Shocker: Pryor to Ohio State

I see the site meter is going through the roof, so I guess people are waiting for me to make some kind of comment on Terrelle Pryor. As if you all haven't known for months already, he's going to Ohio State.

Anyone who hasn't known this for the past few months hasn't been paying attention. And anyone who woke up this morning still holding on to hope he would wear the Blue and White is just dumb. The signs of this have been on the wall forever.

We're not going to trash the kid in this space. He had to make the decision that was right for him. We wish him luck, except when he's playing against Penn State.

What bothers me are the comments he had to say in his press conference. Take a look at what he had to say about Penn State.

Pryor also had high praise for Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, who recruited him for the Nittany Lions.

"I would've had Penn State higher and would've considered them more if I knew coach Bradley was going to be the head coach when Joe Paterno retires," Pryor said.

So there you have it. If Bradley was either the coach or named the successor it may have been a different story. The longer the administration delays in addressing Joe's contract situation the more recruits we're going to lose.

good ridance I hope that playing for himself pays off for tOSU...on a side note I like his quote in there about PSU being in the country how do you grow up in PA and not know that I really don't think this kid is the brightest bulb in the locker room...I think this shows how much recruiting over multiple years helps (in reality squat) he says he would have considered us higher but not that he would have picked us if Tom was the new coach and I would rather have Devlin play well this year and have them work hard recruiting force or another good QB than to get another over-hyped player here...Morelli and Scott blew the whole HS hype factor for me anymore recruiting is a crap shoot and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't

doubtful, but proved what's been said on blogs for a while now. It's a shame that the only people that don't know this are the ones in charge. Well, with this commitment, at least we can fully focus on recruiting the 09 class now

damn

that's just disturbing when an 18 year old kid weights his decision against our program because of no succession plan. he, and others, do not know what PSU's direction is for the future.

That, and maybe that under the "coaching" of Jay, we haven't had a QB rated better than 7th in the B10 with regards to passing efficiency.

Dammit, name a succession plan, and get rid of jay.

O and i am so dominating the BSD NCAA bracket already. check the stats out-tied for first! wait a sec...

Please no succession plan with Tom Bradley! His defensive schemes have cost us BIG GAMES! Again I ask....what other school in the conference let alone the country has corners that can run a 4.31 playing 15 deep? Let's move forward with Devlin or Clark in '08 and pick up Forcier or Savage in the '09 class.

Losing the RB to Michigan was a bigger loss than not getting Pryor!

BTW.....RR scumboy has no QB for next year and he is about to go through a protracted legal battle starting next month!

NO...

Had our offense not been so god damn enemic, and complimented our defense, then I would agree with you about Bradley and his defensive schemes.
Most of the games we lost over the past several seasons, our defense kept us in it....now if the offense could've &(should've) put some points on the board, those L's would have been W's.

05 Michigan.....

Though the refs gave the game to Michigan. Bradley's defense really lost the game.

08 Michigan State.....

There is no way we should lose that game with how many points the offense put up.

This kid is clearly a punk

He's got some nerve thinking he can have sway on what Joe will and will not do regarding his plans at PSU. Also, if Tom Bradley wants a head coaching position so bad maybe he ought to get out there and interview for one. We use to say at my old company, "no one is holding you back from leaving..." and that is true of any field. I hope Joe sticks around for as long as he wants. When he's gone from this earth there will never be another like him, ever. So people saying that he should retire now might want to think about that for a minute. The man has already outlived most of his critics. Critics said he couldn't get the job done but look at 2005. They were 2 seconds from being champs of it all. I say give the man another long term contract, because he's earned it on and off the field. Then this "uncertainty" that people reference in all these publications will be a non-issue.

Look, one kid like this isn't going to make or break a great institution like PSU. We did well this year and next year it would not surprise me to see them in that championship game.

My fear was we were going to lose Devlin if we got Pryor and I think Devlin is a better "quarterback" prospect.

QB Battle

If we'd gotten Pryor, we would have had a quarterback CONTROVERSEY instead of a good clean competition by two highly competent QBs in Clark and Devlin. THrowing Pryor into the mix would have thrown a wrench into that.

I'm looking foward to 2008, and getting Pryor doesnt really change how I feel.

As for him going to tOSU, I give a big "who cares". Sure, Herby may be slobbering all over him, but I don't think I could care less. We stopped Troy Smith twice, and Bocekman toar us to shreds. GIve me the troy Smith game play, and I feel better about our matchup with them than with a passer.

when

did we stop troy smith we beat OSU once in the last 3 years...yeah I'll agree that we should have won the game in '04 and the '05 team was something special but we never stopped Troy Smith...remember the play were he scrambled backward for 20 or so yards then threw a bomb into our secondary for a TD, my only thought is as talented as smith was where is he now (the bottom of the depth chart at Baltimore) not exactly a QB resume builder, and I hope that Pryor does well and succeeds (so as to make the big 10 better) but I have no problem watching him ride the pine and bitching about it

2006

I was at the PSU/OSU game in Columbus in 2006 when Morelli gave up those two Pick 6s late in the 4th quarter. Dude, our defense completely shut down Troy Smith in that game. Here's an excerpt from the game's Wikipedia entry (written, I presume, by an OSU fan):

"The game was even in all but the score. However Ohio State made all the big plays to overcome a strong defensive effort by Penn State and win going away, 28-6. First downs were 16 to 14 in favor of Penn State, rushing yardage 142 to 138 (PSU), and passing yardage 106 to 115 (Ohio State). Penn State intercepted two passes and Ohio State three. Tony Hunt with four more carries outrushed Antonio Pittman, 138 yards to 110, and Troy Smith (12 of 22 passing) was virtually even with Anthony Morelli in passing statistics. However, Ohio State recorded the only three sacks of the day, stopped Penn State twice inside the ten yard line, and the defense scored two touchdowns in a second half that was dominated by the Buckeyes."

Note that Troy Smith completed 12 of 22 passes for only 115 yards and he had 2 interceptions. It was his WORST game of the season without question, and he gave credit to our defense afterwards for bottling him up. So, you cannot possibly say we didn't shut him down. Heck, aside from that 37 yard TD pass, he only had 78 yards passing for the entire game(which is actually kinda funny, because the media grabbed hold of that play and used it to catapult him to the Heisman Trophy).

So what if I'm bad?

From the silver lining department ... or call it the sour grapes department, which I'm sure some will ... we may have dodged a bullet.

I was particularly caught by this comment in the AP story that ran in my local paper. The article leads into it by saying Pryor brushed off criticism about his image, including a scuffle earlier this month between some Jeannette players and another team after a recent state playoff game:

"I'm not worried about none of that," Pryor said. "I think the football field will speak for itself. I mean, that's why you are here, right? Whether I was a bad kid or not, you are still here."

Just another humble high school football player, huh? Already, it appears, life has taught him that it doesn't much matter what he does off the field because he's so good on it.

BTW, I appreciate the sincerity of those who think that JoePa's uncertain status could be a recruiting liability. But as we've seen over and over and over again, the coaching status can be uncertain at any school at any time. The idea that Joe might want to think about his exit plan for the good of the program overall is fine; the idea that Joe should have done something to land this one recruit--as some have suggested in the past--is ludicrous.
