Icers going D-1?

I see on here from time to time talk about the whether the icers should go D-I in hockey.  Well, the Collegian today ran an article about how they want to but are short on funds to do it, mainly because of an arena.  Apparently the BJC was originally designed to host hockey as well but they changed the plans at the last minute and now it would take 4-6 months and a ton of money to fit it in.

Title IX
I think there would be Title IX issues here as well, ie would we also have to have womens ice hockey too? I think we would. I imagine that is a huge elepahnt in the room on those discussions.

Also the icers are a great club team, but I seem to recall that they played Robert Morris, who is division one, and were soundly beaten. I wonder if the growing pains of getting beaten by a 15 goals against Michigan, Michigan State, etc. would be worth it.  I guess that's open to debate as well.

Title 9
You only have to spend equal amounts, not have equal # of teams.  However, we do have a women's hockey club team (they went like 4-11) so it would not be that big of a deal.  Then the ice surface would get used more often.

The growing pains would be bad though and could be a deal breaker all on its own.

Are you sure?
I thought you had to offer equal scholarships. I suppose it's up to the interpretation of the courts.

It's equal "oppotunity"
it's more vague than just an equal number of scholarships, although that counts as compliance under the law. One of the issues with Title IX is that football scholarships count against it, so by adding another exclusively men's sport, you might get caught having to shut down other men's sports.

It's a pretty interesting topic, but I have not read any of the relevant law on it in a long time. I do know that you do not have to have an equal number of mens and womens scholarships to be considered Title IX compliant, but if you don't, the burden is on the school to show that there is no demand for additional women's sports.

So, if there is already a club women's team, Penn State would have to either go to D-1 in both mens and womens hockey, or cut mens atheltic scholarships someplace else to ensure that men don't have more scholarships available to them then the women.

so I guess
if you are going to fund 18 more guys, you are going to need to fund 18 girls somewhere too.

BJC for hockey?
I know the hockey club sports fans/community pretty much hold a grudge about the university not supplying an arena that fits the D-1 standards (to the point that you are not allowed to do "traditional" PSU cheers at a hockey game), but i doubt that the BJC is the answer.  During hockey season (i.e. basketball season) there's a ton already going on at the BJC, and its not a 45-minute venture to convert from hockey to basketball and back again.  We're talking about a whole new building if the university plans on moving in that direction. . .

You're right
I don't think that the BJC will be retrofitted for hockey. Even if it was, I think the hockey team would have the same problem that the basketball team does, 10,000 empty seats.

A new building seems extravagant though. Maybe if were convertible so that the volleyball/wrestling and gymnastics teams could use it as well, but it seems that Rec Hall, while ancient, seems to be holding its own for those sports.

However, if a new arena was built that held say, 8,500 people, perhaps we could use it for basketball as well, at least before the Big Ten season started. It might help, especially if the building had a better spot on campus.
