Star-divide

I'm an Iowa alum and fan living in Dallas, and have spent too much time on BHGP and SB Nation (BSD, Maize and Brew, et al) this fall.  Thank god college football season is almost over so I can be more productive.  BHGP has been poking at NU and Minny fans the last few weeks, which has been fun out of all proportion.  With that as background, it's become apparent PSU fans as a group are on the very short list for the best, but absolutely the most gracious, in the Big Televen. Even after the miracle that was the game that must not be named, PSU fans congratulated BHGP on the thread.  Iowa has its share of dicks (certainly NU thinks so) but with our fball history (spotty) the majority realizes how ridiculous we are even as we care a little too much. That being said, OU and UT fans have no sense of humor about anything. Try looking at their blogs at night.  Yikes.

So, I hope PSU pummels USC (I hate those guys), but I'll be happy if you all just win.  Beat the holy hell out of them, wipe away the smirk, please win.

Thank You

We (PSU fans as a whole) try not to be too douchey. We know that sometimes teams have better days or we don’t play the way we know we are capable of.

We want to treat visiting fans the way we want to be treated when we visit their stadiums. Of course you’ll have excpetions to the rule and they ruin for the whole bunch (see Philadelphia sports fans who get a bum rep because snowballs and batteries).

You are correct that OU and Texas fans have no sense of humor. All they have is their football programs and they will not be told otherwise…

Thanks for the compliments

And read this link if you want a perfect summary of the Penn State football experience and why we call it Happy Valley: http://www.blackshoediaries.com/2008/12/4/682144/teach-them-once-and-for-al

Fanbases

Yeah, I’m still wondering about USC’s. I’ve been peeking in on Conquest Chronicles to see what I can learn.

So far, tho, it’s mostly just that we’re just spoiled being Penn State fans.

You Iowa fans are pretty cool, too. I love the sense of humor. BHGP cracks my ass up! Yeah, more we talk about it, lack of sense of humor really contributes to doucheyness in college football fans.

USC's fan base is a hit or miss-- your average fan base

Generally, they are very cordial people. But it’s almost a condescending cordial. They are nice, because they are on top. I’ve heard horror stories about their fans during the Hackett years (when USC was awful), and how they become just your average rich preppy school fans— the whole “superior” education thing really bugs me it comes to trash talk; the whole “yeah you won, but you’ll be bagging my groceries” is bogus. Every school as it positives and negatives, and every school produces educated people.

Anyways, from my experiences, if you’re nice to SC, they’ll be nice to you. I would imagine that a Penn State-SC match up is exciting for both fan bases, and they’ll welcome you guys to their home neutral field in a neutral city… I can’t wait. OSU-Pitt on the 31st, PSU-USC on the 1st. Will be a great 2 days of football

I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

wait...USC thinks they're an academically superior school?

this is news to me. I’m not saying they’re academically poor, and I would probably rate them above average, but I wouldn’t place them with the Michigans, Notre Dames, or Stanfords of the world.

Also, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE demolish Pitt for us. PLEASE!!! At least that’ll shut up all of their “We beat Iowa” comments. Also, then Pitt will lose.

Thanks

It was pretty sad to watch some of the Texas fans come on BSD and flame US after they lost to TEXAS TECH.

I think sometimes everyone has to step back and realize that we’re all just fans of a game played by a bunch of 18-23 year old kids. Nothing that happens in this sport could possibly justify some of the hostility you see out there.

Don't forget about BYU

Lotta kids go on their missions before joining the football team so you see quite a few 25+ year old seniors on that team. Many people don’t realize that about BYU and there is an advantage to be had putting a couple more years in the gym before becoming a freshman.

The absolute truth

When the final whistle sounds, it’s still just a game, and, in theory, should be entertainment.
Far too many people don’t see it that way anymore.
Nice job keeping that in perspective.

Oscillating is a fun word.

John Madden told me 90% of the game was half-mental...

Iowa: a team I'd rather lose to than

Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin or anyone else outside our conference; after MSU’s double TO I’m willing to give them an honorable mention.

Iowa fans are good people, their program is one I respect, and I will be rooting for them in their bowl. None of these things are true of the other teams I just rattled off.

by millzners on Dec 5, 2008 2:09 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

you sure you don't want to root for Illinois or Michigan in their bowl?

…..heh………hehehehehe………..HEHEHEHEHEHEHEE……………BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA

For the record

BHGP is going to get me fired from work. It’s taking way too much energy to stifle laughing that much. As an outsider, reading your argument with the NU fan over who’s going to the better bowl is classic stuff.

Somewhere between a humbling first half of the decade, and our lack of a real “identity” in college football, I think the fanbase has just become more focused on enjoying good football. The majority of our rivalries have either been thinned due to lacked of play, or are “forced” since we joined the Big Ten. It’s sorta given us the chance to perfect our tailgating and the whole football-weekend experience. :)

Sure, we’ve learned to hate the teams you need to hate in the Big Ten. As for the rest of the conference, well, there’s just a lot of hard-nosed, hard-working teams. And win or lose, that’s a style of football we can respect.

Hey Icersguy...

Do we play Iowa in club hockey? How are they? Any chance they could move up to D1, as well?

No Iowa at ACHA D1

The only other Big Ten school that has an ACHA D1 team is Illinois. (As a quick note, Penn State actually has TWO teams at the ACHA D1 level – Penn State Berks just made the jump to D1 this year.)

Our D1 teams usually doesn’t face any of the D2 teams, especially now that we’re in a “league” (4 teams we have to face 4 times a season – 2 home, 2 away), plus our normal “rivalry” games. Doesn’t give us much space to take on the D2 teams. But all of the Big Ten schools (except Purdue) have a team at the ACHA D2 level.

Isn’t Michigan and Michigan State NCAA D1?

by MrBrianPSU on Dec 6, 2008 8:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think he means 'in addition to...' their actual major club

I used to watch Wisky’s team come up to Anchorage and lay waste to us when we were a newbie jumper to the major level. They must have a club (think minors) team, as well

Sorry

yes, as TME noted, it’s in addition to their NCAA D1 teams. Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin, Minnesoter, and Ohio State all of NCAA D1 teams. We’d like to become #6.

(Also saw that Marquette has an ACHA D2 team – just another reason to keep hoping I can get into their grad school…)

man... Icersguy gots me learning and crap

after seeing tOSU has a team (pissed) I decided to cruise wikipedia to see who else has got teams. Kinda depressing seeing how some tiny schools have NCAA D1 teams and we can’t get us over the edge on it. I did, however, see that I now have 2 D1 teams to pull for. My aforementioned UAA Seawolves and my beloved Air Force Falcons!

Hey Icersguy… so as long as we’re a club the teams are referred to as the ‘Icers’ and the ‘Berks’? We would then be the Nittany Lions if we moved up? What is a Berk? I need to know these things! Thanks!

Commonwealth Campus

http://www.bk.psu.edu/default.htm

Penn State Berks is in Reading, PA.

You can see them hold up a sign during the All-University Day at the football games. There seems to be a distinct corollary that if a Big Ten team faces PSU during All-University Day, that team will end the season 6-6.

my bad! Thanks for the info!

Didn’t realize there was a campus there. For a short time I was going to enroll in the York campus (the original family nest) but I did the military route for my education.
