Michigan + homecoming = night game? or whiteout?

Since we all seem to be in a debating mood right now....

I've been wondering for a while now: will the Michigan game this year, which is easily the biggest home game of the 2008 season be called a 8pm game?  All other homecomings I can remember seem to always be at 3:30.  Why? I really don't know, so if anyone knows why that is, i'd appreciate being enlightened.

Also, do you think a whiteout will be declared since it will be homecoming?  Then if there would be a game to do another white house, michigan would be the game to do it.

Your thoughts?

TV will dictate
But my guess is this is a 3:30 ABC regional game.

I can't remember a Homecoming night game, I don't think it's ever come up before.

night game possible...
Looking at the schedule of other games that day there don't seem to be too many great matchups. Yes, I know, a team that is not expected to do well steps up and then I'm wrong. But here are the only real good matchups, based on last years season, that I could find....

VaTech vs Bos Coll

Kansas vs OK (i doubt kansas will have the year they had last tho)

LSU vs South Carolina

Other than that you got games like OSU vs Mich St. and Georgia Tech vs Clemson.

Jesse's right... TV will dictate
Don't you know the TV Networks own College Football?

I don't think 3:30 games and homecoming have any correlation at all. There are a lot of variables that come into play with kickoff scheduling. The Primetime slot is usually one of the best match-ups of the week with a lot of hype surrounding it.

Homecoming Opponents
...are rarely primetime material.

We usually schedule a lesser Big Ten team for our homecoming - I think this is the first for as long as I can remember that a perennial Top 25 was scheduled for Homecoming.

Sure there were a few surprise teams that became Top 25 homecoming opponents during the season, but I don't remember PSU scheduling one that would be a preseason Top 25 team.

No Night Games
I think PSU was embarrassed by some of the behavior at some of the night games in recent years, so I have a feeling we will not see a night game this year. ESPN is pissed about Chris Fowler getting drenched in beer.

I Dunno
The 2005 game with OSU was the second highest rated of all time on ESPN at that time. If theres a possibility of a big night game, I'm confident ESPN will put it on there.  Just don't expect Gameday to be back any time soon.

hmmm both good points
On one side Penn State gets great ratings for espn (plus psu benefits for the added exposure).  Do you know for a fact that espn isn't happy about that or are you just assuming Mike?  It is a good assumption, because i don't think most people would be very pleased with beer chucked at them, but I was just curious if you really read that somewhere.  While on the other side, psu might be embarrased with some of the events that have taken place. Plus I think the home team really does have the final say(most of the time) in when the games are played. If they don't want a night game, they won't have one, like Ohio State shys away from night games most of the time.

However, when it comes down it to, its all about the money.  Night games bring in larger audiences and greater exposure for the football program and the school.  Therefore I wouldn't be surprised if penn state just goes with what would be most profitable.

not surprised
but 9 times out of 10, i'm pretty sure something can warrant almost anyone to get drenched in beer. ive been both the front and back end of both and there was never any doubt to either situation. ha, im sorry i couldnt resist throwing that out there. im joking, we need to conduct ourselves in a more orderly manner and live upto the phrase "may no act of ours bring shame" because we've been pretty shameful as of late

isn't illinois a night game?
if we already have a night game it would kinda get that done, but like said above, TV will dictate.

as far as i know,
the time and tv network for the illinois game has not been set yet.  according the future schedules at gopsusports.com, the game has been declared the All-University/Varsity "S" Day.

some of the times should be set relatively soon.  I remember it was either late april of early may last year when it was announced that osu game would be at 8pm.

Nothing set yet
There is nothing set yet but remember that the big-ten only allows one home conference night game per season.  To stay up on the latest games on TV news, here is a good link.

thanks for the links
I also had no idea that big ten only allows one conference night game per season.  I am guessing you mean that you can't HOST two night games in one season.  Do you know the reasoning behind that?

by rmcmillen50 on Apr 8, 2008 10:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah
I believe it is you can't host more then 1 conference night game per year.  I just emailed the Big Ten for confirmation on this, but last time I had a question, it took 5 weeks for them to get back to me.  However, at least it wasn't a form letter and they actually answered my question.

I appologize
and stand corrected.  The Big Ten replied quickly on this and said that they have no rule limiting or dictating night games in the conference.  I am sorry for the bad information.

its cool,
I'm impressed that the big ten responded so fast.

White Out....
I think Whiteouts shouldn't just be thrown around.  They should be saved for truly special occasions.  If TheM are undefeated then i say think about it, but definitely if they lay an ASU or Oregon type egg again this year.

No WhiteOuts just for the sake of having them.

by platnumkid on Apr 9, 2008 1:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

very true
just like zombie is saved for special moments, so should white outs lest both lose some of their appeal.

one thing i was thinking about however is the idea of a stadiun whiteout (whitehouse) for michigan since it really is the only home game deserving of one.  if the athletic dept wanted to do one, they would have to plan it far in advance (like the nd game) for it to work, no matter how good michigan is.  but then again, should we even have another whitehouse? should they be saved for just really big out of conference home games?

by rmcmillen50 on Apr 9, 2008 1:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree and disagree
I agree Zombie can be over played and should be saved for momentum changing plays or those nail in the coffin type plays.

I disagree that the Michigan is the only home game disserving of the whiteout. 3 of the 4 conference home games are with teams we lost to last year. Obviously Michigan is the big name but Illinois is certainly no slouch and MSU our so called "rival" usually plays us tough as well.

It's a tough thing with this whiteout. We definitely don't want to over kill something that brings a special atmosphere but I think every game, including the Costal Carolinas of the world, is as important as the next. This is no where more evident than in College Football.
