Pryor Recruiting Tactic?

< a=href http://www.centredaily.com/news/breaking_news/story/411657.html a>

Just found this on the CDT website. While a casual fan will glance at this article and think "Joe is doing something good for people again", a more knowledgable fan may question the motives behind the story.

"PENN State Coach Joe Paterno has worked hard to bring awareness to Charcot- Marie-Tooth disorder."

While that seems like good philanthrophy, it should be noted that this is the exact disease that uber-recruit Tyrelle Pryor's father suffers from. I have not been able to find a link that discusses how long Joe has been involved in this endeavor. So it is nearly impossible to comment any further about the possible recruiting implications. I will leave that up for time to tell. I am just pointing a beam of light upon a story that seems fishy.

Thanks for the fanpost! Please do not post any content from a premium site that requires a subscription. Also, if you just want to share a link, quote, or video, please consider using fanshots instead. Thanks.

um, no...
Joe has been doing public service announcements (on TV) about CMT disorder for years.

This Question Is......
a prime example of why you don't do certain things until you have built up some currency.  The little things matter.

If you have years of philanthropic history, then you can suddenly involved yourself in certain things (charitities for instance) and usually be above suspicion.  If you haven't built up that currency (Rich Rodiquez cough cough) then you look slimy.

I have never seen the commercials, so I'll defer to BrioHondo as to whether this is a non-issue as it pertains to perception and Pryor.

Only in the world of college football recruiting
is giving to charity borderline sleazy.

It's sure better than Jim Tressell having a meet and greet at a high school where he just signed a major recruit a few hundred miles from Columbus.

If you read what I wrote...
I said I would refrain from commenting about this. I lived in the State College area for over 23 years and hung on every word Paterno ever said in public. I cannot recall any commercials, but he does have a proven record of charitable causes... I just wonder about when he actually came into this field because someone with knowledge about the Pryor recruitment may question the timing of this article. That is all

I don't remember
if it ran on TV, but I'll never forget the giant billboard  it in Wilkes Barre. It was so close to the road it looked like Joe was hovering over traffic.

There were
giant billboards in Altoona as well.

I don't think this is a tactic just to get Pryor.  However, I do think this helps our standing with his family, if Mr. Pryor has the disease.

It may be the lucky break PSU has been waiting for over the last couple years.

There was Joe Paterno Water too...
I believe it was AquaFina, but it was a while ago.

The CMT stuff has been going on for at least a year, the CMT-Association was a sponser of the PSU Pre-game show all season long.

I am cartain that this is a non-issue. JoePa would not mug for a charity just to get at a recruit.

Let me also point out...
That I am a firm believer in Joe's philosophy and handling of the team. I am in support of him leaving on HIS terms. I just felt this article was worth our attention in cause some scUM bag throws it in our faces later.

It
says that Paterno has recently became involved in commercials. Vague reporting, and with Joe's track record prolly nothing here.

by carolinaeasy on Feb 19, 2008 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

He has
been doing commercials for them for over a year.

by JGuiher on Feb 19, 2008 1:21 PM EST reply actions

Joe's been doing this for years.
A bought a Christmas ornament from George's Floral in State College a year ago modeled after Joe's likeness and it came with a little card saying that 1/2 the proceeds went to CMT.

Unless Joe knew Pryor was going to be the #1 recruit 20 years ago when he started campaigning this disease, I think we're pretty safe on the conspiracy charge.

by ignition719 on Feb 19, 2008 1:21 PM EST reply actions

Well then...
I think the CDT needs to mention that he has been doing it for over 20 years, rather than say "recently he has been appearing in commercials". That leaves alot unanswered, sorry to raise a stink, like I said before the timing of this article seemed fishy to me.

by carolinaeasy on Feb 19, 2008 1:28 PM EST up reply actions

Well,
To be fair to you, I don't live in State College so I don't see these commercials (and when I was in college I hardly ever watched local channels) ever. I do know that radio commercials the last 3 seasons have been pretty regular (at least on ESPN radio based out of Pittsburgh - of which I only listen to here in Cleveland if the game's not on TV or I'm driving somewhere I can't watch the game).

by ignition719 on Feb 20, 2008 10:03 AM EST up reply actions

what commericals
What commercials? Is this on TV or radio? What channel? I never have seen him doing a TV commercial, not even for over 20 years.

Game Broadcasts
Its hard to listen to a PSU game on the radio, basketball or football, and not hear the CMT add at least 5 times.  I can remeber it even last season.  Its a staple of the flagship ads, and Steve Jones also mentions it coming in and out of timeouts at least once per game.  I doubt this is a Pryor ploy.

Bumping the subject...

Has anybody heard anything about Pryor lately?  After announcing he was delaying his decision, things sure have quieted down.  Somebody have the scoop?
