Icers going D-1?
I see on here from time to time talk about the whether the icers should go D-I in hockey. Well, the Collegian today ran an article about how they want to but are short on funds to do it, mainly because of an arena. Apparently the BJC was originally designed to host hockey as well but they changed the plans at the last minute and now it would take 4-6 months and a ton of money to fit it in.

Title IX
Also the icers are a great club team, but I seem to recall that they played Robert Morris, who is division one, and were soundly beaten. I wonder if the growing pains of getting beaten by a 15 goals against Michigan, Michigan State, etc. would be worth it. I guess that's open to debate as well.

Title 9
The growing pains would be bad though and could be a deal breaker all on its own.

It's equal "oppotunity"
It's a pretty interesting topic, but I have not read any of the relevant law on it in a long time. I do know that you do not have to have an equal number of mens and womens scholarships to be considered Title IX compliant, but if you don't, the burden is on the school to show that there is no demand for additional women's sports.
So, if there is already a club women's team, Penn State would have to either go to D-1 in both mens and womens hockey, or cut mens atheltic scholarships someplace else to ensure that men don't have more scholarships available to them then the women.

You're right
A new building seems extravagant though. Maybe if were convertible so that the volleyball/wrestling and gymnastics teams could use it as well, but it seems that Rec Hall, while ancient, seems to be holding its own for those sports.
However, if a new arena was built that held say, 8,500 people, perhaps we could use it for basketball as well, at least before the Big Ten season started. It might help, especially if the building had a better spot on campus.
