nittany white out has a cool ranking of stadiums
I thought it was interesting and well done so here is the link: http://nittanywhiteout.com/
And I thought it would be fun to steal the idea and run it as a poll here to compare results (if I did the poll correctly). I would choose Beaver Stadium, but of course that is the only stadium in the big ten I've been to. People with experience at other stadiums can elaborate on why they would choose one over another. I just cannot imagine a more intense or intimidating playing situation than a night game with a white out at Beaver Stadium.

I have been to the big house...
twice (the last two loses) and it is overrated. Beaver Stadium is so much louder…and bigger. Until recently they did hold the most seats in the nation and even then, because of it’s shape and it is build half into the ground…it looks a lot smaller than the Beaver. I haven’t been to the Horseshoe, but I am going there this year.

The Big House
Is not bigger than the Beav. They just cram more people in there and give them less room on the bench. I was not impressed either.

Technically
They can’t even cram more peiople in their this year. We have the biger house.
The answer to this question, like it or not, is Ohio State.

Yeah, and we would know
Wouldn’t we? I can’t even remember the last time we beat them out there.

The Poll
Seems like a pretty statistically accurate poll to me.

1978
Was the last time we won in Columbus. This does not please me.

Honestly...
I think Camp Randall is the toughest place to play (although I voted for the Beav). The team might not be as good as the Buckeyes, but that place is loud and intimidating. I think the Shoe is so tough because the Buckeyes are the best team in the Big Ten

Camp Randall
I’m the lone CR vote. That place is loud, and it’s damn cold up there in November.

I think it's a tie
The correct answer is either Beaver Stadium, The Horseshoe or Camp Randall. I’ve been to many a game at the Horseshoe and it is an electifying atmosphere. The Whiteouts at the Beav give it a different sense of excitement. I’ve never been to Camp Randall but I think you can feel the excitement through the TV so it’s got to be great.
I’ve been to a majority of the stadiums (excluding Wisconsin and Purdue) so I’ll give you my listing beyond the Top 3:
4 – Iowa – Nice old school stadium Great party atmosphere tailgate
5 – Illinois – Stadium was so-so but those people were there to party. It was back when they weren’t any good so they could care less about the game they just wanted to party.
6 – MSU – Sort of the same situation as Illinois.
7 – Indiana – Along the same lines as MSU and Illinois except on a lesser scale. Low key.
8 – scUM – Giant stadium but oddly quiet. Would be lower if the last two weren’t in bad situations. Could also be higher if it wasn’t so overrated by everyone.
9 – Northwestern – Ryan Field is horrible and the tailgating is spread out but once you did find a spot they tailgated like the big boys
10 – Minnesota – By far the worse in my opinion. I believe someone has called it a dimly lit basement. It’s off campus in a downtown seedy area. I believe it will get better when they get the stadium on campus.
Like I said I haven’t been to Purdue so I can’t judge that one. I’d assume it would be in the Illinois/MSU/Indiana range. Plus I’m judging more on a tailgate/experience factor. Not really thinking about what is like to play on the field.

The Beav
It’s really amazing how the atmosphere has changed in the past few years. I don’t think it was nearly as intimidating when I was in school (1998-2002).

agreed
It is more intimidating now, but the tailgating was better back then. You could just park anywhere and there was lots of open grassy space. I like the atmosphere better now but am bitter about paying for parking and then being told where to park. That’s what I get for living in rural PA and expecting the rest of the world to be like home.

as a michigan guy
yeah, our stadium is awful for homefield advantage. we still have alumni that yell at people for standing up during the game (much less yelling during the game). It got worse with the bad losses to start. I think it’d be fairer for a PSU blog to say outside of their own stadium. I’d say its a toss up between beaver stadium and the shoe. Obviously Michigan has struggled more at the Shoe more recently. Having been to both stadiums recently, the shoe comes off worse. The fact Michigan’s players had to go through 2 hours of drug dog test to get in didn’t help the playing situation. Iowa would be a close third. Their team quality hasn’t helped as of late.

Depends where you sit
If you sit in the student section of Beaver stadium it will rank right up there with the Horseshoe and with Camp Randall. If you sit around the grey hairs then you are going to have to sit down and shut up. If you haven’t been to the other stadiums it is kinda hard for you to vote. I have been to about half of them and I would say the Horseshoe was pretty rockn’ for a team they don’t even consider a rival….

well...
im going to jump on that CR bandwagon. i think the fact that the stadium is smack in the middle of madison and everyone sits on the corner on these cobblestone dividers, talking smack to all that pass is a big advantage to them. its a complete party atmosphere everyone makes predictions. (needless to say i went the year that they lost to hawaii and i barked up that tree all day) the stadium is very cool, and the fact that they only really have seating on three sides and it STILL gets that loud is a testament to their fans. i will admit that hearing a call and response of “f-you” “eat shvt” might be a bit out of hand (for younger ears), but its a tradition. if you’re there early enough, try to catch the band practicing, its a treat in itself

Iowa
I’m going to the Iowa game this year. I’m interested to see what that’s like.

Metrodome
Prior to coming to PSU for grad school in ‘05 (a great year to be introduced to the experience of Penn State football!!!), the only non-D-III college football game I’d ever been to was at the Metrodome for Minnesota vs Indiana, way back when the Hoosiers had Randle El at QB. My older brother & I were able to walk up before the game and get tickets in row 6 behind one of the end zones, which was cool (but also an indictment). At the time I thought the atmosphere was alright (and it was an exciting game, the Gophers won 48-42 or something crazy like that), but then again, I was young, misguided, and didn’t know any better. And then I set foot in Beaver Stadium for the first time, and there was no comparison (and now I’ve been to 16 games at the Beav). Now that I really know what the college football experience is all about, I’m so glad that this is the last season that the Gophers and their opponents will have to suffer in the Metrodome before TCF Bank Stadium opens (ugh, I hate corporate naming rights). The Metrodome is a fine atmosphere for a Vikings game, but it’s pretty bad for a Gophers game because they never sell out, and whenever they get close to selling out, it’s half-filled either with Badgers or Hawkeyes fans. As if that’s not embarrassing enough, when Iowa beat Minnesota in 2002 to clinch a Rose Bowl berth, Hawkeyes fans tore down the goalposts… in the Metrodome. Now that is embarrassing, and about all you need to know about the intimidation factor of playing in the Metrodome for college football.
