If this is too political than kill it.

But here is an article that states Graham Spanier is under consideration for the Secretary of Education in Obama's White House. Spanier is orginally from Illinois and he also holds a PhD from Northwestern so it's not illogical for him to have some ties to Obama and the Chicago education scene. Not to mention he's been active in various boards across education.

Some PSU alumni cabinet members are:

Barbara Hackman Franklin- Former US Secretary of Commerce

William Perry- Former Secretary of Defense

Richard Schweiker- Former Secretary of Health and Human Services

I know there are some divided opinions on Spainer but I think this would reflect well on the University. Thoughts?

SWEET

Can’t wait to see if taxes go up 10% every year like tuition.

I'm not surprised

With as much time Obama and Hillary spent in State College during the primary season I’m sure Spanier had ample opportunity to rub elbows with them both. I think it’s obviously good for the university when your president takes a high level post like that. I’m not familiar enough with Spaniers political leanings to tell if this would be good for the country or not.

Since this post is Penn State related I’ll allow it to continue as long as things don’t get too ugly in which case I will shut it down. Just keep it in this post and keep it clean.

What about comments

on whether Hillary is hawt? Or Spanier, for that matter. Do those stay?

Politics

I hate mixing it with sports as much as the next guy so it’s fine with me if you kill it if it gets out of hand. It’s relevant to Joe’s contract though if he leaves before negotiations have to happen.

by psuphiman80 on Dec 3, 2008 10:23 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

More importantly -- does this mean Joe could outlast the Prez?

Every single hypothetical I’ve read in recent years is predicated on Spanier being our President. If he leaves, is there an obvious successor? What do we know about that person’s feelings of Joe Paterno?

What I’m getting at is this: If Spanier leaves, does that help or hurt an in-house successor to Joe Paterno? What if the next guy is best-buddies with Jay? What if Spanier’s successor is friggin Scott Paterno?!?

by millzners on Dec 3, 2008 10:20 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

alternatively

what if the new guy comes in, says “F it” to tradition (like DickRod), etc., fires Paterno, and brings in someone loathesome to “win it” who then replaces all the coaching staff, “updates” the uniforms, and “updates” the Nittany Lion.

I doubt that would happen, but it isn’t completely out of the realm of possibilities for someone to come in and try to make their mark.

Paterno

Is waaaay more bulletproof than the number 1 jersey.

by psuphiman80 on Dec 3, 2008 10:30 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

We could change our colors to a firey flourecent blue and cream, make the nittany lion look like he’s taken steriods, then pay some hip young guy from Nike to update the uniforms a little. Hey maybe a cool new font for the numbers:

I will seriously stop being a PSU football fan if any of those things occur.

by millzners on Dec 3, 2008 11:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I would just develop a computer program

that would take the signal from the cable/whatever and digitally add back the traditional blue and white uniforms. If I attend in person I will somehow make video goggles that do the same thing.

Better scenario

What if Spanier’s successor is……….Joe Paterno?

OK, it's not really a Penn State alumni in the cabinet, but...

he has the same name as me & I’m a Penn State alumni & it’s a really unusual name - Elihu Root was the Secretary of State under Teddy Roosevelt. He has no relationship to me other than the same first name.

Yes, that's my first name.

It’s from the Jewish prophet’s name that is usually anglicized to Elijah, but my parents chose to anglicize it to Elihu. No, I’ve never met anybody with my name.

If you didn’t think it was a first name, what did you think it was? One time a friend of mine used my email account to send something to another friend, who didn’t know me. The second friend thought the first friend had made up a name to be funny.

I just figured it was like a random screen name

I mean my first name is neither “The”, “Jugger”, nor “Nitt” (though it is Matt, so I suppose I share the last 2 letters). I mean heck, it could have been like “El liot H erbert U nger” or something like that, and you just shortened it to Elihu. :-D I just didn’t know that it was actually a name.

Won the Nobel Peace prize I believe

Mediated the conclusion of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905 and developed the modern diplomatic arbitration process. Not a bad guy to have the same first name.

I feel like I have to tie this to PSU sports… umm… Shorty Miller was a young tike in 1905.

Ok now you guys got me scared

We’re about to find ourselves in a position where we have to replace a football coach who has been entrenched for over 40 years. I would prefer that the person who makes the decision on our next coaching hire have a familiarity and understanding of the culture at Penn State. Spanier has been around for, what, 13 years now? I don’t agree with all of his policies, but at least he’s been around long enough to understand the delicate politics of the situation. If he goes, my worst fear would be the board hiring an outsider like Spanier was. I think it would be bad for Penn State football if they brought in someone who has no appreciation for Penn State football. I could see them hiring some female west coast lawyer type for the job hell bent on academics and could barely give a damn about football. When you bring in people from the outside you run the risk of having their cronies overrun your program. Or they make brash uninformed decisions like hiring Bill Callahan at Nebraska. This could be very bad.

by BSD on Dec 3, 2008 10:46 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Probably not.

This was brought up to Phil Grosz 2 weeks ago in a Q&A. His rsponse was that he didnt think Spanier would leave because it would be an “astounding” pay cut.

by Cairo on Dec 3, 2008 10:50 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Plus his job at PSU is probably going to last longer than the 4 or 8 years he’ll have with Obama.

by millzners on Dec 3, 2008 11:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not too concerned...

…b/c i don’t see the Trustees hiring anyone that doesn’t have Tradition and Football first and foremost on their mind. and Paterno would sure to have a huge imput…

No way PSU brings in some maverick that will change a lot of things.

Spanier

I’m pretty sure that Spanier’s name gets thrown around for the Secretary of Education post every time its vacant. I could be wrong, but I think he was even mentioned as a darkhorse during the Bush years (Spanier’s a Democrat). He’s apparently been angling for that job for a while.

I guess I wouldn’t mind seeing Graham Cracker in the administration, although I’ve heard some other names for that job that seem more likely.

Regarding the head coaching job, I don’t think it would be a big worry if Spanier left. Even if they bring someone in who doesn’t care about football at all, it would be professional suicide to castrate the most popular person at the school. A new president would let JoePa have his agenda, probably moreso than Spanier (though I’m definitely in the school of thought that says it’s Joe not Spanier, who is in control of the situation).

I wouldn't trust old rooster me neither.

yeah don't forget

Spanier couldn’t even get Joe to quit
