The arrogance never ends, and it isn't limited to disdain for Penn State

bq. "A few folks e-mailed, though, with a "ha ha" for USC for not making the championship game, and to criticize Carroll for allowing his team to enjoy itself too much.

The Orange County Register highlighted one comment in Monday's newspaper from Huntington Beach's Bev Airhart: "Pete Carroll says that's just USC being USC. You mean immature, taunting, and arrogant? Such a non-class football team! Hopefully they'll be humbled and humiliated in the Rose Bowl -- then their antics can be squashed while Penn St. does their own dancing."

Penn State doesn't have a chance against USC, but then I understand frustrated UCLA fans wanting to knock the cross-town rival and diminish the coach's achievements because they don't have a football team to follow anymore this season.

They probably had their hearts set on following the team to yet another Emerald Bowl."

"Penn State doesn't have a chance against USC"

I emailed the writer and begged him to tell that to Joe’s face. I told him that he didn’t have the nerve and that Joe would verbally slap him around the room.

I hope his articles are ready daily by the Trojans!

Good grief

This guy feels the need to fellate Coach Carroll – why? Increased access? Additional press passes? Or just feeling the need for a bit of ManLove?

Does it never occur to these types that with the beautiful SoCal weather and Hollywood surroundings, many people see 2 things happening: 1) 5-star recruits flock there (some even for the football), and 2) Carroll ALWAYS finds a way to lose to teams with considerably less talent.

Even though his roster has third-team players that could start for nearly anyone else, how many times in the last 3 years has his team been dumped by a 2 or 3 )or more) touchdown dog?

That makes a great coach? What am I missing?

“Always gets the most of his players”? You mean – except when he doesn’t?

Yes, he’s a good coach and recruiter in SoCal. But have you truly seen anyone do less with more?

GREAT coaches do more with less. Carroll isn’t one of them.

This ‘writer’ should get his face out of Carroll’s crotch and start looking around beyond the sunny confines of the USC campus.

Get some perspective, Dude.

That's just it

unless you grew up as a fan of a “northern” school, and outside of a shot at starting earlier at some of the northern schools, why would anyone no to playing in SoCal or Miami? I know if I had no ties to Penn State and I was offered a scholarship at both schools, I think I’d choose the sun year round and a beach over the wintery mountains of central PA…well except if I wanted the ultimate gameday experience, and fans that actually loved me and my team.

Obviously there are certain schools up north with enough tradition to draw in recruits, but it is of course no suprise that Syracuse and Buffalo don’t have the greatest football programs.

And yes, you would think that with the inherent recruiting advantage coaching for USC that a 10-11 win regular season would be pretty on par, and wouldn’t take any sort of coaching genius (though Charlie Weis kinda disproves that a bit).

True to an extent, but there's way more to it also

There are plenty of southern schools like UCLA, Arizona and Az State (bad comparisons, but all I got off the top of my head), etc that haven’t had anything close to the success of USC recently. The guy’s got a lot of talent to consistently bring in those kinds of players. I mean, it’s not like there is any fishy recruiting or anything. Certainly no agents running around the locker room that would sway kids to go there. What there are?! No way!

Location, location, location

This is something my Rutgers alumni friends are always complaining about. Why would a kid choose New Brunswick NJ over somewhere like State College or L.A.? That’s why I’m always so impressed with a coach in an out of the way place like Boise who can produce such an excellent team.
