Billy Beane's Challenge: HOW to Add A Hitter? Bar-right-arrows

Open Blog Wednesday

What the heck. Let's open up BSD to the masses today. I'm declaring Wednesday April 2 "Open Blog Wednesday" on BSD. Write a diary and I'll bump it to the front page where you can suffer the ridicule I subject myself to on a daily basis.

Just a few simple rules:

  1. Keep it clean. Profanity laced tirades will not be promoted.
  2. Stick to Penn State related topics. General topics of discussion related to college athletics is also welcome.
  3. No politics. I don't care who you're voting for in the primary or what your view is on the Iraq War. Take it to another blog.
There you go, BSD readers. The flood gates are open. Have at it.
Let the fun begin.

Joe and his contract - or lack there of
My article that I wrote on FireJayPa.com
______________

From the great journalists at http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20080330_Still_no_deal_for_Penn_St...

Here are some great snippets from the article:

"I don't even care if I get a contract," he said yesterday. "I'll be very frank with you."

"If I wanted a contract, I would go ask for a contract," Paterno said. "If I've got to have a contract to keep my job here, I'm in the wrong place."

"We've won 75 percent of our games," Paterno said. "Three years ago, I'm coach of the year. . . . We're a couple of seconds away from playing for the national championship. Three straight bowls - three wins. I feel good about what we're doing."

------

Ok so let's break this down.

He doesn't seem to think he needs a contract to be the coach at Penn State. He assumes that he will retire when he feels like it and not a moment sooner. Saying that he doesn't think he needs a contract just shows this mans ignorance on sports today and his arrogance in how he feels he runs Penn State.

But then again this is what happens when people build a statue of a man before he dies. Guess what, people have made this man a deity , and now he sits on his throne and controls the show.

And what's even better is despite being 1-5 in the last 6 against OSU and scUM Joe feels the program is doing great things. On top of that, the old fool is convinced he would have played for a MNC in '05 if he told Kelly to squib that kick and not play the cover-0 defense to end the game.

This needs to end sooner than later; but it won't. Not until he can guarantee that Jay will be the next Head Coach or at the very least Offensive Coordinator with a clause in the contract that he can't be fired for X amount of years without a huge huge buyout.

What A Stupid Arguement
You know damn well what he meant when he said he doesn't need a contract.  Hes not "out of touch".  Contracts aren't a foreign concept to the man. Hes been signing them all his life.  He said that because he clearly doesn't feel like he even needs to get paid for this job anymore.  Nothing pleases the man more than to lead the team through that tunnel, and teach them what hes taught kids for a generation, both on the field and off.  He doesn't feel like he needs to sign on a dotted line to to justify being the head football coach at Penn St.  He feels hes earned that, but clearly, clowns like you who decide to define the man's worth by his record against Ohio State and Michigan in a completely arbitrary time period, will use this to make your point.

And if you're that big of a jerk that you don't  consider 3 seasons with 3 bowls wins, a BCS win, and a Big 10 title big things, you're rooting for the wrong team.

You, my friend, are a disrespectful muckraker.  You'll point out all of his flaws, call him names, and belittle his success, yet you offer no solutions.  Any clown can do that.  If all you're going to do is rip the greatest college coach of all time for not competeing for a NC every year, I really wonder how you became a college football fan.

You have to put it in a diary.
I don't have the ability to promote comments.

You all can call me on it in a year if I'm wrong,
and I am man enough to admit when I am (I've had enough practice), but I'll say it again:  This is Joe's last year.  Joe's saying he wants to coach beyond this year, so then why is there no contract?  Money certainly ain't the issue; not when a legend only makes $500,000.  My mind constantly plays through different scenarios as to what's going on at University Park (because they sure as hell ain't saying anything!!!), but it could be that Joe really wants to be done, but is saying he wants to come back to avoid the farewell tour that would surely follow if he announces this is his swan song.  Or does Spanier simply want to move on because we haven't been competing for national championships and there are a lot of people in the "Joe Must Go" camp.  Who knows?

Ol' Man Joe Pa
Lyrics adapted from song "Ol' Man River" by artist Paul Robeson  from the album "Ol Man River" (1926-1938)

Best sung after drinking a six pack of Yuengling.

Ol' Man Joe Pa

There's a football team called the Nittany Lions
That's the only  team I live to see
They're coach'd by Old Joe Paterno
He's been there for an eternity

Ol' man Joe Pa,
That ol' man Joe Pa
He must know sumpin'
But don't say nuthin',
He just keeps rollin'
He keeps on rollin' along.

He don't do email,
He don't do textin',
An' he that sends'em
He'll not be gettin',
But ol' man Joe Pa,
He just keeps rollin' along.

You and me, we watch with doubt,
Can the old man pull this game out,
Run that draw!
Throw that screen!
Git a little drunk.
And we all just scream.

I get weary
An' sick of losein'
I'm tired of Galen
An' Jay Pa's screwin',
But ol' man Joe Pa,
He just keeps rolling' along.

Penn State Bloggers post on the internet
Bloggers rant when the blue and white play
Analyzing games all day and night
Getting' no rest till L.O.I . day

Payin' fees
to the N.L.C.,
That won't make
the Curley man see.
What State need's
a new H.C.,
For them to win
another N.C.

Take me to the Beav when I pass away
Put me with those that swell'd thy fame
Watching together till the end of time
Waiting for the Legend's final game

Ol' man Joe Pa,
That ol' man Joe Pa,
He must know sumpin'
But don't say nuthin'
He just keeps rollin'
He keeps on rollin' along.

Joe Paterno forever keeps rollin' on...

He don't do email,
He don't do textin',
An' he that sends'em
He'll not be gettin',
But ol' man Joe Pa,
He just keeps rollin'along.

Joe Paterno keeps hearing that song.
You an' me, we watch with doubt,
Can the old man pull this game out.
Run that draw!
Throw that screen!
Git a little drunk.
And we all just scream.

I get weary
An' sick of losein'
I'm tired of Galen
An' Jay Pa's screwin',
But ol' man Joe Pa,
He just keeps rolling' along!

Yikes!
I know that this is not football related - and - that picture of the dam breaking; looks eerily close to the South Fork dam failure.

Being native to the Johnstown area that picture just reminded me of my experiences in '77.

Just curious!

Picture
I think that is from the Johnstown flood. When I grabbed the pic it was named "johnstown".

Profanity laced tirades
If there is ever a day when those get promted to the front page, let me know, I'll write a doozy.

I'll admit it. I didn't think there was any good material yesterday, so I opened up to everyone. Little did I know Stanley Pringle was going to provide a blogger's wet dream (Pun intended. Ha!)

I think it worked out pretty well and everyone had fun with it. I had no idea we were going to go down the road to Pitt with such gusto, but it was fun.
