JoePa and the future.....

A lot of bitching has been done about JoePa on this site and others.   I have discussed the head coaching situation with a lot of people here in Atlanta and it seems to me that there is no consensus on Paterno's future past 2008.  I personally think Joe has done so much not only for Penn State football but the University as a whole that he should get to leave on his own terms when he wants to.  He certainly should not be run out by a yahoo like Spanier!  There seems to be a short memory on a lot of PSU fans these days!  2005 (Big Ten Champs at 11-1 and we got F*d as always by the officials at Michigan, but for that... PSU may have been playing Texas for the Title) 2006 - 9-4, 2007 9-4.   Although I agree the last two years have been disappointing, those are not the kind of numbers that make you run a coach out of town....let alone Joe Paterno!  As for this season and you Tom Bradley lovers....to me the defense was the biggest disappointment.  Illinois was a debacle and If defense didn't blow a 17 pt. lead against MSU, Penn State is probably 10-3.  Also, I would ask who Penn State going to hire for $500,000.00 a season?  RR "scum of the earth" signed with Michigan for about 2 mill a year.  Any coach worth bringing in to replace Paterno is going to cost the University major dollars!  So....If Spanier does suceed and fails to renew Joe's contract who does PSU bring in?  On my knees praying to heaven....PLEASE not TOM BRADLEY!  I personally like Schiano (though many of my family members disagree).  He is a smart guy (Bucknell grad)with ties to the Penn State program and has the ability to generate a lot of enthusiam.  His FL (U of M) ties should also help generate a larger recruiting base.  Although he has turned down Michigan and Miami, I have reliable information that he WOULD NOT turn down Penn State.  It is said that PSU is the ONLY school he would leave Rutgers for!  But.....if not Schiano.....who's next?

Not to split atoms...
But even if they did beat Michigan in '05 they wouldn't have made the title game, the media was set on Texas and USC. We would have been the ugly step sister.

I think that people aren't as mad about the record, as they are the fact that not many players seem to progress under the current regime, now that is not at every position, as several coaches do a FINE job. But there is a lack of improvement, and a feeling like PSU does not evolve with the times. Lets face it, our head coach rarely visits recruits anymore, If you do not think that hurts us you have your head in the sand.

I agree Paterno needs to go on his terms, but if he cannot see the writing on the wall, then sadly, someone will NEED to force his hand quietly. I hope if it comes to that, everyone takes the high road.

You give too much credit....
Not that we will ever find out, but I think you give both Texas and USC too much credit.  The 05 defense would have kept us in the game against either opponent. Don't forget that Texas barely came out of Columbus with a victory that year (25-22) and the Buckeyes squandered a lot of opportunities in that game!  As for JayPa not making my list....I didn't want to include a scenario that would signal the arrival of Armageddon!
I thought only safeties played 15 yards off the ball?

I Was......
basing that comment completely on the fact that it took us 3 OTs to beat a 23rd ranked 7-5 FSU team.

vs. Texas or USC
Florida State usually plays pretty well in Bowl Games (18-8-1 since 1980).  I also think that FSU was better defensively than both teams, and coached better in all resepects than Texas, and in many respects USC.

It's also pretty rare that Penn State ever gets its ass truly kicked in a bowl game, to the extent it happens, there is usually a pretty good reason.

I think they might have beat Texas, but would probably would have lost to USC.

Also, Florida State was 8-4.

The State of State
Not pretty. The Sporting News isnt crazy about things right now. I'm down on things but I think we have a top 10 team next year. Oh wel, here's the bad news.  2 out of the top 15 in PA isnt going to cut it. I dont think this class is that bad at all, just small. Pryor would help tremendoucly, but I would be SHOCKED.

Penn State. Another middling class is further proof that this no longer is an elite national program. Heck, it can be argued Penn State no longer is an elite Big Ten program, with the Nittany Lions clearly behind Ohio State, Michigan and Illinois and no better than Wisconsin and Iowa. Yes, this is a small class of Nits, but keep this in mind: Penn State landed just two of Pennsylvania's Top 15 players, according to Rivals.com. Losing RB Michael Shaw to Michigan on signing day hurt.
Top players: LB Brandon Beachum; LB Mike Yancich; LB Mike Zordich

Who are other people thinking of that vote "Other"? Al Golden? Or are you voting "Other" because you don't like any of the options?
