Vidal Hazelton Transfering
Well the one that got away is actually getting away from the place he got away to...if that makes sense. Hazelton is transfering from USC. Peter has already signed off on the transfer. He is a Junior and is transfering for family reasons. Obviously Penn State is not going to take a run at him because he only has 1 year of eligibility left. I'm assuming he take the FCS (1-AA) route. Delaware or James Madison are local enough to Virginia to make sense.

Big fish, bigger pond
I wonder if he ever thinks what could’ve happened if he’d listened to his family and played for us. He undoubtedly would’ve had more playing time while being closer to his family, and wouldn’t have to transfer to some AA school for his final season.

indeed
I understand the lure of wanting to go to USC to win national championships every year (wait…what? They haven’t won since 2004? And their “title” in 2003 is only as real as Penn State’s 1994 NY Times Computer National Championship? You must be talking about a different USC), and I guess every HS recruit thinks they’re a world beater, but I’m always surprised at the talent that goes to these schools just to sit on the bench (though they always do have a lot of transfers out, I’m surprised there aren’t more)

Pete Carroll's recruiting statement, and for whatever reason it works
Practice time at USC is more competitive and will get you to the NFL easier then playing time at [insert your school here]

Dad's know best
Maybe he should have listened to his Pops and not the smooth talker Petey Carroll. His dad tried his best, at one point didn’t he even not sign off on it at one point and forced Vidal to take an official to PSU?

Vidal only prepped in VA but he's not from VA
He’s a NY kid so I think Hofstra may get a nice player.
When we’re young we learn by making mistakes. Vidal made one. He’ll learn from it.

Our recruiters need to make an example out of this situation
Tell the kids: “Petey or Urban may promise you you’re going to start your freshman year and be a star at your position, but they’re telling the same thing to about 10 other kids right now AND they have about 10 kids ALREADY on the roster at your position.”
These kids are getting scammed because they’re young and naive. Just because you’re a 5-star recruit playing for USC or Florida doesn’t mean you’ll get playing time and get drafted. Meanwhile if you go to a school that will worship you (ie PSU and D Will) you’re going to have the spotlight every single game from the moment you step on campus.

Asked my friend who's on one of the pay sites
Here’s what he sent from a thread:
apparently ole Dexter and Vidal contacted Joe last night.
I really don’t need to share what was said.

Transfers
When was the last time we even took a transfer anyways? I know usually big programs don’t need it, and I can’t remember a big one that we’ve taken(besides those juco o-linemen recently)

Last year
We had a Michigan transfer on the defensive line. Chris Rogers was his name I think. But we didn’t give him a scholarship. He was a walk-on. I think that is the only circumstance in which we would take a transfer.

The tailback...
Who was the tailback who wanted to transfer [alegedly] to PSU back in the fall? The story was that we told him no too.

Second USC Transfer
Hazelton is the second USC transfer this year. Broderick Green was the other. Both of them were deciding between PSU and USC, and of course like always, we lose out to USC in recruiting. Why couldn’t they have just come to us instead?

When Green said yes to USC
they already had ~4 other big-time RBs that had committed to USC. I guess each kid thinks that he is gonna be the next big star (or maybe that’s what the coaches tell them!)
The lesson here is “Come to Penn State”.

I don't know
Everything I’ve read indicates Pete Carroll tells them like it is: open competition and we’ve got a lot of talent. But, you will have every opportunity to compete. They’re kids and think they’re the shit. And confidently believe they can compete. Others, like that Temple qb, go where this is no in-team competition, with the understanding that they can get right on the field and compete against the actual opposing team competition.

What you said.
About the only position that’s got some degree of protection is a returning starter QB. Other than that, players can work their way into contention – SC had a true freshman starting on the offensive line last year, IIRC, and he played well until he was injured.
It’s up to the player in question. I can’t speak for most SC alums, but the ones I know thought that it perhaps best for Green to transfer – if he’s not happy, he should find another school to play for, and do it while he has some eligibility. It’s too bad, he’s a good player, but his job is to do what’s right for him, not remain in situ just to prove a point.

Backup QB
USC does have open competitions every week. Aaron Corp started the season as the number 2 but eventually lost out to Mitch Mustain….what happens with Matt Barkley shows up on campus? Hey Corp, fill out your transfer request now….
