FT, and GT missing the prayer. Still no respect for PSU basketball. Keep working boys, sooner or later they will catch on.
Fuck yeah!
Just saw the highlights on ESPN
Penn St bball 7-?! I love it!
I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
I wasn't able to join the open thread last night
but I was able to watch the second half of the game, which was only the second game this year I’ve been able to watch.
My comments:
- Watching that game, at least the second half, was like watching Big 12 football…but with less offense.
- I know our FT shooting hasn’t been stellar this year, but man that final sequence was rough. At least we made one!
- Didn’t that out of bounds ball go off our foot? Did the ref not see it? Did the ref figure that GT “knocked” it out, even though it bounced off of us? I thought that was still OB on us…
- Speaking of out of bounds (and I’m not a huge basketball person, so I could be waaaaay off on this one), but I thought the top of the backboard was out of bounds. Neither the refs nor the announcers questioned it, so that leads me to believe I’m wrong, but I swear I’ve seen that called out of bounds before (perhaps in HS or NBA, though?)…or maybe the rule has changed
- Great to see us hold up our end of the ACC/Big 10 challenge for the second year in a row. Speaking of which, I have no idea why ($$$) the UNC game wasn’t on campus at MSU, but man Ford Field, while probably still as many people (maybe even more) as the Breslen last night, looked so much emptier and quieter. That game sucked, though.
- And Finally: without BSD I probably wouldn’t have turned the game on last night and would have just been at the bar with some friends watching the MSU game, so thanks for providing this great community for us to talk about Penn State sports!
Schwew!
We almost blew that thing last night but the win is huge and boy does it feel good. I did not see the game but listened to it on radio. GT is a big team and it really shows how much we e need big man help. That would make a huge difference. We would be able to get our mid sized players were they need to play instead of playing out of position. I am not surprised we won. I think we would have put this thing in books with our foul shooting if we had a little more experience. The guys who missed are actually decent foul shooters. I think they knew how big this game was for their season and choked on the line.
Our undersized front court and thin bench definitely hurt us and will continue to hurt us all season. We have a few things going for us that make us pretty tough to play. Our guard play and shooting is pretty good. Another thing that is in our favor is our toughness. This team plays with a lot of heart. When you watch them a few times you realize how hard they are trying. I have only seen us get out hustled by a team once or twice and that was when our players were just dead tired.
I am very happy for Ed and the boys. They have worked really hard for years now and it is nice to get some reconition.
Temple is up next. I think it is a different challege but again a winnable game for us!
